Suggestions for backing up captured video digitally

Hi all,
My church is using an Imac (2.4ghz/1gb ram) to capture video of our church sermons. We use a Panasonic GS-320 which runs through a WD MyBook 500 gb external HD then into the Imac. We capture in Imovie directly then let the video file sit. Our intent is to upload these videos to the net for later streaming and such. Our problem is that we have 13-15gb videos that just sit, and now both hardrives are full. We would like to render these huge files to something smaller for the purpose of archiving but have them at a resolution that is still editable and to also add in simple titles and such later on. Right now I'm rendering to .mov (mpeg 4) @ 720x480. Any suggestions?

Archiving a smaller file at full-resolution is a bit of a contradiction! Especially when you add that you may want to edit that file later. DV material is 13GB/hour is arguably already the lowest file size you want for archiving/editing later. Smaller files via different forms of compression are meant for delivery, not archiving and/or editing. With a mini-DV camera you have the best archiving option of all formats: the tape itself. You could even send an edited sequence back to tape. To date, tape has been the most robust and reliable solution for any type of archiving. Data tape back up systems are fairly expensive. After DV tape comes hard drive storage. I strongly recommend investigating a hard drive tower. I personally use a MacGurus (http://www.macgurus.com/productpages/firewire/burlyfwenclosure.php) but there are several manufacturers. The advantage to such a system is that as hard drives fill up, you just pop a new one in and store the "old" one. And buying bare bones drive will save money in the long run over always buying a new external drive. And hard drives are cheap/GB. Cheaper than other storage methods. And faster. And besides tape, the most reliable. From there is is a simple matter of cost analysis: if a sermon is one-hour then you could fit let's say 30 sermons on one 500GB drive. A 500GB is roughly $100. That is $3 and change/sermon.

  • Any suggestions for backing up a macbook?  I think it's a Mac OX X v10.6?

Do you have any suggestions for backing up. I do not currently have a way to back up my laptop. I read many bad reviews for time machine. Is their a cheaper way to back up laptop (I assume it wouldn't be wireless like time machine)?

Time Machine works. It's free (except for the external disk you need to store the backup on!).
You may be confusing Time Machine (the backup program builtin to Leopard and Snow Leopard) with the Time Capsule, an Apple wifi router with a hard drive built in.
Either way, remember that people only come here when they have problems - so you'll see people complaining about Time Machine not working, because they don't post when things just work.
I use Time Machine for all my Macs. Works really, really well.
Additionally, I also use Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware) to make occasional copies of my boot disks.

  • What are the best sequence settings in FCP 5 for exporting screen capture video footage?

I capture video footage of websites in order to showcase in a demo reel. Using Snapz Pro, the compression type I have found to have the best quality is H264. When I take this footage into FCP (v5.1.4), I choose DV NTSC 48khz for the sequence setting. If I then select H264 for the sequence compression type, when I go to render I get a 'Codec error.'
The only way I am able to render properly is by choosing DV NTSC 48khz for the sequence setting and DV/DVCPRO-NTSC as my sequence compression type. The problem with this though is I get a perfect picture in the Viewer, but the picture quality in the Canvas (and the subsequent exported video) is slightly blurred.
I've been trying to find a solution to this problem off and on for years. I've finally decided now to get to the bottom of the issue. If you can solve this one you are my hero!
    Ted

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried using DVCPRO HD in the past, but the picture quality of the captured screen footage turns out blurry. The only codecs I've found that provide a perfectly clear image are H264, Animation and Uncompressed 8-bit. The problem with the latter two is that video files lasting only a few seconds measure in the 100s of MBs. Working with files that large would slow my editing and rendering down to a non-workable length.
I just don't understand why I can't edit H264 video if my sequence codec is set to H264. The 'Codec error' I get is baffling.

  • Dv cam suggestions for use w/Rode video mic...

A friend ordered a Panasonic PV-GS500 from J&R which was delivered DOA. He sent it back and was then told they had none to replace it as it was discontinued.
He needs a decent consumer DV cam ( up to or around a 1K ) with a hot shoe attachment to use in conjunction with the Rode video mic to record solo music performances.
    Suggestion...?
    Thanks

  • Captivate - bitrate suggestions for rescaled project w video only capable of "custom settings" publishing

Hello all, it seems Captivate really limits your MP4-video publishing/encoding options when you've rescaled the project (e.g., 150% size so 'stage' can accommodate both powerpoint and video).  I want to publish in MP4 video but Captivate blocks my attempts to use any of the 'preset' settings (e.g., iPad, youtube.., etc.).  It will only allow me to publish with "custom settings" which means I need to select the target and maximum bitrates, which Captivate seems to have as 2 and 4, respectively, as defaults.  (9 is the max available, btw).  I can also choose if I want to republish each frame (or 'slide', can't remember which).  I published the first time with the custom setting defaults (2 and 4) and also checked the box for republish each frame/slide.  I just now played the resultant MP4 file saved on my computer and the results are really horrible -- continual stuttering and restarting of the audio and video (and a seeming improper synchronization with the powerpoint slides (somewhat different from the slide change points that I had selected and saved previously in the "edit video timing" option under "video".   Again, this is just from playing it from my harddrive.  I didn't even bother trying to stream it as the results would probably be even worse.
It almost seems as if Captivate can't even handle the basic task of producing a powerpoint presentation that has one long video spread out across the different slides, with the video sharing space on the (enlarged) stage.
Very grateful for any insights or suggestions!
    Thanks

  • In need of advice for backing up HD Video

So we returned from a vacation,
where I shot all the video in HD 1080p.
We got back, and I used Final Cut Express to convert the AVCHD files from .mkv to .mov files.
All together, the total files come to a whopping 78.93 GB. Wow.
I need to back these up to DVD's or something
(My wife says she doesnt want them on an external hard drive, her last one died)
is there a way I could compress these?
or should I use quicktime/visualhub to bring down the quality a little?
any advice would be greatly appreciated
    thanks

    Solutions:
    1) ignore the wife and backup to a good hard drive such as a LaCie quadra. usb or firewire.
    2) Buy Time Capsule and backup to it.
    3) what would i do? Use MPEGStreamClip to make mp4 files , to control the file size. The picture will still look very good but it does not do 5.1 channel sound. Handbrake does but since the file is HD probably will crash while encoding so will VisualHub. Another consideration, MPEGStreamClip on a 2 gig HD movie will take 15 hrs on a Mac pro let alone an iMac.
Currently not too many programs will do HD encoding.
    4) backup to optical disc, I'd never do that ; too many compatibilty issues with different drives perceived for future usage.
    5) back to the wife, user should alway have three backup stategies; ie main drive then backup # 1 then backup #2. I've backup to external and internal hard drives for over a decade without problems.

  • Is There A Preferred Method for Backing Up Source Video?

Having put together my first movies (using both iMovie 06 and 08), I am staring at several gigs of video clips on my hard drive that I would like to archive off. But I don't quite know what to do to be sure that I am storing the original source clips (in case I want to re-edit at some later date).
I see that the clips are stored on the drive in iMovie packages; should I just copy these off to remote media? How compatible are these packages with other programs? Are the packages readable under other operating systems? Should I back up the clip files only?
    TIA,
    David

As I noted in my original post, I used both 06 and 08, due to a complicated set of circumstances that I won't go into here. Winston seems to be saying that I should copy the source files directly off the camera to DVD, which supports my original question. I will have to figure out how to do this. I presume I will plug the camera into the computer, and then use Finder to burn the files directly to DVD.
So far, I have made copies (both to DVD and network drive) of the 08 events, 06 projects, iDVD project file, the iDVD archive, and the iDVD img. All of which is why I was asking the question in the first place.
    Thanks all for the help,
    David

  • Suggestions for backing up pics?

I have over 50,000 pictures on my Macbook and backup to a network drive. I do this manually which can be very time consuming and certainly not perfect. Can I use Time Machine to check which photos have been backed up and backup up the missing ones to my network drive in the same folder? Folder mirroring I think it's called? If not, can someone suggest a way to automate this process?

Why not just start over, backing-up with an app that's designed to do that? Yes, it will take a while to back everything up again, but thereafter you'll have to do little or nothing.
Time Machine will back up to some network drives, but not all. See #2 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
An alternative would be the Chronosync app.

  • First Gen MacBook Pro and no firewire 800. Suggestions for capturing video?

My first gen MacBook Pro only has one Firewire 400 port and nothing else (I got in a argument with a mac store clerk regarding the truth of this statement). My external hard drive has one Firewire 400 port, two Firewire 800 ports, and 1 USB. So far as I know the standard for most video cameras are still Firewire 400, in which case daisy chaining is out of the question (considering I will be using that port to connect to my computer). Any suggestions on how to capture video straight from a deck to my external hard drive?
    Thanks!
    MacBookPro1,1   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I think you can use a FW800/400 adapter and daisy chain your camera to the drive.

  • Need a Suggestion For implementing the Digital Signature For the Documents

    Hi,
Currently I am working in a Document Management System. I need a Good Suggestion for how to implement a Digital Signature For the Documents.
    Thanks in Advance
    Sabarish V

Hmm, if you are not using Oracle Payroll, what are you using for payroll? I am wondering why you could not use your payroll system, whatever it is, to handle this reimbursement program.
Well, you may want to talk to Oracle support about how to handle this in Oracle iExpense. You can certainly handle advances for Expense Reports. You would then apply the advance to the expense report items. The catch is I don't think you can stop expense item entry after the adavance is satisfied. You would have to set up a work flow process of some kind to have the expense reports reviewed and only approve expenses that are applied to the advance, is what I am thinking. Not your ideal solution, but something to think about. It could be the Oracle folks might know of a sneaky way to handle this. What you are trying to do is unusual. Employee advances are common, but the idea of not being able to exceed the advance amount is what unusual about this. Normally you will accept any expenses over the advance amount and reimburse the employee for those extra amounts not advanced.
    Good luck.

  • Captured Captured Video Formats

I have some footage of an event that was captured from a Sony Handycam and a lot of other footage that was captured from a higher end HD camera.
When I play back the captured video from the higher end camera through Finder > QuickTime Player, it plays and sounds great in but once I import in the footage into final cut, the audio is "crackly" (that's my super tech term for audio not clear).
I double checked the sequence audio properties match the properties of the captured video (48mhz / 16 bit).
I'm sure this is a checkbox somewhere I'm missing.... any pointers?
    Thanks!

    Clip Settings:
    Audio: 2 Mono
    Vid Rate: 29.97
    Frame Size: 1440x1080
    Compressor: HDV 1080i
    Data Rate: 3.2 MB/sec
    Aud Rate: 48 KHz
    Aud Format: 16-Bit Integer
    Field Dominance: Upper (Odd)
    Sequence Settings:
    Rate: 48 KHz
    Depth: 16bit
    Config: Channel Grouped
Think I may have found something here... here's the audio settings for a clip that plays just fine in the sequence:
    Audio: 2 Mono
    Vid Rate: 29.97
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Compressor: DV/DVCPro
Data Rate: 3.6 MB / Sec
    Aud Rate: 48 KHz
    Aud Format: 16 Bit Integer
    Field Dominance: Lower (even)
Lots of differences in the video and the only thing that jumps out at me is the data rate for the audio. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Capturing video into Sony Vegas and s video doesn't funct

I can capture video from a DVD player through the ZS2 by feeding through the composite cables, but not s video. Feeding into the firewire port with a digital video camera works fine. However, I have to capture into Ulead, then move the clips into Sony Vegas where I want to edit. If I try to capture directly into Vegas there is some conflict keeping the program from loading, or it locks up the computer and I have to shut off the computer to get out. Also, I can't find what the cmss button is for.

    Hi,
To capture video using the A2 VE you'll need to use Ulead to do the initial capture. Once done and the video is on the PC you can then use your preferred Video creation tools to manipulate the file(s).
    Hope this hel

  • What is the best proejct setting for editing h.264 video?

I have captured hours of VHS footage via an Elgato Video Capture device for Mac.   Captured video is in H.264 format.
Trying to edit the video in Adobe Premiere Elements 10, but it is being very fussy.   Takes a long time to import media.  Once in and a few cuts are made, timeline drags and freezes repeatedly.   This was with a setting for HDV 720p 30.
Is my problem with the project setting?  I hope so.  But I also hope I can figure out what the proper setting should be.   Any thoughts?

  • Any suggestions for Xilinx products to support audio input or touch screens?

    Hi,
My boss just told me that I will get some funding from our department for new equipment purchase. We want to spend the money on Xilinx FPGA and tool kit.
We already have a ML605 evaluation board in our lab. Currently, we just make it  communicate with PC with UART cable, but we want to have better demonstrations in the future.
    (1) We want to use a microphone to record speech signals during real time and send the audio signals to FPGA;
    (2) We want to have a touch screen for users to write on, and the handwritten images will be send to the FPGA;
    (3) Any suggestions for fancier demonstration? Video detection or robots?
    For (1), maybe it is possible to just use ML605. But I heard something called "FMC card". So any suggestions on such products;
For (2), what kind of boards or cards should we purchase?
Also important,  we can also buy a new evaluation board with Virtex-7, if such boards already support (1) and (2).
Any suggestions will be appreciated :-)

I would recommend you to please get in touch with Authorized distributors they will help you.

  • Suggestions for capturing video from HD source needed

I'm wanting to capture video from my PS3 (using component or HDMI) and I have no idea what device is good. I'm not looking to spend a large sum of money but it has to be a USB or Firewire external device as I don't have a Mac Pro tower to install PCI cards... yet.
I was looking at the Hauppauge HD PVR. Noticed it's not compatible with Mac's but saw if I purchase the elgato EyeTV software that it would work. I'm worried about compatibility and skeptical of trusting two products from two companies to work together without issue.
So I was hoping people on here would have some suggestions.
    Thanks!

Hope its not too late of a reply but the Hauppauge HD PVR is awesome! (that is, if you don't pick up a defective unit).
I currently use one myself for capturing xbox 360 gaming clips on my hackintosh and have just figured out what the best settings are for native editing in FCP. You can read my reply in this thread for details:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=9485446
I've found 2 apps (one of which is EyeTV 3) that allow you to capture to a Mac via USB2 cable. There's EyeTV 3 and then there's HDPVR Capture which can be found here:
    http://www.steventoth.net/blog/products/hdpvr-capture/
I used HDPVR Capture first then got my hands on EyeTV 3 and I'll tell ya that EyeTV 3 has better export options. HDVPR-C outputs to M2TS or MP4. MP4 can be problematic when editing in FCP as I found out. But with EyeTV 3 you can export into a 100% native format for Final Cut Pro editing. HDPVR is cool though for a quick app to capture your clips. There's a free trial version that will only capture up to 2min. of footage.
Btw, if you go with EyeTV 3 make sure you perform a software update after you install it because it doesn't support the Hauppauge HD PVR right off the bat in version 3.0 ..you need version 3.1.1 which you get free when you check for updates.
    hope this helps!
