Suitable 2nd PC display

I am looking around for a reasonably priced PC monitor to use as an extended desktop/palette monitor for my iMac 27".
I have a range of video adaptors so should be able to connect to most cables but it seems that PC monitors these days come with VGA/HDMI connectors and I am not finding many with DVI which would be my preference.
I understand HDMI is basically for TV/Video connections, how good is it for a computer display?
Anyone have experience and possibly can suggest what to look for and look out for?
Thanks
Peter

Surely there's dvi monitors you can find with greater than HDMI 1920 x 1080 resolution.
Googling "dvi monitors" yields a bunch.  If you were interested in 27" monitors then googling "dvi 27" monitors" will yield a bunch of them.
Look for something you like.  The look for reviews of that specific one.

  • HT202801 Cannot connect 2nd Thunderbolt Display or HDMI TV

    Hi,
I can't seem to get my 2nd Thunderbolt Display or HDMI TV to work or be recognized on my MacPro. I do have my primary Thunderbolt display working. I went through the setup options that was on the how to article to set it up, and still nothing. Under About this Mac, it only recognizes the primary display as well. Any suggestions? Thanks

When I unplugged my primary monitor, the second one did not come on. I did go through all of the thunderbolt ports with the primary monitor and all of them had a signal to it. I unplugged my second displays power and plugged it back in, then plugged it back into the MacPro and it came on. Now if I can only figure out the HDMI tv signal I will be all set. Thank you all for your help.

  • 2nd External Display Failing After Yosemite Upgrade

I have a late 2009 iMac 27 (3.06) that ran perfectly fine with TWO external displays (both HP Pavilon 27 xi's).  Upgraded yesterday to Yosemite and now 3rd monitor (2nd external) fails to find a source feed.  Any advice out there?  (#1 external monitor is connected via direct mini DVI to HDMI via a Rocketfish adapter; works perfect; 2nd external monitor is connected via a USB to CableMatters HDMI to DVI adapter to back of HP monitor - worked perfectly for months until last nite; (HDMI to HDMI never worked).  Advice?  Thanks.

I have used an Acer S230Hl on three Makbook Pros via the VGA wire and a thunderbolt adapter. No problems at all with 10.6, 10.7. Worked perfectly.
With 10.8 the display would not wake up from sleep, most of the time. I found an annoying work around that helped maybe 70-80% of the time: unplug the VGA+adapter monitor feed, and then go to system preferences>>displays>>Color>>open the S230HL profile and then simply plug the monitor back in. I also delayed the sleep feature for 2 hours to prevent the problem, but it happens most of the tiem when I close the lid or put the machine to sleep manually.
Now with Maverick (10.9), even this elaborate this trick does not work. Why the loss in compatability Apple? I've called applecare twice and the techs have not been able to help--and now are not responding or calling me back. Having to reboot my mac 3-4x a day is a major problem. Anyone have ideas for me?

  • Dual display, 2nd monitor displays 3 of everything

I have ran 2 monitors before with no problems. Useing the lastest nVidia drivers with a Ti4200 128 I get 3 displays of everthing I put on the 2nd monitor. What I mean is when I slide a window over to the 2nd monitor it shows up 3 times. The device manager shows 4 monitors, the primary (Hitachi 751) and 3 default monitors. It doesn't mention the 15" NEC monitor that is my 2nd display. I have tried to uninstall them, but they keep coming back. I have unpluged the 2nd monitor and rebooted, no luck. There probably is some check box or setting that I am missing in the nVidia control panel.
I sure need some help,Thank You ..... VRB

    Hi,
This is probably NOT the answer, but if all else fails...
I've encountered problems when connecting an LCD monitor to the VGA output of a video card which is primarily set up for PAL TV out - so the Vertical and Horizontal rates on the VGA are presumably derived from the PAL H & V rates (50Hz and 15625Hz - the latter might be doubled on the VGA). Anyway, most of the LCD screens I have tried in this combination give multiple horizontally displaced images. On the other hand, CRT (picture tube) monitors generally seem OK.
So you could try changing the refress rate or resolution of the 2nd output, and see if it makes a difference.
Having said that, I think the problem is more related to the way your system thinks there are 3 extra monitors attached - in which case I haven't a clue  :(
    Good luck!

  • IPod 2nd gen. display lights up but

it will not display any words. Its almost impossible to find the song you want. It still plays the music it just wont show any words. Once I turn it on it lights up for about 4 or 5 sec then goes off & you just have to play with buttons from memory to play your music. Any help??

Is it really a 2nd gen iPod?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353
The 2nd gen iPod is the one without the standard +dock connector+ and had a FireWire port instead.
If you have not done so already, reset the iPod.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If that does not work, use the Restore button in iTunes on the iPod's pane. This will erase the songs on the iPod, so you will need to re-sync it.
If those procedures do not work, or if you already tried it, please post back.

  • 2nd 2600xt displays no video

I purchased a 2nd 2600xt video card off ebay to get a 3rd monitor on my 2008 Mac Pro. When I install it in the x16 slot I get a PCI error in sytem profile. When I install it in the x4 slot the computer act like there's 3 monitors but I don't get a display. Monitor doesn't get signal from the computer. I contacted the person I bought it from and he said it came out of a 2010 Mac Pro. Should that prevent it from working on my 2008 since it's from a 2010?

Cool. Thanks. I already messaged the person I bought it from and he'll give me a refund. I'm definitely going to mail it back today now. Thanks!! I figured it was bad but just wanted to make sure there wasn't a compatibility issue. I even tried the video card as the only video card in the computer and it didn't work that way either.
    Thanks Again!!

  • 2nd external display no longer being recognized after updating to Yosemite

using a 2 yr old Macbook Pro 15 with 2 external monitors. No prior issues when I was using Mavericks but since switching to Yosemite yesterday, I've not been able to get the system to recognize the 2nd monitor. I've restarted the system several times and still nothing. I've also checked all connections and made sure everything was secure. What can I do to resolve this issue???

Anyone have any help or suggestions? Thanks

  • 2nd ATV displays black screen and apple logo on initial start up

I just hooked up my 2nd ATV and all I am getting is a black screen with the apple logo. I am using component video and composite audio. No HDMI hooked up. 1st ATV is unplugged. Also have network cable plugged in for now. Using timecapsule for wireless network. This is a second hand ATV, so it has been previously used and configured. I also attempted to hook up using an HDMI, but same result. I am not sure if the unit is trying to find the previous users network or not. The amber light flashes indicating start up. Nothing else on the screen, no question mark, rotating circle, just the logo. Every few minutes the screen goes blue (assuming it is my TV default colour) and then returns to the black screen and logo. I am on the correct TV input. Also tried, menu + '+' and menu + - on the remote for factory restore and screen settings.

    melbri wrote:
I hope you are reffering to the possibility that the person I purchased the unit from may be a thief. I am working with him at the moment and building up to getting my cash back so he can deal with Apple. Thanks.
Sorry if my comments were misunderstood, I wasn't suggesting anyone was a thief, I was suggesting that without a receipt the store couldn't/shouldn't rely on the serial number to exchange/refund the tv, as proof of purchase.

  • My ipod 2nd gen display problem

my ipod nano display faild but playing.display only not working.. so plz solve the problem

You may have a hardware problem. To rule out a software problem try the following:
    - Reset. Nothng will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore rto factory defaults/new iPod
If still problem time for an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store

  • 2nd Display for iMac

hey! i know i can use my imac as a 2nd (mirrored) display and that's cool. I would like to see everything on my TV and I know it has the port for it, but the problem is my mac is like 25 ft from my tv. does anyone know if there's a wireless solution to this? not like apple tv or anything, i want to be able to see everything on my TV, not just media. Sorry, but I couldn't really narrow this down during the search. Thanks!

Just spent 45' on a live chat with Apple support, who answered my question: it can't be done. The MBA is not able to be used as a secondary display as I had intended. The other way around, so using the iMac's display as a secondary one for the MBA does work.
Hope this helps somebody to avoid the mistake I made.

  • 2nd display in iMac-style?

    Hi all,
    i would like to add a 2nd 20" display to my 20" Alu-iMac.
Has anybody seen a display, which is very similar to the iMac-display? The same height
of the stand, aluminium-design and so on, too?
Do the ACD have the same height, so that you could place the without any problems side
by side? I similiar design would be very nice.
    Any suggestions? :o)
    Thanks a lot!

The Apple Cinema Display is probably going to be the closest aesthetically to the iMac though the overall height is not going to match up. The 20" ACD has a total height of 15.9" and the 20" iMac 18.5". You could get a different brand LCD that has a height adjustment but it probably won't match the brushed aluminum look as well. You might just try and find something to sit it on to make up the height difference.

  • Using an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?

    Hi all,
is it possible to use an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?
I guess it depends (if at all possible) on the models, right?
Would it be possible with two of the currently available iMac 27" models?
Is it just connecting the two video jacks with a cable? That would mean that the jack is input AND output connector at the same time: the video signal would be output from iMac 1 and serve as input for iMac 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Stefan.

Awesome, David! Thank you! That helped a lot!
Additional question: because running applications on the target-display-mode-iMac keep running: will I be able to connect from the source iMac to the target-mode-iMac via OS X's Share Screen functionality? So that I can still USE the 2nd (target-display-mode) iMac for running applications and accessing them? Or is the iMac in target display mode really just a dumb display? Will ssh'ing to it work?
A little background: programs like Cubase and Logic work really great with two screens. Additionally, some audio plugins really need a lot of CPU power and some of those can actually distribute the number crunching via the LAN to other computers. So my thought is: run Cubase on iMac #1, use iMac #2 as a 2nd screen (will work, thanks to David's reply) AND use iMac #2's CPU, too, to help some Cubase plugins' number crunching. Would that work?
    Thanks a lot,
    Stefan.

  • AGP vs PCI for 2nd display

I am considering upgrading my set-up to include a 2nd 17" LCD display.
Can anyone tell me how bad of a performance hit I'll get by getting my 2nd ADC port through a PCI card? Will I actually see a lag between the PCI-fed and the AGP-fed displays?
Is there even a PCI card with direct ADC out for the G4? Or is the DVI-to-ADC adapter the only way to get ADC? (In which case, it's probably better to just upgrade the AGP card.)

Thanks. That clears things up quite a bit.
For anybody else considering adding a 2nd ADC display to a Quicksilver with GeForce2 setup, here's some of the info I've collected on various configurations including rough eBay prices:
    a) Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 128MB AGP + 1 DVI-ADC adapter runs about ~$200.
    b) Radeon 9000 64MB AGP + 1 DVI-ADC adapter runs about $160.
    c) Radeon 9200 128MB PCI + 1 DVI-ADC adapter runs about $180. But you can't sell your GeForce2 AGP card.
    d) OEM Radeon 9600 AGP (from G5s) + 1 DVI-ADC adapter runs about $120 for 64MB and $200 for 128MB. But requires modifications (with tape) to work and (with solder) to run power to the ADC. Some sellers are offering modified cards for an additional $50 or 60 but without the power modification.
    e) Radeon 9600 Pro Mac Edition 256MB + 2 DVI-ADC adapters runs about $360.
Options a, b and c will not support Core Image, while d and e will.

  • [Help!] A problem with the display of my GE60 2PE Apache Pro

I just got a new GE60 2PE Apache Pro and this is my first msi laptop I've ever had. I don't know what's seem to be the cause of my msi, but the display is always black and kind of glitchy at first when I just start it up.
The msi logo and the Windows 8's blue flag is also displaying fine, but after that on other Windows 8 OS, it's suppose to show the password screen. But instead, it's just black with several glitching white color. It's solved after pressing the windows button + P, which is supposed to control the dual monitor settings. After that, I checked on the display settings in the control panel and my device manager it's like this:
From the display settings and device manager, it seems that I kind of like have two monitors installed in my msi. It looks like one monitor for my Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600, and the other one is for my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M, although I don't know which one's running which. And it seems like the default display screen on my msi is the 2nd monitor (See from the display settings in control panel) because the 1st monitor is like plain black or acted like a projector in which I can either duplicate, extend, or turn it off using the PC Screen Only option when I press the windows + P.
But thinking back to every time I turn on my msi, the screen is black and I have to press windows + P to be able to actually see the display. Does this mean that every time I turn the PC on, the monitor is running the 1st one while the actual thing is running in the 2nd screen?
Is there any way to fix this so every time I turn it on I don't have to press windows + P to actually see the display? I'm having trouble because sometimes pressing windows + P doesn't work and I have to restart again using the power button to try and see does the windows + P will work the second try. Please help

Delete, remove, uninstall, whatever term you'd like to use for getting rid of it from your device manager.
Disabling it won't help, it'll still be there.
Judging by what I'm seeing, there's an extra entry for a monitor and it's most likely the issue that's causing your screen to misbehave.
Okay, so here's an update about the current situation:
I did gather up the courage to uninstall both Generic PnP Monitor from the Device Manager. Everything seems okay after I uninstalled it, the screen is not off, it's just as before. After I uninstalled both monitors from the Device Manager, I tried to see the Display Settings, but it is still showing two monitors (With the 2nd monitor displaying my actual screen and the 1st is plain black). I thought maybe it has to be restarted for it to take effects. So I shut it down, and boot it again (Because so far just doing a normal restart won't occur with the black screen. The "shut down and boot" is how do the black screen occurs again.) I really hope that the problem is fixed, but it's still the same. Showing the black screen with some glitching white stripes, and I have to press the Windows + P to get to the actual screen again. After I look up the Device Manager again, here's what's shown:
The Generic PnP Monitor showed up again! And it's two of them. So is there any other solution or any idea of what's causing this?
Thanks for all the help so far.
