"suitable marker" troubles

I have a dual layer DVD project. The project has two tracks. Each track is 60 minutes long, 3.9 GB in size, and has no chapters (except for Chapter 1, ie: the start point).
I have done the build already. I'm unable to do the format because I keep getting the message saying "a suitable chapter could not be found in the layer break range".
I have referred to the manual, but can't find a way around it since I have no chapters in the tracks. I tried inserting various chapter markers near the end of each track, but no joy. I also tried adding a chapter marker at the end of each track and labelling it as the dual layer break point -- still no joy. I just keep getting the same error message each time I try to format.
I've read this forum looking for answers, and there is often a refrence to picking chapters from a pull-down list, choosing ones that aren't greyed out...but I have never come accross this pull-down list while working on the project.
Any help very much appreciated. Cheers.

Thanks for your reply Colin.
I only have the PDF Help manual - my physical copy of the manual is long lost.
Both tracks are identical in length and file size.
I've added plenty of chapter markers at the beginning of the tracks. Still I get the error message. Am I perhaps adding the markers incorrectly? Are they supposed to be added before the Build step, or after?
This project's video doesn't require any chapters at all - it's just ambient, back-ground type images, there's no plot to follow, and no fast-forwarding or rewinding required. I know what you mean, though, but in this case it would be pointless.

  • Help! suitable marker not found

Hello- I get an error that says "Suitable marker can not be found in the required layer". I'm using DVDSP 4, creating a dual layer dvd, set my break point as Automatic, and building my project as an .img. I have 5 separate tracks in the dvd. Any help?

    Hi pnicolas,
    Welcome aboard.
Suitable marker is in fact a place for the layer break. Unforunatly DVDSP at this stage doesn't offer you places where a marker could be placed.
The manual has some detail on approximating how to locate this position. But it does require you placing a marker in that position. And in this case you don't have a chapter marker in an eligible position.
If you are not so sure on the technique. Then you can estimate where you think the half way point in the project is either via a bit budget or using half way point of all your tracks etc. And then placing a liberal dose of markers in the area and do a test build to see if you get past your dialogue box.
    Cheers

  • Placing a Suitable Marker...

    Hi
I have a project with basically 2 files in them totally to 5.2GB, I tried burning the disc but I keep a formatting failed error message. "... A suitable marker could not be found in the required layer break range." I have referred to the manual and I just couldn't get it. I tried building the project first so that i can get the marker options laid out but it did not work. I went through my project folder's TSO and it did not work either. What would be the best way to do it?
The 2 files are about an hour long each of a show I am compiling for a client. I supposed I can make that 3 files per disc but it is still not working. Please advise.
    Thank you.

just select a marker in you track where you want the layer break to occur and check the dual layer break box in the inspector.

  • Suitable marker break point error for dual layer DVD!

I'm a new FCP user of a few months and DVDSP of one week.
I have read the manual again and again and I am still not sure how to add a suitable break point. I added a chapter marker and set it as a dual layer break point, not sure if that is correct. Quicktime Movie is 5.9 GB, it does everything except burn to DVD in SP. I can burn this movie in IDVD though. Please help me!
Thank you in advance for your help, I appreciate the assistance everyone so willingly gives. Thank you!

Will compressor or Mpeg cause degeneration of picture quality?
If you put it on DVD-Video, you have to convert it to MPEG2 (with either Compressor or by letting DVDSP convert it). It will lose quality as a result. The only way to minimize this is to use as high a bitrate for your MPEG2 file as possible. Compressor has some presets labeled 60 min, 90 min, and 120 min, that will allow movies of that length to fit onto a single-layer DVD.
You should probably re-read the opening chapters of the DVDSP manual; they cover this important and fundamental information relatively well.

  • ASP recordset quotation mark trouble

    Hello everyone,
I've got a recordset that pulls sales data based on a
    specific product that
is selected by the client from a dynamic dropdown of all the
    products in the
    database.
    The trouble:
If the product name has quotation marks in it, no results are
    returned.
If there are no quotation marks in the product name, results
    are returned.
I thought everything was going fine during testing, until I
    used quotation
marks in a product's name. The client enters the product

This product name works: The Gadget

    Thanks Matthew,
I had thought about &quot but that would actually make
for a lot of work in changing other parts of the application. It
would cause some problems with a couple of reports the application
generates and exports as far as naming conventions as well as order
confirmation emails and invoices that are automatically sent.
Also, I honestly would rather not have to tell clients they
need to enter code in. I've had a couple of folks who had very
little experience with computers. Showing them how to upload a
product image in a very user friendly admin section was difficult.
I can't image trying to explain why they need to enter code instead
of just typing The "Gadget" in the box that say's "Enter your
    product name".
Thanks for taking a look, and I actually have a less complex
app where that might work nicely :-)
    Take care,
    Tim

  • Where Should I Set the Layer Break Marker?

I am burning to a Memorex DVD+R DL media------
I received this error message when burning:
"Formatting was not successful. Layer 0 exceeds the
maximum layer size allowed. Please choose a suitable
marker location that will support this condition."
I placed one approx halfway through my main sequence, which
is a total of 4.6 GB, but I am still receiving this message.
Where should I place the marker so I can successfully output?
My total project is about 6.2 GB.

So you are telling me that I could delete the DNS from each machine and set it in either the new modem or Time Capsule router.
    That is correct!
I guess what I'm confused at is what device is doing what.
Let's look at a few examples, hopefully to help understand where all these protocols/services (PPPoE, DNS, & DHCP) come into play:
    Scenario 1: Modem > Computer
In this scenario, your ISP provides the DNS server IP address information to your computer via DHCP. DHCP also provides the other important IP address information: IPv4 address, subnet mask, & router IP to your computer in order to communicate on the Internet.
Since your DSL ISP requires that you are authorized to access their Internet service, they utilize PPPoE to pass your account credentials (username & password) from your computer to their authorization server. Once verified, you are granted access.
Scenario 2: Modem > Router (Actiontec) > Computer
In this scenario, your Actiontec router provides your account credential (via PPPoE) to the ISP and also acts as a DHCP server. As a DHCP server, it provides your computer with the required IP addresses and passes on the ISP's DNS IP addresses as well. You do have an option with this router to enter a different set of DNS IP addresses ... like those for Google DNS or OpenDNS if you do NOT want to use the ISP's DNS servers. In this case, the Actiontec, uses its DHCP server to provide those addresses to your computer.
Scenario 3: Modem > Upstream Router (Actiontec) > Downstream Router (TC) > Computer
Since you have the TC configured as a bridge, it is basically a "pass-through" device. That is, the Actiontec will continue to provide the IP addresses just like in Scenario 2 "through" the TC so that wired or wireless clients connected to the TC get the addresses. Also, like in Scenario 2, you can assign DNS IP addresses on the TC ... and these would be provided to clients connected to it.

  • Burning to a dual layer -error

Hi I am trying to output to a dual layer disc and am having some trouble. The error message I get is:
Formatting was not successful. A suitable marker could not be found in the required break range.
I have only ever output to single layer so this doesn't make much sense and unfortunately the manual didn't help me either.
There are about 10 individual tracks in my project - they wouldn't fit on a single layer, so I am using the dual layer.
What marker should I be using, can I put in on in DVD Studio Pro, and where should I put it -what 'break range'?
    Many thanks!

For anyone who is also having this problem, the key is to find a place on your disc that around the 4gb mark (approx.) and mark it as the dual layer break in DVD Pro.
You don't need to put a marker on in FCP, you can always do that in DVD Pro (Basically you set a manual chapter marker and select the Layer Break check box in the Inspector while that marker is selected).
Oh, and you can easily do this whether you have multiple tracks and one big track. If you have multiple tracks, just start working out the Layer Break area based on the order it tracks will played in.

  • Long Error Message when I burn to a DVD

I created a video in iMovie. Open the Packaged Contents and sent the .mov to compressor.
I set compressor to one of its preset DVD format: Best Quality 150 minutes.
Since the video is 2 hours and 45 mins - it took compressor 6 hours to convert to a MPEG2.M2V file along with an .AC3 file.
I then imported those 2 assests into DVDSP - green light since they are already rendered.
I checked the DVD Simulator and everything is perfect.
The final size of my video project says 4.3GB on the right corner of DVDSP.
If I use a standard 4.7GB Blank DVD - it tells me that it wont fit.
So I put in a Dual Layer Blank DVD. When it finishes I get the following message:
    Formating Failed
Formatting was not successful. A suitable marker could not be found in the required layer break range.
Please help me! What am I doing wrong?

Did you remember to set the option to allow DVDSP to automatically insert the layer break point marker? If not, go and do so. Otherwise, create a chapter marker just over the halfway point on your project and set it as the layer break point.
You might also want to check your preferences... in the track section, check 'fix invalid markers on build'. It shouldn't be an issue at the moment, but it won't hurt to do it.
You also ought to see how big those assets really are - calculate the combined file size using your finder (and not in DVDSP). If it is over 4.3Gb then either compress the footage again to a smaller file size (lower the data rate) or go ahead with your DL disc.

  • DL Break Point Issue - Please Help.

    Hello,
I use to work in DVDSP when you could only do one layer and even then I knew just enough to get the job done. Now I have a program that is 6.6 gigs total size (according to DVDSP) and I can't get this thing to find the break point. I have read through most of the manual regarding this issue and have read many posts - first I have to ask is why is this so difficult?
Here are the issues in detail and I ask that if you give input please guide me like I have limited knowledge in this.
I am using DVDSP 4.1.0 on a G5 Dual 1.8 OS is 10.4.8 with a Pioneer DVR 111D. I have 4 'tracks' all coming off one main menu...no sub menu's - so I have the one main and four buttons that go directly to the videos. When I try to 'burn' the DVD I get this error 'Formatting was not successful. A suitable marker could not be found in the required layer break range. See the DVD Studio Pro User's Manual for more information.' The size of each track is as follows:
Track One: The Main footage is 4.0 Gig (this is the one I am trying to set the break point because the limit is 3.9 Gig)
    Track Two: is 1.7 Gig
    Track Three: 606 Meg
    Track Four: 216 Meg
I have tried 'Automatic' without luck.
I have tried to place a few markers approximately 3/4 of the way through Track One the marker that I place is Green and in the Inspector window when I click on that marker I see the 'Marker Function' and then the button to select Dual-Layer Break Point and I select that only. However when I click something else and then come back to Marker the Dual Layer Break Point is not selected!
I then have gone into the 'Disc/Volume' and tried to select the 'Break Point' and chose Track One but still nothing. I have read in the forums about building the disc and then going into the TS folders and blah blah blah to get this done but that is above my head and I don't understand it.
I just need to get this video done. It is for a family who's 17 daughter was tragically killed and will be a fund raiser for them...I need to get this done. So if any of you are willing to help that would be SO appreciated AND if any of you would be so kind to walk me through this over the phone THAT WOULD BE GREAT! Just email me at [email protected] and I will email you my number. I know this is a tad different but I don't have much time left to get this done because of my 'real job' and again, I need to get this done!

    Hi csiaudio,
Build the project (AltAppleC). Then in the format window (Apple+F), Disc/Volume tab you'll be able to see the available break point markers. If they are all greyed out then you do not have one in the project.
Add Cell markers in places that you think would be ok as the layer switch. You do this by adding a chapter marker and then in the property inspector un-checking the type Chapter. This will now be a marker that can be used as a dual layer break point but is not a chapter marker.
You'll need to re-build the project and check the format window options again,
    -Jake

  • Series of problems

I am burning a 90 minute panel to dvd. I compressed it from FCP into MPEG-4. It comes out to about 700 MB. I have an 8.5GB DVD+R DL. Then when I Build/format, I get an error: a Suitable marker could not be found in the required layer break range. It shouldn't need a break if it's only 700 MB, not even close to 4GB.
    Message was edited by: ps_mankikar

DVD Video uses MPEG 2 compression. DVD Studio Pro is recompressing your MPEG 4 a second time to make it work. Not good.
Use Compressors DVD Best (or Fastest) Quality 90 Minute preset with 16:9 or 4:3 as appropriate. Select all, then delete the AIFF audio.

  • Is there an easy way to create 2 page imposed PDFs with a background?

I have figured out a way to create a suitable imposed single page PDF using the 'import as layer' action, the action only understands a single paged background PDF.
In other words, I have a PDF that has the suitable marks on it with the pages marked 'Page 1' & 'Page 2'. This is the background PDF.
I open this PDF in Acrobat and run the action that places another PDF (the 'Source' PDF) on multiple layers with different offsets.
The original (template) PDF is 2 pages & the Source PDF for imposition is 2 pages, and even though the 'import as layer' understands that the source PDF being imposed is 2 pages, it does not seem to allow the original (template) PDF to be seen as 2 pages.
There is a 'Target page number' option in the Preview area, but that is grayed out at 1.
So...other than commercial applications, is there an easy way to build a 2 page PDF imposition file??
    Maybe a script?

    Sabian,
Yes, the Quite software would be perfect, especially the 'Hot'. Tested & works great for us, but the price tag for the 'Hot' is rather steep for our relatively simple process......background template with a 'step & repeat' of the 'live' document.
As I mentioned in the original post, to do this with a single page PDF is simple enough using an action that places the 'live' doc multiple times, but the vast majority of our publications are 2 pages.
Currently runing the action twice for each job. I would save a bit of time if this could be automated to do both sides with one action, or one script.

  • Burn Problem with a 4GB project: "Layer 0 Exceeds"

First off this is not the usual Dual-Layer problem. I know all about Layers how they work and how to make them. Although the error I receive deals with DL my projects or nowhere near that size.
I recently had DVDSP 4 crash on me. Ever since than its been running really funny. The biggest issue I am having is that it won't allow me to burn a DVD 5. My projects usually range from 2.5GB - 4.5GB. Let me also say that DVDSP 4's Disc meter has always been a pretty good gauge as far as I am concerned. It's always been right on telling me if something was going to fit on a DVD 5 or 9.
My problem ever since the crash is that DVDSP will not allow me to burn a DVD unless the project is under 3.5GB. I have tried everything, including a Full Re-install of DVDSP. Every time I try to burn a DVD I get the following error message:
+"Formatting was not successful. Layer 0 exceeds the maximum layer size allowed. Please choose a suitable marker location that will support this condition."+
My latest project is dealing with a 4.4Gb (according to Meter) 4.32GB actually. It is impossible for me to burn a DVD because of the error message above. I can however run the project out on a Single DLT. How does that work?
Has anyone else had a problem like this? Does anyone have an suggestions?
I have checked all the obvious settings in DVDSP and all seem to be right. I can't figure this one out.

I've never had a problem burning a 4.4 disc on a DVD 5 until now. I actually went back to some of my previous project that were a DVD-5 and I am unable to burn those now too. Everything really got screwed up on that last Crash.
Yes. I am using AC3 audio.
I have not yet tried burning my DVD project through another program...but thats a good idea.
I usually burn a DVD and DLT for the replicators...but I know they prefer a DLT. What I find odd about all of this is that I am able to run out a DLT with no errors at all. It only seems to be on the DVD side.
In regards to the uninstall...I used the exact program. I am actually in the process of doing a full reinstall of FCP2 Suite.
I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • DVD DL with a DVD-rom part

    Hi,
With DVD SP 3.0.2, I'm trying to burn a DVD-DL, containing a DVD-video part (2,1 Go) and a DVD-rom part (4 Go). The layer is set to Dual and the Break Point is set to Automatic. DVD SP reports an error :
    "Formatting Failed.
Formatting was not successful. A suitable marker could not be found in the required layer break range. See DVD manual for more information."
I think that the problem is that the DVD-rom part is bigger than the DVD-video one, and a marker can only be on the video part. As layer 0 needs to be larger than Layer 1, the break point should be on the DVD-rom part. DVD SP3 seems unable to do this. Does further versions of DVD SP can do it ?
I also thought of burning with Toast, but I don't think that Toast will include the DVDaccess function. Am I right ?
If anyone as an idea that could help me...thanks !

Do you have any markers in the video towards the end of the video? If not try adding one and seeing if that helps.
How big is the video? (size) Did you do a build? You could also add/duplicate the track and add chapter markers in there to force things if needed.
Take a look at these threads, there are others but this should help..
