Suggestions for new Intel Core i7 Extreme PC?

Hi all,
I'll be buying a new editing PC with the Intel® Core i7 Extreme 3.2GHz processors. Rather than build it myself, I'm looking for a fast and reliable PC from a manufacturer. For several years I used Dell workstations ... and they were stable, but not so fast.
The reason I'm switching is that Blackmagic hardware doesn't like Dell MOBO.
Any recommendations? Any opinions on Alienware? They seem a bit expensive, but are reported to be fast.
Thank you for your input!
Robert

Robert, look at http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b70da3/0
Unfortunately, the chips and motherboards to use two i7's will not be available until that nebulous "first quarter 2009"
Here is one preliminary benchmark: "Early tests conducted with Intel's upcoming Nehalem-based Xeons by TechRadar today show the processor running approximately twice as fast as its current equivalent. Based on the same basic design as Core i7 mainstream chips, a pair of 2.8GHz quad-core Xeon X5560 chips received a SPEC score of 160 in floating-point math tests versus 90 for two 3.4GHz Xeons from the current generation."

  • How concerned should I be on a new Intel Core i7 Extreme 990X CPU's erroneous sensor reading?

My concern being when the CPU is running at idle the 990x's core #5 temperature is less than the ambient room temperature, i.e. 20 degrees celsius while the ambient temperature is at 25 dgrees.  Also, the adjacent core #4 is at 36 degrees, which is higher than any of the other four cores.
Has anyone here with a 990x experienced something similar, or heard of something like this?  Could this be a serious flaw and should I contact Intel?
FYI, this replaces an i7 950 CPU due to it running in the mid to high 90 degrees celsius when transcoding in Encore CS 5.1.
The i7 990x transcodes a 7 minute test clip in less than 9 minutes and not one of the cores goes above 72 degrees celsius (the i7 950 took almost double that time).
    Hoping to hear from you.
    Cheers,
    Michael

    Gentlemen thank you for responding.
FYI NewEgg did replace the CPU and the new one has been in this computer for the past two days.  The new CPU is of an entirely different batch, but unfortunately still demonstrates a lower than believable temperature for one core.  This is better than the first one which had an excessively low temperature for one core and the adjacent one was much higher.
To illustrate the problem with the new CPU I ran it at 100% stress for more than 12 minutes and captured the attached images.
As you can see the CPU is overclocked by 28% (i.e. to 4.4 GHz)  and the temperatures never exceeded 71 degrees celsius for one core averaging at 68 degrees celsius for all of them.
Further, the idle temperatures were captured only a few minutes after the stress test.  Assuming the core numbering being from 1 through 6, core number 2 is the one that shows readings of 19 to 20 degrees when completely idle, while the ambient room temperature is 25 degrees celsius.
Considering one pays $1K for this, what happened to quality control, Intel???
Also, I have run Intel's test at the specified core speed and it shows a temperature headroom of 60 degrees celcuis, i.e. allowing for core operating temperatures at over 90 degrees celsius...
    Looking forward to your comments.
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • IWeb 2.0.1 vs 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme iMac

I'm attempting to run iWeb 2.0.1 on a new 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme iMac.
It crashes at startup, always, but oddly.
It opens and partially operates, but won't display the iWeb window. The menus are operational, but of course mostly dimmed since there's no object there to receive the commands. (For example, all File > New choices are dimmed.)
This is clean machine - no previous iWeb sites to convert.
In fact, iWeb doesn't create a ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites or domain.sites2 file when it opens.
Creating one on another system, transferring it, adjusting permissions, and opening it locked iWeb up entirely.
Creating a new user account and opening iWeb in it has no effect. Nor does logging on as root.
Deleting the entire iLife '08 suite, reinstalling from scratch, running Software Update, and then opening iWeb produces the same result. All the other iLife apps run fine.
Is anyone else able to get iWeb 2.0.1 to run on an Intel Core 2 Extreme system? It's DOA so far as I can tell.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
I've run out of espresso, and ideas.
    Thanks,
    Bryan

I was unable to launch iWeb 2.0 at first, but it turned out to be corrupted font caches. You can use the free Font Nuke program to delete your font caches (a harmless process):
    <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21536>
It's worth a try. Corrupt font caches can cause all sorts of inexplicable system problems.

  • Which VGA adaptor for my Intel Core 2 Duo iMac?

Hi folks... new to this forum. I'm looking to hook up my 20" iMac to a 2nd monitor (it’s a 20” Samsung VGA).
I’m very confused... So far, I've bought 2 different adaptors (neither of which fit the iMac):
Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter (which is listed as ”suitable for iMac Intel Core Duo”)
    http://store.apple.com/ie/product/M9320G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjE0NTg3Ng
Apple Mini VGA to VGA adaptor (which is listed as "suitable for iMac flat screen")
    http://store.apple.com/ie/product/M8639G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjE0NTg4Mg
Can anybody enlighten me which adaptor I need?... my iMac is a 20” iMac Core 2 Duo & I bought it new in April 2008.
    Thanks!

Perhaps is was packaged or repackaged incorrectly, because that is the correct adapter part # for the Intel iMac's including the Early 2008 model.

  • MSI P55 GD80 compatible with Intel COre i7 Extreme 965

hye there, i just wanted to know is the new p55 GD80 fits with intel core i7 extreme 965??..
as far as i concern, p55 mobo compatible with any i5 or i7 board, is that true.?

    The p55 stands for the chipset , so it's a p55 chipset and no x58 chipset ,.
    The p55 is only compatible with cori i5 and core i7 starting with 8... ( 860 , 870) it support only dual channel memory and not triple like the core i7 9... (920 , 940 , 950 965 ,975).
The core i5 and core i7 860 ,870 has the pci-e controller integrated so you have only 1x16 or 2x 8x8  or 1x8 and 2x4 for triple sli in sli or crossfire. The core i7 9.... with x58 chipset have 2x 16 pci-e or 1x16 and 2x8 for triple sli , so for highend multi gpu's the x58 has a advantage and it has triple channel memory , but it is a small advantage.
See here the socket  it support and if it has hyper-treathing or not.
The core i5 750 has no hyper-treathing the core i 7 does, no matter what socket ( 1156 or 1366)

  • Acrobat XI Pro performance with new Intel Core M processor

EDIT 21-Feb-2015: the issue seems to be with the power limitation of the new Intel Core M Broadwell processor. Enabling it in "full performance" mode significantly increases the performance. Nonetheless, in whichever power mode the computer is set, Microsoft Reader has no issue with any of the operations listed below.
    Hi,
I'm running Acrobat XI Pro on Windows 8.1 64-bit with high-res display (3200x1800, Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro), which uses the new Intel Core M Broadwell processor.
Zooming in and out and panning on the main application is very laggy, and full screen is EXTREMELY laggy. Also very noticeable delays in scrolling and page to page.
The computer is brand new, out of the box, no viruses or other software dragging the system down. Also, if I open the same files on the Microsoft Reader app, there is no lag at all in doing these operations.
I have found on the forum that some people have had lag and disabled Protected View and Enhanced Security. However, Protected View is not enabled on my installation, and disabling Enhanced Security has no effect.
Right now I would say that the zoom/pan performance is worse even than on Reader on a 5 year old Windows XP machine I tried to compare to.
Is there some other settings in Acrobat XI that could cause this issue?
    Thanks!
P.S. I couldn't find a more appropriate group other than "Acrobat Installation & Update Issues" as I didn't find a troubleshooting group or anything like that, but can re-categorize.

The new macs are putting them in their computers, but will the windows and intel duo be able to support the itunes application?

are you asking if it is compatible meaning will it

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n upgrade options for early Intel Core Duo iMac

I have an iMac from mid 2006. I recently purchased a Timecapsule - partly for the wireless back ups, and partly to upgrade my wireless network to 802.11n. There is a software upgrade from Apple that upgrades older 802.11 a/b/g Airport cards in the iMac to 'n' standard. Here is the link:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/D4141ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=MjIzMDkzNA
The page states that the upgrade is compatible "If you have a Mac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)". What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work. I have also tried to install Airport Extreme updates (2007002 and 2008004) and these report that the hardware is not compatible. Doing some searching around these forums and others, the issue with the original Core Duo iMacs not being upgradeable to 802.11n is out there - shame Apple weren't more explicit.
I have seen that there are various USB based 802.11n adapters available. Whilst searching on this topic, I also came across a site offering various Mac upgrades, including an upgrade to the Airport card to upgrade wireless capability from 802.11g to 802.11n. It looks like a straight replacement for the internal card - link here:
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=461
The company offering this is in the UK, but the product appears to be from a Sonnet, a US company. Does anyone out there have experience of installing this product (or having it installed) and can you comment on how it performs? Is it a seamless replacement for the original Airport card?

What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work.
If it says you need to have a Core "2" Duo processor, then it seems to me they are telling you very clearly that it will not work with the earlier Core (no "2") Duo iMacs.
The "late 2006" iMacs with Core 2 Duo (except for that one education model they mentioned) have wireless networking hardware that is 802.11n capable. When they were initially sold, Apple chose to NOT enable the "n" capability for some reason; maybe because the standard was still in flux and not enough testing had been done with the driver. Later, they enabled the "n" capability with a firmware update. But that was only possible because the wireless hardware was already capable of doing "n."
Earlier iMacs do not have this hardware so there is no way to enable it with a firmware or software update. 802.11g is plenty fast enough for Internet access (you won't notice a difference with "n"). If you are using Time Machine over wireless, it may take a while longer to do that initial backup (you could connected it by Ethernet cable when it is doing that initial backup), but subsequent backups are incremental, so the "g" versus "n" speed difference will not be as critical. Since your iMac is Core Duo (32-bit) and the future of Mac OS X is 64-bit, especially after Snow Leopard's release, it may be best to save your money and keep your iMac intact (not opened).

  • Suggestions for a laser printer for iMac Intel Core 2 duo?

    Hi all,
I'm tired of changing expensive ink cartridges, mostly because they dry out before I get to use them up. I find that I mostly do B & W text printing so don't need color and am thinking of getting an inexpensive B & W laser printer, figuring that the laser cartridges last a lot longer than ink ones. It would be nice to have one that could also do copying like a Xerox machine and in fact I saw some today at Staples which were all under $200.
My question is which one will actually work reliably with my iMac 17" Intel Core 2 Duo (1 gb RAM, 2GHtz)?
So is there anyone out there who has an iMac like mine as well as such a printer with which they are well satisfied?
    TIA
    Rick

    Hi Doug,
I can't locate your exact model (1013) on the net, only references to parts for it. I like the "plug and play" feature but it's possible that your model is no longer made. Too bad, because that would have been my choice I WILL, however, have the sledgehammer handy when I finally get a laser printer!
    Thanks.

  • Does 2GB ram stick exist for iMac Intel Core Duo?

looking to max out my iMac on Ram (at least 2GB) as i Find it real slow with the 512MB it comes standard with.
    1) Is my only option to buy 2 x 1GB or is there a 2GB stick on the market?
    2) If going for the 2 x 1GB am I going to see a significant difference beyond just having the standard 512MB paired to a new 1GB?
    Thanks

I bought 2 1GB sticks of Ram, installed them... ran my iMac 20 Intel core duo, then went to 1.5 GB of RAM. Honestly, I don't see the advantage of going to 2 GB. Personally save yourself the $$$ and wait about a year or 2 then upgrade. I am returning 1 stick which I paid 109 for. BTW Fry's electronics has Corsair 1 GB PC5300 sticks for 109.00 with a 20.00 rebate. Cosair if definitely a name you can trust.
Personally 1.5 GB is te magic number.
To comment on GLO's comment about pairs: There is no reason to match your memory. These iMac's do not run in dual channel mode. I contacted AppleCare and was told that there is no advantage running paired sticks of memory on the new machines.

  • New Intel Core i7 Haswell

Recently had a system fail and would like to build a new system.  I've been torn between waiting on the new Intel Haswell CPU's vs either the Intel Core i7-3770k or Intel Core i7-2600K.

    1 Samsung 1 TB HDD Sata 3 GB/s
I am now looking for some direction on configuration of the drives.  I could purchase additional drives.
I am still thinking about the mid tower case.  I have a number of old videos of scuba diving trips that I can store on external drives.  My space under a glass desk involves a smaller metal bracket which I can remove.  I have thought of a full size case and if so would like roller wheels on the bottom of the case.

By the way, there are literally hundreds of online fax services, some of them quite reasonable in prices. I have to tell you that faxes have become antiquated for business purposes. If you have a scanner, emailing a pdf file is easier to read. But if you just must fax it, just scan it, then you can use an online fax company.
I have to admit that I'm in business, and I have a fax machine that I haven't used in 2 years. It's just a printer/scanner. Even attorneys now only require signature pages to be faxed, but now you scan and email that.
I agree with this, but some businesses are still antiquated.... such as certain schools you may want to send transcripts to or certian states that need supplements to your tax return filing.  There are definately still a few occasional reasons why someone might need to fax something.
I'm not sure where you're located, but in this country you're not allowed to send your own transcripts to colleges. And you're not allowed to file taxes by fax (because they need to be machine readable).  But we can do most of it online, unless it's highly complex.
I read an article that if you're looking for a job in high technology and your resume has a fax number on it, employers almost always automatically reject you.
Anyways, I wasn't criticizing, I was just saying that giving you an alternative to an expensive solution.

  • Suggestions for new wifi router

    Hi to everyone,
my UFO airport extreme need to retire or at least work less, because it seems lately it freezing too often.
I've already tried to change channels but the freezes are still there.
I noticed that if the computer is in sleep mode or inactive for several time, it happening easily (the main mac is in the same room of the Airport+Modem) anyway, now I wondering what will be a good match for my needs.
Right now I have the Aiport Extreme connected to a US Robotics DSL Modem and I connect to the network a MacBook Pro, a Powerbook G4 and an iPhone.
I also use the Powerbook to manage the network because the mountain lion utility doesn't support the Extreme anymore.
My apartment isn't too big, about 90 squared meters and all the rooms are separeted more or less.
So about the network people spoke me highly about the Netgear routers or modem/routers, so I don't know if it's still good take the new Airport Express (the new Extreme is too much for my needs) or switch to a netgear products, what do you think guys?
I also just got a blue ray player, it's in the tv room, not ethernet/internet plugs there, so, my only chance is using wifi and, I was wondering If I can use the old Extreme to connect the blue ray via ethernet and extend at the same time the network of one of the routers I quoted above, the Express, the Netgear, or there are similar solutions with other brands?
Someone spoke me about Devolo devices too, anyone has experienced it?
What are the difference between the new Express and the Extreme one before the current model, it seems to be similiar isn'it? I asked because I saw some of them available as refurbished.
Thank you for your help guys!!
    Merry Christmas!
    Cheers.

the extreme is far better can handle more devices and longer range. the express would be better than netgear hands down.  I still recommend the extreme
