Hello,
I'm looking for an Industrial Laptop, which supports NI ExpressCard 8360 with NI PXI Chassis(8 & 18 slots). we have tried with couple of laptops(HP ProBook & Dell XPS), which has the follwing issues:
1. Booting (This could be fixed by changing the booting order)
2. Digitizer module freezes (when the number of samples are above 60000)
3. Unable to detect all the available PXI modules
Please suggest me a right model.

MXI-Express Setup and Compatibility Guide
To address your issues:
1. Booting (This could be fixed by changing the booting order)
What is the problem you have with booting? Will the laptop not boot when your NI ExpressCard 8360 is connected? There is some information regarding this on page 1-3 of the MXI-Express x1 Series User Manual.
“The BIOS of some host machines may not support the extension of the PCI-Express fabric or PCI bus. Since this is the primary function of MXI-Express x1 products, those systems may not boot or function correctly. To address this issue, certain MXI-Express x1 products have additional functionality intended to hide all PCI or PCI-Express resources that are connected to the host machine, and allow NI MXI-Express BIOS Compatibility Software to handle the enumeration process of these resources instead of the BIOS.
In the cases where this software is required, there may be a dip switch on the board that needs to be toggled as instructed by the documentation for the software. The functional block diagrams in this chapter illustrate the locations and availability of the dip switch package. Only the first dip switch in the package is used for this purpose. The other switches serve no function and should be left in their default position.”
After knowing this, I would install NI MXI-Express BIOS Compatibility Software found here.

Do you have any other systems to try the same card in?
3. Unable to detect all the available PXI modules.
A low maximum limit on the bus number range set by the BIOS, which limits the amount of hardware that can be attached to the system could have something to do with this. Try this: Determining the Number and Range of PCI/PCI Express Root Bus Devices

Suitable laptop for video editing

for months now I am looking for a suitable laptop for video editing of my footage captured by Canon 60D (and also GoPro). Since it is in a HD quality and h.264 format it puts a great strain on the CPU. I already had to return an ASUS U30J and Dell XPS14 both with i7 processors because of their terribly slow performance :(. So now, I really want to be 100% sure that the laptop will be able to smoothly handle my footage. I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for video editing and I do need a laptop (preferably 15'') as I travel all the time.

I would like to ask you what do you think about this configuration regarding my requirements? Will this system be powerful enough to handle the h.264 footage? I would like to use both the SLR camera and the laptop as long as possible and don't have to change the laptop in one year time or so. That's why I would like the system to be powerful enough to withstand even future demands of the software, etc.
I was also not sure about the 500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid 32MB Cache (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s. Do you think it is a smart choice? Is the 4GB SSD memory of any use? Or should I rather go with the 750GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Buffer (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s)?
I don't have any previous experience with the raid system, do you think that the Raid 0 Stripe Enabled (Requires 2 or 3 Hard Drives. Combines Hard Drives for performance) is the right choice for smooth video editing? I know that I have to use at least 2 hard drives so that's why I'd rather order 3 HDD to get the best performance..
This configuration is worth 1800USD, I would obviously like to save some money as I will need to pay also the shipping costs, tax and duty (I currently live in New Delhi)... So if you think that something from the system might be downgraded and I would still get good video editing results, please let me know.

Frederick, I will firstly answer your questions, I am in no way a pro video editor, my projects are up to 10MB of size although I wasn't yet able to edit the h.264 footage properly ... I mostly do events and quite simple projects, effects, two to three timelines... I use only h.264, my older projects are in DV quality thought. I usually have to rush to finish a project since I have limited time during the travels.. I usually work at one, maximum two projects at the same time
Now, I have been trying to figure out what would be the best configuration for me and ended up with these two options, which are touching (maybe even overflowing) my budget... Both are worth around USD2100 (without shipping, etc.). Either I will be going for one SSD disk for the OS or for maximum CPU and RAM. Which configuration would you recommend me? Do you think that the second configuration is an overkill when taken into account the size and scope of my projects?

Frederick, regarding the RAM I checked the 8GB option and it comes in 2GBx4 so I won't be able to save those slots. Plus I have been searching for prices of the RAM, HDD and SSD in the US and they don't seem to be that great for me to even consider them... I would simply have to pay more and would end up with unused parts from the basic configuration. I think that the Xoticpc have quite reasonable prices of the upgrades they offer... Plus I can count on higher prices of the components here in India so all in all I think that it would cost me too much energy and save me minimum bucks... That's why I thought I might go for the 16GB RAM straight away if it isn't an overkill for me. As I said before, I would love to save money (after all I am a woman who controls the common budget) so please let me know, if I am just wasting money for high end technology which I won't be able to use . I rather think that in the future once I will finally be able to make some money when I will have a machine to work on, I might upgrade to better hard drives (SSD possibly). But right now I need a laptop on which I would be able to smoothly edit the HD h.264 footage.

Suitable Laptop for PXI-1033

I am using a PXIe-8360 with a PXI-1033 and am trying to find a laptop that is compatible with this system. NI states that not all laptops work with this configuration and has a list of laptops that do have been tested at (http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5035). This list is outdated and NI does not give any criterion on how to select a laptop that will work with this system on the webpage. We have purchased an Acer 5680 and it doesn't seem compatible. Is there a more recent list of laptops that are compatible?

National Instruments is actively testing motherboards and laptops so that we can comment on compatibility with our MXI products.

Laptop for an accountant, that travels quite a lot.

We are really lucky with costs and budget here, basically if we can justify the cost by production output etc, we are pretty much left to run our own budget, also the accountant that the laptop if for, is our immediate manager.

Hi, I have been asked to find a suitable laptop for the head accountant at our company.
The requirements are it has to be lightweight, ideally under 2Kg and it has to have a numeric keypad (not one of the built in ones you enable with the 'numlock' key as found on the smaller keyboards) a fully functional keyboard if you will.
I have found that to fall into the weight category specified, normally the screen is the first thing to be made smaller closely followed by the keypad removal, so this is not as simple as it first seems, if anyone knows of any laptops that may fall into this category could you please let me know, as all options at this point are good options.

Suitable styluses for my laptop

So i got a new laptop for my birthday, and this laptop has a touch screen, therefore as the title says I would like to see it's possible to get a stylus for mu computer or not, and if so what are so recommended ones? I would like to use it for drawing mostly so something very fine point would be great

What is the exact model of your laptop? Certain models are configured to work with an "active" stylus or pen, which would have a finer tip, more functionality, and require batteries. Most models probably won't work with a pen like that, though.
I've been using an Adonit Jot Pro a bit and I really like it -- it gives you a fine-tipped pen for detail work, but there's a little clear plastic disc where it makes contact with the screen (because a larger surface area is needed to register the touch -- a fine-tipped passive stylus won't work, unfortunately). It's a huge improvement over the big clunky rubber-tip styluses.

One of my more astute coworkers (a know it all, so he thinks, hehe), reminded me that we do sell a PCMCIA/Cardbus PXI Chassis controller and a ExpressCard PXI controller (if you have a computer with an ExpressCard slot).

If you buy a PXI controller for your Laptop, a PXI Chassis, and a PXI digital frame grabber, then you will have a system that allows you to grab images from your digital camera via your Laptop. If you have not yet purchased a Laptop, I highly recommend you purchase a Laptop with an ExpressCard slot (they have much higher bandwidth) which you will want for frame grabbing.

I need help with getting MAX to recognize my 1033 chassis and the associated cards. When I powered it up last time MAX recognized the DMM and the Freq Source but hung badly (hard reset of PC) when trying to use NI-Scope. Now I can't even get the chassis to show up in MAX. Please help me

When I look at Device Manager in Windows unders System I see "PCI bus" but nothing like PCI bridge to bridge. Not sure if I should or not...

Hi JD360,
As long as the Express card is working properly and you do not have MXI Compatibility Software installed, there should be a PCI-PCI Bridge in device manager. Sometimes this has a yellow bang next to it if it has not been recognized properly, but it should be there. Can you verify you don't have the compatibility software and double check the device manager to see if there is a PCI-PCI bridge?
Some more general quick questions to help troubleshoot:
1) What OS do you have?
2) What DAQmx version do you have?
3) In Windows Services, is PXI Platform Services started and running?
4) In Windows Services, is NI Device Loader started and running?

Laptops for Creative Cloud Apps

Before I get into trouble for high jacking threads again, has anyone recently bought a new laptop for Photoshop and other Adobe apps, or is up to date with the current state of play? My 19 inch Dell must be six or seven years old now. I has its maximum 4Gb RAM, a new HDD, and Windows 7, and has been stripped to bare bones, but it’s time to accept it has given its all, and time to replace it. The problem is, I am more or less clueless about what to replace it with.
Cost is not a huge issue, but I like to keep bang-for-buck in mind. I’ve wandered through several possibilities, and am currently thinking in terms of an MSI gaming system with this sort of spec:
17 inch full 1080 non reflective display.
I7-3630QM at 2.4Ghz (3.4Ghz turbo mode)
16Gb RAM (I can up this to 32)
GTX680 with 4Gb DDR5
Two 128Gb SSD in raid0
One 750Gb HDD (unknown spec)
3 off USB3
2 off USB2
1 off eSATA
HDMI
D-Sub
(it will drive three external monitors)
AFAIK I can only get it with Windows 8 — I would prefer Windows 7
Some of these gaming rigs have SLI’d graphics, which I obviously don’t want, so I’d like to make sure this one doesn’t?
This would cost me NZ$3000 (US$2335) I can get next generation CPU and graphics for another NZ$1000, but some of those options come with Quadro mobile graphics, which I believe are not ideal for Photoshop, Prem Pro, After Effects etc.
I would very much welcome feedback and advice before pressing the button on this.

I had found your earlier blog post while doing my research, but it was useful to read the second post, and I had a look at the Adrian Kingsley-Hughes Ultimate Photoshop PC post. (Is he serious going online with a name like that?!)
So it looks like I am going to fine with a quad core i7 at 2.4Hhz or faster, 16Gb RAM and decent nVidia graphics?
One thing you don't mention in your articles is raid0. I know from experience with my desktop NLE system, that it wouldn't run nicely until I added at least one raid0 as a project drive. I had originally used a single 2nd gen 10k rpm v'raptor to feed the video, and I was unable to scrub the timeline without stutter. Pairing a second identical drive in raid0 sorted that out nicely, and gave me lots of space to use it for current Photoshop projects as well.
So a lot of my thoughts have gone into how a laptop can best manage the multiple drive requirement, and I am leaning towards two SSD in a raid0, plus a larger HDD for data and non speed critical storage. I am up to five USB3 WD MyBook externals on my desktop, and they are surprisingly fast, so I can borrow one of these when travelling with the laptop.
Incidentally, I also have a 500Gb USB3 pocket drive that is powered via its single USB3 cable, and this falls well short of the WD MyBooks performance wise.
All in all, looking at the sort of laptops that come with coloured lights, brightly coloured cases with dragon emblems, and similar, I'd say we have a lot to thank gamers for. I am still unsure about Windows 8 though. It is starting to look like Windows 8 is OK if you stick with nVidia graphics, so my reluctance is just down to learning a new OS. But I see good old Stardock (I love Fences) has produced a Windows 7 like UI for Windows 8.

See if you can boot into single user mode with Command S.

How to create suitable aggregates for queries on multiprovider ?

goal reduce db time of query and improve performance
i have queries on a multicube. I have 5 cubes under the multiprovider. I having performance issue with one of the cubes. it had
high slection/transfer ratio. The same cube had high 94% DB TIme. All the BW and DB indexes and stats are green. I chose
the path of aggregates. when i tried suggest from proposal it is giving me query time and date range and i gave last
3 days and query time 150 sec. it is suggesting huge number of aggregates like 150 of them and not getting reduced much
when i tried optimize funcitonality.
The faulty cube had nearly 9 million records and 4 years of data
1. generally how many aggregates do we need to create on a cube?
2. how do i use propose from last navigation? it is not creating any aggregates
3. is there a way for system to propose less number of aggregates?
4. if nothing works i want to cut the volume of the aggregates base on years or quarters. how do i do that?
i created with time charactersitic 0calquarter and dragged in ocal day and 0calmonth. activated and filled in ..but
query is not hitting it when i do a monthly selection. i tried bringing in all the other dimensions...except line item
dimenisons....no use ...it is not hitting the manual aggregates in RSRT.the slection on 0calquarter is * .
5. should i change it to fixed value and bring in the line items too and create it?

In any of the menus of screen for creating aggregates you have an option for sytem propose aggregates for one specific queries i am not sure it worked with multicubes.

You should delete 0calday from aggregates in order to accumulate data for any greater time unit. Other solution for times is to study try to do a partition in cube.

Answered before, maybe you can create a query only with data on that cube that appears in multicube query in order to proposal any aggregate in thath cube.

is not recomendable create new indexes in multidemensional structures. Try avoid selections for navigational attributes, if necesary add navigate attributte as dimension attributes, put filters in filter section in BEX.

Not via Time Machine. It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT: And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port. Second TC not required.
