Suggestion: Way to contact discussion board hosts/webmasters

I'm sure that this suggestion has been made already by someone else in the past (likely multiple times), but I really would find it helpful in some cases to have some kind of support e-mail address for the discussions.
So if something technical goes wrong (forum downtimes, posts that disappear silently for unknown reasons, whatever...), it would be nice to have a person (or at least an e-mail address) to speak with and clarify things.

As a rule, AD Hosts don't maintain one to one contact with members via email, although there are systems in place that allow members to contact Hosts about issues that arise on this site:
One is this Feedback forum, where members may post "questions about how to use Apple Discussions and ... general constructive feedback about how the Discussions system is operating or how it may be improved." The type of issues you describe should generally be posted here.
Level 2 and above members are able to report issues about individual posts to the Hosts. If you have a personal issue with a member or post, use the 'Report this post' link, and explain your issue.
Level 4-5 members are able to report and occasionally discuss issues with the Hosts in the Lounge area.
So, all members are able to contact Discussions staff in one way or another, but no one should expect that their notifications will garner responses (or even acknowledgment) from AD staff.

What Software Runs The Apple Discussion Boards?

I really like the way the Apple Discussion boards work. They've seemed a bit slow this weekend, but other than that, I like how the system operates. I recently was comparing a bunch of forum software:

So, how can I setup a forum using the same system Apple has?

OT: How to contact a person at Apple regarding these discussion boards?

Sorry, I've looked at all the help pages, I see no way to contact a live person. I have some problems with my user account, I need to email somebody (basically, the record of my posts has disappeared, and I'm now down to zero - yet I had posts before).
Anyone know how to contact someone, somewhere? tanx...

One thing that's been mentioned since the new forum started this morning is that the board no longer shows a member's total number of posts. For example, I have more than 5,200 posts, but it only show 314 for me.
Also, the thread owner (the person who starts the thread) is the only one who can award points to posts. You should have a couple of buttons to click on for each post in your thread, so you can award either 10 points for a post that answers your question, or 5 points for a post that is helpful. You can only vote for one Answer post, and two Helpful posts.

I was wondering if you could have a discussion board for people to post things on a site I made using iWeb.

That's a yes and no answer…
You can find generic discussion boards free on the web. They normally use mySQL and PHP. I don't think you'd be able to host the discussion board directly on your iDisk. It normally needs a bit of help from a friendly ISP to switch on some things at their end.
But, you can host the discussion board on another server and have a link from your iWeb page.

I log onto my school website and firefox does not show the links to discussion boards? I have contacted the Professor and the links are showing on his end. I do online classes and have for a few years and have not had this problem before.

Auto numbering in Discussion Board List

Hi All ,
We have a requirement to auto generate number for each discussion in the Discussion board, Number should running sequence & should not repeat ever.
initially thought of using ID field for it , But numbering is not sequential because of replies, if we add any reply to discussion , reply is using next sequential number . for example.

we thought of maintaining a running number in a list, But creating a list only for storing running number felt too much..... and maintanance.
any other simple way to achieve this requirement.
Any suggestions on this would be helpful.

create a separate NEW_LIST with only one column [CURRENT_ID]
Next to your discussion board, add a workflow using SharePoint Designer, and attach to the post ( in a DB are existing 2 diff content types: post and messages ( replies ) ),and set it to start when a new post is addes
Next in the workflow, extract value from NEW_LIST [CURRENT_ID] , add +1, replace/update the new value in NEW_LIST [CURRENT_ID] , and next also update your DB's NEW_ID column with NEW_LIST [CURRENT_ID]

Granting permission to Discussion Board

    Using Sharepoint 2010 Server and the UI is there a way to
grant the Discussion Board permission to a group to: Add Discussion, Reply
to a Discussion and Delete a Discussion without granting Full Control or Contribute permissions?

Hi Shabeaut,
try below workaround:
1. Create two user group. One for add discussion and second for add reply. Then add users based on your need in groups
2. Give contribute permission to first group so that they can add discussion and give read rights to second group so they can only read.
3. Now as soon a discussion is created you have do break the permission inheritance to change the permission for both groups. So go to created discussion permission and give read access to first group and contribute to second group.
This is only OOTB solution for your requirement and this is bit hectic work for admin. I would suggest that create one custom event receiver, which can change the item level permission as soon as discussion is created.

Adding portions from discussion boards

On my website I want to add clips or posts from various discussion boards. One way I tried was to take a screen shot or picture of it. I imported it like a photograph, but it was too small. ANy other suggestions? (I am hesitant to just put a link incase the site goes down or away.)

Double-click your image to open it in the Preview app, scale it up and save it. Then you'll have a larger version to put in your iWeb site.
Also, Picnik is a free, web-based image-editing app which is easy to use.

Importing to Discussion Board Post from legacy source

Hi All,
Im sure im not the first to wonder or ask this question but here it goes.
We have recently moved out intranet to SharePoint 2013. We have rebuilt from the ground up using many of the out of box solutions as well as some third party apps and web parts however these is one aspect that is stumping us.
On our old intranet we use a SQL based forum/discussion board package which has
about ten years worth of posts, surveys, Q&As etc. As it is SQL based it is very easy for use to query and pull this legacy data however
we cannot find a way to import into SharePoint. We do not expect to import it all but would like to import at leas the last 12 months of submitted
data with at least basic fields like Title, description/content, tags, post date and post user. We do not mind other metadata being striped out like voting etc.
We have dug deep into the SharePoint database files to see if we can directly insert but
it is very complex and almost certainly not supported. We was also hoping for a discussion board data list view so we could bulk cut and paste. This is not ideal but would at least be a better option than manually inserting each post.
Does anybody have an idea where to start if at all possible.

All this means is that the rendering is slowed down by something in the design of the website. If it is a thread with over 500 posts, you probably will have difficulty viewing it, unless you have a high speed internet connection with low latency, enough hard disk space to cache the files, and/or view threads in tree mode. To use Tree mode, go to My Settings, and select Tree View under Topic Page View in the General SEttings.

Sometimes will happen if your internet service provider is behind a backbone with significant peering issues.
So how big is your hard drive?
How much free disk space is there?
Have you tried to empty the browser cache?
Does this issue happen with short threads as well as long ones?
Do you have any system modification software such as Speed Download, PthHelmet, or other browser enhancement software?
Are you sure all your software is known to be Snow Leopard compatible?

How do I get refund for App not performing well? Report problem link takes me to these discussion boards

I downloaded this App for ringtones (Ringtones 500.000) , purchased a full version of it, so I should be able to download unlimited number of ringtones. The problem is, it won't let me download any ringtones after 10, which is how free version of this App performs.
I have contacted developers, but they keep sending the instruction book to me with step-by-step inforamtion, which is out of date itself, but that is not a problem, I think in my case.
When I try to report a problem to Apple , using hte link on my receipt, it just takes me to a page with discussion boards and FAQ.
I would like to get $1.99 back instead of troubleshoot this any longer, because it seems App help support people are not understanding the problem.
I did try re-loading the App -didn't help either.

How to quickly delete contact in message screen without going all the way to contacts screen?

yeah forget it. iphone is so stupid. on blackberry I can just go directly to her name and delete her right there whereas on iphone if u go directly to her name and click edit there will be no option to delete her contact. u need to exit that screen, go to main menu then go to contacts then find her name again (among my 6500 contacts; i actually found an easier way so now I copy paste that person's name and find it easier that way in contacts) and then click edit and then go to the bottom of that edit page and click delete. very annoying and slow. some iphone feature are just inexplainably slow, long and annoying.

Actually in my opinion, the new file upload behavior in SharePoint 2013 is great. As we can click in the body and upload files via the ribbon INSERT tab.The
new 2013 discussion board allow attachments to be stored in any document libraries besides the default Site Asset library.
