Suggestions for power source?

I need a power source so I can use my Powerbook G4 on a flight. Any recommendations? It'll be on American Airlines, which I believe uses an cigarette lighter-style outlet, not EmPower.

Hi, tkivi1. I recently bought this adapter. Very nice — it's tiny, and works with 12V car lighter or Empower port.

  • Is there a MagSafe 2 compatible portable external power source for the retina display MacBook Pro?

I’m using a retina display MacBook Pro with the MagSafe 2 connection.   I would like to have a portable external power source to extend the use of my laptop on long field trips where I am away from power sources. Swapping batteries is not an option for this generation of MacBook Pros.  There seem to be many options for PC’s and even iPhones/iPads/iPods but the MagSafe 2 connection seems to be the issue.  I saw one link that suggested buying an Apple MagSafe 2 power adapter and performing surgery on the power cord (using components provided by the vendor) so that the adapter would run on their back up battery.  I was hoping for a more esthetically pleasing solution. Any suggestions?  Does this product exist and I just missed it? Clearly, if a MagSafe(1) compatible external battery existed I could adapt that using the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter.

    Sparon,
I wouldn’t recommend using an underpowered AC adapter with your MacBook Pro. It sounds as though the best solution would be to get a different laptop bag with a sufficiently large side pocket.

  • Zen Micro Charger - for times when you aren't near a power source for day

Hi All ... now this may seem like a strange request and i'm not sure whether it would be possible but here goes..
As a traveller around the world there is many the time when i am away from a power source for a number of days maybe 5. This means i would either have to carry alot of precharged batteries around or to find another way to charge up my Micro battery/s.
With this in mind i was thinking ... could i use any other method to charge my battery (being as there is no power source available .. including a laptop) So could i build a solar panel of some description ? Could i create a charger using Ordinary Alkaline batterys ... Any suggestions?
I'll probably have to buy 5 or more batteries in the end .. but it was just a thought.
Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.

interesting topic, other then camping, i can't see a time, for me at least, where this would be relevant, but a solar charger sounds like an interesting idea none the less. this is the time i bring along my minidisc player that uses AA batteries of which i have an infinite supply :smileyvery-happy: Other then that, i have this tire inflater that has a built in recharable 2v battery. the nice thing about it is it has a cigarette lighter type DC jack on it. i haven't tried it to charge but i'm sure if you got a DC - USB charger it could work (on a camping type expedition that is, you wouldn't want to drag it onto a train)
which brings me to another point, why is is that most portable players have to use some proprietary battery format? i know that SIZE is prolly the *biggest* reason but i just don't understand why you can't build a small player that runs on something standard like AA or AAAs. i don't mind having an extra battery around but at $40 or so per battery, there ain't no way i'm buying like 5 or 6 batteries. sheesh!

  • Where can I get an additional power source for my MacBook Pro?

I am travelling to Europe next week and will be travelling on the road quite often. I would like to get some work done during that time. My laptop battery will inevitably run out of power during that time and I would like to carry an additional power source with me so I can get some extra juice when I am nowhere near an outlet.
I have the latest MacBook Pro where the battery is not removable.
Where can I get an additional power source for my MacBook Pro? I don't mind if it is a 3rd party product.

you could get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-XP18000-Universal-External-Netbooks/dp/B002K8M9H C
it's about the same cost as an extra battery used to be. there's a range of similiar products at Amazon, i'd check reviews.

  • I'm travelling and trying to back up my new iPhone to iCloud. I have sufficient storage, am connected to wifi and it's plugged into a power source and yet it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong?

I'm travelling and trying to back up my new iPhone to iCloud. I have sufficient storage, am connected to wifi and it's plugged into a power source and yet it doesn't seem to work at all. I'm currently in India. Could that be the cause or can anyone suggest any reason why this wouldn't work?

"gets stuck" - are there any error messages?
If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test:   Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

  • Suggestions for disks from Power Mac G4 Tower?

    Hello fellow Mac users,
I still have the complete disk set for my old Power Mac G4 desktop system (it died and I've moved on to two MacBook Pros). Any suggestions for what I should do with them?
    Thanks for the advice

Suggest you join LEM-Swap for buying & selling Mac stuff. http://groups.google.com/group/lemswap After you join, post a FS (For Sale). Be specific about what model G4 they came with, because they may only work with that model.

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • Data source for this data connection isn't registered for Power BI

Hi, I am getting this error when I set Schedule Data Refresh to refresh data from db.  How do I register my connection to the data source?  Is this a fix on SQL server or Power BI?

    Thanks for your help.

I'm running into the same issue, I did configure the Gateway and then the data source in Power Bi.
When I go to the Power BI Admin Center and click on "Test Connection" it seems to be working. But when I refresh the data from Power BI it doesn't work. Now if I edit the spreadsheet in excel and refresh the data in PowerPivot then it works. So
not sure why the solution doesn't refresh from the automated service in Power BI without this useless error.
    Thanks

Also further information I have found so far is that the Gateway is receiving the requests for the refresh and it shows the message below, so the data source is found and communication seems to be happening from server to client and back, not sure why server

  • What does Apple mean by "For best battery performance, leave your device connected to a power source until the restore is complete."

I just recently returned an IPad air and exchanged it for another. I first set up this new one as a new IPad but then deleted all content and settings right away (since I wasn't getting the progress I had made in apps and games) in order to restore it from my previous IPad Air. I then checked after on how to backup via icloud and saw this line under the subtitle of how to restore from a backup, "For best battery performance, leave your device connected to a power source until the restore is complete." What does Apple mean by "for best battery performance"? Im just a bit worried of issues.
p.s. And yes I did have it connected to the power. And the ios is the default ios for new IPad Airs.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It only means you should restore whilst it is connected to a power supply, so that your battery doesn't go flat during the process.

  • Any expericences about Hive/Hbase as data source for Power BI?

Any real life experiences about fetching and automatically refreshing data from HDInsight for Power BI?
    Kenny_I

    Hi Kenny,
I've used HDInsight with Power BI on a handful of prototypes/PoCs where HIVE has been used to condense very high grain data or unstructured data into something a lot more manageable. As you may already know, the HIVE tables are just projected metadata
on top of folders which contain the data across one or more files, or subfolders of files (i.e. partitions). Initially I had hoped for Power Query's 'From Microsoft Azure HDInsight' data source to be able to pull data from HDInsight by generating HIVE queries
(HQL), but instead it hits the underlying HDFS (which is implemented as Azure blob storage) and pulls data directly from the files. As a result, it gives pretty much the same experience/functionality as using the 'From Microsoft Azure Blob Storage' data source.
One thing I found out the hard way is that if data is stored in HIVE tables that use an optimised file format such as ORC, Power Query is unable to pull the actual data out of these files (it doesn't know how to read their contents). You'll need to write some
HQL that will output the data in a plain text format such as CSV or TSV to be able to pull it in via Power Query. In some scenarios I have gotten around this by using Sqoop or SSIS to load the data into a Microsoft Azure SQL Database and then pulling that
data into Power Query/Power Pivot, but realise that this may not always be feasible.
There is the Microsoft Hive ODBC Driver to pull data from HDInsight/Hadoop via HIVE tables on a local machine, but I've not yet found a streamlined way to get workbooks in Power BI to pull data from HDInsight/Hadoop via HIVE.
I'd be interested to learn about other experiences with HDInsight and Power BI too.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the Data Management Gateway was needed in all cases due to the use of Power Query.
    Regards,
    Michael Amadi

To transfer your current hard drive I like the applications Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. They make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive. http://www.bombich.com/index.html or http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
