Suggestions on extending wifi coverage across a street

Thanks, Ferdinand, I'll look into that!

We have an office and warehouse across the street from our main building. It is currently connected to our building via an old underground connection that goes out pretty much every time the weather is bad. Running another physical line is not an option at this time. There are currently only 2 users in that building - one that only needs email access and occasional web browsing capability. The other user does not stay at that station and only uses it maybe once or twice a month. That user needs to be able to access our corporate network via our internal Citrix client.Currently the underground line is run into a router that feeds into a switch that distributes to those two systems.Across the street at our main building there is a room with a large window that offers a clear line of sight to the large window of office in question across...

  • Need to extend WiFi coverage - got WAP4400n

    Hi
We have extended the office and need to increase the wireless coverage currently provided by a WAP4400n.
Is there a N repeater/range extender we can use?
    TIA
    Antony

Note that you can also simplify this process by renaming the xfinity network to the same name as your existing network.  Here are the steps on how to do this (from this website http://forums.comcast.com/t5/Home-Networking-Router-WiFi/Can-i-change-my-wifi-na me-and-password/td-p/1258033
Log into the router at http://10.0.01 (assuming it is using the default address).  The default userid is "admin", the default password is "password".
You should be presented with a wizard setup as described on page 8 in your manual.
If you are NOT presented with the wizard, you will have to go make the changes directly...
Go to Gateway -> Connection -> WiFi and press the EDIT button next to your wireless network.
Change the Network Name (SSID) and the Network Password to whatever you desire and then press the SAVE SETTINGS button.
To change the login password (used in #1 above), go to Troubleshooting -> Change Password, provide the Current Password, the New Password, and Re-enter New Password and press theSAVE button.

  • Need to extend/enhance WiFi coverage

Looking to see if there is something I can do to extend/enhance the WiFi coverage in my house from the Actiontect router.

Increasing Wireless Range - By CharlesH
There is a lot you can do to increase the range of your wireless router. Please note, not everything is going to work.  If you have brick walls, a couple of frigerators and a big screen TV near the router, this will kill the potential range of your router.  Lastly, keep in mind of other devices that could interfere with your router.  Wireless A/B/G routers operate at 2.4 Gigahertz, and so do a lot of cordless phones!  It is suggested to change the wireless channel on the router first just to make sure you're avoiding any possible interference on the first few channels.
Location, location, location.  It is known that the best location of the router is in the middle and highest part of your house. Typically, the wi-fi signal travels like the shape of an umbrella. Depending on how you were installed, it may be hard to change the location of your router.  If you are using a coax or MOCA connection, you can connect your wireless router to any existing (and working) coax outlets or use a splitter in conjunction with an existing coax run. So simply changing the location of the router may increase range in your home or business.
Antennas? You can increase the range cheaply by simply purchasing a new antenna.  There is a good review of the different types of antennas here: http://www.radiolabs.com/Articles/wifi-antenna.html
For the most part you will see omni-directional & directional antennas in the store. In normal circumstances, you can usually gain 25 feet ~ 75 feet, or even more depending on the antenna.
If antennas still are not working for you, the next device to try is a "wireless repeater".  You will see these labeled as range extenders or range expanders. They can help extend the range of any wireless device in the house and are very easy to configure.
Lastly, the last way to get a signal to the other side of the house is using a wall plugged extender kit.  They will take the Ethernet signal and send it through your powerline to another outlet.  Then from there you could hook up an access point, a router, a computer, you name it.  This is the best solution when you have brick walls and a lot of wireless interference.

  • How do I setup my Airport Extreme so that I can extend the coverage of my existing AT&T wifi network?

How do I setup my Airport Extreme so that I can extend the coverage of my existing AT&T wifi network?

Start by establishing a permanent fixed Ethernet cable connection from one of the available LAN <-> ports on the ATT modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
Ethernet cabling can be run up to 300+ feet or 100 meters, so you should be able to locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it will be needed to provide more wireless signal coverage.
Configure the AirPort Extreme to "create" a wireless network using exactly the same wireless network name, same wireless security setting, and same wireless network password that the ATT wireless is using.
The final step is to insure that the AirPort Extreme is configured to operate in Bridge Mode, so it will work correctly with the ATT modem/router.
If you need more specific steps, we need to know what operating system you are using on your Mac or PC. If you have a Mac and do not know which operating system it is using.....click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then click About This Mac, and post back with the OS X version number that you see there.

  • Extending wifi with airport express and time capsule

    Hi All
I'm new to macs and moving over in a big way!
I started with a time capsule and all was fine apart from the coverage in the house.
It seemed easy to extend the wifi so purchased an AE 802.11n and extended the network.
It does extend and I can connect to the internet but the network is now really really slow and the time capsule backup wont work.
    connection is :
Ethernet modem - Airport express ( as its close to my audio equipment ) - extended WIFI conection via 802.11n.
Any suggestions? why is it so slow?
Im at 7.3.1 firmware on both AE and time capsule and the Macbook pro is at 10.5.3.
    Any suggestions?

I've managed to change the 5gHz of ther Airport Express that's extending the network.
As mentioned, main AE is on channel 48, and I now have the 2nd AE on channel 36 - which means my TV can now see the network. Also tested speed via my mavbook air on the same 5gHz network as it all seems OK (A while ago I spotted my Time Capsule was on the same channel 48 as main AE and throughput was abysmal! Bad enough to make me reset the TC to factory defaults and setup again - which is when the TC got channel 120).
Anyway, the fix... I changed the 2nd AE to create a wireless network (instead of extend), and manually set the channel to 36. I then set it back to extend, and it seems to have kept channel 36.

  • Extending Wireless Coverage; What's wrong with this picture?

I would like to extend the coverage of my home WiFi network. I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n+Gigabit Ethernet as my central router which connects to my cable modem.
Unfortunately I don't have a couple of Airport Express gadgets handy to extend my Airport/WiFi coverage. My house/etc is very long and narrow, so one Airport is not going to cover everything.
I do have a couple of other WiFi routers that should be able to function as WiFi access points to extend Internet WiFi access to my Office and Winery; a NetGear and a SMC 2804WBRP-G.
It seems that I should be able to set these two gadgets up two different ways that should work
    to extend my WiFi coverage.
    1) I should be able to connect one of these routers WAN port via ethernet to my Airport router (which routes/DHCP/manages the subnet 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0) and have it route/ DHCP/ manage a separate subnet 192.168.2.1/255.255.255.0) Each WLAN would route a separate subnet, and use DHCP to assign addresses to computers that appear on their subnet, and route Internet traffic back to the main AirportEx router. But this doesn't seem to work.
    2) I should be able to disable DHCP on the secondary router, and only have the Airport hand out IP addresses. I should be able to disable routing, connect the Airport to the second router through one of the second routers LAN Ethernet ports, and have one subnet that covers all my local Ethernet and WiFi networks. But this doesn't seem to work either! Perhaps disabling routing on the second router isn't even necessary?
    Any Ideas? Thanks, Jim!

I should be able to disable routing, connect the Airport to the second router through one of the second routers LAN Ethernet ports, and have one subnet that covers all my local Ethernet and WiFi networks.
That certainly should work. Once the DHCP service is disabled on the router, you should be able to connect ANY of the router's Ethernet ports to one of the LAN ports on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Once configured this way, that router should be essentially a wireless bridge. Of course not all routers actually support this ability.
What happens when you try this?

  • Extending my desktop across 2 (DVI) displays from 15" MacBook Pro Retina

Hi. I bought a new 15" MacBook Pro Retina a few days ago and am trying to connect 2 Dell displays with a view to extending my desktop across them both. At the Apple shop I was told I simply needed to buy 2 Thunderbolt to DVI converters (my 2 displays both have DVI out) and hook them up... Not true. If I try this my desktop only extended across 1 display. The other display isn't even picked up by my MacBook Pro.
So does anyone out there know how I connect 2 DVI displays to my MacBook Pro without buying a Matrox Dual Link? If I bought an HDMI to DVI converter cable and connected one display via the HDMI port, and the other display via the thunderbolt port, would this work?

May not be an upgrade issue ..
You have a fast processor. and 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient.  (The processor cannot be replaced)
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow the system down.
If your Mac seems to running slower, try the suggestions here > Mac troubleshooting: What to do when your computer is too slow | Macworld
If you have not done so, especially with school files stored on the hard drive, make sure to back up your important data on a timely basis.  Help here >  Mac Basics: Time Machine
Not a good idea to post the serial number of your Mac on the net. I have asked the moderators to edit that information for you. It has nothing to do with upgrading.

  • Cannot extend wifi from Time Capsule

    Hi all
I have a time capsule (TC) in bridge mode connected to a livebox router. Internet access is fine, wirelessly and wired from the TC. I have disabled the wireless from the livebox router, to keep things simple.
I was hoping to extend the wifi through the house, using 2 airport expresses (AEXS), one as a relay, one as a remote.
I have ticked create wireless network in airport utility, on the TC, and extend wireless network on the AEXS, but cannot get the network propagated from the AEXS. The AEXS's are set to pick up the lower frequency channel from the TC, and I understand that this has a longer range than the 5 GHz band.
I also have broadband running through the mains circuit (we call this homeplug in the UK) but connecting the AEXS to the homeplug ethernet socket does not work either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

Here's how to do what you want with the furthest Express (AX):
You may be able to simply change some settings on the AX, or if that is not possible, you'll need to hold the reset button in on the device until you see the amber light begin to flash more quickly.
I prefer to setup devices by connecting an ethernet cable from the Mac directly to the device...the AX in this case, but you can also configure using wireless only if you prefer.
On the AX, Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons. Your setup should look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your Time Capsule (TC) network
Radio Mode = Probably 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) would be a good choice here, but you could choose 802.11n 5 GHz if all of your devices are capable of connecting to 5 GHz.
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your TC
Wireless Password = Same setting as your TC network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings. This will provide you with extended wireless coverage and devices will be able to stay on the same wireless network as they move around and connect to the access point with the strongest signal.

  • How can I join Airport Express and 2Wire 3600HGV to extend wifi?

I to join an Airport Express to the wifi network from my AT&T 2Wire 3600HGV router to extend the wifi signal.  I know it is not SOP to link an AX to a non-Apple device like this.  I found instructions ( http://fsdeviations.blogspot.com/2012/09/howto-2wire-3600hgv-airport-extreme.htm l ) for joining an Airport Extreme to the 3600HGV.  Has anyone used this or a similar approach with the Express to join and extend wifi from the 3600HGV?

Connect an Ethernet cable from on of the LAN <--> ports on the back of the 2-Wire modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
Power up the AirPort Express for a few minutes. The indicator light on the front of the device will be slowly blinking amber at this time.
    On your Mac......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Other WiFi Devices tab
    Click on AirPort Express
The setup utility will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then suggest that the AirPort Express will create a new network....which is the correct setting.  The window will look similar to this illustration:
For Network Name......type in the exact name of the wireless network that the 2-Wire is providing......IF.....you want to "extend" the 2-Wire network and make one "big" network.  If you want to have the AirPort Express provide a different network, type in the name of the network that you want the AiPort Express to provide.
For Base Station Name....type in a device name that you want to call the AirPort Express
Password......If you want to extend the 2-Wire network, then type in the exact same password that the 2-Wire network is using.  If you want the AirPort Express to provide a different network, type in a password that you want to use with the network that the AirPort Express will provide
    Verify......verify the Password
Click Next, and the utility will set up everything for you automatically.
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.  That's it. There should be a green light on the front of the AirPort Express at this point.  You can configure other AirPort Express devices in the same manner.

  • My ipad4 locks up when moving outside a wifi coverage

My ipad4 locks up when i move outside a wifi coverage.  Then I have to do the two finger salute to wake it back up.  Any suggestions?

Just fixed this, had exact same issue.
I had my camera connected to the crappy wifi app thing then turned off with it still going and it think it got stuck on the wifi settings.
Just plug in, delete the wifi settings under misc (there like 3 folders on root dir) then turn on wifi, it will wait 30~ seconds then reinsitialise
now i can get into settings and the whole menu
my guess some sort of bug with the wifi setting and when tried to open just crashed itself

  • Extending WiFi of ATT 2Wire modem w/ Apple Express modems?

We have residential / small business internet via AT&T DSL. We run a phone line into a 2Wire (Gateway 2701 HG-B) modem/router (804.11g/n) which provides internet connectivity for an older Mac via an ethernet cable and via wireless for my MacBook (n) when I am w/in 25 - 40 feet of the 2Wire.
But I use my MacBook mostly about 95 feet away in a separate building (ie the garage) and that is where I really need the internet connection. Sometimes I can connect to the 2Wire when I am in the garage but very rarely.
Can I buy an Apple Express Modem and place it half way to the garage as to extend wireless coverage out to the garage? I think even buying 2 Express modems would be cheaper and much easier than running cat 5 cable in this case because of the building obstacles.
Or would another brand of modem be better for this style of daisy-chaining (without the chain!) ?? Someone recommended the Zyxel Adsl2 Gateway 802.11n modem for Daisy-chaining. Should I buy a replacement for the 2Wire modem to be sure this approach will work?
    TIA, Allan

Can I buy an Apple Express Modem and place it half way to the garage as to extend wireless coverage out to the garage?
Sorry, but that won't work as most non-AirPort routers are not WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
Or would another brand of modem be better for this style of daisy-chaining (without the chain!) ??
Any modem that is Ethernet-capable can be used. In this case, you can connect one AirPort directly to this modem by Ethernet, and then, extend it wireless range with another AirPort.

  • Extending video layers across the time line simultaneously

Any one Know how to extend video layers across the time line simultaneously?
I have been working on a Video for a few days and have all the layers I need to make my video but when I came to start creting the clip on the timeline there was no promt asking me how long I want the clip to be. I want to extend all the layers on the clip to 21:10 seconds similtaniously. Ther is about 600 layers in numorous groups and I dont want to have to extend each layer across the time line to 21:10 seconds individualy?
    can any one help?

it is currently lacking the ability to adjust the length using multiple layers at once. However that said, if you are done animating the layer individualy, you can select all layer (or a partial) and convert them to a smart object. That smart object can then be extended in time. Playing in photoshop maybe slower due to the smart object.

  • Phone Line Across The Street Has Branches On It

Whom should I contact to get some branches removed from a Verizon phone line across the street? I don't think it's a hazard, but something will give sooner or later. I'm not a Verizon customer, so I can't easily access anyone online. And it seems all local businesses are Verizon Wireless. Thanks!

Verizon doesn't do tree trimming, so depends on where the tree is at, and who's responsibility it is.  If it's on your property, then you take care of it, if it's on a neighbors property, they take care of it.   Sometimes the city is responsible.   so it depends.

When I leave my house where I have WiFi coverage I want to select what songs I can play when I'm out of coverage. Because I have only 8 gig on my Ipod I can't download everything for offline use. I want to be able to choose what I have available when I'm off line. How can I do that?
