Suggestions for new stable system?

So I am looking at getting the MSI Neo2-FIS2R, and have been reading through all the problems people are posting on this forum.
I am not looking at doing any real overclocking just yet (I am fairly sure overclocking my old P2 eventually fried the board), but if things work out right, then maybe I'll look into it in the future.
I was planning the following system:
MSI Neo2-FIS2R
Pentium 4 3.0C 800FSB
1GB PC3200 Kingston mem kit (3-3-3)
Seagate 80GB SATA (plus an old 40GB IDE)
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis
XP Home
Antec True 380W PSU & case
Should this be a stable system with good performance with this motherboard? Do I really need to go for better memory (Geil 1GB PC3500 kit and Corsair Twinx 3200 kits are options)?
Thanks.

The numbers used by that program to determine the watts required are valid. You will get similar totals doing the exercise by hand.
I don't know if anyone is making a large power supply that is not switch mode, but in either case efficiency is irrelevant in supplying power to the computer. It wants a certaing number of amps at a certain voltage, which will give you watts. If you need 400W you can use a big old iron power supply with 50% efficiency so that the computer gets 400W and the cooling air gets 400W, or you can get a switch mode supply with 70% efficiency that gives the computer 400W and the cooling air 170W.
In either case the power supply watts rating is at the output, not at the input.
The power supply rocks009 is looking at is marginal for his current configuration. I would expect that he has one or two optical drives not included here, maybe a few USB devices.
This place  shows a price difference between the 380 and 480 of about $31 CDN, and the 550 of $48. CDN $ usually get divided by a big number when converting to another currency so the cost is marginal.
You may be right jaeger66, but I'll put up my electrical engineering degree against yours )

  • Feedback for new Email system - do you like it, or...

Does anyone know whether it is possible to give feedback  on the new email system to anyone in BT who might listen (and preferably do something about it)?
I am finding it much slower that the previous version; I don't like the pop up messages - email sent - do you really want to log out, etc; I don't like the fact that it times out constantly, even in the middle of an email.  I don't like the fact that it's greyed out every time you log back on, so you have to make the same decision about cookies half a dozen times every day - after telling it N times that I wanted "functional" only, I've now given up - it changes back every single time to the default system - so what's the point in asking.
I've been using email for a good few years now, other systems as well as BT, and have not come across anything that is quite so annoying, difficult to operate and generally "nannyish"
Is it just me, or is anyone else finding it a bitter pill to swallow?  Someone on the Forum suggested I use Thunderbird, but having looked into it, it seems to have very mixed reviews.  The only good thing about BT is the anti-virus software - would that still work if I went through another system?

    Hi AnneH,
Umpire here from the other thread.
I see you still haven't taken the plunge and tried an e-mail program. Not sure about mixed reviews of Thunderbird (are you sure they were recent reviews as it has been around for many years). I have used lots of different e-mail programs over the years and currently use Thunderbird on my home PC. Anyway, you can use any e-mail program you want to. Windows Live Mail will do the same job, as will many others.
The reason why most people recommend either Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail is just because they are the ones in very common use. They are from the same people (Mozilla and Microsoft) that also provide the commonly used Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers respectively.
You really need not worry about the security. In fact I would say that an e-mail program is always going to be a more secure way of accessing your e-mail accounts. A large proportion of computer malware is aimed at web browsers. Webmail is always going to be obvious target for those trying to steal your personal info. The virus checking that BT do on their mail servers will still be taking place in exactly the same way if you use an e-mail program. You will also still find things moved to the Spam folder by BT.
The commonly used PC security software packages will also fully integrate with the common e-mail programs and check messages for viruses in the background. E-mail programs often also offer additional spam checking services (in addition to the BT spam checks) which you can turn on/off should you wish to. Personally I find the BT checks sufficient and keep things simple.
Ask yourself this. If an e-mail program offered a lower, riskier level of security then why would so many people with more technical knowledge/experience use them? Also why would most large companies and corporations use them?
I appreciate that what you would like is for BT to drastically improve the webmail interface and allow you to just carry on using that stress free, but is that really likely to happen in the near future?

  • Suggestions for new Sci-Fi on Vision

    Hi Guys,
The Vision Programming Team have asked for Sci-Fi TV suggestions from Vision users, that we would like to see available via On Demand.
So, via an email from Mod DavidM, I was asked to start a new thread, because they want our feedback. And 'FRINGE' has now been added to the Sci-Fi category (via the 'Serious Lack of' thread). So they do listen!
So to kick off...my last post on the other, main Sci-Fi thread...
Sci-Fi I'd like to see on Vision...
The DUNE and CHILDREN OF DUNE TV mini series (original novels by Frank Herbert).
They are both donkey's years old (2000 & 2003) and so wouldn't cost that much to purchase.
Both mini series won numerous Emmy awards and were also rated as two of the top three highest-rated programs ever to be broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel.
Battlestar Galactica. Both the TV mini series and the full TV series (the highest ever rated show on the Sci-Fi Channel), which Sky aired between 2003 - 2009. Pure quality.
Also, as another plus, none of the above have ever been aired on British terrestrial television. So lots of potential for new viewers.
Anyone else with any gems you would like to see?
    Rank - Mostly Harmless.

    Hi
I am loving Fringe and I really liked series one of The Legend of the Seeker so looking forward to Season 2 when its possible
I am a total Sci Fi freak as is the rest of my family here are a list of some of the stuff we have watched over the years and lately that we like.
Star Trek - any of the series ie Enterprise, any of the captains
    Earth Final conflice
    Buck Rogers
Science fiction theatre - old fashioned stories
V either the old or the New I have not seen the New actually
space 1999 - loved this when I was a kid not sure how it would look now
The bionic man / women used to be good
    The Avengers
Lost in Space - probably not everyones cup of tea
Alien Nation - I was 50 50 on this one
Stargate any of the series watched them all and enjoyed them
    Tales from the Crypt
    Andromeda
    Firefly
    Quantum Leap
Dark Angel - this story line was  different
    The Outer Limits
    Xena
    Hercules
    Sliders
    Dr Who
    Torchwood
    The Twilight Zone
    X Files
Just some of the good stuff out there for Sci Fi fans would love to see more of it On Demand

  • Suggestions for new external HD

I have a G4 powerbook with 80 GB of HD which is pretty much maxed out. Looking for an external HD to transfer pics on to, and to do some backup with. (Currently i use my iDisk for backup of my Documents folder, so haven't really needed Backup). Any suggestions for a good ext HD though? LaCie? Toshiba?
Also, I'm thinking I should upgrade my 512 of memory to full gig of memory. All this doesn't need me to lead me down the path of a new MacBook instead, does it?!

    GoBraves:
Since you have a PowerPC Mac you should be sure to get a Firewire external HDD. This will enable you to make a bootable clone which will do double duty as a full backup and as an emergency boot drive.
Be sure that the HDD that you get is larger enough. Since they drives are now quite affordable I would not suggest anything less than 250 GB. You can partition this clone your HDD to a partition approximately the size of your internal HDD.
The element in a Firewire Drive that fails most often is the firewire bridge. You need to get a drive with the more reliable Oxford 911+ chipset like one of these external firewire HDDs at OWC.
    Good luck.

  • Suggestions for new iMac, hard drive and Thunderbolt vs FW800 vs USB3?

Ordering a new iMac 27" and leaning toward fusion drive,  and wondering if anyone has any suggestion or experiance with this drive? Any suggestions for drives would be welcome.
I am going to have to decide what to do as far as storage and I assume USB3 will be the best choice - been using FW800 and lots of new things coming.
Thanks for any input and suggestions.
    Don

anybody have any comments on the use of Thunderbolt vs USB3? I am using FW800 not and will be changing my 2 external drives. I have to keep FW800 on them so I am able to daisey-chain them. My use is normal and wondering if I should stay with USB3 & FW800 for external or make the TM drive a Thunderbolt. Those seem to be priced higher just wanted some suggestions, recommendations.
    Thanks,

  • Suggestions for new features & improvements to LCCS/ICS service

Firstly Hello, I am James from Influxis. if you got a suggestion for a possible improvements or new features to LCCS/ICS feel free to add your suggestions below and we look into it.
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi James,
With the offering from Adobe, it was possible to have a free account with $15/month of service offered.
It was really useful to developp applications, or to make demos applications for clients, and then paying when the application takes off only.
Does Influxis plan to offer something similar?

  • Suggestion for new Forum - Software Quality Assurance & Testing

Hi - I'm active in ASUG and a SIG Chair for Software Quality Assurance SIG.  I'm new to SDN and looked around a bit for where topics related to Software QA, Testing, Test tools & methodologies, etc. would be posted and discussed.  I haven't found any relevant forums.  A couple postings on SAP TAO (test tool) landed in the Solution Manager forum... looks like they were searching for a relevant home too.
We have good content and discussions on these topics on asug.com and I'd like to facilitate bringing some of these topics to the larger SDN community.  I started a blog, we sponsor webinars, etc.  What would you think of having a forum on SDN called Software Quality Assurance & Testing?  Or are there other suggestions for where I would start discussing this?  Maybe the forum's out there already but I just can't find it?
    Thanks!

    Count me in!
Currently the security aspects of good software development don't have a real home either, and are distributed over SCN in a rather thin and adhoc fasion by a few folks.
I am sure that such a forum would attract a lot of new attention to SCN on the customer side, as it is important for them.
It would also be irrefutable that the SCN Rules of Engagement are applied strictly to such a forum
    Cheers and good idea!

  • Activating transfer rules for new source system

    Hi
we are having 2 R/3 source system in BI. I had activated all the transfer rules with the first source system and now i have created a new source sytem connecting to a different R/3 client. I tried to change the transfer rules point to the new source system using the program RS_TRANSTRU_ACTIVATE_ALL giving the new source system and the infosource name. But i get the error "No Transfer Structure Selected" when i execute the prg.
how can i change the source system without creating the transfer rules for the new source but use the existing transfer rules and just change the source system assigned to it????
    Regards
    Sujai

    Hi Sujai,
There are many cases when this program is used.
When the Trans rules get de-activated due to impact,we need to first replicate the data source and activate the TR using this program. This generally occurs during the data loads in prd.
It does not makes sense to transport it when there r no changes done to the TR.So simply,u can use this program to activate.
If the program does not work, then you are left with the transport option.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Suggestions for new router/switch

I have a wired Ethernet network in my office, and have been using a Linksys BEFSR81 router with it since installation. The following machines are connected:
    MacPro early 2009 OSX.5.7
    G5 2.0 dual OSX.5.7
iMac flat panel 700 mHz OSX.4.11 (2 identical machines)
    HP 2300n printer
    Brother multifunction printer/fax/copier
The router is dying and needs to be replaced. The whole network is hard wired but I could use a wireless router (e.g. Linksys WRT310) with a switch (I need at least 6-7 ports total. The selection of wired-only routers is very limited; what would people suggest for replacing the Linksys BEFSR81?

Check these pages out first on how to install. NOTE, to look for the"GL" version, as the G, GL, GS, GX are all on the same page.
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G/GL/GS/GX
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Index:FAQ
For the GL, you need to flash 2 firmwares initially in the beginning.
You first need to flash a mini generic (or micro); just go with mini, to the router first. Then after the mini is installed, flash the standard generic.
To easily find the right versions. Go to the dd-wrt homepage, and then look for the tab that says "supported hardware". Click on that and type in: WRT54GL (which is your router name, the one I recommended). The model GL model will show up, and click on it. There you will have all the firmwares that can be used with the WRT54GL.
There are a few different ones, but the ones you need to download are the "mini generic" AND "standard generic" (non-usb standard generic, if you're connecting through ethernet. Only if you use usb to connect to the internet then the usb version). Look at the file name to confirm.
Flash mini first, then standard second. And you only have to do this once.
Make sure to read through the above installation guide carefully, and just basically take your time. Some things to look out for are mainly just 2 things:
    (1) Doing 30/30/30 hard-resets before AND after flashing.
    (2) Use Internet Explorer to do the initial flash. DO NOT use firefox (maybe not even safari). This is only for the initial flash with the linksys firmware on. Once dd-wrt firmware is on, any browser will do. This is in the install guide, but basically any PC with IE will do fine. If you don't have access to a PC, you can even use the "old" IE for mac. That will work too.
Again just take your time, read things, and double check them. It's actually a very easy process after you've done it once.
Reply back if you need any help

  • Suggestions For A Reporting System

    Hi,
I'm currently working a nefty Swing application and was looking for ideas as to how to develop a robust, extensible reporting system. I would appreciate any all suggestions to make the whole system work as efficiently as possible, with little difficulties when it comes to adding new reports and all.
Basically is here the structure I'm currently using:
    1. I have an abstract class called ReportNode which has the following basic structure:
    public abstract class ReportNode  {
         * Returns a List of Person objects which will be used to create the Report. This is the only
         * required method needs to be implemented by the report node subclasses. All other methods can be
         * overridden as required.
         * @return the List of Person objects to use for the report
        public abstract List<MemberData> getNodeData();
         * Returns a TableModel with the data to be displayed
         * @return a TableModel with the data to be displayed
        public TableModel getNodeDataModel() {
            return new DefaultTableModel();
// with several other methods which can be overriden and as necessary
}2. Each report is currently hard coded by extending the ReportNode object and overriding either one of the two methods stated to retrieve the required information which can then be displayed in a JTable, using a predefined TableModel (for the first method) or a the custom TableModel returned from the second.
Now I want to move the code out the hard coded format since the reports are growing and I would like suggestions or pointers on some best practices that can help me get the results I need. That is, suggestions as to
    - what type of database structure can be set up that can make generating custom reports possible
    - or perhaps I should go with Stored Procedures instead and come with some table design that can be used to pick the required variables for the procedures
    - should I stick with the JTable reporting (works quite well for data presentation, but can be tricky when it comes to printing at times)
    - or I should switch completely to some of the standard reporting systems like Jasper Reports (I tried it but found it a bit cumbersome for a beginner)
Any suggestions (however small) would be greatly appreciated.

  • Suggestions for New Firmware to X6.

Word suggestion to be included when typing message or text.
Can include 2 or 3 desktops.
Can integrate the file location of Gallery(Sounds and videos) with Phone/Mass Storage device.
Can give new icons/Colors for each number [MOBILE (Home/Business)]
    Include smiley's.
Birthday Reminders in Calender taking from contacts.(As like anniversary)

Thank you nokia for the recent release of v30. Below are what nokia is still missing and still need work on for nokia x6.
    Messaging
-Ability to select multiple messages with ease (Check boxes)
-Ability to search within the messages without having to use a Search app
-Ability to predict text in Qwerty mode, correct typos
-Allow users to set the preferred connection to sync emails (Currently it doesn't allow users to choose during first email configuration wizard)
-Remove "show open apps" from option menu (Redundant, this option is already available when holding middle key)
    Home screen
-Ability to display notification like older nokia smart phone models (received messages, missed calls) and able to integrate with facebook app to display facebook notification.
-API to be improved to allow apps to integrate with it, allow tweeter notification, facebook, friendster. (Must have option to select/disable)
    -Widget support
-Allow adding of more app short cuts (Can use the readily available technique used to display contacts)
    Music player
-Ability to search music within player
    -Improve music player performance
-Allow music player to update music contents (album art, album info)
    Connection manager
-Allow users to disable a specific type of connection  from taking place
-When a connection has already taken place especially if its WIFI, all other apps (browser, ovi store, music store, ovi contacts) must not ask what connection to take. This improves user friendliness
-Link to connection log (remove connection log from the "Log" application
-Allow a type of connection to be set as default: (Example I set WIFI as default) this makes all application to use WIFI or search for WIFI to begin connection
    Log
    - Log should be broken down to sub categories : Call log, Internet log, System log, Messaging log
-New feature to display system logs which is able to display error messages, crashes, hangs, and background apps that has performed something successfully (eg, successfully Connected at 12.00am)
-Allow security module to prevent access to all logs and allow users to choose to password protect their logs
    Menu
    - Allow users to move menu items easily (Ability to select multiple objects eg icon is highlighted to show that it is selected) and move items to another location in one go
    - Responsive UI, increase speeds of opening folders with large amount of files
    - Improve logic of screen taping: [single tap to select, double tap to open]. Currently this is not uniform throughout the system. Some functions require double tap some opens in single tap
    - Display available RAM (Random access memory) so that users know how many tasks can run or can be opened.
    System
    -Improved CPU management
    -Improved RAM/memory management
-Ability to isolate hanged application and display "App has hanged, end task?"
-Allow rotation to be locked from Options (Userful when on bed or in car )
    Browser
    -Tabbed browsing
-Allow users to hold screen on a link or anywhere on the screen to open a sub menu which displays : "Select text", "copy", "paste", "open new window"
-Better web rendering for big websites so that "Memory full please close some apps" is not displayed.
    -Better flash rendering
    -Improved flash player
-Extension support, allow community developers to create extensions
    -Improved buttons :
    Remove the Options and Stop
Replace with specific buttons/symbols that serves one function. (Currently Stop is able to change to Back, change to Close)
Buttons should be placed on a tab that hides when finger moves away and neatly slides up when finger comes close to the bottom
    Camera
-Allow settings to be saved example (color type :normal, vivid) so that it is available when camera starts up again
    Bluetooth
    - Allow users to choose where a file is to be saved
    - Separate received bluetooth files from Inbox.
    - Dedicated inbox for receiving bluetooth files (In a case of receive multiple files)
    - Battery saving mode : Caps speed and range in this mode
    Gallery
    -Improve the zooming speed
-Improve loading of large image files
-Ability to search for an image from the gallery itself
-Ability to create folders in the image gallery
    Video Player
-Ability to support codes that can be downloaded and installed or purchased
-New supported formats for commonaly used videos like dviX, rmvb, mkv
    Ovi store
    - Improve loading speed as it is such a small app
    - Integrate with TopApp
    Games
    - The games folder is unlogical as users can place anything in that folder
    - Should be a "Game Centre" which integrates it self to Ovi Store and ability to download games from there, and install together
-Sort games based on type :Action, Adventure, Sports,
-Support for more API to allow creative developers to make better games
    Some ridiculous logic
Ovi store, ovi music follows the internet settings of the browser. This confuses new users. Ovi store should have independant settings so should ovi music.
Thats all for now. You see nokia, if you improve these features you are allowing millions of customers to be at peace. We buy your product because we still have hope.
The creation of Nokia X6 has dissapointed many customers because of its instability, uniform features, speed. Functionality wise nokia lacks its "smart" as a smart phone. All the features I suggested above is "possible" to be worked on. Improve this features so that more customers will have faith on your future models.

  • Suggestion for new package management scheme

As was talked about in the INCOMING thread, Arch is growing and the devs are having trouble keeping up with maintaining packages. Arch is becoming disorganized and messy.
Well, Xentac and I were discussing this for a while, and we both seem to like a voting system. Arch shouldn't try to maintain every package out there, it's simply a waste of effort. If only one or two people want a package, they can build it themselves, it's not hard with ABS.
Arch devs should focus on keeping packages high quality, up to date, etc. They can't do this if there's 10,000 packages. So the solution would be that a package won't be included in the official repos (current, extra, unstable) unless it gets a certain number of votes, showing that lots of people really want the package, and it's "essential".
I don't know how many votes a package would need, but that's a little thing. I would suggest all packages in Extra/Unstable initially go up for this voting (once we implement it) and we make the vote quota be a little lower for this initial slimming, and that'll cut down the repos right there. All those packages that no one uses (that wont even get one vote) can be cut away. People can always vote them back if they become popular.
I don't want to have to do things like KDE, GNOME, etc myself, but I really don't mind maintaining my own little customizations, like Rhythmbox w/ XINE support (instead of Gstreamer). This vote system simply makes sure that a package is worth the developers time.
This goes with my idea of Arch as the perfect "Base" distro. People can build what they want on top of it.
This idea would also remove STAGING, as Arch wouldn't be accepting outside packages (though you're free to run your own repo or post PKGBUILDs on the forum). TESTING would be still used of course.
    Suggestions?

    beniro wrote:
I haven't really seen a single post in this thread that is without some merit, or at least an attempt at input.
The great thing about not being a larger distro is that the situation isn't as pressurized.  Still, though, we (meaning the community AND developers) still obviously want Arch to be the best it can be and that's what this thread is about.
So...are any of the ideas mentioned here feasible?  What do you think would be the best solution to creating a package release system that can handle Arch's current growth?
What about implementing a vote-based system for everything not in current?  Would this be done with a web-based interface by using "submitrequest/vote" or something...obviously only registered users should be voting, right?
Anyway, I think a great job is being done and this thread is simply a positive indication of the vitality of the community.  I think most of us fully recognize the resources of our developers and are simply wanting to find a way for them to bring us the best possible product.  Arch rules!
I agree. I think what we should do is just take this time that we have while Arch is still young and not as well known among the Linux community, and try to make it great, relieving the pressures that we'd get a lot of later (not to say that we wouldn't get any, just less, hopefully).
As for the package setup, isn't there some way that we could write some system to do this? I had mentioned it before. And, I just came up with a small system. It would work like this:
We get one main server, whose "job" would be to create and store packages, and users could download from that server to install, etc. Now, whenever someone on the package management team finds an updated version of a package, they could log in to a special area of the site meant specifically for those developers. Then, using the special program on the website/server, they could link to the .tar or .bz2 that contains the source and submit it, along with the file's information that would be included with the package when you install it (file name, version, etc.) into the web-based form. Then, they click submit, and the server processes that file after downloading it, runs a makepkg-type thing on it, and stores the produced package in a "Fresh" repository. Then, the developer can download the file and opt to test it. If they're sure that it's okay, then they can replace the new file over the old one.
Just an idea, tell me what you think... :?

  • X1 Suggestion for enhancement of System

HI all,Have had X1 for 1 week and wanted to make the following enhancement suggestions. 1) For DVR recordings change save system to allow for creation of folders for recording to be filed into  so recording are not in one big list all comingled and hard to get through.  Putting them in folders setup by enduser is a feature Dish and others have seems like a simple function to add for Comcast. 2) Develop a remote with a 30 sec forward skip button 3) 2 Key remote functions missing in todays day and age:  Button to change TV line input choice, Lighted remote buttons. 4) X1 remote badly needs a AUX button....the "All On" function works for the TV but does not allow for control to turn on our home theater receiver so the cutting edge tech now has us using 2 remotes when the old tech we used the one Comcast remote to control everything. Thanks!

It should be noted the Harmony 900 is discontinued and new units are expensive and getting very rare. I have a Harmony One and yesterday I ordered a refurbished 900. The new Harmony remotes are equally capable. In fact they offer smartphone and tablet control. However the new Harmony remotes are not designed as well as the 900. Having the 0-9 channel buttons on a touchscreen is a really bad idea. Personally I think the Harmony One and Harmony 900 have the best button layout and design of ANY universal remote. When Comcast was designing X1, one of their biggest motivations was removing buttons from the remote. I was told the TV input button on the silver remote was the one of the biggest sources of service calls. flguy2 is right. The only way to accomplish what you want is to get a good universal remote. However the old silver/Moto remote runs my Arris made X1 DVR just fine... flguy2 wrote:
Hi.  I have also had the X1 for about a week now.  Here are some additional comments regarding your ideas, plus a solution to your 30 skip ahead. 1) The folder idea is interesting, but I notice the X1 already "groups" saved shows.  So for example, all my American Idol recordings are rolled up into one and I just have to click it to expand.  Have you noticed this?  Maybe you are referring to folders as generic names you can make up, such as "Space" or "Documentaries" and manually move your shows in there?  Also, at the very top you can sort by date or A-Z.  The old Scientific Atlanta I had use to allow a third sort by channel, so that is the only thing missing in my opinion.  Also, you can search for content and it will pull up your saved recordings.  If you have the X1 remote control/voice app for your iPhone or tablet, you can just speak what you want and it will show up.  Very handy. 2) You can implement a 30 sec skip button using the instructions from this page: http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57606944-285/how-to-program-a-30-second-skip-button-for-xfinity-x1/  It worked flawlessly for me.  And by the way, this trick programs the skip-ahead inside the BOX not the remote.  I actually use a Harmony 900 for everything and once I implemented the skip ahead using the Xfinity remote, I didn't have to change anything on my Harmony, it just worked. 3) Buy a universal remote like the Harmony 900 for this.  The latest Harmonys use RF just like the Xfinity remote.  So for example, on my Harmony 900 there is an LCD screen at the top where I can program various functions for any one of my media devices (speakers, TV, etc).  The Harmony remote also has backlit keys, which light up when you move the remote around. 4) See #3.  The programmable universal remotes are great because there is SO much customization you can do.  The Harmony brand by Logitech comes with a USB and you program it via their web site or separately downloaded software.  If this sounds too complicated than you may not like it, but it will ultimately give you exactly what you want.  You can even control fans and lights with it, pretty much anything that has an IR or RF receiver built into it. Additional idea/improvement:  I miss the ability to skip ahead by DAY in the channel guide.  For example, if I am the Discovery Channel, I would like to see what is on at 8pm the following 4 nights.  There is no easy way to do this.  With the old non-X1 guide you could select your channel then the whole guide would become a vertical listing of the shows on that channel for upcoming times and you could page up/down by day.  I don't see a way to do that with the X1.

  • I understand there may be a new Apple TV coming out in 2014. Hopefully this could be a game changer in our lives and not just a product upgrade. I also understand that Apple does not except unsolicited ideas and suggestions for new products.

This is totally reasonable. That being said, understanding this is neither a "suggestion" nor an "idea", I was wondering how great it would be if the new Apple TV would have built in Radio Frequency control capability for all HT products. Comcast has RF control with it's new x1 box but it does not work with other components like a DVR, AV Receiver or other HT devices. Logitech offers remotes that one has to program with all the codes per individual manufacturer but this still requires an RF base station and external blasters.
If the Apple had a relationship with the different audio/video manufacturers so that one could simply use an Apple TV remote ( or optionally use ipad, iPhone, MAC ) to control everything HT, then this simplicity would capture a huge audience in a big way!! Of course..........this is not a suggestion or an idea :-).

No idea what you mean by HT devices, but it is unlikely Apple would release a product to support 3rd party devices.  On top of which changing the ATV remote to be RF instead of IR would break all the existing remotes that are able to work with ATV.  And would be MUCH more expensitve.
Comcast has RF control with it's new x1
Only becasue they HAVE to because they only provide one actual cable box, with other dumb box termtinals.   So remotes have to be able to work in other rooms since they all have to connect to the real cable box.
but it does not work with other components like a DVR, AV Receiver or other HT devices.
Right, since once you switch to RF you break compatablity with all the other IR devices out there which is pretty much 99% of them.
If the Apple had a relationship with the different audio/video manufacturers so
Apples whole business model is locking out other manufatures.
