Suggestions in the Google

My auto-complete and suggestions in the Google search box in Safari
does not work-
In Minefield (Firefox) I do not have that problem.
Can anyone tell me how to change the settings in Safari to have Google
give suggestions?
Safari does give me a down arrow for recent searches, which Minefield
( Firefox) does not.

There's a small 'preferences' link to the right of the text box on Google's page. You should see this option towards the bottom:

I use the google search bar for everything and since downloading FF4 i can not select any of the suggestions in the google drop down menu.
I have tried to select one of the suggestions that google give me for my search but FF it wont let me. I have type everything out in full. I hate FF4 it is rubbish. I loved firefox before this one came out but now I am seriously thinking of going over to google chrome.

Many thanks for the prompt reply, ideato.
One of the reasons I abandoned Chrome in favour of Firefox was due to the "black band of doom" that appears on the top of the Google page - so setting up my homepage to google.co.uk just puts that back in the ugly spotlight.
I was, though, pleasantly surprised to see a Google search bar on the Mozilla Firefox Start Page (without the black band and Google options that I am just not interested in) but bitterly disappointed that it is Google.fr (due to my ISP being French).
I shall learn to live with Yahoo (or worse case scenario, Bing!)

  • How do you turn off the suggestions form the google search bar?

How do you turn off the suggestions form the google search bar? the drop down boxes are really starting to annoy me!

You can't turn off the suggestions in Safari, though you may be able to do that if you install Glims, which also offers some additional options that aren't available directly in Safari.
Quit Safari before you install it, then restart and go to Preferences>Glims to setup your options.
As for drop-down boxes, what exactly are you referring to?

  • Why does my cursor keep disappearing in the Google search bar?

When using FF or Google Chrome, I've noticed that my cursor keeps disappearing when using the Google search bar. I've tried using all the about:config tips, I've downgraded to earlier versions, I've pressed F7, I've unchecked the "hide cursor while typing" option in my mouse properties, I've checked for driver updates, I've tried disabling all add-ons and plug-ins, and I've checked another computer in our home as well. Same thing there. This seems to have become a problem in the last few days. IE seems unaffected by it. Just FF and Chrome.

No sir, there are no other tabs open, when it happens. For now, I've found a workaround, and I invite you to test it yourself.
I've been working on this problem all day. I've noticed that the cursor blinks very slowly in the Google search bar. If you press a key while the cursor is blinking "off", it will stay off until you let go of what key you're pressing. Conversely, if you press a key while the cursor is blinking "on", the cursor will remain visible as you type.
In IE, the cursor blinks much more rapidly, and blinks more "on" than "off." As a result the cursor remains on, no matter what you type or when, or what key you press, including the spacebar. This is not the case in FF or Chrome.
It was suggested in the Google forums that disabling "autocomplete" has helped with this problem. I followed the instructions and successfully disabled the "auto-complete" feature on Google. When I did that, I immediately noticed that the cursor blink speed doubled, like what I'm used to seeing. Further, no matter what I did, the cursor did NOT disappear anymore.
The link for google with autocomplete disabled is http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0
Go there and see if you notice a difference in the blink speed of the cursor. On my computer, the difference is drastic. While I do enjoy "auto-complete" and will miss this feature, I generally don't rely on it, and much prefer a consistent cursor.
I greatly look forward to your feedback on this. If you figure out a way to have Google work normally without this workaround, I will be forever in your debt.

  • The google suggestions when I type in the search box are not clickable anymore since I installed Firefox 4. Why could that be?

It used to be when I typed in the Google search field at the top of the screen, a list of suggestions would appear. When the suggestion matched my search I would stop typing and click on it. Then the search would start. After installing Firefox 4 the suggestions still show up but nothing happens when I click on them. I have to complete entering it and then click on the search button. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?<br/> ''A troubleshooting mode.''<br />
1.You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut. <br />
    2. Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut to open it again.''

Nope. You can always reverse that if you choose.

  • I type into the Google box & when the suggestions appear in the drop-down they don't go into the box when I click on any of them

On 3.6 if I start typing in the Google search box & get a drop-down list of suggestions & click on one of them that item appears in the box. With the 4.0 beta when I click on it the list goes away leaving whatever I typed in the box. Why?

Any more on this? I've downloaded the latest version & still have the same problem with it. Is this a glitch on Firefox or something between Google & of Firefox. Just to check I reloaded 3.6 & checked. Google search works fine just like it used to. Why does Mozilla seem to be ignoring this? I don't think I'm alone on this, at least not according to this forum.

Why can I no longer, after having downloaded Lion, write accents and other diacriticals when in the Google, Yahoo, FaceBook, or even here in this post? The new method for getting at the "option" symbols works fine in other places like spotlight, but now even the older "option+letter" doesn't work in most places.

Chrome doesn't support the new accent/diacritics/macron chooser. I'm not sure about other browsers such as Firefox. You can use the old Option+letter combination that Doug suggested. Hopefully updates will solve these little incompatibilities shortly.

I added a personna 6/25/10, wanted to shorten the google navigation & search bars to see it but can't. Have re-installed the google tool bar, have selected the firefox tool bar version as my default and can then change the width but when one box gets shorter the other gets longer still filling the width of the screen. Customize tool bar doesn't give any options to shorten the tool bar width, I'm at a total loss. Would love suggestions if you've successfully fixed this.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

The location bar and search bar have a flex property and take all available space.
You can only change the relative size of both with that resizer between the two bars.
You can only do that by adding a lot of Space elements in the View > Toolbars > Customize window.
You can set a fixed width by setting the min-width and max-width to the same value.
Add code to [http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css userChrome.css] below the @namespace line.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_configuration#How_to_edit_configuration_files
    <pre><nowiki>@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */
    #urlbar-container {max-width:400px!important; min-width:400px!important;}
    #search-container {max-width:200px!important; min-width:200px!important;}
    </nowiki></pre>
You can chose your own values as long as the min-width and max-width for each bar have the same value.

  • How to stop the suggestions in the search

I hate the suggestions in the search in 4! How do you turn it off? all of the suggestions are always 100% wrong and many times not even close! Please help! thank you.

The OP is referring to the Google search box suggestions (they mentioned in another post).
Tibetan, there's no way to turn that off. The Google preferences only apply to the Google website, not Safari. (Yes I know you don't want to hear this, but them's the facts )
I don't know about Safari 4, but if - as you say - the OP IS referring to the Google search bar suggestions then there is a way to turn that off, at least for me in 3.2.3 there is and I assume it's a Google thing not a Safari thing (?)
If you click on Preferences next to the search box on the Google home page and scroll to near the bottom of the page you will find a button choice about Query Suggestions.
Just click the "Do not provide..." button and the annoying suggestions in Google will disappear.

  • How do I permanently disable search history in the Google search bar?

In Firefox 3.6, left-clicking the drop-down arrow by the Google icon, then selecting "Manage Search Engines..." only allows you to disable Search Suggestions. Right-clicking the search bar only allows me to "Clear Search History".
How do I PERMANENTLY disable search history when I type in the Google search bar?

Disabling "Remember search AND form history" is not the correct solution in my case, what I need is Firefox to offer to split the option and disable "Search Bar History" while keeping "Form History" enabled.
    How can I do that?
