Suggestions for Higher End USB/Firewire Interface

I am looking for a pretty good quality interface that will let me record at least 2 tracks (stereo minijack doesn't seem to record to seperate tracks yes?) - but preferrably 4 or 8 tracks at a time into GarageBand.
One thing I've seen is this m-audio w/ 4 inputs but it looks lousy for Macs by the reviewers' accounts. http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-FireWire-410-Recording-Interface/dp/B0000TP588/sr= 1-11/qid=1172259647/ref=sr111/105-2727921-4590048?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
I have a Macbook pro. I also have a pretty nice 16 channel Mackie board -- but no way to get multiple tracks into GarageBand. Are there interfaces that are simply conduits to multiple tracks without the need for pricey pre's that I have in the mixer?
Budget = up to $400 or $500.
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

are there more mobile, non-rack options?
Can you explain what the problem is with the FirePod? I find it very mobile because I have not mounted it in any of our racks, I just pick it up and take it where I need it (jsut because it CAN be rack mounted doesn't mean you have to do so B-)>.
It's a fantastic interface and at a decent price for what it has.

Anyone know the TDP of this board?
In a comparison it looks practically identical to the 125W G46-970a.  Except the G46 has a sound optical out--the features list says the Gamer board doesn't--and the board pics confirm that.  Board looks to have better software than the G46--possibly better sound output, maybe.

  • External usb/firewire interface

    Hi,
I'm thinking of using getting an external USB Audio Interface, and would like some suggestions about products that work well with logic express and my Macbook Pro.
I need something that will allow all my band to hook at once (at least 5 inputs) and hear, with headphones, at the same time (at least 5 outputs).
I was considering the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra.
    Has anyone tried it?

I would second using a Firewire interface, I've had both USB and Firewire and found the latter to be far more steady. I think you would find a lot of people would warn you away from the M-audio interfaces, their drivers are famously poor. Presonus makes some really solid interfaces with great pre's. The Firestudio or FP-10 go for $300-$500 depending on where you shop and how good you are at talking salespeople down. From personal experience I would spend the extra money on the new Firestudio, I've been very happy with the one I've been working with.

  • Question on workflow for high end inkjet prints from InDesign CS4

Photographs are imaged in Photoshop using Adobe 1998 as a profile. These files are linked in InDesign. My question is how should I output the files from InDesign. I've tried "High Quality Print" saving the files as a PDF then parsing those files with Photoshop as high res files. But the files lack the quality in the original photoshop files.
My system in completely calibrated and I'm quite used to creating output for both offset printing (generally as per vendors instructions) as well us highend digital printing.
    Thanks ahead for your comments.

You need an ICC profile that defines the destination color space. In this case the high end ink jet.
This will be an RGB profile. You can use a factory profile corresponding to the printer model and paper (this would be part of the printer software install), or you can have a custom profile generated by reading a color target printed on the device. There are online services that can actually create the profile if you send them a print out. Follow their specific instructions if you choose to do this.
Once you have the print device ICC, check the Color Settings in ID. Make sure the RGB policy is "Preserve Embedded". As long as this was the setting at document creation, the image Adobe RGB profiles were honored.
To double check, look in the Links panel. Under ICC you should see Adobe RGB, not Document RGB.
You can also right or control click on an individual image. Go to Graphics: Image Color Settings. By profile it should say Adobe RGB, not Document RGB.
In the print dialog, Color Management, select Document radio button. Color Handling, Let InDesign Handle Colors. Printer Profile, select the Printer ICC. Do a small test print, then check the result to see if it's satisfactory.

  • No backlit keyboards for high end machines?

    Hi all,
Looking to buy a high end laptop, I narrowed my options to the Envy, the dv7t and the dv8t .None of these machines seem to offer a backlit keyboard, which for me is an important feature. They just have "hp color matching keyboard" listed in the specs and config pages. Does any1 know whether or not  it's possible to install such a keyboard, or somehow get it on one of these machines?
    Thanx
Message Edited by dfl on 11-02-2009 12:08 AM

I have also strongly considered purchasing the dv8t.  I noticed as I was pricing one a few months ago there was an option for a backlit keyboard at $50 extra.  Now after its been replaced with the dv8t quad series the option was gone.  I consider this a strong selling point and do not like having to search for a light in order to type in low light conditions.  Will HP eventually allow this as on option, or a special order part?  It would have been sold already if the option was available.  Any info is greatly appreciated.

  • External Drives: 2.5" (portable)? Interface for booting up (USB/Firewire)?

It's getting hard out there to find an external drive that has both USB and Firewire connections. But if something goes wrong with my system and I need to boot up from an external, does the iMac G5 require the external to be Firewire?
Also, there are a lot of external drives that are described as "portable" (2.5"). Can I use one of those portable drives as an external drive for a desktop system (like iMac G5 - has 3.5" internal drive)? Or are these 2.5" portable drives meant to be used just for laptops?
    Thanks all.

Yes, the boot drive had to be firewire, but you can use a 2.5 portable as long as it has OS X on it and is firewire(I use SuperDuper! to make a bootable clone).

  • Suggestion for high density Li-Battery

    Dear Apple manager,
I am writing to suggest to develop hi-density lithium-battery.
All Apple mobile devices need hi-density Li-battery for long time using, quick charging and safety.
I am working in Li-battery material company in China, our main product is manufacturing precursor for battery cathod material.
Our company own new technoloty "non-ammonia processing precursor", recently developed precursor "Co3O4 with doping 5% manganese"
I believe this material is the first case in the precursor world which manganese evenly spered inside Co3O4. If this material be used in Cathod,
the Li-battery's energy density will be higher than existing level and make longer batter's lifecycle, reduce charging time.
For your reference, I attach the new precursor "cobalt oxide with doping manganese"
If you any question, please feel free to contact me.

  • Need simple usb/firewire interface with digital in

I want the simplest, cheapest way to transfer the 44.1kHz/24bit digital output of my ProTools system into the usb or firewire port of my Mac (OS X). I don't want to convert to analog. Any ideas gratefully received!

    Hi,
This post is too confusing...do you have one or two Macs? Is your PT rig on one and your "Mac(OSX)" another computer?Well, here's what I can come up with...
    1. If you are using ProTools, why are you posting in a Logic Pro forum?Just thought I'd ask...
2.If it is in your Mac already, why do you want to go out of your computer and back into it? Your audio is already in your computer, simply bounce it out,and import it into the other software you want the audio to be used in...
3.If you are talking about 2 different computers, you can connect them via ehternet network and transfer your audio that way...without doing it "realtime playback."
4.If you are wanting to print your audio onto another computer...meaning what you said you wanted to do...then you could get a cheap 2 channel interface that is supported by your Mac(OSX)...whatever that is(without knowing if you have a new Intel chipset Mac or an older Mac,or a dual processor Mac,or a Quad Mac...it's hard to know what to recommend...)
    I hope this helps...

  • Recommendation for a good USB/Firewire hub

I have too many potential peripheral devices, and need more firewire and USB ports for my G5 iMac. I've read mixed reviews of the Belkin "mini" hub, including the fact that it is not powered.
Does anyone use one of these?
    is it good/bad/mediocre?

There is a nice free application that I use. It is Zenbe Lists. It actually syncs with a free web account that can be accessed from your desktop. Maybe not what you're looking for, but what do you have to lose if it's free? Good luck!

  • Reduced battery life for high-end MBP 15 2011?

I just bought a new MBP 15" 2011 model (2.2 GHz), an upgrade from my previous MBP 2009 (MacBookPro5,3; Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.66GHz)). I have noticed that the real world battery life is significantly worse than the previous model (3-4 hours vs. 6-7 hours). This doesn't seem due to the actual full charge capacity, since the MBP 2009 still has over 6000 mAh, whereas the new MBP 2011 shows around 7000mAh. Rather, it seems my MBP 2011 draws a lot more power from the battery than the MBP 2009. Could it be that the high-resolution matte screen is the culprit? FYI, the spec of my MBP 2011 is as follows (old specs in the parentheses):
    1. 512GB SSD (256GB)
    2. 8GB memory (4GB)
    3. high resolution matte screen (1680x1050) (glossy standard screen)

If I remember rightly the 2009 units didn't have on the fly graphics switching?
The new ones do. That means sometimes you can be on the more powerful graphics card with out realising - this will kill your battery life. Wrote about it here for the 2010 models: http://www.markc.me.uk/MarkC/Blog/Entries/2010/4/21Early_2010_Macbook_Pro_-_Battery_LifePoor.html
There's a great piece of software that will allow you to control & see which graphics card you're on - I bet if you stick to the integrated graphics you'll see your battery life improve significantly.
You can get that here: http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus

  • Is Nokia ready for high end market?

It is the time of smartphones.  With the introduction of 3G, distance and speed are not a barrier at all.  Prediction is that, we will see a shift from laptop to smartphones, something we experienced a few years ago when laptop replaced desktops. So, is Nokia really ready for this competitve market?  I believe they are still not ready looking at the way they support N series and E series.
My horror story started the day I purchased my N96, exactly 4 months back.   I have been watching the developments of N95 and wanted to own one.  Nokia released N96 by the time I made my decision.  The problem started when I started seeing low memory errors.  To my surprise, I noticed that Nokia uses phone memory for messages and N-gauge.  Configuring "mass memory" as the storage for messages didn't solve the problem completely as it failed to move all messagesI searched for some file explorer kind of applications to explore and clean phone memory.  I wish if Nokia had one.  The solution given to me by Nokia support was to reset the phone.  And, that cleared all data from my phone.  So, here are a list of my pain points
    - Does Nokia expect us to reset phone for every small issues.  Note that, these are not just phones, but smart phones.  More than contacts, I have my personal data, bookmarks, configurations, rss feeds, video feeds, radio stations, podcasts, GPS locations, blogging tools, applications etc. installed.  Getting back the phone in the same state will take days after a hard reset.  Do I agree if my laptop service center tells me that they have to format my harddisk everytime I take my laptop for servicing? Nokia Care's standard answer is to update the firmware (though I have the latest firmware) and reset the phone for any issues.  I only wish if Nokia trained their technicians to handle smartphones.
    - N96 reboots when I use GPS 50% of the times (when you use it for longer duration either with google map or Nokia map or sports tracker)
    - Phone hangs when you move from wifi hotspot to other places while wifi scan is going on (I don't see this issue after upgrading to 12.043)
    - There is no way to restart the phone when the phone hangs.  You have to take out the battery and put it back.
    - I get disconnected frequently when I'm on long calls.  Though I can blame my network provider, I know its not completely because of them.  My N70 doesn't have this problem.
    - I have been having a long battle with Nokia support and bluetooth issues.  I tried to use Motorola HT820 headset with this phone.  Phone hangs or reboots 90% time when I turn on the headset.  Nokia's standard answer is that Motorola HT820 is not a supported accessory.  I agree, but is it acceptable if phone reboots or hangs when I tried to use an unsupported accessory?  Only way to reboot the phone when it hangs is to remove the battery and place it back.  Why can't they give a reset switch hidden somewhere if they can't write bugfree code (and nonone can).  I have been doing this for the last one month while trying to convince Nokia that they have a problem with their bluetooth stack. I can prove that it happens only with A2DP profile.  I have been using a plantronics bluetooth headset without any problem.  I'm also using HT820 with my Nokia N70 which supports only HSP profile. Unfortunately, N96 doesn't provide an option to choose what profile you want to use when you pair a bluetooth headset.  I could have listened to music from my laptop (A2DP) while the headset is connected with phone (HSP), and I don't miss any calls.  I'm pretty sure it is a bug in their bluetooth stack; only if I could talk to one of their developers and explain the problem.
    - You know the commotion Nokia created when they removed VoIP stack from N96.  Thanks to Fring, I use VoIP and skype with N96 today.
    - The NetWork stack is so cumbursome.  Each applications have to define their own access points and rights.  Why can't it be in the platform level? Just imagin you doing this on your laptop for each of the applications.
    - Its better not to talk about the battery.  It comes for less than a day for me.  But, you can always blaim the usage.
How do we make Nokia listen to issues?  Do they have any customer feedback forum (please, not through the Nokia Care centers)?  I wish if they improve, after all, I still love my phone (Yes, I paid a good amount for this phone)

    N96, FW: 12.043

    Hi Jaimon,
I'm with you - I've had my N96 nearly six months and am VERY disappointed.
I just bought a Parrot Party Bluetooth speaker. A GREAT little unit. Needless to say, the implementation of A2DP leaves a LOT to be desired on the N96. Basically, it's like listening to a CD that skips every 10 seconds. The N96 cannot keep up the stream of data fast enough. It's VERY annoying.
I checked to make sure no other apps were running to make sure it wasn't something else running that was causing the problem, but no, it's rubbish (I have firmware 12.043). Other people in my office can connect their Blackberries etc... no problem. Plays back beautifully, but my N96? Piece of garbage.
Nokia have a LOT to answer for! Like you say, a phone that costs more than a laptop and this is the level of service we get. I have written TWICE via their online customer service form, and on each occasion received an email saying I can expect a response in 72 hours. I've never received ANYTHING!
Also, I had a Plantronics headset - Explorer 340. A nice headset. Same problems as mentioned elsewhere, would intermittently be disconnected and reconnected - very annoying. Last week, it paired but would not connect. Plantronics' support was wonderful! So efficient. They're exchanging the unit with a newer model (brand new) because they cannot replace the old model. Maybe that will work better. Meanwhile, because I NEED a headset for driving (and the supplied stereo headset is pathetic - cable too short, microphone ends up around your waist (USELESS!)) I bought (*gasp*) a Nokia BH-101. Paired fine with the N96 (as one would EXPECT), but the headset itself is lousy - such a poor design. I challenge anyone to make it fit in their ear comfortably enough as to be able to HEAR the bloody thing while driving. I have to keep one hand on it to keep it in my ear. USELESS NOKIA!
What is it WITH this company?! Why have they lost the plot?!??!

  • Another reason why pages may not be suitable for high end dtp

    hi
my company has been using Pages to lay out a 80 page graphic rich publication with 2 or 3 authors none of whom are graphic design trained. We previously used quark. pages is much better and faster in so many ways BUT we ran into 2 big problems which I am reengaging with now .
    1) a big doc got very slow on G4 machines used by some in the team.
    2) (and this is the killer) we found if you open a pages doc on a different mac then all the layout goes way out, I mean way out, ie text shows up on entirely different pages. and any fixed on page graophics will be on different pages and it is an absolute nightmare to fix.
this is with page set up at the same (A4) and no changes made to the file at all.
It may be due to a difference in the fonts installed on the different machines but it is really troubling and we couldnt find a way of sorting iut out. it caused us total nightgmares as it emerged when we were under deadline pressure so we ended having to use one machine for pages layout and output a pdf for use across the team.
we are now looking at altering this doc. any help gratefully received in getting a Pages doc that is consistent across several macs.

I am not sur eexactly what the mechanism is whereby font differences on two machines will cause this.
There is no information about the choice of font file format, but in general there are three components of a 'font' as follows :
    1. the graphics format for the glyphs (in practice either TrueType or Type 1), and
    2. the first level shaping in the CMAP Character Map tag along with first level spacing of the line layout, and
    3. the second level shaping in the MORT/MORX/GSUB tag along with second level spacing of the line layout.
Composition can reflow if any of the above factors change on any of the affected workstations. One way of trying to troubleshoot this would be to point all copies of Apple Pages to the same location for type, a location on a local network volume. This should be possible (I should think - don't have multiple Macs on OS X).
Also, I do not know where Apple Pages stores information about the settings in the Typography Palette. If one workstation applies complex composition using MORT/MORX/GSUB line layout, and this information is not included for other workstations, then the devil is in the door.
Which, if memory serves, was a point noted by Seybold a decade ago for advanced line layout.
    Best,
    Henrik
