Suggestions for Backup Software

Hi, I am looking for backup software that is easy to use, with full backup each time and that is reasonably priced - your recommendations. Thanks - Bob61

Hi
I am looking for the same thing I think. I have a G4 Powerbook and I want a simple backup utility that will backup everything just in case my hard drive corrupts beyond repair. I had a Dantz on my old PowerMac and just hit backup and it would backup everything on the hard drive. I don't want to have to select files, drag them or at all be concerned that I am forgetting to back up some file. I was looking at the Dantz Retrospect V4.1 Express but I don't know if that is the latest, is it good or what. Is the SuperDuper a program that will just do a complete backup of the hard drive, looking for changes each subsequent time and backing all of them up?
Thanks for any help.
Hi Bob61
I've been using SuperDuper for a couple of months now
and really like it. It's priced at around $29 and as
shareware you can try it out first to see if it fits
your needs. It can be set up in a number of ways to
take care of your backup needs and will also do
bootable full backups which is, I guess, what you're
looking for. You can get it here:

Good luck and happy new year!

  • Suggestions for CRM software?

Does anyone have a suggestion for Mac-compatible CRM software with a single-user license (or anything under 3-4 users)?
I realize this is the Leopard forum, but there really isn't a forum for non-Apple software questions.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Have you looked at Marketcircle's 'DayLite' app?
I have used it for 4 years now (since V 1.0) and am still pretty happy with it. I thinks it's the best around so far.
Chrisnz -- i tried Daylite out and it seemed busy with features and quite slow... The most usable product I've found has been Highrise HQ from 37 Signals, but it is web based and has no pipeline. I am considering developing a custom app in filemaker at this point and may market it when done...

  • Reverting to SL form Lion, looking for backup software

I am reverting back to Snow Leopard from Lion.  Which backup software is the best before I reformat?

I did what you are planning to do.
First I booted up from the Snow Leopard DVD and then using Disk Utility I erased my HD.  Then I used Restore in Disk Utility as suggested above and selected my Time Machine drive to restore from.  Make sure you select a date when you did a SL backup.
It took awhile but everything worked as before.
    Good Luck

  • Basic LMS help, or suggestions for other software

I'm looking for the appropriate software to help me manage my lab.  I'm a bit new to any network managmenet software.  Right now it contains about 20 different switches and routers.  I have DCNM setup for my SAN and Nexus devices and we have deployed LMS as well.
I have LMS setup to aleart me of any failures or link issues etc...and its working well.
I'm trying to figure out how to get it to backup my device configs and save them out to an FTP server.  Is this something LMS can do?  If not any suggestions on what to use?  I've thought about just writing up some expect scripts to do this...but honestly I don't want to maintain it as new gear comes in quite a bit.
    Thanks!
    Chad

As Gaganjeet replied, CiscoWorks LMS can do this pretty well for Cisco devices.
If you have a mutli-vendor environment, the open source RANCID tool is very handy for this sort of thing. We use RANCID to pull configuration s of not only Cisco but also Juniper Netscreen, SRX and EX series, Citrix Netscaler, F5Big IP, Extreme switches, etc. Combine it with a viewer interface such as Trac and you have a very slick way to manage multi-vendor configurations.

  • Suggestion for backup drive for Air

I've enjoyed getting to know my MacBook Pro this past year or so, but I'm still new to the Airbook and need some assistance. I'm going to help an elderly friend move data from her old iMac to her 1st Gen. Airbook. I'm insisting she get a backup drive, but the Seagate Free Agent I recently bought won't work for her, because it is either FireWire, which Airbooks don't have, or it requires two powered USB ports. Given that the Air has one USB, would we be able to get around it by using a powered USB hub? Is there a specific drive that anyone can suggest? I'd prefer Mac formatted/ready to go, but not absolutely necessary. An external drive with a built in power supply tends to be bigger than we'd prefer. What about a USB flash drive? I don't think she's filled the 80 GB solid state drive on the Air so she doesn't likely need a huge capacity drive. Any help you can give would be most welcome.

    Hi SFMacNewbiew,
Happy to hear that you're enjoying your MacBook Pro.
I have the following drive currently:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/TR043ZM/A
What's nice about it, is that I have FW flexibility. The cable for the USB has the double USB cables and I've been backing up to it using the single USB (power & data) without problems for 4+ months now.
I've also used this one as well:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/TV523VC/A
When you think about it, the second one is a better bang for the buck. It is, however, USB only.
One thing you mentioned is that she has an older iMac, so getting a drive with a FW interface wouldn't be all that bad and with enough storage she could theoretically use the HD with both machines. I've yet to come across a reasonable priced portable HD that I've had to use with a powered USB-hub.
Regarding the thumb drives, I'd recommend against them. Even a "base install" with some data is 12-19 GB on most MacBook Airs unless she did a custom installation.

  • Recs for Backup Software (W 7)

I would like to know which program you guys use for backing up data to a NAS. I used Acronis for several months and thought all was well, but when disaster struck the backups were apparently corrupted and I couldn't restore anything. So all traces of that app have been wiped from my disks. Primarily, I'm looking for software that excels in incremental backups.
    Thanks.

    Now, that's really, really cautious!
Considering that all of my captured SD video and all of my HD video from my camera's memory card is stored on a RAID0, and also considering that all of my projects, incremental saves and exports are also stored on a RAID0, it may not be cautious enough.  By taking incrementals every 2 hours, I ensure that I will never lose more than 2 hours work should any disk in the RAID0 fail.  I also never erase any camera memory cards until at least 2 hours has passed since I copied the data to my computer.  I backup to a fault-tolerant RAID5 that can safely store all of the data on my RAID0.
I have a 4-disk RAID0, so the chances of my losing all data is 4 times greater than it is for a single hard disk.  I think 2-hour incremental backups are pretty darn reasonable!

  • Suggestions for CAD software?

Not sure if this is the best forum to post this question, but I am looking for good CAD application for Mac...I do not need anything too in depth (I'm a beginner) and all of my drawings will be primarily basic floor-plan layouts in 2D.
I've looked at VectorWorks Fundamentals, but it seems way too intimidating. I've also seen the CADtools plug-in by HotDoors for Adobe Illustrator, but I've read mixed reviews on that.
The few basics of CAD that I do know, I learned while using DesignCAD 17 for Windows, but they do not make a version for Mac.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Suggestions for hardware/software to VJ with videos from iTunes

I am a digital DJ / KJ and would like to incorporate the videos from my iTunes collection into my show. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

There occurred to me that I should have mentioned that I am assuming that you are using the trackpad and keyboard of the Mac Book which I can understand your Dad really disliking. My suggestion is that you blow a few bucks and get the extra keyboard and trackball as a present for your dad and plug it into the Mac Book USB port. You might also find it handy to hook up a monitor (20" or so). It will be so much easier to read the larger screen. You might also be aware that with mouse, keyboard and display hooked up you can close the lid on the Mac Book and the display will look a bit better not having to share the video processor with the Mac Book display.
The other thing I would mention is that it might be wise to download one of the programs that make an audible click through the speaker with each keyclick, mouse click and scroll wheel turn. I use a little Preference Pane called "Keyclick" which gives you many options on how you want it to sound (I make my keyboard sound like an old fashioned typewriter - which is a sound your Dad would be quite familiar with!) With this installed, your Dad will have much more feedback and it will make typing and mousing much easier for him.

  • Suggestions for Backup ACS v.5

       Hi,
I was wondering   if anybody could share how they have setup the backup  configuration.
When I compare the backup files from the ACS v.5 with those in v.4, the backup files are much larger. I had the backup files from the v. 4 server saved on a network share  on a windows server. Each dmp file was just 600 KB, so we had the last 20 Backups saved on the drive.
When I make a backup of  a ACS v.5 Configuation -  which I use for Tacacs device authentication, so we have a pretty large configuration with about 15000 devices on it, the backup is 800MB! We would quickly reach the limit of the drive...
what is sensible to do here ?
    Thankx!

    Hi Ida,
The ACS 5.x and 4.x are totally different as you already probably know, you are right in 4.x the backup size are very small they will almost never reach the MB size, however 5.x is a totally different story.
5.x has different backup files, one for configuration, one for configuration + CLI, one for logging section. The most common backup and the most important as well is the configuration backup, this one can be collected from the CLI using:
    ACS# acs backup backup-name repository repository-name
Or you can configure the ACS to collect configuration backup files by schedule from System Administration section, this option will collect the configuration settings only. However the backup size still will be MB size.
    Rate if it helps!

  • OpenSource Suggestions For HTTP Software

What is a good software that would allow users to make accounts and contribute poems or short stories. It would then allow guests or registered users to review it?
    Last edited by Sean-Der (2008-06-04 05:26:35)

I'd recommend to use a Wiki. I think that it would serve the task of creating/gathering poems or short stories best and there are quite a few easier ones which don't generate the overhead you have by using a full blown CMS. You might want to check http://wikimatrix.org - there you can have a look at almost all available wikis and compare them.

  • Suggestions for archival software

I realize I'm not supposed to ask about what to buy on this forum site, but I have gone everywhere else and no one can give me a good answer so I thought I'd come to the experts.
I use Aperture to archive my photos with metadata. Is there something similar for video? I am only a hobbyist with about 10 Terabytes of video clips in many camera formats. I do not use servers. I only use one MacBook Pro. I want to archive my video with metadata so I can easily search and use them in Final Cut Pro for my hobby.(I create about 10 videos a year). Is Final Cut Server overkill? If so, what else is there?
    Thanks,
    Brian

FCSvr will do what you want. I think it may be an overkill for a hobbyist.
Although it is meant to be an out-of-the-box solution, it is not. We have spent an enormous amount of time developing workflows and tuning the server for an environment of 30 edit stations and 2 x XSANs with a tape archive. For this type of environment it was essential to go down the FCSvr path.
Unlike Aperture there is a steep learning curve with server. But you can tag all of your media with metadata which may allow you to easily find it again in years to come.
It sounds like your needs are simple. FCSvr is really for multi-user environments which have complex workflows which benefit from the automation of a variety of tasks such as email notifications and transcoding to multiple formats. If I were you I would spend a bit of time familiarising yourself with the Finders 'Smart Folders' and use a sensible file-naming convention along with a simple logical file-tree to help organise your media.

  • Best backup software for individual folders?

I already use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of my Macintosh HD to my External HD, but now I'm looking for backup software that will back up just my music, photos, individual folders etc. I like Apple's Backup, but I'm not prepared to pay the money for .Mac when I'm only going to use 1 app. Any suggestions? (preferably freeware, but I don't mind shareware)

i like deja vu very much, although it, too is not free...

  • What do you guys suggest for playing guitar thru my Macbook Air? I use guitar pro software to learn tabs but I would like to be able to play along thru the computer. thanks

I used to play my guitar thru my PC using a line 6 Guitar port, Then I could play along with Guitar Pro tabs or MP3's. Now I have the Guitar Pro software on my Mac Air and I neeed an interface (which I can get at the Appple store- guitar plug to USB) but I neeed a suggestion for what software to run as an amp simulator, maybe line 6 is the best or maybe there are others I should check out. I know there are guitar "apps" for Ipads etc but this is a Mac. BTW I did not like the guitar sounds produced by Garageband. Thanks

I'm using GJABB with Logic Express 7.2.3 and have no problems.
However, I haven't started messing around with the modulation wheel yet which is pretty important in this libary since it controls volume. The sounds are great, though. I've just raised the mod wheel on each track to get the basic arrangement done, then I'll try the mod wheel for expression.
One thing about this library is that it pretty much forces you to do single horn lines since each patch is monophonic (like the real instrument). It does produce pretty nice results that way. I haven't tried upping the polyphony as I like the results this way.

  • D*mN SilverKeeper - Recommendations Needed 4 Backup Software

My hard drive crashed earlier last week...so everytime I did a full backup using SilverKeeper software...I assume it updated the files that were modified and saw the log of new files it added. Unfortunately, when I restored my system and started putting everything back on the new drive, MY EMAIL, ADDRESS BOOK, ICAL software was not updated as originally thought for ONE ENTIRE YEAR. Thank goodness I decided to copy over my business software data. Old hard drive is gone.
Or can I call Apple support and see if I can still retrieve the old drive?
Similar to Windows or Veritas Backup, is there a utility in Apple that does the backup and checking/updating files? What are some consumer recommendations for backup software?
    PS....I love 10.4.6 though

I agree with Superduper. You have various backup options which I've mentioned on my FAQ here:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
As for recovering the data, if it isn't a complete hard drive crash, and just a directory issue, you can try Alsoft Disk Warrior. If it is a hard drive crash, you may be able to salvage information with Prosoft Data Rescue. If that doesn't work a professional data recovery firm may be necessary.
By the way, Silverkeeper works well, though you need to make sure you are using the most current version. If you were and it didn't work, I suggest writing http://www.lacie.com/ about your issue.

  • Nokia C3-01, suggestions for next S/W update

I am using Nokia C3-01 from 2 weeks. It is nice phone with touch and type combination. I would like to add some suggestions for next software update.
    1.   Brightness control
    2.  When writing a text message, tapping # change only alphabet from capital to lower case, but missing numeric. I have to press 3-4 times to write numeric in text. Also have no 'option' to insert numeric. If I change other language (not English, which is automatic), then I can get numeric by tapping #. Nokia, please care it for next firmware update.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You can do a long press on the keys to get the numeric value instead of pressing it three to four times. This works for all Nokia since years, if they have keys
Or do a long press on the # key. This gives you the option to activate numeric input. Also a quite old feature for Nokia phones.
