SUID ?

Hello - I needed to clean permissions, and now I'm left with a cryptic (for me, at any rate) message: "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."
What does this mean? Do I need to be concerned about it? Is there a "fix"? Any advice/comments would be appreciated.

What does this mean?
That you have the current system components installed.
Do I need to be concerned about it?
No. Just ignore it.

What does this message mean? "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired"  I get this when I try to repair permissions in disk utility.

It's an innocuous error you can ignore. It was introduced with previous updates for ARD and/or Java before Lion. These are messages, not errors. They will cause no harm, and they will be repeated each time you repair permissions.

I just ran Verify permissions  in Disc utilities and  this was  one result listed [ amidst other permissions found awry  I've said 'repair' to - undertaking those now ] :
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

If you don't have any processes consuming a lot of CPU time, then the computer shouldn't be running hot.
and wondering if no sleep has cuased this - because sometime this year I did change to no sleep to sleep after an hour [I think] which I thought would make computer wear less/ last longer   - should I go back to  "no sleep"  ?
thanks for any advice about smooth operation  checkups etc for non computer savvy type  who doesn't want to lose or wreck anything !

    You can ignore that message.
As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' (when you repair the disk, not just verify it) then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:

Do not worry. It is probably a permission you should ignore, but you should check that the permission appears in this site > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Permissions repair: SUID file system/library/coreservices/remotemanagement/ARDAgent/contents/MacOS/ARDAgent has been modified and will not be repaired

I have a mid 2007 iMac running OS Mavericks and the hard drive is failing. When doing a disk permissions verify it shows  SUID file system/library/coreservices/remotemanagement/ARDAgent/contents/MacOS/ARDAgent has been modified and will not be repaired. I do not have a backup of my system due to my external drive I use for backing up my system has stopped working. Can I repair this myself without having to reinstall the OS so I don't loose my any of my files.

    You can safely ignore that.

it means that those files have set user id bits which shouldn't be there according to the permissions database. an s-bit makes a command run with the user id of the file for that command rather than the user invoking the command. for example, if you invoke unix restore command from terminal it ought to run as you. however, on your system it would run as root because the file /sbin/restore used to call this command is owned by root and has a user s-bit on it.
as i said this has nothing to do with your sleep issues but you might as well fix it.

  • Getting SUID has been changed and won't be fixed when using Disk Repair utility.

While attempting a disk repair, the first message that appears in the string is, "Warning: SUID file System/Library/CoreS...has been modified and will not be repaired." Is this a bad thing? If so, how do I fix it? My computer has been taking forever to startup and freezing quite often.

The long answer is that Apple doesn't update the permissions database at every system update. Since things change in the update that the permissions database doesn't know about, Repair Permissions flags them.
Repairing permissions is a long fought battle. There are those that do and those that don't. I think it's just voodoo. The only time I repair permissions is if I get errors indicating that a file cannot be read or app crashes when it is accessing something in the system level (if I can tell). Repair permissions only affects the system folders, not your home folder.

    Hi gmckay,
The "Waring:SUID file..." messages are only warning message and are not a concern. The SUID bit is supposed to be set on those file. This is a glitch in the installer program- that does not update the installer database with the correct SHA1 digest for those files. The secure.log entry is a glitch in the newsyslog.conf file that sets the permissions on the secure.log less permissive than those recorded in the installer database. The ACL warning messages are caused by another glitch in the installer database. What concerns me are the double ACL messages for "LIbrary". Is this a typo?

  • Suid: Problem with dynamic linker

    Hi,
i have a multithread program that is compiled with the additional option "-xarch=v8plus". The consequence is, that the following library
    /usr/lib/cpu/sparcv8plus/libCstd_isa.so.1
    is linked.
When i set the permission "suid" to the programm and call the program with an other user the library is not linked at all.
    Following efforts failed:
    - library copied to another directory and compiled with the option "-R" and the same directory
    - compiled with the option "-R /usr/lib/cpu/sparcv8plus/libCstd_isa.so.1"
    - use of command "crle -c /var/ld/ld.config -u -s /usr/lib/cpu/sparcv8plus"
    Can anyone help me please?
Has anybody experience with this or similar problem?
    Many Thanks in advance
    thomas

You have run into a security feature of Solaris.
First let me say that you should never use -R or -L directive that point into system library areas, or into the compiler installation area. It can prevent the right libraries from being linked. Using the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable or equivalent operations like crle is usually not a good idea, for similar reasons.
Now I'll explain about the libCstd_isa.so.1 library.
A feature of Solaris allows specifying a basic shared library, with automatic overrides by libraries customized for a particular hardware version, or Instruction Set Architecture. We use this feature for the implementation of the string class in libCstd. The string class in this library uses a reference-counted implementation, which requires updating usage counts as an atomic operation in multi-threaded programs.
Prior to the v8plus architecture (UltraSPARC), there was no atomic operation available for such synchronization. The basic version of the library uses a thread mutex, which is expensive. For v8plus and better, we use the CAS instruction for synchronization, avoiding the need for a thread mutex. The v8plus version of the string code is in libCstd_isa.so.1. The basic libCstd.so.1 (filter) library is built to interpose (filtee) library libCstd_isa.so.1 when running on a v8plus system (or better). No program contains a dependency on the ISA library. It is accessed only via the filter/filtee mechanism.
A setuid program is assumed to have security issues -- why else would it need to run as a specific user? For secure programs, the runtime loader ignores preload or filter requests for libraries that are not in the /lib/secure or /usr/lib/secure directories. Otherwise, the author of the secure program could not be sure that the intended versions of libraries were being used.
I can think of only two solutions for you:
    1. Find a way to avoid making the program setuid, or
    2. Build the program with -xarch=v8 instread of v8plus.

  • Lost start up internal disc and getting SUID File warning code?

In spite of everyone saying this is normal "SUID file "system/library/core services/remoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARD/agent" has been modified and will not be repaired. It is not a normal thing? My Mac is only three moths old, and I downloaded Lion, lost my Microsoft apps, resumes, and all my back up in icloud? Whole library crashed and it's a mess. Now there is now start up disc in the system? Very annoying.

If you repair Permissions and get the message Permissions repair complete, then go back and repair again, anything that reappears is not really an "error." Just ignore it.
If the Lion upgrade from Snow Leopard did all that and you have no backup to restore, then you're out of luck. But I don't understand how you went from Snow Leopard on a three months old machine. It wouldn't have come with Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard couldn't have been installed on it. Maybe you want to clarify.
EDIT: this would appear now to be a Lion, not a Snow Leopard issue. Why don't you ask for help in the Lion forum? Perhaps there are some fixes for your issues.

  • Running vmware-user-suid-wrapper stops keyboard/mouse input

I'm attempting to run Arch under VMWare Fusion 3 in Mac OS X.  I have previously run Arch on a variety of Windows and Linux machines using VirtualBox without issue. (I would use VirtualBox on the Mac as well, but it's performance is incredibly slow.)
I followed the instructions in the Wiki here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _in_VMware
However, when I run the command as listed in the guide:
    $ ls -l /usr/bin/vmware-user-suid-wrapper
    the wrapper's permissions are
    -rwsr-sr-t 1 root root
rather than what is shown in the wiki.  If I then attempt to execute vmware-user-suid-wrapper, the system stops accepting input from my mouse and keyboard.  Executing the command via sudo does nothing, nor does running chmod 4755 as suggested in the guide.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Hi There! I have a question on Kernel Task-Threat. How can I clean my computer? This is the message that persists when cleaning disc--Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.

That's a routine message and it means nothing. Don't waste your time repairing permissions unless you know you have a problem that can be solved that way, which you probably never will.

  • After Repairing Permissions, "Warning: SUID file. . ."  So, is it a concern

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I don't what this means, nor even where to begin to find out. Thoughts.

Hi VALman, a list of repairable items are gone indeed. I used the OS on OCZ-V30GbSSD and the Home Folder from WD-1TbBC before by Leopard with this message then I login to a Guest Account change the Home Folder back to my OS drive with new UUID as well. Then fast user switching OK, new Finder window, run Maintenance software, shut down. Turn on, rename as previous and change back the Home Folder to the WD-Caviar. All this happened when I renamed the drive by adding new icon&name for "fun".
So I don't know if your system description is up to date, mine is Octo- Nehalem.
