Suggestions for 4.2.2 desktop

Is there a "Suggestion" forum or URL to send ideas on how to improve the Palm Desktop software?
I have 2:
What happened to copy item on the calendar? I would like to copy an appointment or event so I do not have to re-re--retype the same things over and over and over again. (I thought this problem went out with DOS!)
The lower-right most pane on Calendar shows Address or ToDO, can we get it to show the appointments detail also? (Just like Address, ToDo and Memo does now?) you either have to fiddle around with the pop-up notes or drill down to the event to see the detail.
Thanks for any help in advance.
Dave
P.S. transfer or forward this to the proper people or forum please. Thanks again!

Thanks for the suggestions, Atari800.
Unfortunately, I would not expect to see any changes made in either Palm Desktop 4.2 or 6.2.2 or any other version.  Palm has not owned the Palm Desktop (or even the Palm OS itself) for several years now, and even though Palm still sells Centro smartphones which  run on the Palm OS, the Palm OS and Palm Desktop are not the way of the future.

  • Suggestion for improvement to Broadband Desktop Ma...

We all know (those who have done it) that resetting the hub can cause problems at the exchange where it thinks it is a disconnection. Sometimes a wireless connection can drop and the current behaviour with the Desktop Manager connection troubleshooter is often to advise the user to reset the hub (often making matters worse). Would it not be better to build a link to the Home Hub Manager into the Desktop Manager trouble shooter so that the disconnection is made from there? This would mean that the exchange would recognise it as a planned disconnection rather than a sudden drop.
Its just an idea. I had to reset mine a couple of times this evening thanks to behavioural issues with BT FON signal and I have lost around 1000 kbps on my connection rate as a result.

    Hi
Even better like many suggest do not use the programme at all  and like you suggest disconnect the connection using the hub interface to disconnect the service

is there an EASY way to submit podcasts to the itunes store? i've tried creating podcasts in garageband, then somewhere after wordpress  itunes  doesn't recognize the feed.
my process has been (i am open to suggestions for other free and EASY services/methods):
garageband : create & edit audio. add 1400x1400 image.
    share to itunes.
    drag file to desktop.
upload .m4a file to google drive.
create a link post in wordpress using "podcast" tag & create "podcast" category.
click on "entries rss" in wordpress, which takes me to the rss subscribe page (which is basically just my wordpress address with "/feed" at the end.
    i copy this url.
go to itunes store > then "submit a podcast"
itunes gives me the error message "we had difficulty downloading episodes from your feed."
when i try to subscribe to my podcast in itunes, it does, but gives me no episodes available.
i went back into wordpress and changed settings/ reading settings to : "full text" from "summary"
    still the same error message.
i added a feedburner step after wordpress but got the same errors. i don't think i should have to add feedburner.
wordpress seems to be encapsulating the rss, what am i doing wrong?
this so much easier when you could go directly from garage band to iweb to mobileme; i miss those apple days (also idisk).

if anyone has a super EASY process, i would LOVE to know what it is. EASY, meaning no html and also free. there are many free online storage systems available, many of which i currently use. the above process was just me trying to figure it out, if you have an easier method, please share. thank you so much!

Cannot display the screen of my macbook on TV. OS is Lion 10.7.2. The Macbook is connected to the TV is over HDMI cable.  TV shows only the backgroud picture of the Lion OS and reacts even to mission control. Do you have any suggestions for help ?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

  • Suggestion for Apple or Third-party software company?

My first question is, where should I post the following suggestion for an improvement in FCP or for the creation of a third party software – suggested sites, blogs, etc.?
Next, my recommendation, and then my explanation of the reason why (including my personal semi-disaster):
Recommendation: That someone create a “Project Management” software for FCP (essentially a file management program that runs in the background) that organizes and tracks all of the files created during editing/post production – including the log/capture or log/transfer of the original footage, the audio files, stills, effects, etc, AND all of the files created by the program -- Live Type, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, and Color (especially color). The reason for this is that FCP has an incredibly complicated filing system that results in shots, files, documents, etc., being distributed all over the place – and not all known to the filmmaker or identified in the documentation. And, that condition can lead to disaster – see below.
Explanation: I just finished my first HD project using Studio 2, including sound track pro and color. After completing what I though was the absolute final version, I burned a one-off DVD and ran it by several filmmaker and non-film maker friends. They all spotted a small sound problem with one cut, so I went back to tweak it – and discovered that ALL of the footage had gone offline. I had nothing, nada, zilch. I had saved earlier sequences (rough cut, polished cut, etc.) and all the original footage appeared, but I had taken the final version into color for some corrections and adjustments, and ALL of those shots/files were missing.
After burning what I believed to be the final cut, I had cleaned up my hard disk, moving stuff to my backup hard disk, to my RAID array, and to the trash. So, after the initial shock and complete panic, several hours of searching all of these drives, led me to the file that contained the files that contained the color corrections – in my trash, which fortunately had not been emptied. I have no idea where the files were before or how they got into the trash – obviously they were not added to the scratch disk with all of the original footage.
Part of the difficulty of finding the shots was the discovery that color creates a file folder, that holds a set of file folders, each of which holds only one shot. In order to reconnect, I had to move the parent folder to the desktop, and then move all of the shots, one at a time. into a single folder, and then point reconnect to that folder. Problem solved.
However, now I face that question of archiving the project, moving all of the files off my hard drive so I can use the space for my next film, and I am terrified that I will leave something out, and not be able to recover the project in the future. Having a project management software that organizes and coordinates all of that would be a lifesaver – and well worth the purchase price.
Anyone who would like to explore this idea, please feel free to contact me – [email protected].

You've just learned a hard lesson. Put your current energy into your education, not finding a way to wallow in ignorance.
There already is a hardware device that will do what you want. It's called a "manual". In particular, the sections that relate to "where the program stores media". Pay very close attention to those sections and set up your computer so that all the scratch and storage pointers are aimed where you want. It's very simple to have them all go to one drive.
Then, when it's time to archive the project because you are starting a new project, just purchase another hard drive for the new project. They are absurdly inexpensive these days.
Remove the drive with your project to be archived from your computer (since you now know how to keep all the files organized, they will be all together) - and plug in a new disk for the next project.
If you want a backup, use carbon copy cloner to simply duplicate the drive (or simply just copy the relevant folders- you'll know which ones) to another drive (or get a RAID 1 device)
    good luck,
    x

  • Suggestions for disks from Power Mac G4 Tower?

    Hello fellow Mac users,
I still have the complete disk set for my old Power Mac G4 desktop system (it died and I've moved on to two MacBook Pros). Any suggestions for what I should do with them?
    Thanks for the advice

  • Router suggestions for 10/100/1000

Anyone have a suggestion for a router that would provide 6 ports at gigabit speeds? I would like to set up 2 Express's as a roaming wireless network and have 2 desktops that would benefit by having gigabit speed and 2 network printers. If I buy a new Airport Extreme, I'm still going to need some more ports.

Thanks, Duane. That option occurred to me too. I don't yet have any devices that are "n" capable, but I always like to plan ahead, thus the desire to have everything gigabit. I guess I'm wondering if you have a favorite brand of switch. I've never been happy with my current Netgear router. For some strange reason I have never been able to use the WAP when printing to my big color laser.

  • Any suggestions for improving my efficiency?

These are the two methods I've come up with to use what I have for making movies. One is for DVDs. The other is for making QuickTime MOV files for CDs. This is the process I have to use because we don't yet have our digital video camera that is firewire compatible with Final Cut.
For DVDs that will play in DVD players or media software on your computer:
    1. I take the Video_TS folder and run it through DVD Imager (free, macupdate.com) which converts it into an IMG file.
    2. I use the Apple Disk Utility (part of OS X) and burn the IMG file to a DVD.
    Simple enough.
Making our recorded footage editable in Final Cut and then exporting as a QuickTime movie is a little more complicated. There may be a simpler way to do all this (like get a fire-wire FC-compatible camera I can capture footage from) but this is the process I finally got to work:
    1. In the Video_TS folder are two VOB files. The larger one is the one that actually has your video on it. I use MPEG Streamclip (free, squared5.com) to remove the timebreaks (otherwise all you get is the poster frame) and convert it to a Quicktime MOV file. For settings, I just use Apple Video, 720x480 NTSC, and 30 fps. You need to buy the Apple Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20, apple.com) for this free software to work.
    2. Import the MOV file into Final Cut (I use Express which is $300 from apple.com) and do your editing and other yumminess. You'll need to render it first.
    3. Export as an MOV file ... there's no .mov extension and the Info says it's a Final Cut Express Movie file, not a QT MOV which makes me nervous so I I open it in QuickTime Pro ($30, apple.com) and export it using the Movie to Quicktime Movie setting.
    4. Then I burn my Quicktime movies to a CD.
Any suggestions for improving my efficiency?

"For DVDs that will play in DVD players..."
If what you want is just to make copies of a DVD you burned yourself (eg using iDVD or your DVD camcorder) there is a simpler way: just create an image of the DVD on your desktop using Disk Utility, and then burn it using Disk Utility.
You need to go into the process of copying the VIDEO_TS folder only if you want to make changes to it. For example you might need myDVDEdit, a very powerful free editor of the DVD structure (to change the menu button behaviour, or so). Or maybe if the image is of a different size, from a small DVD to a large one.

  • Any suggestions for maintenance on my 2008 MBP?

So I bought my 2.4Ghz MBP last October. It works pretty good, and I run all media software programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, Logic, Ableton Live) But after time it seems like my maching is running sluggish. I get the rainbow windmill a lot now (mainly when I'm on the internet) and it just seems to drag more....
Can anyone lend me some SOLID methods of maintenance??? I'm not familiar with any kind of maintenance on Macs.... Your help would be appreciated Thanks!

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • Suggestions for organizing folders?

I have way too many folders with subfolders, and my problem is I like to keep folders on my desktop with files I need to attend to in the near future. If I do not, then I will likely forget about it.
1.) Can anyone recommend a way to organize my folders so they always stay in the same spot in fixed places somewhere near the top of the screen, though I can still move other folders around on other parts of the screen? Almost like a dock for folders?
2.) Can anyone provide any other general suggestions for organizing folders for something like this?
    Thanks!

I don't know of a way to 'pin' certain folders to specific locations in the desktop grid without pinning all of the other folders as well. You could try [DragThing|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/633] or you could do what I do. I put my storage volumes in the dock and navigate them hierarchically and only put the folders that I need at the moment (projects) in the dock. It is not a good idea to have 'tons' of stuff on your desktop, especially if they are files (not necessarily folders.) The system has to store all of that info in RAM. At one point I thought I had a memory leak but it turned out to be a video file on the desktop that was using about a gig of RAM. Moved it into a folder and memory usage went back to normal.
According to you sig, you are running Tiger, but you are posting this on a Leopard forum. If you are using Leopard, you should also look into [Path Finder version 5|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6371/path-finder]. I would be very hard for me to live without it. There is +a lot+ of things you can do with it. (Including Smart Sorting, ie. list folders before files.) In my opinion, it is well worth the money.
    Hope this helps,
    D.

Do you have home owners insurance?  I believe most policies will cover computers or allow you to add it at some additional cost.

  • Moving to Japan - suggestions for iMac

I will soon be moving to Japan (for about two years, though I may come back to visit) and would kind of like to bring my iMac with me. I only recently got it as a gift (less than a year old) so I'd really rather not sell it and buy another one in Japan, as I'd not get nearly the value it's worth most likely.
Does anyone have any advice for transporting it with me? My main options seem to be finding a way to pack it in one of my suitcases (thus losing a LOT of other packing room, and risking the integrity of the computer) or having it shipped over, which I believe would be very expensive.
I do have a laptop, and I could just leave my iMac behind, but it seems like such a waste to not use a brand new wonderful desktop for the majority of two years. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to handle this, and what would be the most efficient option? Thank you in advance

I have carried my iMac on buses, trains and airplanes as carry-on baggage with an iLugger. Fortunately mine is an Early '06 17" iMac. It fits in an overhead bin. The same iLugger will carry a 20", but if yours is 24" they make an iLugger for that one but I have no idea if it would work for you as carry-on. If not, then I would just take the MacBook or ship it. Do you still have the original packing cartons? Perhaps an Apple Store or another reseller has an extra one. Apple ships them out from the factory in China in these cartons.

  • Replacement suggestion for Notes?

i am using Notational Velocity (just awesome) for long lists of things and Reminders for small tasks with the hope that i will integrate Reminders more into my daily routine with location services and my iphone in some way.
does anyone have a suggestion for small /lists/ of items? i would ideally like to be able to sync with my mac pro (which can only upgrade to Lion) and my iPhone.
any suggestions on something quick and light?
    thanks

The Apple store sells desktop drives of 1TB and 2TB. But they are generally priced like a "convenience store". Store employees are not on commission, but the prices of their drives are so steep (and unjustified) they may be embarrassed to recommend their own drives, and conflicted about recommending Brand X.
There has been a lot of consolidation in the Hard Drive manufacturing business. But there are very few "bad" drives on the market today. Most drives that you buy will work fine.
Personally, I dislike "Green" drives because they spin down by themselves whenever they feel like it, and there may be a delay in accessing your data waiting for the drive to spin up again. That works for backups, but is not OK for your main drives.
A large overall performance boost can be gained from placing only the System, Library, Applications, and hidden unix files on its own drive, and moving User files to a separate drive.
If yours is a MacBook Pro with a single slot for a notebook drive, not a 65lb tower with four drive bays, there are different considerations.
