Suggestion: iPhone mail should automatically select reply-to email address

I don't know if this is the right forum for suggestions, but here it is anyhow:
When replying to an email in Mail.app, the reply-to address is automatically set to wherever the email was sent. It would be nice if the iPhone Mail client did the same instead of defaulting to the address associated with the SMTP server.

So this is an alias email address associated with a primary email account/address? All messages addressed to the alias email address are received by the primary email account and delivered to the Inbox mailbox for the primary account?
The iPhone's mail client supports receiving messages from an alias email address associated with a primary email account but not replying from the alias email address for a message that was addressed to the alias address.

  • Mail crashing when selecting 'reply' to email

For some reason when replying to emails in 'Mail' the program goes to the beach ball.
If I just select new email and address it to the person that sent me the email I want to reply to all is OK.
    Hope someone can help.

So Mail doesn’t really crash (i.e. quit unexpectedly). Rather, it freezes (i.e. becomes unresponsive), right?
What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Try disabling Search .Mac For Certificates in Keychain Access > Preferences if it’s enabled. Take a look at the following articles for an explanation of why this could be the problem:

  • Me outgoing mail server not working from iPhone / Reply to email address

Hi, I have MM sent up on my iPhone and Mac, the SMTP outgoing mail server does not work from the iPhone but does from the Mac, to get around this I changed the outgoing server on the iPhone to my optusnet outgoing server, that has been working fine, the problem I have is if someone reply's to a email from the phone it gets bounced back becuase the reply to email address for me is @mac.com not from @me.com
I have tried to change the reply to email address in the phone but it only allows you to change the name not the @mac.com
I have only ever had a Me account not a .Mac account so I dont know why its locked to @mac

I deleted the MM account on the phone and reinstalled it again. Now it is working.

  • Can I set a default Reply-From email address on my iPad/iPhone?

In Mail for the Mac, there is an option under the Compose settings to set a default Reply-From email address for all your emails, so that, regardless of which account any email came from, you will always reply by default from one specific address. Is there a way to set a default Reply-From address on the iPad/iPhone?

[EDIT: Sorry, mis-read question. Ignore me.]

  • I created a new ID for my Iphone, because the old ID was an email address I no longer have. Also, the phone wouldn't recognize the password I have always used. Now the problem is when I try to update my apps, it automatically wants to use the old ID.

I created a new ID for my Iphone, because the old ID was an email address I no longer have. Also, the phone wouldn't recognize the password I have always used. Now the problem is when I try to update my apps, it automatically wants to use the old ID. I've set the new ID for the phone, but it defaults to the old one when asking for a password to update apps.

That's because all apps are forever tied to the Apple ID used to obtain them, & can only be updated using that ID.
To use your new ID with these apps, you'll have to delete them, then repurchase. Or, contact iTunes support, explain the situation, & ask that they add these apps to the download queue of your new ID.

  • I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures for my Mail is not showing up. I have the signatures inthe preference panes and selected for the email address, but when I make a new message, the signature shows as none and doesn't give me a choice

I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures for my Mail are not showing up. I have the signatures inthe preference panes and selected for the email address, but when I make a new message, the signature shows as none and doesn't give me a choice. Yesterday, the signatures were stacking instead of switching to the one I wanted to choose.

I had this and fixed it.
I had upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures in Mail were fine. But then about a week later, I got a new computer and used Migration Assistant to copy my stuff to the new machine. Upon opening Mail, I had all the correct Signature information in the Preferences>Signatures window, but nothing worked.
After lots of hunting, I found the Signature Folder. It's in:
    Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
Looking at my previous setup (which works) I saw in that folder two types of files: .webarchive and .siganture
Looking in my new machine's Signature folder, I saw only the .webarchive folders, not the .signature folders
Since this was literally a clone of my previous setup to a new machine, here's what I did:
    1. Quit Mail
    2. In Problem machine, go to
    Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
    3. Move the Signatures folder someplace safe, but out of the MailData folder
    4. Get the Signatures Folder from the working install (like a backup) and copy it to the MailData folder on the problematic machine
    5. Start Mail on the problem machine
This worked for me. I don't know why Migration Assistant didn't copy the full signature folder, but this fixed it. It worked perfectly partly because I had just backed up with Carbon Copy Cloner and the very next day set up the new machine. I don't know where Lion or earlier versions of mail stored signatures, but the absence of the .signature filetype seems to be the problem.
    Hope this helps

  • Why does iPhone automatically enter my entire email address when I simply type "gmail" and how to I turn it off?

Why does my iPhone automatically enter my entire email address when I simply type "gmail" and how to I turn it off?  It also does it whenever I type it in Safari (but not Chrome) and it only does it with one of my email addresses and not any of my other ones (i.e., yahoo, hotmail, etc.).
Thanks so much for your help!

I don't see visible underscores in that login form, but they appear to be entered (that form isn't high enough to show them for me).
You can verify that in the Scratchpad and use Execute > Display after pasting the below posted code.

  • New IPhone 5. Apple id is my email address. when I try to set up i cloud it automaticly changes my apple pass word to my provider pass word. How can I get it to stay my apple pass word?

New IPhone 5. Apple id is my email address. when I try to set up i cloud it automaticly changes my apple pass word to my provider pass word. How can I get it to stay my apple pass word?

Thanks for the flag J.K. - they contaced me and solved my problem.  On this account (which I created just to ask this question), I log in with my email rather than my user name (mtalldud). On the account that I was having trouble with, they told me to use my user ID instead of my email to log in and it worked. This is a bit confusing and seems a bit inconsistent but at least I don't need this temporary account any more to get into this community and find answers!

  • Mail (Mavericks) replies with the wrong email address

Currently using Mavericks, 10.9.5, on my MacBook Pro (15", early 2011 version), and the default Mail app.
I belong to a fair number of email discussion groups, most specifically with Yahoo! Groups, and I've set up a specific account and email address for use with that service.  I also have currently setup several other email addresses within Mail, all seven of them are POP3 accounts.
Yahoo! requires me to send email to the group from the address that is registered, but Mail doesn't use the correct email address as the default when I reply to the posts despite the fact that the original message was sent to the correct account.  Mail uses the email address from the account that's at the top of the Inbox listing for the address, not the one I want used.  I usually find out that messages sent were on the incorrect address when I get the bounce back from Yahoo! indicating I sent from the wrong address.  Digging through the sent items, setting the address correctly and resending fixes the original fault, but my iPhone (all versions of iOS 6, 7 and 8) replies correctly, but Mavericks Mail does not.
Has anyone else had this happen to them, and was the upgrade to Yosemite the fix?  Or is it still broken there?
    TIA,
    Jon

Open Mail preferences and select the Composing tab. Check the Send New Messages From box and see what is selected. Either select an account to send from as default or select Account of selected mailbox.
Also open the Accounts tab and check the outgoing server for the account. Be sure you have the correct SMTP server set for that account and check the box to use only that server for that account. Do the same for all accounts making sure you have the correct server for each account. If there is a problem with that server, you will get a pop up asking to select a different server in the event of a failure. Otherwise, if that box is not checked, it will just select another server if there is a problem with the one for that account. That could be your problem.
Send a test message to verify that. You can also reorder the mailboxes under the inbox by dragging each to the order you want. Depending on the settings in preferences, either the highlighted account will be the sending account or the default address you set in the list. Replies should always come from the address that was sent too.

  • I recently changed my email address and updated my password.  However, when I connect my iPhone 4 it defaults to my old email address which is no longer valid.  How do I get my phone to recognize my updated email address?

I recently changed my email address and updated my password.  However, when I connect my iPhone 4 it defaults to my old email address which is no longer valid.  How do I get my phone to recognize my updated email address and how do I now change the iPhone 4 to recognize the new address?  I wish to delete all reference to the old address.  All help would be appreciated.

    Hi.
Here is a procedure that should help.
    1. Go to "Settings"
    2. Go to "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
    3. Click the account you don't want anymore
    4. Go to the bottom and click "Delete Account"
    5. Confirm the deletion
    6. Go back to "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" (if you're not there already)
    7. Add your new account

  • HT5622 When my daughter got her first iphone we set it up with my email address, she now has her own email & new iphone.  I want to use my email address for my icloud, can I delete the content  from the icloud account and continue to use my email?

When my daughter got her first iphone we set it up with my email address, she now has her own email & new iphone.  I want to use my email address for my icloud, can I delete the content from the icloud account and continue to use my email?

Yes, but be sure she is on a separate iCloud account with a separate ID before deleting anything.  Be sure there is nothing that you want to keep on your device too.  When you delete the data from iCloud it will be deleted from all devices signed into the account.  Then you can delete the data from the existing account by doing the following:
To delete the contacts, go to iCloud.com from your computer, log into your iCloud account and open Contacts, click on All Contacts on the left, to the right click on any single contact to select it, click on the Actions (gear shaped) icon at the bottom left and choose Select All, then press the Delete key on your keyboard.
For Calendars, open the calendar on icloud.com, click Edit on the bottom left, then tap the minus sign to the right of each calendar to delete it.
For Notes, open notes on icloud.com, click on each note on the left, then click Delete at the top to delete it.
For Reminders, open reminders on icloud.com, click on each reminder and press your Delete key to delete it.
For Mail, open your mail on icloud.com, click each folder on the left (such as your inbox), click on a single message to the right, press Control-A on your keyboard to select them all, then press your Delete key.  Repeat this for each of your mail folders except Trash.  When finished, click on the actions (gear-shaped) icon on the bottom left and select Empty Trash.
If you also want to delete your iCloud backups you can go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage on your device, tap the name of your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup.

  • How can Address Book groups select the right email address?

    Hello
I am wondering about what should be a common problem, but I don't see any discussions of it.
Most of my contacts have more than one email entry: e.g.,  work, home, etc..
When I construct a group, let's say "Widget Group" and drag Mary Brown, Bob Smith, and Barak Obama into it, and then mail using the group address, it selects the FIRST email address to send to, even if I have tried to rearranged the template, set up a new field called "preferred" etc..
There seems no way to have a group email send to some specified email address, which REALLY makes the address book cumbersome. I suppose I"ll have to have separate contacts: Mary Smith--Work; Mary Smith—home etc..
SURELY there is a better way. Help!
    Thank you.

Thank you. I assure you I had checked throgh the apple help menu extensively, searching with various rubrics. This DOES work, however. Thanks! Not a very intuitive way to do things, I think.

  • Hi. How can I delete my icloud account on my iPhone? I don't have that email address I was using anymore. I tried deleting it but it is asking for the password and I don't remember it.

Hi, How can I delete my icloud account on my iphone? I don't have that email address I was using before anymore and I already tried deleting the account but it is asking for the password and I don't remember it.

    Hi ale.vica,
You need to go to Manage your Apple ID, https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/, and sign in with your current Apple ID and password and do the following:
    1.     Edit your current Apple ID and change it back to the ID which is displaying for your iCloud account. You do not need to verify it - this is only a temporary change
    2.     Go into Settings>iCloud on your device and delete the iCloud account. Use your current password when your are prompted for a password
    3.     Once the old iCloud account is deleted, go back into Manage your Apple ID and change your ID back to the current one
    4.     Go back to Settings>iCloud and sign on with your current ID and password
That should take care of your issue!
    Cheers,

  • Reply-to email address

    Hi,
I need a bpel process to receive the reply-to email address from the ns_emails.xml file or /orabpel/domains/default/metadata/MailService/oracle.xml file.
I'm setting the replyto address for an html href link during a xslt transformation prior to sending an HTML email with the links included in the body.
Has anyone do this? as I do not want to hard code the email address in the BPEL process.
    Phil

I had a similar issue, here's what eventually worked for me:
Up until the MM update this week, all my calendars ("Work", "Home") were "On My Mac" and were always synced over the air. To be able to respond to invites with my work email address, the latter had to be the first one in the list of email addresses in my own address card in Address Book. I barely ever receive any invites on my home calendar, so if I ever responded to them with my work email, that wouldn't have been an issue for me. On the other hand, it was very important for me that responses sent from my work calendar were sent with my work email address.
Since the MM update, it seems that I can respond to an invite ONLY IF the invite was sent to my MM email address. Remember that after the upgrade, all your "On My Mac" calendars have been moved to "[email protected]". So I created a new work calendar "On My Mac", and when I receive an invite, instead of double-clicking it, I drag it to my work calendar. Then I'm able to respond to it with the correct work email address. The downside is that now the calendars "On My Mac" don't sync over the air thru MM anymore, so my iPhone is only updated when it syncs with iTunes.
