Suggestions: 17" built-in display + external

The 17" build in display is nice, but it packs those 1920 x 1200 into a smaller space than most external monitors. I don't mind the generally smaller text and images of the built in display, however at work & home I use an external monitor as a dual display with the built-in.
I have to have the built-in closer to me to be able to see it (no biggie), but when I drag a window from the built-in to the external, it gets bigger. My home monitor is a 24" LCD with a native 1920x1200 resolution. Being the same, it's not so bad, but the work external is a 22"with 1680x1050 native res, so things don't drag back & forth neatly.
I'm wondering how everyone else has dealt with the vastly different pixel density of the built-in versus most other current external LCDs.

Gosh, I can't wait for the true resolution-independent operating system. It would be nice to be able to scale the OS to fit any size display we have, regardless of that pesky native resolution.
I loved the 1660 x 1050 of my old 17" MBP. But the new models are 1920 x 1200, much to small for me, so I settled on the 15". I'm planning on the 24" Apple LED cinema, which uses 1920 x 1200. That will be the best for me in the home environment.

Graphic distortion when switching between external and built-in display (rMBP)

Recently (within the past two weeks or so) I've noticed a strange issue when switching between my external display (Thunderbolt) and my built-in display on my 15" rMBP. The following issue seems to be specific to Photoshop CS6.
Typically, I'll have a PS document open on my external display and I'll wind up taking my to another location. If I close the PS document while on my built-in and then re-open it, I get all kinds of distortion and pixellation. Closing out PS and reopining, restarting, logging on/off; none of it seems to work. Do you have intel gpy as well as other graphic card? You may be viewing document on different gpu's. PS does not like multiple gpu's.

After Logic Board replacement Built in Display not working but External Monitor is

Had to replace logic board in my Mid 2009 17' MBP as it wasn't powering up at all.
Since putting in refurbished logic board MBP powers up and actually works perfectly with an external monitor but built in display is dead.
In 'About My Mac' initially it showed Color LCD as being connected., but now it doent.
Can anyone tell me if this is a problem of the refurbushed logic bioard from this ionfo - or if there is a w ay of being 100% sure that it is the logic board and not the display.

Shine a bright light at the screen and see if the picture is there, but the backlight is not there.
Working inside MacBook is very fussy work, and it is far too easy to make connections that seem fine, but do not quite work, or to disturb earlier work during re-assembly. Just to vex you even more, the screen connections go through the hinge area, and are subject to constant movement and stress.
I tend to first blame the last thing you changed (working inside your Mac in this case) as the source of the problem over random failure, until I can use classic techniques (such as substituting know-good parts) to rule random failures in or out.
If you did not follow proper grounding and static-elimination techniques, you can cause major damage inside. Tiny shocks can ruin electronics long before you feel the spark.

Laptop Built In Display and External Display not Working

Hi all, I have a HP Envy M6-1158ca, and recently my Built-in display stopped working. I plugged it into an external display via HDMI and it showed no input. It seems as though the laptop is not booting into Windows either, as usually whenever my laptop boots into windows, the fingerprint scanner blinks letting me know I can now sign in using it. I am extremly frustrated with this, and have an unbelieveable amount of stress because this was my only PC. Please respond as soon as possible, it would be much appreciated.

Yes.. i think thats what might have damaged it...Notebook should always be completely powered off with the battery out and ac adapter disconnected while replacing any internal hardware..
Shouldnt be a BIOS problem....but still you can check this link..

13" (2010) MacBook Pro Display settings are showing a second "built-in" display that doesn't exist

I have a 13" mid-2010 MacBook Pro, running OS X 10.10.2
I also have an LG 23MP75 monitor attached, at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (60Hz) using the display port to a VGA adapter. This is my standard configuration for in the office.
When I attached my laptop this morning, and logged in to my user id, my monitor wasn't in it's normal "location" -- that is, I couldn't drag the cursor to the left off my laptop desktop and onto the second monitor. I opened up my System settings and discovered the most unusual monitor configuration I've seen...
What makes it unusual is that I don't have a third monitor attached.
The left-most screen is my laptop, the right-most screen is my external display, and the centre "screen" shows as a "Built-in Display" at 1536 x 2048 resolution.
I have unplugged and re-plugged the display adapter; I have detected displays (with and without the external monitor attached). I haven't yet rebooted (as I wanted to get screen shots in case the problem "goes away.") and the centre display persists.
I can rearrange the displays, and put the external back to where I normally have it, but that ghost display still sits there.
I have had minor problems in the past, when I switch from my external monitor to a projector and then come back to my monitor - the MacBook doesn't always remember the screen resolution and I've had to Detect Displays, and sometimes reset the resolution manually. But it's a minor issue; given that I'm swapping external devices in and out while my computer is asleep, it doesn't surprise me.
I have used iScreen in the past to extend my desktop onto my iPad, but the iScreen preference is currently turned off AND I'm not using my iPad, nor is it currently on the same wifi network as my laptop (on a hunch, I turned off my wifi, but the ghost display persisted).
Two questions:
1) Where did this "ghost display" come from?
2) More importantly, how do I get rid of it?

S1 Yoga - How to turn off the built-in display/monitor?

Hi,
Trying to find a way/hotkey to turn off the built-in display whilst I'm connected to another external monitor with the Thinkpad S1 Yoga model. Do you guys know how to do it?
I could even remap any of the default hotkeys if someone knows how to do that as well, as the defaults are not too useful for me...

You can set the under power settings, to perform please go to control panel -- power option, in that click on ‘Change plan settings’ and click on ‘Change advanced power settings’, you will get new window with ‘Advanced Settings’ go to Display option and under ‘Turn off display after’ change the setting as per your requirement.

Amd catalyst & built-in display driver clash

I have a core i5 HP pavilion dv6 entertainment notebook pc with the following specs:
Processor: 2.53Ghz
RAM: 8 Gb
Operating system: Win 7 x64
AMD Radeon HD 6500M/5600/5700 Series: 1 GB
System Model: 3141se
I had a recovery partition on my laptop but a while back when I tried to run it, I kept on getting the same error message " your partition is of GPT style or something like that" and I had to wipe the whole drive and tried recovering from the backup DVDs, without any luck.
Having said that, I installed another copy of Win 7 with the original key provided and it was working fine. A couple of days back I installed a fresh copy of windows and now the problem I am facing is something like that:
Built-in intel display and AMD display driver installs, but I dont see anything in adapter section. Which means no graphics card is installed. When ever I install AMD catalyst driver, my windows turn black and stay that way forever (even though windows in running normally).
Whenever I disable built-in display driver from "device manager" it works fine. But I have had no luck installing AMD catalyst control, I tried literally every version available.
Kindly, help me fix this issue. My Laptop is a crap without the graphics card.

Use the recovery media to install the AMD graphics driver softpaq.
Choose the AMD video graphics softpaq from the list that appears. The following image is an example from a former HP product loan I was provided by HP. What you see will be a bit different since the notebooks are not in the same model range.

TS3354 "To play this movie in HD, you must have a PC with a built-in display or have it connected to a display that supports HDCP."

I recently reinstalled restored my Toshiba laptop with Windows 8 to factory condition. I reinstalled iTunes, and now when I try to play a movie, I get this error message: "To play (name of movie) you must have a PC with built-in display or have it connected to a display that has built in HDCP." This happens with both my downloaded movies and my iCloud movies. It never did this before. Any suggestions?

I have the exact same problem. I watched both AnchorMan 2 and The Hobbit Desolation of Smaug a week ago on my set up. BenQ monitor ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series Video card. No issues. Then I reformat and all of a sudden my purchased movies give me that error. It's so frustrating.
The odd part is for the Hobbit the itunes extras will start just like before, however I can't select a scene.
How is there no response to this? Are we missing something obivous? A default setting? Driver?

Built in display is gone

The model is W540 , with an embedded graphic card Intel HD 4600 and another graphic card Nvidia Quadro K2100M. And I had the built in display and an external DELL monitor via the VGA port. The OS is windows 8.1 64bit.
The system worked fine yesterday with both displays. Actually it is a new machine and just was received 2 days ago.
And I thought the pre-installed lenovo applications are something I don't need, so I removed most of them except the drivers.
And then I got the issue, that when I power on the box, lenovo logo is shown in the built in display and then the windows login gui is shown in the 2nd display. When I login, the built in display is dark.
I checked the device manager. The drivers of both graphic cards seem okay. And there are 2 dell monitors there but no built in display.
Here are some actions I took.
1) I tried the mini display port. It won't help. Same behaviors.
2) I tried to disable the intel hd 4600. And OS installed a display driver for the built-in display. So I had the built-in display but lost the external display. And the built-in display driver only allow a refresh rate of 64HZ and restricted the resolution to 1920*1200. So weired.
3) I tried to put all lenovo things back. Won't help.
4) I tried to install the inf file package, which was downloaded from lenovo web site, for the display again. Wont help too much.
5) I downloaded latest Nvidia driver for K2100M. And when I tried to install it, it said no compatitable device found. This happened this morning.
Any comments welcome. Thanks in advance.

It can be accomplished when an external display is connected, so I expect it can be done without an external display.

HT3131 Clamshell mode not working even after powering off and reconnecting display; external monitor goes black anyway

After connecting an external monitor (non-Mac) to my MacBook (Mac OSX 10.6.6) w/proper adaptor, setting up to use clamshell mode as per manual, the external still goes black even after putting MacBook to sleep, disconnecting and reconnecting external and powering up again as suggested in Support. Displays are set to Mirror. Also, when I open Displays in System preferences, 2 different windows for Resolution settings appear. Where have I gone wrong? This monitor (Viewsonic) came with it's own software for setup on a Windows PC, but of course it is not being used on the MacBook.
Any help would be appreciated!

Yes I followed all the procedueres....except for waking the computer using a keyboard click. For obvious reasons one is just inclined to open the top of the MacBook to wake it when the external goes dark...I did that twice, until I realized that very last step was needed to 'wake' it. It worked. Something so simple, easy to overlook I guess.
I did leave the monitors mirrored, fyi, if I don't then all I can access from the external are the resolution settings. This Viewsonic comes pre-loaded with Windows software of it's own and doesn't quite behanve the way my previous external did, but I got it figured out.

Multiple displays, external and airplay

I have a macbook air that I am using for a church presenation computer. We have Apple TV that is connected to our projecter, I would like to use that for the output display for my presentation. I also have an external monitor that I would like to use to mirror the built in display so I have something bigger to use for my computer display. Is this possible?

projector and ext monitor at the same time or different times? same time may be difficult for your air just depends on machine age/gpu hardware. different times shouldn't be a problem at all.

Resolution of built-in display with dvi adapter

I've connected my Imac to my Samsung DLP using a mini-dvi to s-video adapter. The display on the tv is fine, but the problem is that when ever the adapter is plugged in, I lose all widescreen resolutions for the built-in display. Does anyone know a way around this? If I used a mini-dvi to vga or hdmi adapter instead, would it do the same thing?

Then leave the adapter connected to the Mac for two reasons;
1. to prevent having to Detect and Adjust everytime it is connected.
2. to prevent ware and tare / damage to the Mac's Mini DVI port.
Mirroring will always cause the Mac's resolution to change, the system is using the best resolution to support both Mac and TV display's.

Why doesn't my built in display re-initialize after resuming from sleep mode?

I have a MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM) which I purchased a few years ago. I always have a secondary display monitor plugged in.
When I bought this system, it came with Snow Leopard and I recently upgraded to Lion. That's when this issue began:
If I physically fold the screen down and put the MacBook to sleep mode that way, often times when I resume my secondary display will return but my primary built in display will not - it just remains black. In some cases this creates a serious problem because my menu bar / dock are still on the main display and so I have no dock.
I notice the problem has not occurred if I put the unit to sleep using the Sleep command... but sometimes I forget.
I am wondering if anyone else is having this type of issue, and if there is a way to solve the issue? Is it possible this is a bug?

I don't agree. I had no problems at all with my MacBook Pro running Tiger. I initially did an upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and when the problems started I assumed it was a problem with the upgrade. I then completely erased and did a clean install of Leopard. The problem has actually gotten worse since I did the clean re-install.

As I mentioned in my opening post, I've gone through that song and dance more times than I can count. I've closed it, waited for as much as an hour, opened it back up...same problem. I've hard powered it down, closed it, disconnected the AC adapter, removed the battery, opened it, held down the power button for 15 seconds, re-installed the battery, reconnected the AC adapter, pushed the power button, and the display will still be dark. It's sometimes taken as many as 5 or 6 iterations of that process before it will finally reset whatever problem it was having and boot normally with a functioning display.
