Suggestions sought for first SSD for HD swap on W510

I have never installed an SSD but need to on my W510 so I can get another year or two out of it. Have the i7820QM 1.73 GHz model with 24GB installed. I clone all the partitions with Shadow Protect which seems fast. I was planning to use a Crucial 1TB MX200 drive though I think the laptop maxes out at SATA II anyway--seems like a reliable drive though, best I can tell. Perhaps even a 2nd SSD in a caddy in the optical drive bay if that will work. I rather like the Lenovo utilities etc if it is not too much trouble to keep them, though it seems to complicate the restore with extra partitions. I have never tried the included Rescure and restore to back up/clone. If that preserves the current architecture, perhaps that is the way to go. I can't afford to make a hash of this so I thoght to check here first. Any comments appreciated.

Thank you so much for commenting. I have about 450GB on the current HDD and I read rescue and recovery is slow as molasses with that much data. My hope was even though slow if I use R&R to my USB3 back up external HDD and put he SSD where the internal HDD is now , I can have a perfect clone of what I have now except the HDD replaced with the SSD including the Lenovo partitions. Perhaps that is wishful thinking. ShadowProtect to clone is rather fast and I have never tried R&R. Restoring might take forever as I read the recovery environment is limited to USB2 speeds externally. I had planned to put in a second SSD later but need to consider your suggested procedure.

  • ICloud Keychain won't suggest passwords for existing Facebook users

I've been monkeying around with the icloud keychain for the last two days and it definately behaves erraticlay. Sometimes it will make suggestions on the first try. Sometimes I need to log out of a website and log back in for it to work.
Anyways my main issue is it wont remember or suggest passwords from within the Facebook settings for an existing user. It will suggest a password if you want to signup for a new account that is out of the question.
Ive cleared the keychain of any existing passwords for FB, is this something to do with FB's own internal security settings? Ive messed arrounf with those but nothing seemed to make a diference.
Does anybody have any ideas for a work arround?

Hi judysings and thank you to answer.
Unfortunately, I already tried the steps :
iCloud Keychain is not syncing with other devices.
    and
I restored my iOS device from iCloud Backup, but my iCloud Keychain items are not there.
several times with no success. (I'm not concerned by the other steps.)
I even restored my Mac and my iPhone as new today... still no iCloud Keychain sync between them.

I cannot access Content Library in iMovie - Content Library doesn't show on the iMovie screen and is greyed out when accessed through "windows" tab at the top. Also unable to update the projects/events (a suggested solution for a similar question). I haven't had this issue before, I have always used the content library on the screen but haven't used this for about a month. How can I make the Content Library available?

Thanks so much! I am backing up the entire computer now with an external hard drive - this should be fine right? And surely if I am backing up the whole computer these projects/videos will be backed up too? I wasn't sure how to do this any other way and I am clearly not great with tech issues. Once this is done and I am sure my projects/videos are safe I will do the delete and reinstall bit. Thanks for taking the time to help

How to find function module or Bapi for particular transaction in sap?
If you mean that you need to know what BAPI's a particular tranx uses, which I can only assume that's what you mean, then you should access the code behind the transaction and search for 'CALL'. That normally is the standard method that think that most people use.
Suppose you want to find the bapi for creating a sales order, you usually use transaction VA01 for this.
    1. Find out the package of the transaction.
Start Va01 go to system --> status.
    Double click on transaction
    Package is VA
    Open this package in SE80
    Open business engineering-->Business object types
Find the BO which sounds the most appropriate
I would suggest BUS2032 Sales Order
    Double click.
    Open methods.
Find the released method with from data or something similar in the name
    , Createfromdat2
Position the cursor in it and click the program button
Scroll down to find the bapi used in this method
With this way you can also find out programs and FM's
    2. Start va01 go to system-->status

    Double click on package
Read the application component. (this is SD-SLS Sales)
    Then open the transaction BAPI

Anyone got any experience of the pro tools suggested tweaks for mac performance e.g turning off Dashboard and Spotlight in terminal and so on. They are found on the DUC forum. Turn OFF Airport, if you have wireless internet.
Run Logic by itself e.g. don't run email, safari, videogames, unix console, Word, etc... at the same time. This goes for ANY DAW platform.
Printing effects when you have commited to them, ie if you have a CPU hungry plugin, print it as soon as you're done editing the MIDI / or audio performance. then remove the plugin.

  • SSD disks and swap

I know this has been discussed numbers of times but still I find it confusing. My new PC will have a SSD (and no traditional hard disk). My question is what to do with the swap and especially the swapiness parameter? Is it really a good idea to reduce it? How the default value of 60 has been decided?
What confuse me is that I have seen too many posts that say, roughly, that we need to avoid any write to the SSD in order to spare it; often to the point we can wonder if the SSD will remain useful... I have seen that SSD supports 100000 write cycles; with a 120GB SSD, you will thus need to write 12000 Tera (12 peta) before it fails. It is clear to me that small things (like putting /var outside the SSD somehow) makes no sense. Even the swap makes me dubious: is it really worthwhile to try to spare the SSD, will it not become obsolete well before it dies. Because the SSD is faster, it could actually make sense to swap on it on an optimal way? SSD supports fast reading of nonadjacent data, which seems a big plus for the swap.
Edited: It seems that this page http://ef.gy/statistics:ssd-write-endurance go in my sense. You will need more that six months to wear a SSD if you write to it at the maximum possible rate 24h/24h. If that is true, the SSD will never fail unless you do it on purpose. I have no estimate how much data we write on a hard disk on average but I think it is only a tiny fraction of that...
    # mod edit: please don't rollback edits that make your thread title more relevant to the actual question you are asking. "SSD disk" means fsck all...

I think it is highly dependent on what you are using your machine for, but yes, I too see very little swap use with 8GB RAM. In my experience, hibernation on linux (suspend to disk) is far from perfect, and has always cased me more issues than the functionality was worth.
Recently though, I was able to set up Intel Rapid Start Technology, which is like hibernation controlled by the firmware.  Typically you would use it by setting a timeout in the bios.  So after being suspended for that set period of time, it would power back up partially and write the contents do disk, then "hibernate".  But as of 3.11 Matthew Garrett created a userspace driver for it, so I can set it to only function in the event that my battery gets super low (at what point it decides that I'm not quite sure).
If your machien supports IRST, you should be aware that because it is firmware controlled, you cannot get away with "hibernating" on an Intel Rapid Start Technology partition that is less than the size of your RAM.  It does not compress or try to opitimize the RAM contents for size at all.  Also, it must be used on an SSD, so it is likely going to be taking valuable space on the faster disk.  Interstingly, gehidore has the same machine as me, yet IRST works great for me, yet not at all for him.

  • SSD setup suggestions (looking for)

Hi, I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" i5. I was thinking about switching to an SSD / HDD setup, using the Optibay to replace the Superdrive.
My dad recently bought a Macbook Air, and it boots in like 7 seconds, it's incredible. Will I have the same performances as him with a SSD/HDD setup?
Second question? Is it better to put the SSD in the original hard drive place or in the SuperDrive place? What are the advantages/disadvantages of the two different configurations (for instance, since II can now hear my drive spinning more than before, can it be put to stop in the Optibay when it's not needed?)?
These are the two SSD I find more appealing, what do you think about them?
    OCZ Vertex 2 120GB
    Patriot Inferno 120GB
Also, some reported that having the two drives slows boot for some reason compared to an SSD only setup, why is that?
Thank you in advance and sorry for the many questions.

I have just done a SSD upgrade to my MBP 2010 i7.
As for the SSD i went with the OWC 240GB, it took me ages to decided on what to get but im glad i got it, its just great.
My set up with the SSD and HDD took some thought. My SSD sits in my optibay and the HDD says where it is for a few good reasons.
The MBP 2010 only has SATA II so it makes no diffrence in speed where you put your SSD.
Moving the HDD could cause you problems with the motion detection and spin down, seeing it makes no diffrence where the SSD goes i thought i would keep the HDD where it was designed to be.
I have the full OSX, applications and some documents on the SSD, i have left the SSD the location of my "Users location" as this means i can un-mount the HDD when i like (saves a little power). I have short cuts for the folers i have on the HDD (music, movies and photos) and have set up itunes and apearure to read from the HDD.
I have to say i reinstalled a few times to get it just right and it work really well,

  • Advice sought for a new PC build

    Hello,
I could use a little advice about an "as silent as silent can be" system that I am trying to put together right now. I plan to build it myself. I have installed / replaced components in PC systems before but it will be the first time I build a PC from scratch.
    Purpose of PC
To blitz anything that CS6 can throw at it right now and still be putting up a respectable fight when CS11 is eventually released. In order of importance, the system needs to excel at:
Video editing and effects using Premiere and AfterEffects
3D animation using Autodesk 3DS Max etc
Multimedia content authoring    (Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver)
    Music production     (Propellerhead Reason, REAPER)
Internet browsing, emails, iTunes and all other 21st century time-wasting activities.
Before I place any orders, I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you can see anything that I might have forgotten, any potential incompatibility issues or just any terrible decisions that I really need to rethink.
    Components
    Windows Professional  64bit OS
    Do I need Ultimate?
Corsair Obsidian Series 550D Quiet Mid-Tower Case
Is this case cool and quiet. Are there better options than this that don’t look like either a teenage warrior’s wet dream or a hotel minibar?
Corsair Professional Series AX 760 Watt ATX/EPS Fully Modular 80 PLUS Platinum PSU
Honestly I have no idea. I picked it because it is highly rated for efficiency and should go with the case. Are there better options at a similar price point, especially in terms of heat / noise / known reliability issues?
    Intel  Core i7-3930K 6-Core Processor
I am definitely going with this CPU. I think.
Corsair 120mm Hydro Series H80i Digital High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
I chose this rather than the 100i because it can exhaust out the back of the case. I think this will be a better configuration for the case I have chosen and the location where the PC will live.
Asus P9X79 PRO Motherboard (Socket 2011, Intel X79 chipset)

    Everything else.
My budget is reasonably flexible but I do not want to waste money on components that offer only minimal performance benefits.  Also, I have no plans at present to get into overclocking etc. Far too scary for a newbie.
If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read this and any advice at all would be very much appreciated.

    Hello
I finished my build at the weekend and installed the OS and so far the process has been much better than I could have hoped for. Thank you for all of your help.
The computer is much faster and quieter than any computer I have ever owned before and (touch wood) is a joy to use. The Windows Experience rating is 7.8.
I am still running through checks to make sure everything is OK before installing the rest of the software but I have come across one issue that I think I ought to double check before I get in too deep.
So far I have connected 4 drives to the Intel SATA controller of my ASUS P9X79 Deluxe motherboard set to RAID mode:
Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD    ---- Not in RAID
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD    ---- Not in RAID
    2 x WD Black 500GB SSD in RAID 0
    Pioneer Bluray Re-Writer BDR-208DBK
I have a WD Black 2TB waiting to be added to the system for non performance-critical storage once I am certain that I don't have an issue with set up.
I have 32GB of RAM installed.
I have installed and run the Samsung Magician software and the performance benchmarks for the drives are:
    Seq Read 128K
    Seq Write 128K
    Random Read 4K
    Random Write 4K
    Test Range
    Samsung 840 Pro 128GB
    533
    226
    88655
    4788
    1GB
    Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
    534
    263
    91169
    4956
    1GB
    2 x WD Black RAID 0
    241
    265
    2610
    1462
    100MB
The SSD read speeds look fine  but write speeds seem to be very low to me, certainly much lower than the speeds quoted by Samsung and confirmed in multiple reviews.
Does this look OK to you and if not, do you have any ideas about how I could improve SSD write performance?
So far I have followed the steps in the following guide to SSD/HDD optimization for Windows 7 to no avail (checked for latest firmware and drivers, turned off indexing, disabled hibernation, checked that TRIM is enabled, shrank page file to 4GB on OS drive, changed power options so drives never sleep .... have I missed anything?):
    http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdd s
Finally, does the RAID drive's performance look ok.
I am suspicious that the write performance of the SSDs seems to be pegged to the write performance of the RAID, although that might be just coincidence.
One last thing, and thanks for your patience.
I am tempted to switch back to AHCI mode in the BIOS and re-run the benchmarks to see if the SATA RAID mode is the problem. This won't be too much of a hassle as the system is empty at present.
But if / when I return to  RAID mode, I shouldn't have to do any pre-installing because the RSTe drivers are now already installed and up to date, is this correct?
My apologies if these issues have been covered before in the forum. I have looked but I couldn't find anything specific.
    Regards
    Michael

  • RAID-1 for root/swap on Solaris 10 x86

OK, now that I have solved my problem with the update manager I am in the process of trying to create RAID-1 volumes for root and swap. I am working my way through the process by following the procedure in Solaris Volume Manager Administration Guide. I have run into a few errors in the doc, e.g. referent to using installboot as opposed to installgrub.
Now I am trying to create my new volume using the Enhanced Storage tool within the Solaris Management Console. I get as far as trying to create the new volume (RAID-0) with the root slice in it but it fails with metainit telling me that the slice is already mounted on /. (No kidding -- that is the whole idea.)
Does anyone have a working procedure to create RAID-1 for root and swap?
(BTW, I am trying to do this from the doc and admin guides without stealing time from folks on the list here but I just keep running into walls.)
(Once I get that done I hope to use zfs for the rest of the storage.)

I am attempting to set up RAID-1 (mirroring) for root and swap. I am attempting to work from "Solaris Volume Manager Administration Guide," Part No: 816452012. (Same place you pointed me except I downloaded the pdf so I could page through it faster.) On page 105 you will find an entry for "Create a mirror from the root (/) filesystem," which directs you to page 122, "x86: How to Create a RAID-1 Volume From the root (/) File System by Using DCA.
I have two identical 300GB PATA drives with 20GB root/boot and swap partitions. The slices are all identical as to size and location, i.e. c0d0s0 is root and c1d0s0 will be the mirror for root. (I will use "mirror drive" to refer to c1d0.
Proceeding through the steps I have verified I can boot the mirror. I have created the slices. I have used fdisk to put the master boot block on the mirror drive. I have installed grub on the mirror drive.
At this point I am on step six which reads:
"Create a new RAID-0 volume on the slice from the previous step by using one of the following
methods. Only the single slice can be included in the RAID-0 volume. " At that point I decided to try to proceed using the Enhanced Storage Tool from smc.
As to RAID-0 vs. RAID-1, it is my understanding from the doc that one must first create the RAID-0 volumes, each containing just the single slice, one for each of the two volumes that will be combined to make the RAID-1 mirror, hence my comment about RAID-0.
I see your point about using the -f option to force the creation of the volume for the mounted root filesystem. One would think that, if they included the option of using the Enhanced Storage Tool that perhaps it might work. (I did not see a way to force the creation of the RAID-0 volume.) Certainly using metainit with the -f flag makes sense.
Next step will be to go back and punt EST in favor of using metainit from the command line.
I get the feeling that no one at sun is actually trying what is in the manuals to ensure correctness.
