Suggestions for good sketch/illustrator app

I'm currently looking for a lightweight app (don't mind paying for it) that is good at creating simple illustrations. The illustrations are simple shapes with dimensions, line diagrams, and basic flow charts. Before I switched to my MBP, I used AutoCAD to create these items and export them to a JPG. That's a little overkill for some of the things I want to do at home. I've tried using AutoCAD with Parallels, but the images end up being too faded out due to the size reduction to fit onto a page. Any suggestions or leads will be appreciated. Thanks.

I would recommend OmniGraffle in the strongest possible terms. Five stars and then some.

It's utility is limited to exactly the kind of stuff you mentioned in your post, though, so it's by no means a general Adobe Illustrator replacement -- more of a Microsoft Visio replacement. If you instead want fewer diagramming features and more general illustration features (with a much more basic interface), you might try EazyDraw:

  • Need Suggestions For GOOD Free Ringtone App

Before the software update, I used Mabilo without any problems. Now, it doesn't work. So I'm searching for an app that is just as good, if not better than Mabilo. Any suggestions??

As previous post mentioned ZEDGE is a good free app for tones in addition to wallpapers. However the best solution might just be to put your own music on the phone through Windows Media Player (or whatever you use) and use RINGDROID to make your own

  • Need suggestions for good online Adobe classes in photoshop, ill. indesign etc.

Hi I am a graphic designer and would like some suggestions for good online Adobe classes ... I found
Adobe Master Series Online Training Library at the Adobe store and was wondering has anyone had good, bad ugly experience with this before I make the purchase. The suite offers training in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, and various Macromedia titles so it covers it all for me in one go.

A less expensive, non-subscription option would be http://www.vtc.com they offer many video cds for applications that have given many I know a leg up on learning an application.

  • Suggestion for a needed Walkman app improvement

    Dear Sirs,
Although I’ll sadly have to part from my Sony Z1 (for other issues reported on this forum and to Sony Xperia Care, namely the touchscreen issue), I would still like to leave a suggestion for the most underachieving app (imho) from a Sony Smartphone.
With the long tradition on audio excellence and the Walkman brand, I would suspect that it would be a strong point on a Sony Smartphone. Strangely enough, the Walkman app made me buy a third party app (PowerAmp) to get some basic functionality like I had on my old iPhone 3GS.
One of the most serious faults of the Walkman app is the lack of volume normalization between audio tracks. Although Sony does provide a workaround (which is nothing more than a dynamic range compressor), it doesn’t make any sense (imho) with today’s technology.
Replaygain (for instance) is a free (but very effective) way of normalizing volumes without degrading the sound quality. Many apps like PowerAmp have it, and even iTunes has a proprietary version of it built in on every device for many years now.
As I said before, this can be done with third-party apps and third-party media management software (like JRiver or the free Foobar), but by doing so, the user loses the integration provided by a unique manufacturer (Sony Media Go -> Sony Walkman).
I’m really just trying to help, as it gets harder to understand why Sony lacks on such elementary things audio-wise, when the same company has Walkmans supporting the highest definition audio formats available today.
I tend to relate Sony with high quality digital audio products, so it seems strange that this particular app is so rudimentary on these levels. The Walkman app is eye-candy, but it should also be “hear-candy”, which it isn’t.

You need to pass this on to the Sony delvelopers site as this is a user support forum

  • Suggestion for Exercise Motion Tracking App?

I have my favorite calorie (food) tracker (MyPlate) hooked into the new Health app.  I gather that the iOS 8 Health app, doesn't in itself monitor motion, attempt to interpret it as, say walking, climbing, rowing, rowing machine, etc.  I gather that it serves as a gathering point for health-related information, and, like calorie-intake, you need a separate App for interpreting motion and estimating calories burned.  I gather that the Apple Watch will help with that, but until that comes out...
Anybody have any favorite-app suggestions for interpreting motion and estimating calories burned?
The Nike+ app seems to be primarily about running, and presumably walking.  I'm guessing it won't be able to help with stationary exercisers.

    Interesting stuff:
Active Calories (in the Health app) says "No Data."
    When I tap the Active-Calories would-be graph:
    Show All Data:  No Data
Share Data:  With "My Plate" app.
Dietary Calories (calories eaten) clearly are getting forwarded from the "MyPlate" app.
    In the "MyPlate" app:
"Track my activity" is turned on.
Under exercise performed today, "iPhone Daily Steps," meaning that that app is clearly seeing my day-to-day activity, either by reading the accelerometers itself, or by getting it from Health, probably reading it itself.
When I enter the weight-lifting I did this morning into "MyPlate," the Health app doesn't see it, even though MyPlate is listed as a source of info for the Health app.  Ah, but I see that the Health app doesn't appear to have a switch to input exercise information (Carbohydrates, Dietary Calories, Dietary Cholesterol, Fiber, Protein, etc., but no switch for exercise performed.
Turning off "Track my activity" in the MyPlate app, on the Theory (guess anyway) that it's gobbling up the accelerometer data, and thus preventing the Health app from grabbing that information:  I did so and then took a quick walk around the building, and so far, still nothing shows up in the Health app.  I'll keep it off for a while, and see if anything accumulates in the Health app, but it looks like the MyPlate app is seeing my activity.

  • Any recommendations for good handwriting recognition app?

I've got an HP G3110 scanjet scanner and I'll be importing diaries. Any suggestions for a good application to do OCR for handwriting ( HWR - handwriting recognition)?

I've grumbled quite a bit about Nike's handling of the Nike+ website, so it's nice to have something positive to say about the company...
I went into my local Apple store and picked up a pair of Nike Flight headphones (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/1184000/wo/484La pM6sv1k3FyDEJH2vRI3ZMv/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.3.3) and I've been pleasantly surprised. The sound quality is reasonably good, and they're comfortable for me while jogging. (Since I know it was an issue for me, I'll mention that I wear glasses, and these are comfortable for me to run in with my glasses on.)
Again, I'm not praising the sound quality as being stellar, just good enough. I still use my Grado headphones when at home. But the Nike's are comfortable while running, and they're reasonably priced.

  • Suggestions for good expression tutorial/guide/reference?

I just spent 3 hours writing a simple XPath expression (at least I think it's an XPath expression). I kept making simple mistakes due to my lack of understanding of some of the internal workings of expressions in Oracle's BPEL tools. Little things, like the difference between bpws:getVariableData('corePerson','/ns6:Person/ns6:globalId') and $corePerson/ns6:globalId, kept tripping me up. While these are both valid expressions that compile and deploy perfectly fine, they do very different things... and I needed to use one in one place in my BPEL process and the other in another place in the same process.
Does anyone have any recommendations for good tutorial and reference material for working with XPath expressions? I'd love something that describes, in depth, all of the standard (and Oracle-specific) XPath functions... what they do and when/how to use them. Also, it would be great to get a better understanding of different types of expressions and where I might want to use each one (such as the example given above).
    Thanks!

  • Suggestions for good presentation design?

I am currently using the default font size for title and subtext that comes with the dark blue gradient template.
1.) Are there any general guideline for good presentation design with regards to having titles take two lines of text?
2.) Are there any general guidelines for what the title font size should be? I am wondering if I should make the title font size smaller to fit more characters.
    Thanks!!!

I have been an prenter/instructor for many years, and +*Presentation Zen*+ by Garr Reynolds is absolutely the best reference on this topic.
Beware of using too much text on your slides. Less is, most certainly, more when it comes to engaging your audience and keeping their attention. Be liberal with the use of large graphics and keep it fun for everyone involved.

  • Suggestion for a much needed app

I am a volunteer firefighter. I am dispatched to calls via a Motorola Monitor voice pager. Since approximately 84% of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers, and the vast majority of them use the same system that my department does, an app that would work just like my pager would be REALLY handy. Not to mention it would be cost effective to my department. I believe that there would be a large demand for an app like this.

Contact the manufacturers of the company/organisation that sends out the call despatch alerts and suggest it to them.
Or, find a developer on the AppStore that does something similar and suggest it to them.

  • New laptop spec suggestions for Photoshop and Illustrator

    Hi Everyone!
As I am sifting through the posts regarding laptops - I figured I'd post my own as my requirements are a little different.  I am looking to buy a new windows laptop.  I work with Photoshop and Illustrator and basic office programs like outlook, word and excel.  I have CS2 but will upgrade with the new laptop purchase - so running CS5.5 (or better) Photoshop and Illustrator is required.  I may or may not buy the whole Creative Suite as I only use these and Acrobat.  I want to spend what is required to get the job done well - not more - but I don't want to be cheap either – my laptop needs to work well & not hamper my workflow.  This will be my only computer.  Being efficient is key.  I use Adobe to do graphics for apparel: (embroideries, prints, logos, etc.) and small business (logos, print media, etc.).  I work in actual size – so a lot of what I do is on a 20 x 30 art board.  I do not work on videos – just print media and static artwork.  Suggestions on the specs I will need and/or actual laptop models would be great.  Thanks so much for your help - it is all so confusing!

  • Suggestions for Good AJAX forum/newsgroup/mailing list?

I'm in need of a rather specific UI implementation and I've

Good, generic, Ajax forums, are hard to find (I am still
    looking for one
myself). Library specific forums are usually very good
    instead, I know the
ones from YUI and jQuery are worth following. Of course, they
become more useful *after* you pick your library...

  • Need Suggestion For Good Case

I have posted before looking for some good suggestions on a good silicone-type skin and belt clip. Eventually I'm going to buy a JBL On-Stage III so I'l want something that can dock with the skin. I would also like a beltclip or holster but I don't think I'll get both in one. I'm probably going to have to find a good silicone skin and put velcro tape on it and a generic clip. I have had my eye on the iSkin Duo case but I cannot find a retailer in the Kansas City area that has them for the Touch. I hate to order it and not like it or it won"t dock with the JBL OS III. If anyone is familiar with this case or any other that will cover what I'm looking for I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
    Jon

The company Power Support makes very good cases for iPods. Their products are durable and nicely designed. The material that they use is top quality because you can tell by comparing some of the cheap ones. One trade off is that its very expensive. Most of those cases are around $30-35. Plus taxes and S&H it will go to about $40-45. Of course you can buy them at a brick-and-mortar store but the online store carries all of the products. Take a look...
