Suggestions for (cheap) speakers for MacAir?

I realize I'm probably just old & going deaf, but the volume from the speakers is the WORST. Headphones are fine, but not always convenient. Any suggestions for inexpensive speakers I can plug in that will actually pump out some volume (not trying to rock the 'hood, just actually hear stuff while I'm away from the computer but in the same room). Logitech has some for $15, but I want to be sure they'll be louder than what's already coming out of the computer.
Thanks, all.

best computer speakers for very little money are a set of Klipsch
For $200 you get fantastic audio and you can dial them up to rattle the house

their extremely high rating speaks for themselves
I have a set.   Even best buy carries them.

My experience with steaming with Apple products is done from iTunes, my music and video files from iTunes on my iMac or video from Apple Store. I sync photos and music from iTunes with iPhone, iPod Touch and AppleTV.
I have a 2TB external disk that has my iTunes library on it. All my music, TV and movies. It is hosted on my iMac
I do not know if mkv video can be played on the iPad, maybe there is an app that can do it. According to the iPad specifications the video files have to be "Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format"

  • Looking for ext speakers for MacBook Pro

My built-in speakers go off a lot so looking for some speakers under $100 street price (could be used) to go with my MacBook Pro.  I listen to wide variety of music but the only ones I've tried so far, Logitech Z320's had no treble or upper midrange and I was very disappointed with their performance.  Don't need to sound like $200+ speakers, just something that can take the place of the ones in the MacBook so I am not tied to my headphones all the time.

Well… on the Windows front the MBP will run as well as any other PC laptop with a similar spec so on that you should have no problems. However, there are a couple of little quirks to running Windows on a Mac (mainly keyboard and mouse) but these are very minor.
As for the game, compare to other PC hardware with a similar spec. That should give you an idea of the system requires for any game you're interested in.
is it the answer, I think it's as good as, if not better, than any other option tyou have given there are few other that will run Max OS X.

  • Cheaper RAM for iMac G5

I was searching and searching for cheap RAM for my iMac. It seems most places sale RAM for Macintosh computers but charge up the butt for it. Mac comps, or atleast the iMac G5, use what should be cheaper CAS3 memory. While searching I found most places were selling 1GB sticks of "Mac" RAM for $130 or more. I found the memory configurator on Patriot Memory's website and found this model stick of 1GB RAM to be compatible with the iMac G5 2Ghz, PSD1G400. I got two pieces shipped for $212 (not from Patriot but a reseller). I found most other websites' memory configurator will have a 1GB stick of "Mac" RAM and then another stick of 1GB CAS3 RAM for alot cheaper but wouldn't confirm the 1GB CAS3 RAM as compatible for Mac. These websites also would not list the specs of the "Mac" RAM. Who knows. The "Mac" RAM might be the same as the other RAM but they just want to sell it for more. I haven't recieved my 2 sticks of RAM yet but I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.

Mac-specific RAM was available in recent months for the same price that you have quoted. Apparently RAM prices, both generic and Mac-specific, have risen since then. Prices will fall at some point in the future. I have tried generic RAM in my iMac G5 and had no problem with it. I got a nice sized rebate when I bought it. Some others have claimed to have had problems with generic RAM, however.

  • ITunes on MacBook Pro: Option for "kitchen" speakers vanished

Posted earlier in iTunes forum. Not answered. Suggested I post here.
It used to be, when running iTunes, I had an option bottom right for which speakers iTunes would come out of:
    • on MacBook Pro
    • in "kitchen" (through Airport)
    • both
Then, "suddenly," that option wasn't there anymore. The only (possible) change is the most recent Apple Update to OS X 10.5.2.
I've already gone into iTunes Preferences and made sure my MacBook Pro is searching for other speakers. I've already disconnected and shut down, then restarted router and Airport. No change.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Cat

Yesterday's Apple Update fixed the problem. Just as "mysteriously" the option to choose the "kitchen" speakers reappeared.

  • 1 set of speakers for tv and streaming

I was going to buy an AppleTV and connect a set of external speakers to my tv, so any devices connected to the tv will use those speakers, but what if I want to stream audio from an ipod or macbook to those same speakers?
I could buy a A/V receiver that is Airplay compatible or ...?   Any other suggestions?

I'm still confused.  If the speakers in question are connected to the tv, then wouldn't the tv have to be powered on all the time even if those speakers are 'selected' by the Apple TV.  If so, I'd have to connect the speakers to an Airplay base station or Airplay express and link that with the Apple TV so I don't have to have the tv powered on when I just want to stream music from my macbook.
Does that make sense?  I don't want to buy 2 separate sets of speakers for 2 different tasks - i.e. 1 set connected to an Airplay express so I can listen to streaming music stored on my Macbook and another set of speakers connected to the optical audio output of my plasma tv when I want to watch a movie on my DVD player or Dish receiver.  That's why I thought the Apple TV would be able to do both.  I suppose it can, but it just means I'd have to keep my plasma tv on all the time, even when I'm listening to streaming music.  The only other set up I can think of is to buy a 1st gen. Apple TV and direct the output to the Airplay express speakers when I want to watch a movie on my DVD player.
I'm not sure if I'm making this too complicated.

  • Ive got between £50 and £100 scottish pounds to spend on speakers for my 17" mac book pro, any  suggstions

I have been editing with Final Cut for many years, on many different Macs.  Currently using Final Cut Express v4 on a 2.66GHZ Core2Duo MacBookPro with 8GB RAM.  Ditto on my 3.06GHZ Core2Duo iMac with 8GB RAM.  It runs really well on both computers.  An i5 based Mac will do even better.
The amount of RAM definitely makes a difference if you are using things like Photoshop, Aperture, Lightroom, iMovie, Final Cut and similar apps.  They will run in 4GB RAM but they run a lot better with 8GB RAM or more.  If I were configuring a new Mac to run these kinds of programs, 8GB RAM would be my suggested minimum.

  • AirPlay speakers for outdoors

I'm looking for a set of AirPlay-compatible speakers for use outdoors on my patio.  I'd like to have them work *without* an AirPort Express, i.e., something like the the B&W Zeppelin Air or the iHome iW1, but for outdoor use.
    Any suggestions?

Since your TV is not an AirPlay server, it will not be able to use AirPlay to send audio to an AirPlay (Apple TV, AirPort Express Base Sation, or any other AirPlay-ready) device. Your Apple TV won't work either as it can only receive audio via AirPlay to be played back through either a TV or audio receiver.
At this point in time, I'm not aware of any manufacturer that offers something that you are looking for.

  • I need speakers for my scarlett 2I2?

I just bought Scarlett 2i2 for my Macbook pro. Using Logic Pro and Pro Tools. Any suggestions on good speakers to hook up to the scarlett 2I2 i am on budget looking to spend less then 100. Any suggestions would help.

Thanks Doc.... that does clear a few things up. I can't find wi-fi speakers to check prices though. My search returns seem to be mostly links to pages where people are asking where to find them (lol!), those crazy-price Phillipe Somebodyorother designer speakers, or some called Oyster from Avega that seem to be vaporware
I did find wireless speakers on Amazon, but they're not what I think of as wi-fi (using the Macbook's already-installed Airport) since you have to plug a transmitter into the computer (which makes it Yet Another Device To Be Unplugged when moving a laptop around).
It's beginning to sound like the Express + speakers is the best route, since that at least gets the wires off the desktop and not directly attached to the Macbook. I'm not sure what the plug on the iMac speakers is called. It would be nice if they worked since they don't require being plugged into the wall.

  • Just need a cheap printer for home use

Can sombody suggest a cheap color printer (say around $50) that I can use at home to just print simple documents. I want something I can hook in to my Airport Extreme by USB, that will let me print from both a PC and a Powerbook running Tiger.
I just bought a Lexmark Z735, and it doesn't seem to be at all Mac compatible. There are no Mac drivers, even on their website.

    Hi,
I found a really great ink jet printer for you that will work with both Mac & PC. It is from Epson and only costs $59.99. The Epson Stylus C68 offers the perfect solution for fast, affordable home printing. You can print your simple documents as well as photos too. Visit this link to learn more:

I did check out the Lexmark Z735 and you are correct, there is no driver supported for the Mac. It is for PCs only.

  • 5.1 (or 6.1) Speakers for a G5?

I have a G5 quad on order and want to get a set of 5.1 speakers for it. It seems that the new Mac only has a two channel stereo out jack and a optical out jack. I have a set of powered 5.1 speakers now but they don't have optical inputs and it seems most (however not all) use three stereo mini plugs for the signal from the computer. Does anyone out there have a suggestion for getting 5.1 or 6.1 audio out of my new Mac without getting a full blown receiver?

...it seems most (however not all) use three stereo mini plugs for the signal from the computer.
This is designed for a sound card (most PC's) that processes the various 5.1 surround sound formats and then just delivers the line level output to powered speakers.
You can get a M-Audio card, but the outputs don't match, you'll have to fanagle it and OS updates will cause you headaches. Also there is many surround sound formats used by DVD movies; Dolby, DTS, ProLogic, D2Audio etc. So what ever you select should be able to handle the decoding.
With a M-Audio card your processors will be taxed for the decoding most likely. Another negative. Another negative is the M-Audio card does not provde amplification, just line output. You'll be buying cables.
The PowerMac G5 has optical Toslink outputs with un-decoded 5.1 signals, it's actually best to have a seperate reciever to do the decoding as you can select from so many options for superior sound. Also you can hook up other devices to the reciever to manage all your sound to your 5.1 surround sound setup.
For instance I went the M-Audio route, it was a royal pain and it was still analog output, I was getting noise in the channel. There was delays and pains with OS updates.
So I opted for quality, and went with a nice Harmon/Kardon DPR 2005 with their matching HKTS-14 5.1 speakers at 120 watts each and 200 watts for the subwoofer.
I get 100 dB in the center with no distortion, the sound is incredibly sharp, powerful and clear. Even from iTMS music.
If your spending the money for a Quad, a mere $1200 more for a great sound system (not just from Harmond Kardon mind you, I get no comp for mentioning their products) is a small price to pay. Search online for best price. Make sure you get a remote, the G5's master sound may be disabled (mute works though)

  • What is the best dock with speakers for a new ipod classic

I need to purchase a new ipod classic and portiable dock with speakers for my organization.  What would be best for a classroom setting?

I would say Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign are the industry standard in design. But not the most affordable if your are on a tight budget. Photoshop elements has most of major features as the full version of Photoshop but is much cheaper. You can also download a trail version of the Adobe products from Adobe's website for your son to try out.
Also, look in the app store on the Featured page, there is a link on the right, "Apps for Designers". There you can find several image editing and vector programs he could try. There might be a few layout programs as well.
I would say if he is serious about getting into graphic design, Adobe products are the way to go.
