Suggestions for Smart Playlists

Recently, I purchased an iPod Classic. As a Mac user for 2 years, I have experienced the advantages of using a Mac-based computers and its OS itself. Therefore, I trust Apple brand in whichever products they are selling and recommends to my customers, friends and relatives. However, when I was trying out the features of iTunes, like the Smart Playlist, I realised certain flaws to it.
When I was setting the rules for which type of songs to be placed into the playlist, for example, I only want Trance music only, but not the podcasts. However, no matter how I set the rules, it shows the other genres of music like Dance in the playlist, furthermore, the podcasts still shows up.
I would like to suggest to place an additional function to the Smart Playlist by adding a "DO NOT" function. For example, DO NOT place any songs like podcasts or Dance music. This way, it makes it easier for heavy users like me to place songs without thinking much of how to set the appropriate rules to it. Thank you.

• Temporary Fix for Smart Playlist order bug

I stumbled across a Smart Playlist that was keeping the correct order and discovered why. It was a Smart Playlist that contained 2 other Smart Playlists. The original Smart Playlists didn't keep their order but the new one that combined them did. So I experimented on a few other Smart Playlists by making new Smart Playlists that only contained another Smart Playlist. And it works. I've also been able to keep Live Updating enabled.
Hopefully this will help everyone who reads this get by until Apple fixes this bug, which they seem to reintroduce about once a year.

I'm sorry but none of these suggested fixes work, including sort before sync, media kind as music, not referring to other smart playlists, turning live update off, setting Play Order; nothing worked. Plus, on large smart playlists (2000+ songs), not only were they not ordered correctly but the phone (4S no less) pauses 20 seconds to think every time you go into the playlist after a sync.
In fact the only "fix" for me was Apple's last suggestion in their KB article on the subject of smart playlists not syncing in order: in iTunes select my smart playlist, then select all, then make a new playlist (using I believe Edit/New Playlist) based on that selection (which is now not smart), order as needed and sync. It works great but of course the list is now is non-self-updating and I have to manually update it when I add new songs. Not a big deal but still a pain.
For me, order is critical only on my Recently Added playlist, so I went manual with that one. The others I tend to shuffle so the lack of ordering isn't as big of a deal.

• Are movie ratings available for smart playlists

I'm trying to make a playlist of movies by rating (not personal stars but G PG PG-13 etc...) I can't seem to find a column to filter on. Where is this meta data available?

Sorry, but that information is not directly available to use in a Smart Playlist. You could put the rating in the Comments field which would make it available for filtering in a Smart Playlist.
Regards.

• Workround for Smart Playlist bug in iTunes 6.0.5

I'm using iTunes 6.0.5 on MacOS 10.2.8 (hence I can't upgrade iTunes to a later version 'cos my OS is too old).
When I try to use Smart Playlists, the program closes down whenever I create a Playlist featuring a date-type condition (like "Last Played") and change from "is" to something else (like "is not in the last" ... ). This seems to be a bug common whenever iTunes 6.0.5 is used on MacOS 10.2.8.
Is there any work-around for this problem? (The computing administrator here is unlikely to allow me to upgrade the OS just so that I can play music more conveniently!) If it were possible to make copies of Smart Playlists, then I might be able to adjust the standard "Recently Played".
Thanks (hopefully!) in advance,
Martyn

• Suggestion for new playlist criteria

I don't know if any iTunes developers are active on these forums (should that be "fora", as in "criterium/criteria"?), but if they are, I would find the addition of options "Artwork is True/False" and "Audiobook is True/False" tremendously useful as playlist criteria in iTunes.
Also, the addition of "Grouping" as an additional option under "Music" in the iPod firmware would be very useful too, as having it only in iTunes is not tremendously useful.
Many thanks,

Welcome to discussions, Martin!
This is a user-to-user forum.
Can't help on the artwork or grouping stuff, but you can have a smart playlist with "Genre does not contain Audiobooks"

• Multiple criteria for Smart Playlists

When I want to make a Smart Playlist with multiple criteria, such as a SP for my Classical and Jazz songs only, I select genre, then type in Classical, following that I click the "+" button next to that and put Jazz as my Genre. I click save, then I get a dialogue box that tells me about non-matching items. Is a multi criteria SP even possible or am I just not doing it right?

Logically, that makes sense, of course (it's not your "entire" lib, it's just everything except Harry)
There might be another way, but here's how I would do what you want:
I'd create a new folder and place two SPs in it, one for classical and one for Jazz. Then I'd create a third one that consists of "Playlist Classical" and "Playlist Jazz".
It sounds sloppy, but you could use that single folder for any playlist you wanted to use in this way, keeping the combination SPs out in the straight listing.
Hope that helps

• Looking for Smart Playlist Documentation for iTunes Match (iCloud), and iOS

With iTunes Match I don't understand exactly how Smart Playlist's are suppose to work with iTunes Match (iCloud) and my iOS devices. I am looking for some official (possibly draft) documentation.

Is this a general rant or do you have a specific question ?

• Suggestion for improving playlist functionality

Aside from reinstating the ability to open playlists in separate windows I'd like to see iTunes support per playlists default playback settings that would be set at the point a playlist is selected. These settings would include whether shuffle and crossfade was on and which particular EQ setting should be used for that playlist. For example I have a podcast only playlist and for that I always want shuffle and crossfade off and the EQ to be the Spoken Word preset. For music playlists I'm likely to want shuffle and crossfade on with the EQ set off.

• ITunes 9.1, Still no fix for Smart playlist?

So, I downloaded the latest version which is 9.1 but my smart play list still is messed up. Recently added songs are at the bottom when it should be at the top.

Did you add a Date-Added column to the playlist and right-click the playlist and select Copy to Play Order when it's properly sorted the way you wanted?
If not, that's your problem, not iTunes ... my "New Editions" Playlist is sorted the same way and it works perfectly.

• Workaround for iPhone smart playlist bug

There is a bug (do a search for smart playlist in this forum) with smart playlists not displaying the correct songs on the iPhone.
I just tried something that seems to have worked...
I have a playlist in iTunes called "Recently Added" which I want to keep synced with my iPhone.
I created a new smart playlist called "Recently Added (iPhone)". The playlist has one rule: "Playlist is Recently Added" with live updating checked.
I now sync this second playlist with the iPhone and all the correct songs show up in it.

Excellent idea Jeff.
Your approach works for the same reason that my original idea works.
The inclusion of another playlist as a condition in a smart playlist, causes the playlist to become "rasterized" or static.
The developers wanted smart playlists to be really smart - instead of copying a static list of songs from the smart playlist to the iPhone/Pod, they simply send the definition of the playlist to the iPhone and let it calculate which songs from it's own library belong on it.
The nice thing about their approach is that the playlists will continue to live update on the Phone in-between syncs - so if you have a playlist called "Last 25 played" it will have the last 25 played songs on your iPhone, instead of the last 25 played songs that you played in iTunes.
The problem of course, is that there's a bug in the way the iPhone calculates these rules (probably related to the porting of code to a new architecture).
So why does this fix work?
Well, my theory is that when you create a smart playlist that references another playlist, iTunes simply calculates the songs that should appear on the smartplaylist and sends a literal list to the iPhone/Pod.
This solves the problem that would be created if you only sync the parent playlist, and not the playlists it references. (IE, if you would want to be able to sync the "25 most played" playlist without also having to sync the "MusicOnly" playlist).

• Smart Playlists Sync from Itunes

Hey all,
Whenever I connect my iphone 4 to my macbook all of the smart playlists automatically sync to my iphone, even though i have "manage music manually" selected under my iphone settings. Anyone know how i stop these playlsits from syncing to my iphone everytime i connect the phone to my macbook. Thanks

With iTunes Match enabled on an iOS device direct syncing of music via USB or Wi Fi is disabled. All music management takes place directly on the iDevice. All supported playlists are uploaded to the cloud and are available on your iDevice in the "Playlists" section."
Some criteria for Smart Playlists that are not supported are any Playlists that reference other playlists, comments, Checked. You may need to experiement a little with the smart playlists to get them just the way you want them in iOS.

• After updating all softwere I am unable to update smart playlist?

I have updated both my itunes and ipod touch to the newest versions. After doing this i am unable to sync my smart playlist and one application that I played for will not work.
ex: my recently played playlist will not update, the songs are added but they go on a random order somewhere were in the middle of the playlist. The beginning of the playlist has not changed regardless of what songs i play or how many times i have updated the ipod, it seems as if it is locked.
What i have tried doing: restarting computer, restarting ipod, restoring ipod, creating new smart playlist, when ipod is attached clicking music in the ipods tab menu and selected only the smart playlist.
Please help!

And for smart playlists that are top 25 type playlists (although I'm not sure why there's a difference, this stuff is all really messed up) try turning off live updating in your smart playlist settings. And post here if that prevents your playlist from updating when play counts change, I don't use that list and I'm curious.

• Media Source Organizer Smart Playlists - won't link up to new hard drive

I recently tranferred all of my tracks to a new hard drive. I updated the PC Music library and it's working fine except for the Smart Playlists. They still refer to the old hardrive. How do I update the location for Smart Playlists?
Thx.

Hi,
If I remember correctly Smart Playlists & Playlists doesn't update itself when the physical music file is moved to another location. It's something like a shortcut that points to a list of songs. Can you create a new smart playlist to see if it is pointing to the correct location?

• Smart Playlists with Implied Criteria

Discovered a cool feature in iTunes last night. The basic idea is that when you rate a track [1-5 stars], a "ghost" rating appears for the whole album that contains that track. You can then create a smart playlist which queries for that "implied criteria." So you can, for example, create a smart playlist that includes all music you have not yet heard AND that does not include any tracks that belong to any album that has another track that received a low rating.
Wrote a little blog post about this:
http://birdhouse.org/blog/2014/02/03/how-to-create-itunes-smart-playlists-with-i mplied-criteria/

So I went through technical support because I had this exactly some problem. Smart playlist shows up in iTunes on my iMAC, as well as via Apple TV (both via iCloud and Home Sharing options.) It also fully populates those smart playlists.
For my pre-existing Smart Playlists (that only have criteria for the GROUPING field) show up, have songs, but are quite a few songs short. I then created a brand new play list with brand new tracks... and its empty on iPhone 4S and iPAD2. Apple TV and IMAC are fine.
So technical support provided me with this response: For smart playlists to work on iOS devices, the songs must be downloaded to the device.
My feedback was this: So this is chicken and the egg. You create the playlist to easily locate and download those songs to your device, but you cant because they have to be on your device before they will show in the playlist.
I suppose the only work around is to create the smart playlist w/ your filters. THEN create a regular playlist and copy everything in the SMART Playlist into the regular playlist.
I have not used Apple products for very long... approaching 2 years. I moved everything to Apple. Computers, laptops, portable devices, etc... I have been VERY impressed. HOWEVER, this makes the point of Smart Playlists completely manual when it comes to your iOS device.
I will for sure be launching a compliant to www.apple.com/feedback.
