Suggestions for the Zen Mi

I would like to thank Creative for creating the Zen Micro as I am enjoying it immensely. Course most of that is due to this being my first mp3 player but its still a pretty good player that gets a lot of questions from people who see it. They seem to really like it after I show it to them. (maybe I should be paid an advertising fee =?)
But there are some things that do need some improvement.
Software Suggestions:
SW Suggestion
Allow people to sort songs by folder structure. I did see this suggestion somewhere in another thread but I really can't stress this feature enough. I'm just not impressed by how you can pick the songs in the Micro currently.
SW Suggestion 2
List the Artist with the Album name, I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't remember all the album names. Though I have to say I'm getting really better at it now. Of course, I'd also recommend to marquee the text since it will no doubt be long. It may seem odd since its under the Album sort, but I'd list the Artist then the Album name that way all your (insert Artist) is grouped together. To me that is much easier to find something I want than an alphabetical list of albums I can't always remember.
SW Suggestion 3
Add the time to the player - Saw a petition for this, I'll sign it.
SW Suggestion 4
Re-design the install shield for your software. PLEASE! I hate it. I don't need "an experience" while installing software. I got a computer that is pretty healthy on horsepower (not the best, but pretty good) and your software locked up 4 times when trying to install... 4 TIMES! That's bad! I even disabled my anti-virus every try and it still had problems. And no, the player was not plugged in when it was being installed - i try to keep the variables to a minimum. Software install should be quick and painless - when I did get it to work it took 20-30min to install Media Source. My 3D based games were by far faster.
SW Suggestion 5
Add a feature to disable the Lock Reminder or whatever you call it. I like to keep my player in my pocket and even though I wrap it in the case to help desensitize the touch pad (and to prevent scratches) I can only imagine how many times I trip off "Player is locked". (forgot the actual message) I don't know if it sucks any battery power but I sure don't seem to get good battery life if I have the player in my pocket. Its about a 2-3hr difference if I keep the player by itself with minimal touching.
SW Suggestion 6
This might actually be possible, but I don't have the player in front of me at the moment. Queue up Playlists (PL). For example I may want to play PL# and PL#3 now, PL#2 and PL# afterwards and then PL#, 2 and 3 tonight.
Hardware Suggestions:
HW Suggestion
The earbuds that came with the player are the first earbuds I have ever broken and I been using earbuds since middle school. I didn't even do anything that 'should' of caused this. I did pull but not that hard, mostly just to untangle the wires. So perhaps you can make them more sturdy...
HW Suggestion 2
Some of the other pieces don't seem as sturdy either. I already see a crack developing on the belt clip holder piece and i only used it once - granted it was on the plane but I still didn't think I did anything that could of caused it. (unless bending my leg with it in my pocket did the trick)
HW Suggestion 3
Player just plain looks cool, buut I think my Black player would look even better if it was all black instead of two-toned. But I do have to admit, by itself I do like the white plastic you used - it is pretty slick. Be even slicker in black tho! =P

SW Suggestion

This is supported (someone correct me if I'm wrong) in the v2 firmware. However, the version 2.x firmware has it's own problems, so I can't recommend it to everyone.
SW Suggestion 2

Well, as you've already mentioned, the artist sort already sorts first by artist, and then (on the next level) by album. It looks like you already have a solution that works, so I'm not sure why Creative needs to change anything.
SW Suggestion 3
Add the time to the player - Saw a petition for this, I'll sign it.
It's there, it just doesn't show up on the Now Playing screen. If you would like to see the time instead of what's now playing, you can always (after your music has started) keep clicking back until you reach the main menu, and then go to Extras -> Date and Time. This will show the date and time screen while your music is playing.
SW Suggestion 4

Yes, yes, and yes! The main Install Shield program on the CD is a disaster area. I've had much better luck installing just the jukebox drivers by themselves (jb3_drv.exe) and then the updated Micro Explorer found here on the Creative website.
SW Suggestion 5

You desperately need to upgrade to firmware version .0.03! Not only does it fix this, but it fixes other charging issues as well.

No, it doesn't currently do this, but it's a cool idea.

  • Data Recovery Software for the Zen Vision M

Data Recovery Software for the Zen Vision M:
Has anyone had any success recovering lost sound files from a Vision M, with software, physical repair services, or otherwise? Does anyone claim to be able to recover information from these devices?
The data recovery programs I have tried fail to recognize the dri've, since it doesn't show up in list of dri'ves for some reason (Is there a way to make this show up?). Any suggestions/ recommendations would be greatly appreciated as I lost over a year of recordings after an unexpected forced reformatting. How would one even go about finding someone for this job?
    Thanks, GW

Haven't really tried the data recovery so I would like to know more about this one too.

  • Windows 7 64 bit driver for the Zen Vision M?

    - Where EXACTLY can I find the Windows 7 64-bit driver for the Zen Vision M? My new computer came with it installed in Windows Media Player 2, but the driver became corrupt. I can't seem to find that driver on the Creative or Microsoft download websites. Please Help!

The driver is nati've to Windows. Creative does not write the MTP driver. I would suggest re-install WMP2 or contact Microsoft for advice if it is corrupt. As for software to use the player on a 64 Win 7system? there is nothing for the Vision M. You may want to read this page? http://support.creative.com/KB/showarticle.aspx?sid=605&h=3

  • Arm strap for the Zen Mic

I'd like to take my Micro to the gym, but I need an arm strap because I'm afraid of bumping the unit with a weight if I were to clip it to my waist.
Could anyone recommend a good arm band/strap that will fit the player snugly? Anything specifically made for the zen micro (5gb) would be a plus.
    Thanks!
p.s. I won't be able to check this board too often. If you have a suggestion and would be so kind, please e-mail me at [email protected]][email protected]. Thanks again.

    I got one of these
    http://www.tunebelt.com/ab4
which is pretty good and very affordable. Good service from them as well!
As it says it was intended for ipodmini but also fits the Zen Micro.

  • External Charger For the Zen Mic

will there be an external charger for the Zen Micro? So you can always have a juiced up battery ready and willing to go? =)

I think it's a huge inefficiency to require that the player be out of commission during the battery charging.
An optional external charger would remedy this problem and would make having a second battery the seamless way to have constant connectivity.
As it stands, you can't use the player for 3+ hours while it's charging.
These proprietary batteries that are only chargeable via Creative products are confining and non-user-friendly.
An optional external charger would make this player much more usable.
    PS - otherwise - I LOVE IT!!!

  • Firmware Maddness for the Zen Mic

Is it just me or is this firmware business out of control for the Zen Micro?
Having a .0 series and a 2.0 series at the same time is creating way too much confusion!
Aren't MP3 players supposed to be replacing portable CD Players and Cassette Players? Well the coolness factor is there, but the user experience has some serious room for improvment.
The common person would have no clue what the heck to do with all these firmware downloads. Even the descriptions of the firmware would be very confusing for most people getting into MP3 players for the first time. I am very happy with my Zen Micro and am using Windows Media Player as my Music Manager without any problems. I guess I am supposed to wait for the new 2..02 beta to get "un-betad" instead of downloading the new .02.05 but that's just a guess at this point. There are a ton of MP3 players out there with more features and a lower price than iPods, but they still don't come close to outselling it. That's because its the ease of use, not necessarily the features that separates iPods from the rest of the pack. Hey Creative, dummy these things down and watch your sales go up! You will reach a whole new set of customers if you do!

I agree, I'd like to see creatives mp3 players and napsters service to be a profitiable and long-lasting business because I think this way of finding and listening to music is wonderful.. but the firmware updates/formatting the dri've/and all this other technical stuff is a little bit much for the average person to deal with. Also the newest non-MTP version has a bunch of new fixes which the newest MTP version apparently doesn't even have but they both came out the same day or so? I dont understand that.

  • How long is the warranty for the Zen Mic

Can anyone tell me how long the warranty is for the Zen Micro? Thanks!

    SSR,
The year/90 days warranty is our standard for PDE devices to my knowledge. It does happen to be the warranty in the US; however some countries have laws requiring different warranty lengths. We don't do any warranties on current PDE products that are less than this to my knowledge.

  • Any universal remotes for the zen tou

Looks like Creative won't budge on bringing back the FM wired remote or any new remotes for the Zen Touch. Pity- I think they would still make a profit. So does anyone else make wired remotes suitable for use with the Zen Touch 20GB?

I listen to music on my iphone all the time.
It is your position that anyone who does not agree with you does not listen to music?
    Really?
    What a leap.

  • Cases for the Zen Xtra and which online servi

I just bought a Zen Xtra 30 GB and would like to get some safe way of carrying it when I jog. Either a fanny pack or arm band. Has anyone seen these. If so where? Also what online services work with this device. I saw Napster works directly with the micro.

I've not seen either specifically for the Zen, but I'm sure you can get a generic belt based case from something like a camera shop. Or use a case e.g. Vaja, that has a belt connector.
Currently the Xtra will support any service that uses normal WMA DRM (or of course the very few that use MP3). It won't support PlayForSure (and Janus DRM) yet, but a new firmware is supposed to bring this. See the FAQ.

  • Power input specs for the zen x

i need to know the power input specs for the zen xtra, since i need to buy a new charger ASAP. Can anyone help me?

You might want to ask this in the MacBook Pro forums… you're in the MacBook forums.

  • What was the last firmware version for the Zen Micro before M

I would like to know what was the last firmware version for the Zen Micro before the MTP firmware?
Please make sure you are 00% on this.
    Thankyou.

I think it does, but I'm not sure; since I wanted MTP, I only used .x firmware long enough to save the original Creative test files (with MediaSource, not ZMME) before upgrading to 2.x. And yes, I had to li've with 2..02's shorter battery life until 2.20.05 came out.
May I ask why you want to go back to .x firmware? The only thing that will get you is the ability to use it with Win98SE/2000/Me--but only if you can install Creative drivers on every PC you use it with. MTP requires WinXP SP or 2 and WMP 0, but doesn't need any Creative software at all to work. (Microsoft has made an MTP driver for Win98SE/2000/Me, but it requires customization and may not be supported by other software. I'm tinkering a bit with the customization part right now.)
There are other pitfalls in changing Micro firmware families, in either direction--you'll lose all the files on your Micro, you'll have to install a different ZMME (and I've heard non-MTP ZMME isn't quite as full-featured as MTP ZMME), and you'll need a new plug-in for MediaSource to work.
