Suggestion on backup. [SOLVED]
Dear sirs!
I've recently encountered a problem of destroying my Arch too often. I've got a bit tired of it so I decided to (finally!) make a backup copy.
As I went through wiki and similar posts I realized that there are quite a few solutions out there, but I am still not sure what to pick.
My situation is: sda1 = 50gb (13 in use ); sda3(home) = 400gb (about 200gb in use ); don't know if swap matters but it is 15gig on sda2.
My requirements in order of importance:
1) I want to be able to make a full system backup and be able to restore from command line or environment close to nothing in case if I destroy everything.
2) I want to be able to make snapshots of my current file system because i like experimenting with GUI settings which ruins it quite often as well. Which means that ability to restore from command line within environment would be nice to have. (If there is a GUI I don't mind )
3) The solution should comply with what I have.
What I have:
1) 320GB external HDD which is empty
2) 160GB external HDD with bootable Arch iso which is about 540mb
I was considering luckybackup, but I cannot find information if it is capable of full system backup.
Clonezilla at the other hand has some partition limitation.
Any advice will be strongly appreciated.

My suggestion is to stop destroying your Arch!
I want to be able to make snapshots of my current file system because i like experimenting with GUI settings which ruins it quite often as well.
You don't need a backup to prevent this. Just create a new user called "mytester" and mess with whatever you want and delete him when you're done. If you installed packages you don't want anymore then just remove them (they're all logged in the pacman log file) or use a pacman wrapper with "rollback" support, such as aura. For a more technical but complicated solution to snapshots, please read about snapshots in BtrFS.
What backup method have you been using thus far?

Cached exchange mode was already marked so that was not the issue.
I have done all the usual of creating a new profile, reinstalling Outlook etc but nothing seemed to work. I also tried going back to Outlook 2007 and reinstalling Windows but same problem.
However, I am not sure if it is connected but I was useing the option in MS Live Sync to synchronise Office settings which I turned off recently and now no longer have the issue. Unfortunately I cannot remember when in the process I did this so cannot be

Dear Ms Apple....My wi fi shows Not configured..please suggest me a solve out this problem soon..
Ms Apple is away from the desk but maybe I can help. If you open system preferences you'll see icons. Click on the one that says "Network". You should see somthing like this
Make sure that Wifi is turned on (gree light). This is a box in the upper right that says "Turn Wifi On". Click that box. Now your radio is on. To connect to a wifi network, select the icon in the upper menu bar that I've circled.
You can chose a network to join from the listed networks. You can also turn on wifi from that top line menu button but I think everyone be familar with system preferences. You'll go there a lot in your mac life. -
Suggestion for backup drive for Air
I've enjoyed getting to know my MacBook Pro this past year or so, but I'm still new to the Airbook and need some assistance. I'm going to help an elderly friend move data from her old iMac to her 1st Gen. Airbook. I'm insisting she get a backup drive, but the Seagate Free Agent I recently bought won't work for her, because it is either FireWire, which Airbooks don't have, or it requires two powered USB ports. Given that the Air has one USB, would we be able to get around it by using a powered USB hub? Is there a specific drive that anyone can suggest? I'd prefer Mac formatted/ready to go, but not absolutely necessary. An external drive with a built in power supply tends to be bigger than we'd prefer. What about a USB flash drive? I don't think she's filled the 80 GB solid state drive on the Air so she doesn't likely need a huge capacity drive. Any help you can give would be most welcome.
Hi SFMacNewbiew,
Happy to hear that you're enjoying your MacBook Pro.
I have the following drive currently:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/TR043ZM/A
What's nice about it, is that I have FW flexibility. The cable for the USB has the double USB cables and I've been backing up to it using the single USB (power & data) without problems for 4+ months now.
I've also used this one as well:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/TV523VC/A
When you think about it, the second one is a better bang for the buck. It is, however, USB only.
One thing you mentioned is that she has an older iMac, so getting a drive with a FW interface wouldn't be all that bad and with enough storage she could theoretically use the HD with both machines. I've yet to come across a reasonable priced portable HD that I've had to use with a powered USB-hub.
Regarding the thumb drives, I'd recommend against them. Even a "base install" with some data is 12-19 GB on most MacBook Airs unless she did a custom installation. -
I Have an iMac desktop purchased in 2010 with OS X 6.1.6 and Snow Leapard. Recently after starting up, I was not able to open Safari. I checked for updates and all was well. I tried again and got a message saying Safari could not be opened because some components were damaged. After using Disk utilities to try and repair, it was suggested I uninstall OS X and reinstall from the disk. I did not at the time because I wanted to backup some info to a USB drive. But now when I startup all I get is the white screen and Apple logo and the loading symbol. What happened and How can Imfix it? I am not very tech savvy and don't know where to turn!
Hi nancy mfromamity harbor,
Welcome to the Support Communities! It sounds like reinstalling the Snow Leopard operating system is your next step. This should not affect the documents and data that you currently have on your iMac. I'll include the information to show you how below.
Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH6606
Under some circumstances, you may need to reinstall Mac OS X. You can reinstall Mac OS X while keeping your files and user settings intact.
Note:To reinstall Mac OS X from another computer on your network, see:
Using another computer’s DVD or CD drive
To reinstall Mac OS X:
Insert the Mac OS X installation disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
If you want to control which parts of Mac OS X are installed, click Customize, and then select the parts you want to install.
To start the installation, click Install.
If you purchased a standalone version of Mac OS X, these installation instructions are in a PDF file located on the Mac OS X installation disc.
If you need to reinstall the version of Mac OS X that was on your computer when you purchased it, or if you need to restore all the software on your computer (including Apple software, third-party applications, and other printer drivers), refer to the documentation that came with your computer.
If you need to reinstall Mac OS X and you’ve been using Time Machine to back up your applications, files, and user settings, you can easily restore this information from your Time Machine backup disk after you’ve reinstalled Mac OS X.
Nancy, here is the contact information if you need technical assistance to get your iMac up and running.

Suggestion: Mark "Helpful" & "Solved" Posts As Such in Tree View
The subject line says it all pretty much.
It would be helpful if, when viewing a thread in Tree View, one could easily pick out which, if any, posts had been marked "Helpful" and "Solved" by the OP.
Thank you.JDee,
Good suggestion. We have put it on the tracker.
Thank you,

iTunes match hasn't worked since Mountain Lion install. Cloud icon keeps striking~ off. Won't upload new tracks to iTunes match. Just the eternal circle of step one, two, freeze....then tries again but never gets completed. Worked fine before Mountain Lion. Apple tech tried over phone for an hour but it didn't solve this issue. See others are in the same boat. Any help with this, please??
Same issue here with a MacBook pro recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. I hadn't tried iTunes Match prior to the upgrade so can't say whether or not it worked previously.

Suggestions for Backup ACS v.5
Hi,
I was wondering if anybody could share how they have setup the backup configuration.
When I compare the backup files from the ACS v.5 with those in v.4, the backup files are much larger. I had the backup files from the v. 4 server saved on a network share on a windows server. Each dmp file was just 600 KB, so we had the last 20 Backups saved on the drive.
When I make a backup of a ACS v.5 Configuation - which I use for Tacacs device authentication, so we have a pretty large configuration with about 15000 devices on it, the backup is 800MB! We would quickly reach the limit of the drive...
what is sensible to do here ?
Thankx!Hi Ida,
The ACS 5.x and 4.x are totally different as you already probably know, you are right in 4.x the backup size are very small they will almost never reach the MB size, however 5.x is a totally different story.
5.x has different backup files, one for configuration, one for configuration + CLI, one for logging section. The most common backup and the most important as well is the configuration backup, this one can be collected from the CLI using:
ACS# acs backup backup-name repository repository-name
Or you can configure the ACS to collect configuration backup files by schedule from System Administration section, this option will collect the configuration settings only. However the backup size still will be MB size.

Suggestions for Backup Software
Hi, I am looking for backup software that is easy to use, with full backup each time and that is reasonably priced - your recommendations. Thanks - Bob61
Hi
I am looking for the same thing I think. I have a G4 Powerbook and I want a simple backup utility that will backup everything just in case my hard drive corrupts beyond repair. I had a Dantz on my old PowerMac and just hit backup and it would backup everything on the hard drive. I don't want to have to select files, drag them or at all be concerned that I am forgetting to back up some file. I was looking at the Dantz Retrospect V4.1 Express but I don't know if that is the latest, is it good or what. Is the SuperDuper a program that will just do a complete backup of the hard drive, looking for changes each subsequent time and backing all of them up?
Thanks for any help.
Hi Bob61
I've been using SuperDuper for a couple of months now
and really like it. It's priced at around $29 and as
shareware you can try it out first to see if it fits
your needs. It can be set up in a number of ways to
take care of your backup needs and will also do
bootable full backups which is, I guess, what you're
looking for. You can get it here:

Good luck and happy new year!

I just updated and tested the performance in both C6, CC and CC2014, and also tried deleting the SavedData file before starting InDesign, but the performance is still very slow (10-30 seconds between every move I make). It seems that the problem is only occurring in one certain document. Any ideas how to find the bug or "clean" the document?
Thanks for your input Bart and Doc – I tried both deactivating the preflight and saving as IDML without results. I think I found the "bug" though: a vectorized pattern which I had copy-pasted directly from Illustrator. After removing the vector everything seems to run smoothly again

2x 10.5.2 xServe + raid backup solutions - Suggestions please!
Hello,
I'll give a brief overview of what I'm rolling out. *Limited budget* So keep that in mind
Basically I'm just looking for suggestions on backup solutions for this particular setup. I have been hearing mixed reviews of most backup solutions under 10.5.x... (In 10.4.x server I was relatively confident with Retrospect and had performed restores before).
--2 xServes, One web server, one for local services like mail, OD, AFP, Cal, etc. each has 2x 80gb drive (boot volume + mirror). Advanced server config.
--1x raid configured as raid6 with 4TB useable after formatting and parity. Data (user directory, mail store, calendar, web sites and database, etc) will be on the raid volumes, the 80 gb drives in xserves are only for OS and log files.
--All clients are using MacBook Pro's and most users have minimal data. Most data will be mail and quicktime videos (compressed for web, originals on mini dv tapes).
--MacBook Pro's already live, current server is SBS 2003 and it handles backups via Retrospect.
--Backups will have to be D2D, tape is not an option in this case. This means two external drives for backup (one on site and one off site, cycle on friday). Probably 2TB FW800 for each drive as entire raid isn't being backed up, some of it is scratch storage so 2 TB is plenty for now).
Naturally I want to use time machine but I am hearing of horror stories using time machine to backup advanced server in 10.5. Also seeing issues with cyrus (mail) and time machine (I will be running mail services). In addition, I don't think I could do any sort of cycle with the two external drives using time machine? The lack of configurability in time machine worries me. And finally, I don't know how time machine does with active database' (Ie: sql database for web server, I just don't know if time machine will cause problems when trying to back live database up). If someone has experience with time machine in a similar setup I'd love to hear your thoughts / suggestions.
Alternatively there is retrospect. We already own a license and I am familiar with administering it on 10.4.x. How reliable is it for backing up 10.5.2 clients and 10.5.2 server? Including active databses (Again the web server sql databases, etc? Kind of a pain restoring anything from retrospect (Especially entire server if / when it has to be done) but it was tried and true for me in 10.4.x server installations.
These MacBook pro's will also likely become mobile homes once all is said and done (But currently are not as the xServes are not installed yet). Time machine + mobile home directory seems like a lot of data being backed up that is probably redundant?
To top it all off, until new office is ready (All gigabit when that happens in ~1 year) network is as follows:
Servers have 100 mbit full duplex connection
Clients have 10mbit half duplex (This is where time machine really frightens me with hourly client backup).
Considering above, I can either:
A: Run proactive backup script from retrospect for all clients and then nightly backup for select raid volume contents + server boot volumes.
B: Not backup clients directly via retrospect and only backup contents of the raid volume (Which is where the mobile homes will be stored). Mobile home sync would be set to occur on login / logout only (Considering 10mbit client connections, I don't want active or user initiated sync heh).
Thoughts / suggestions? Thanks in advance, any suggestions are much appreciated. Hardware is set in stone but backup solution is not so most aspects of backup solution can be changed =)First of all, thanks for your reply!
Well I should clarify in that I wasn't going to operate "network" homes and that they were just going to be the mobile homes with sync only occurring at login / logout. Even then, I think I'd run in to issues with the 10base-T for the client systems. The servers are on 100base-T full duplex. Currently All of the Windows systems do the same and logging in / out isn't too terrible but I couldn't imagine actually running the home directories off the server on 10base-T.
Do you still think mobile homes would be too much with just the login / logout sync? If so, I'll simply avoid this option until we get our new building and gigabit networking all around in the next year.
You're correct in that all clients will be running 10.5.2.
If I am not running mobile homes, I suppose the easiest way then is to in fact backup clients via time machine to the raid volume and then backup the entire raid volume (Hence all of our sites, compressed video files and databases to a large external drive (Maybe I'll get a couple 3 or 4 TB raid drives instead... lol). Naturaly I'd select the scratch disk directories and tell time machine to ignore them. Only issue there being that I may run in to space concerns like you say. If it becomes a huge problem and apple still hasn't made TM more configurable by then, I could use the time machine editor app or modify the intervals myself. I'd rather not and will only do this if it becomes an issue
From what I can gather, time machine is not making complete duplicates of an active database (MS Entourage in this case) and is only backing up the changes. I was worried about how it handled this and whether it would detect a change and just backup the entire database again (Which would be a nightmare if it did this for our web directories as they have active databases running).
Do you know of time machine will wreak havoc with active databases (Like the ones our websites use, a couple small sql databases and one larger one).
I think time machine would work well with the method you suggested. So I can just set it to backup all clients to the raid volume and then setup time machine to backup the raid volume to the external disk? For my off site... I suppose I could just bring in the second identical external drive every Friday and copy the time machine backup database from the on site backup drive on to it and then get it out of there each evening.
As for backing up the servers themselves, they will not be storing much of anything and most everything will be pointed to the raid volume (Hence the 80GB drives). Because of this, the data on the servers themselves will not change THAT much compared to the raid volume which will change drastically every day so full backups of the servers is fine. Perhaps just setting psyncX (assuming it works in 10.5) to backup the 80GB boot volume for each server would be best? I could just set psyncX to backup each server boot volume to the same external drive the raid volume is backing up to and then each friday just copy the data from the on site drive to the external, killing two birds with one stone. (Tape would make this all easier but it isn't gonna happen in this case sigh).
I worry about the cyrus / mail issues I'm reading about on servers running time machine though. -
Time Machine backup mirrors Hard Drive, but doesn't back up
I noticed a few days ago that my external hard drive, on which I store my Time Machine backups, only mirrors the content of my Hard Drive instead of actually backing up. I don't know if it has anything to do with that fact that I finally recently upgraded from OS Snow Leopard to OS Lion, which is the last OS upgrade my late 2007 model MacBook will accept. I'm using 10.7.5, build 11G63
I can drag files from my Time Machine backup folders going back to Feb. 22, 2013 on to my desktop, but they do not copy. Instead, they move out onto the desk top from the Time Machine folders and the same files disappear from the equivalent hard drive file folders, as if they had been dragged to the desk top. Likewise, any file I drag from any hard drive folder to the desk top disappears from the equivalent Time Machine folder. Conversely, files moved from the desk top to either a Time Machine folder or its hard drive equivalent show up in the other.
I don't know the significance of the Feb. 22 date, since I upgraded to OS Lion sometime after that.
Any suggestions?I solved this myself. I found that, after upgrading to Mac OS Lion from Snow Leopard, some of the aliased folders in my Time Machine backup hard drive are not locked, but the regular folders are locked. Apparently this is new in Lion. (As I mentioned above, my MacBook is too old to upgrade to Mountain Lion.) I had based my query above on my ability to delete things from some aliased folders on my backup hard drive. Fortunately, they are locked in the equivalent non-aliased folders.

Backup of the Calendar data - iPad to iTunes ?
Bonjour,
A very simple question !
Is there a backup of the Calendar data made when you connect your iPad to iTunes ?
I don't want to sync my iPad calendar to Outlook or any other applications just to make sure I don't loose the Calendar data.
If it isn't the case is there applications that can export/import that data ?
Many thanks and cheers !
Gilles RF2Thanks for your suggestion. I solved the problem: the iPad was downloading an IOS update and the network went dead - it was also not the computer that the iPad had been synced with. I "reset" the system and went back to the original computer - I had to restore the iPad completely but it is now back and working.
