Suitability of iWeb for architect's web site

I am an architect, and need to set up a website that is set up to show several categories of building types, and then under each category show several projects, and under each project show multiple images of that project. Can iWeb do this?
Also, I already have a domain name, and need to know if it can be used for my iWeb site.
Any comments out there?

Darryl ~ One thing to bear in mind is that iWeb is designed for personal websites, not commercial ones — so it lacks integrated Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If SEO is important to you, you may want to consider alternatives to iWeb — such as _Sandvox Pro_:

I have used iWeb to create a web site to upload to my .mac account before and its really easy.
Now my question is, can I create a web site with iWeb but upload it to a web site of my own on a third party web hosting company?
if yes, can you also explain how to do it?

Yes, you can. First, you probably want this 3rd party hosted site to be separate from your original site. This might entail making a separate Domain file for iWeb to keep the sites separate. Another way to do this would be to create a separate system login account with its own instance of iWeb and separate Domain file. Again, this is a way of keeping the sites in different Domain files so that you can publish both sites independently and to different places. If, instead, you are basically starting over and don't mind erasing your previous website then you can disregard this.
Assuming that you have the particulars of preparing your separate site worked out (as above), then all you have to do is to design your separate site and then in iWeb choose "Publish to Folder". This will place all the files needed for this website in a folder on your desktop. Then you will need to get ahold of an FTP program of your choosing (Fetch and CyberDuck are two that are mentioned all the time). You will also need to figure out exactly where you 3rd party webserver wants you to upload files. You will use the FTP program to navigate to the desired web server directory and then upload the site folder that iWeb made into that directory. That's it!

IWeb vs. RapidWeaver for small business web site development

I am going to develop a web site for our small tour business that would contain descriptive text, pictures, testimonials, and an e-mail link that cannot be swept by bots. I have been scouring the forums about iWeb 2.0 and am hearing that there are a number of factors that limit it's suitability for a commercial web site. I would appreciate some feedback on the following points.
1. Would using an iWeb 2.0 template cause display problems on a PC running Internet Explorer; Microsoft does not follow approved web standards?
2. I would want search engines to find and index our site so that people could find it using Google or Yahoo. I understand that .Mac blocks access by spiders, but you can manually list your site with Google. Is this true?
3. I want to use our domain name in the e-mail address, is this possible with iWeb?
4. I would also like to use my .Mac account to host a site about my grandchildren using the iWeb generated URL, this doesn't seem possible if I have listed my business domain name.
5. Does anyone have any experience using RapidWeaver? This seems to be very iWeb like and may be a better solution for a small business.
6. Should I just use iWeb for the grandkids and RapidWeaver for the business, I have never written an line of code in my life and need something that is truly WYSIWYG.

Hi There, I'll give you my info based on what I know and i'm sure otheres will correct me where they have other experiences....
1. all websites have niggles regardless of what program you use to create them with, iWeb sites are pretty good for compatibility, but as with any site, the more 'stuff' you add, fancy code or funny image types there wil lbe a number of people who have problems. I've found iWeb to be far less troublesome than sites generated from scratch using other programs, even dreamweaver (i'm a graphic designer).
2. dunno about .mac blocking stuff, but i've done commercial sites for clients that I've submitted to Google and they show up just fine when searched for.
3. e-mail address can be ANYTHING. for example you could even put a link to send me mail if you wanted. it is literally just a link to open someones mail program and add a mail address / subject ready for them to send.
4. You can set iWeb / .Mac to use a specific address that you have purchased. and you can have multiple domains from within iWeb.you can't directly publish sites to more than one address, but you can publish to folders and upload to different addresses, or if you make more than one site in iWeb, the first in th elist will become the one that your browser goes to using th emain address (www.yourdomin.com), but you'd stil lbe able to have other sites with their own sub address (www.yourdomain.com/grandkids) for example. you can even add password protection to different sites so your clients don't see photos of you and the grandkids lounging in the garden the day you said you were doing their job!
5. I can happily use Flash Dreamweaver, iWeb and plenty of other stuff, but found Rapidweaver to be a poor version of iWeb. It has certain benfits, but it is nowhere near as user friendly. I'd start with iWeb regardless, and see how you get on. Plenty of people have trouble enough with iWeb and it's basically a no-brainer compared to anything else out there - (short of yahoo webbuilder (pretty good for freebie!)
Just beware of the iWeb templates, they are getting very well known and don't lend themsleves to looking very professional. but use iWeb as a program to put together a simple site and it is easy to use and gets pretty tidy results. see here for simple site done with iWeb without using templates, and resulting in a more pro look and doesn't look like everyone elses site.

6. if you've never even tried editing HTML you want iWeb i promise you. it really is the best for starting offf with, and like i say if you design your own site rather than just using the templates without changing stuff you can get some good results - and quickly / easily.

Can the WLPI be used for a perl web site

We have a client, which has a perl(Apache/mod_perl) based web site. Cutomers submit orders on the web site and right now there is an order-processing system, but the client is looking for workflow/process product which will ease with all this order processing stuff like acknowledgement, approval, shipping, etc....So my question here is, can they use the WeBLogic Process Integrator for this purpose? However I would not recommend it, at least as your primary connection for the SmartTV. Relying primarily on VZW data plans is a bad way to view video services such as Netflix at the moment. It is very easy to chew through your plan with only a few videos depending on the resolution and a few other factors. Not only that but a smart TV may be periodically checking the internet from time to time to download firmware updates or provide reporting stats to the manufacturer.
VZW Jetpacks continue to be a poor choice for home primary internet replacement. The data plans that come from VZW and all other metered wireless providers are not friendly to this kind of internet traffic. Letting your guard down for a moment could result in costly overages and once you accumulate them you will be liable to pay them. A normal cable or DSL line with a high/unlimited cap would be more appropriate.
If the Jetpack is a backup or temporary internet connection then go for it. This is what a Jetpack is designed for, you can get by every now and then without too much risk. Just make sure you are powering your Jetpack down as soon as you are done streaming and keep a close eye on your data plan before and after any major viewing.

Thank you, it worked with just F5. I don't know whether CTRL + F5 would work because the problem has not come back yet!

IWeb 08 Corrupts old web sites

Just another warning to you folks out there. iWeb corrupts web sites big time. Here's my steps:
1. I have a web site that was (notice I said WAS) 177 MB. I opened it with iWeb 08 and clicked upgrade. Saved it.
2. I then opened it and flipped through the various pages and it was o.k.
Modified the size of an image at the top of my main BLOG page. Hit save again.
3. Reloaded the site, and flipped through the pages and two of them had MISSING FILES (images related to the theme (yes, it was an Apple theme), missing graphics I had added to the page, etc.)
I can easily reproduce this by restoring my backup or using another site file, so it is definitely a HIGH FREQUENCY problem.
Hope this helps you all in the trenches! Hope all addresses this REALLY SOON!

for movies I now upload my movies to google video on private setting, I then embed the code in the same way you would embed a google map or You Tube clip.
It seems to work better than importing the video into iweb

Calculators and Searches for Real Estate Web Site

I have a friend who has asked if I can make a real estate page for them them using my iWeb '08 program.
I've never done anything like mortgage calculators and home/msl searches. Does anyone know how to do these things, web sites that help with this, or is it even possible?
Any advise, tutorials, links, anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

A realtor doesn't allow clients to search for homes - that's their job.
The best thing to have on a site like this is a form that potential clients can fill in with all the details of their requirements.
Wufoo has a mortgage application form which I modified for collecting home buyer information. Don't ask me how I did it because it was about two years ago!

How to add a specific font needed for a particular web site?

The web site "www.gadima.com" requires the Marathi font (True Type), for displaying its content properly in Marathi language. This font is already installed in the CentOs. Firefox does not display the information in proper Marathi fonts, but displays only garbage.

I see the same on Linux in Firefox 3.6.25, so it looks that the MillenniumGanesh and LscapeRegDevPriya fonts aren't working in Firefox 3.6.25 (it works for me in Firefox 9).

Flash not displaying correctly for only one web site

In the last 3 or 4 days I seem to have problems with the flash content of one single web site not displaying correctly from my laptop. I have the same problem from both IE (version7.0.5730.11) and from FF (3.5.8). The site works fine from my desktop system so it's not the site specifically. The site (www.transparent.com/wotd/today/spanish.htm) has an embeded flash segment that does not display correctly and thus I can't click on two of the embedded buttons. It also does not display the background pattern for the flash. I'm running flash 10.0.45.2 based upon right clicking from within the embedded flash which takes me to the Adobe page with my version info. The Adobe page seems to display fine.
As far as I know I'm not having problems with another instance of flash - only this site.
Any thoughts on how to diagnose the problem? I've not added any new programs since this website stopped working but do have some background "tune up" programs that run. I'm assuming some settings are out of wack but don't know where to start looking. Any help folks woulc provide would be appreicated.

Well, that is hard to tell. Like I said the website may have updated their technology. Just because it works with the Desktop, doesn't mean there is not a reason that the laptop might not have a problem. You have 2 different systems and
most likely different configurations.
You may want to check Tools and in the add ons for both, look for Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX Control..Flash10e.ocx should be installed and enabled.
Also for each check C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash Right click the Flash folder and make sure for IE that the files are vs 10.0.45.2 by checking the properties.
If you have the correct Flash files and the correct SWO then, some other cause would be looked at.
It has been my experience to not "assume", but verify:-)

Customer request: better support for Flash-heavy web sites!? Feasible?

The company I work for (a SUN partner) is currently engaged in a desktop virtualisation project at a customer who is in the health care sector. Of course Sun VDI isn't the only thing they have been looking at. But so far we've always come out on top.
PanoLogic and their "Pano Cube" thin-clients were looked at but never really considered. The argument being "Nobody is using that!" and they don't want to play "Star Trek" and "boldly buy things nobody has bought before". So it was "Thank you and bye bye PanoLogic". However ... PanoLogic is on their radar now and they might still go back one day ...
Next up was VMware View. They didn't like what they saw. So for now they will keep their ESX and vSphere servers but VMware View is out of the game for now.
So right now there is still us with our Sun VDI / Sun SSGD offer and a competitor with their Citrix offerings. So far we've always managed to tip the balance in our favor.
This Wednesday though we had a few of customer's managers visit us. They wanted to see a Sun VDI 3.1 live demo. All was fine, all was well, and we had the impression that they were so close to giving the "go ahead", when one of the pro-Citrix guys opened two web sites in his VDI demo session:

Both sites are extremely extremely Flash-heavy.
And of course: The performance was sub-optimal. We were running this on a Sun Ray 2, 1600 x 1200 pixels. Even though the sound was tip top in both the Windows XP and in the Linux sessions (they admit that in all the other products they have tried so far the sound was choppy or there was even no sound at all .... ) the video was slightly out of sync. And the web site "2advanced.com" took too long to load.
So now all of a sudden the ability to play these two web sites "tip top" on a Sun Ray 2 is THE killer argument for them. It doesn't even matter that all other solutions they have looked at can't show those two web sites at all, now it's all of a sudden that Sun Rays and Sun VDI just "aren't good enough" at playing those two web sites.
Customer is king. Customer is always right.
So ... anyone here from Sun have any suggestions how we might improve performance of those two web sites inside the VDI sessions? Is there anything we could tweak and tune inside VDI 3.1 to get the max performance out of our setup?
Or are there any products in the pipeline like new Sun Ray clients with improved multimedia performance that I could tell them about so we could keep them interested in Sun's products ... ?

We don't have flash acceleration for LinuxI know. And yet the "adiacom.ch" web site performed better on Firefox & Ubuntu than on Win XP-SP3 & MSIE 8.

Are you using the MS-RDP severSun VDI 3.1 ... I get the VDI login mask, I login, I pick a Windows XP desktop from the available pools, and Windows XP appears. The desktops are provided via VMware vSphere.

and have the Flash acceleration bits installed?I remember installing various multimedia bits that can be found in the "Supplemental" sub-directory of the SRWC 2.2 ZIP file: "SunMMR" and "SunWinUSB". But now that I look at the web page you linked to I am a bit confused .... Did I install an old version? I will have to check that again and make sure this stuff is really really installed.

IWeb and Comcast personal web site

Has anybody ever used iWeb to post web pages to a Comcast personal web site? I am impressed by what I can make with iWeb, but have completely failed when I try to use it with Comcast. Comcast suggests uploading files by ftp, but I can't find them on the Mac and the posting options in iWeb don't seem to work with Comcast. Any suggestions?

What version of iWeb are you using - iWeb 08 or iWeb 09?
If iWeb 09, then click on the site name on the left hand side and there is a drop down menu with all your publishing options - one of these is publish to MobileMe, then ftp to server and then publish to a local folder.
If you are using iWeb 08, then under file, there will be two options - one being to publish to MobileMe and the other to a local folder.
If you want to upload your files manually, then you would need to select publish to a local fodler and then use Cyberduck to upload your html and css files to Comcast. Cyberduck is a free and dedicated ftp programme.

Using iWeb for non dot-mac sites

I own a number of domains that I'd like to use iWeb on. Am I able to utilize iWeb for a non .mac domain, or do I need to use something like Dreamweaver?

No, in fact I have a sneaky suspicion that not using dot-mac sites will eliminate a lot of problems other people have. You will also lose some of the effects like the nicer slideshow etc.
I have never used dot-mac and never encountered any of the uploading/publishing problems that are so often mentioned on this forum.
Here is what you do:
After editing your website you choose :Publish to a folder.
This lets you choose a location on your hardrive into which all the necessary files will be compiled/rendered. In this folder you will find an htlm file plus a folder with the necessary files for easch of your pages.. This publishing is done lightning fasy pecause it is done locallly and not trhough your internetconnection like when you published to dot-mac. Also post-editing is easy and hassle free.
For editing and uploading my website I use "Transmit" but there are lots of other applications like "Fetch"
What to upload?
Well I believe the jury is still out on this.
I just upload the contents of the published folder and that works for me. Other publish the whole folder plus the dummy "Index file" that is generated outside that folder. You will heve to find out for your self.
If any changes or editing has to be done afterwards, I republish and then just upload the altered files.
There is one more thing I do, and I believe others don't. I keep my domain file in the same folder where I keep the Published folder.
E.g. there is a festival website, so I have a folder "Festival" in which I keep the domains file, and the published "Festival website" folder.
This way it is easy to keep various different websites.
When you want to edit one of them, go to that folder and double click the domains file, this will start iWeb with the right website for you to edit.
Really very easy.

Iweb 06 cant update web site

ok so I have this web site i created in iweb 06 system crashed a while backed now iweb does not see my web site i can go to it but I cant update it is there anything I can do to get it back into my iweb app?? any help would be great

This might work.
Try to find this file: library> application support> iweb> domain.sites
With iweb not open double click this file. It should open your site.
Keep a back up of this file.
