Suitcase or FontExplorer?

Having just upgraded all my graphics apps auto-activation in FontExporer X no longer works.
I had been using Suitcase since the System 7 days but when I upgraded to an Intel Mac I thought I'd give FontExplorer X a try as it was free.
So I can either buy the Pro version of FontExplorer or upgrade to Suitcase Fusion 2. Here in the UK there's only a couple of £s price difference at the moment.
So... what is everyone here using? Any serious issues with either management utility that I should be aware of before making a choice?
Apologies in advance if this is an inappropriate question for this forum...

Artworker, I've always liked Suitcase, but I absolutely love Suitcase Fusion (though I have not yet upgraded to SF2). I have no experience with FontExplorer or FontAgent Pro.
Yes, you still need both the screen fonts and the printer (outline) fonts for PostScript fonts to work properly. TrueType fonts and the newer Adobe OpenType fonts are the ones that consist of single files. OpenType fonts have many wonderful attributes including complete cross platform compatibility with Windows and MacOS, and the availability of many more glyphs per font than traditional PostScript fonts.
Yes, Suitcase Fusion will let you see and/or edit the contents of font suitcases within the application, though not within the Finder.
Yes, Suitcase Fusion (or more precisely, FontDoctor, which is included with Suitcase Fusion) will identify missing PS screen or printer fonts, as well as reunite them if they are present on your system but in different locations. FontDoctor will also purge font caches, which can become corrupt, sometimes causing font rendering problems or failure of certain applications to see active fonts. (By the way, font cache corruption should not be confused with the garbled text you might sometimes see in Apple applications such as Mail and Safari. This is typically caused by Helvetica PostScript being active. Turn it off, or better yet, remove it, restart your application, and the problem will be resolved.) Use Apple's Helvetica.dfont or, better yet, Adobe's Helvetica OpenType instead, or just load Helvetica Postscript as a temporary font in Suitcase whenever you need it.
Suitcase Fusion also uses a technology that Extensis calls FontSense, which precisely identifies fonts, even those with the same name, to ensure that only the exact font called for is activated.
Suitcase Fusion will give your font library an extra measure of protection from corruption by storing it in its own font cache called the Suitcase Vault.
Suitcase Fusion will manage your System fonts, ensuring that they remain available to the system as needed, but allowing the preferred PostScript or OpenType versions to take priority over Apple's OSX TrueType dfonts.
Extensis cares enough to detail the best practices in font management by regularly updating their free PDF publication, Best Practices for Managing Fonts in Mac OS X, available at http://www.extensis.com/en/downloads/document_download.jsp?docId=5600039.
And no, I do not work for Extensis. Rather, I manage and troubleshoot font issues as part of my job, and have never been disappointed with Suitcase Fusion.
I would also agree with Neil's suggestion to download trial versions of various font managers for testing. Best of luck to you in your search for the best font manager for your needs.

  • Cannot see suitcase fonts

i can only see type kit fonts after installing extension manager???

    Hi Sara,
I'm sorry that you ran into trouble with this. Some users have reported an issue in the current version of InDesign and other CC apps which can temporarily deactivate installed fonts. Please note that this is actually unrelated to Typekit; it just happens to occur at the time you see our logo in the missing fonts window.
The InDesign and app teams teams are still investigating the factors which trigger this situation, but the basic issue is this: the Missing Fonts dialog causes fonts which are managed through Extensis Suitcase and FontExplorer to not auto-activate correctly, or for managed fonts to even be visible in the application after upgrade.
In both cases, the Missing Fonts dialog appears to override the Font Management tool dialogs that allow users to manage fonts within the Application.
If you use Suitcase Fusion, there is a simple configuration change needed:
    1. close the Missing Fonts window
    3. go to the Type menu and select "Suitcase Fusion 5".
    3. From the submenu, choose "Library" and then check "All Libraries" so all fonts can be auto-activated as needed
    4. from the Type menu, select "Suitcase Fusion 5" again, and then "Check Document’s Fonts" to activate the missing fonts,
If the font is being managed by Suitcase, it will find and update the fonts.
In FontExplorer, if your managed fonts are not visible in InDesign after upgrading to InDesign 9.2
    Go to FontExplorer/Tools and select
    1. Clean System Font Caches (this will require a system reboot)
    2. Clean Application Font Caches
On non-Mavericks systems, you will need to de-activate and then reactivate font protection.  Launch a terminal window and enter
    sudo atsutil fontprotection -off
    Then enter
    sudo atsutil fontprotection -on
Relaunch the app. your managed fonts should now be visible and auto-activation should work.
The fonts can always be activated from within the Font Management software itself, even with the missing fonts dialog open.
The InDesign and other app teams are looking into the issue to determine the root cause as well; our apologies for any inconvenience it causes in the meantime.

  • How can I turn off the Typekit font check when opening files in InDesign

Adobe InDesign CC, Version 9.2.1 x32
    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Every time I open an existing file in InDesign which is using a font I have installed on my PC I get the following message:
"No matches were found on TypeKit, click "Find Font" to replace with fonts that exist on your computer"
I'm able to click on Find Font and then select the font that TypeKit is unable to find - can I stop it checking for this as I have the font installed on my local machine?
    Many thanks.

  • Illustrator CC crashes while saving anything.

I am a graphic design student in college in my last semester and I have many projects invovling Illustrator I need to get done. Since a few weeks ago, both my Illustrator CS6 and CC have been crashing only when I save my progress. I have since uninstalled the CS6 and only have the CC version, but I go to save anything and it tells me Illstrator has stopped working and shuts down every time. I need these projects saved for Monday. Does anyone have any advice for me?

You should know if you have installed plugins?
In your description I see 4 different possible causes (there might be more):
    - preferences are corrupt.
    rebuild them
Jacob has a problem solving link for that:
See "Move the folder" on this page: http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html
    - the missing printer. Illustrator saves this information into the file and if the printer is missing next time you open the file, you might run into trouble. Same if there's no printer or no printer driver or driver and printer not matching. See this one: http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/troubleshoot-problems-printing-non-postscript.html (step 8)
    - corrupt fonts.
You need to check them. Or simply uninstall every non-standard font and see if it works.
    - a font management application such as Suitcase or FontExplorer.
Illustrator simply doesn't like them all too much.

  • Disable typekit prompt?

Any way to disable the typekit prompt? I'm referring to the dialog that pops up when opening an doc in illustrator or indesign. 1 out of every 5 times it freezes. It won't allow me to click on 'close' or 'find fonts' and the only way out is to force quit the entire program. If I forgot to save a document in another tab - I lose my work.
I keep thinking I might get an update that resolves the issue. I can't be the only one this is happening to.
Very frustrating. I already use another font management program, don't need typekit. Definitely don't need it if the dialog's going to freeze. I own fonts from other foundries so using typekit isn't an option.
    Thanks for any wisdom.

  • Font conundrum

    Hi
i am having problems with some fonts not showing up in fontbook. these fonts, helvetica condensed, are postscript type 1 fonts. i also have the suitcase fonts to go with them. everything is in my library fonts folder (the hard drive location, not user)
so, why won't font book display or open these?
    thanks
    patti

Yes, you can use Windows TrueType fonts in OS X.
Is there another easier way to not have all those fonts show up in my app menu?
Yes, by removing any you don't need from the system. You can find which fonts you must have in my article, Font Management in OS X . All others can be removed, or moved to a different location.
There are greatly better font managers out there than Font Book. I'd delete if from the hard drive and use either Suitcase Fusion, or the free Font Explorer X.
do all those fonts in the library need to be NOT in folders - like can i catagorize all my helveticas, garamonds, etc. or do they not work if they are in folders?
No, but the only way to get back to that kind of organization is to stop using Font Book, since it always copies every font you activate with it to either the /Library/Fonts/ folder, or the Fonts folder in your user account at ~/Library/Fonts/. With either Suitcase or FontExplorer X, you can activate fonts in place. That is, from wherever they are on your Mac. Nothing gets copied to a Fonts folder.

  • I cannot activate my fonts in Lion using Fontexplorer 3 or Suitcase font fusion

I installed 10.7. I cannot activate any of my non systems fonts using FontExploere Pro 3 or Suitcase Fusion 3. Has this happened to someone else?

I added my fonts into the Fonts folder in InDesign CS 5.5. I can now see and use the fonts in Fusion. Fusion has also updated their  software to be Lion compliant.

  • CS5/CS6 Illustrator suitcase font problems

We have been having incompatibility issues with Suitcase fusion 3 and Illustrator CS5 from months now. Now Illustrator CS6 has launched, we are having the same issues.
Upon startup we load all our suitcase fonts then open Illustrator CS5, We also have to have auto activation turned completely off as it is too unpredictable. I would say 40% of the time fonts will load correctly and no issues will occur. The rest of the time the fonts load but in Illustrator a warning message is displayed when a text box is clicked:
'This text was created in a different version of Illustrator. Editing the text may cause some changes to your text layout. Basic formatting will not be affected. Do you want to continue?'
If the message is clicked 'OK' the text will reflow and the text box will bust with a small red plus symbol in the bottom right hand corner
If I quit Illustrator without saving and reopen, the message will not be displayed and no reflow will occur.
So its as if Illustrator cannot load the fonts from Suitcase correctly 100% of the time the first time it is opened.
Also if the document is saved when the fonts are not loaded correctly the error will be saved into the document, meaning any other Mac that opens that file, regardless of the fonts they use, will have the error appear.
Does Adobe have a fix for this? Is Suitcase fusion 3 incompatible with CS5+6?

Maybe not the most helpful answer but I stopped using Suitcase years ago and moved over to Linotype's FontExplorer.  The decision was based on similar issues to the one you're having.  I remember always having to open documents, then close them, then reopen them in order to get the fonts to activate.
Since you're not using activation, I have no idea why a font that is supposed to be open is not recognized by Illustrator until after restarting Illus.  It's possible that your font caches are corrupt, you can easily clean them to see if that's the issue.  Doubtful since you seem to indicate that it's affecting multiple machines, but you never know.
What version of Illustrator were the files created in?  There was a change to the type engine with, I think, CS2 that would cause that warning to come up, but even that wouldn't explain why it would only come up once.
I don't know that anyone here is still using suitcase, most having moved to Font Agent Pro or FontExplorer but maybe someone will chime in.

  • Life after Suitcase Fusion. How do I install a font manager to Tiger?

I just rid my Dual Processor G5 Power Mac w/ Tiger 4.7 upgraded system (gasp) of Suitcase Fusion, (say no more). I need to install Font Agent Pro 3 or FontExplorer X.
However, I'm green at the thought of reintroducing another font manager. Do I shut down Font book? I've read that no font manager should run side by side with font book, or any other font manager. I'm still suffering a little PSD.
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Running Adobe Creative Suite

I guess my real gripe is that why? would Apple remove a feature from the OS that was there for more than 15 years...
A very good question. There are a lot of pre OS X features that have slowly worked their way back in, such as spring loaded folders. But why this feature still hasn't reappeared this far into OS X's development is puzzling and frustrating.
I'd never heard of Font Smasher before, so looked it up and downloaded the demo. Being from the same folks who produce Font Agent Pro, it's probably pretty nice software. Rather pricey though at $49 for a single usage application. Especially for someone in your position who would have to purchase more than a few copies in order to spread them around the shop. I'll stick with using Font Doctor for now since I already have it.
But yes, it drives me a bit nuts that we still can't do this as easily as we could in OS 7 - 9. A copyright issue Apple had to conform to? Not very plausible since we could do this up until OS X. About all you can do is give Apple feedback and ask that we get this function back. I'm sure you know as well as I some of the mishmashed suitcases clients send that need to be cleaned up in order to use them.
The need to do able to get into font suitcases will be around for a long time, so it's not a minor thing.

  • Error "FontExplorer X Pro could not be found."

I installed a trial version of FontExplorer - hated it (I guess I am always gonna be a suitcase designer) and uninstalled at the end of the month.
Now I have this "residue" error in a ton of PSD files: anything that I opened when I had the dang thing. Here's the kicker... I don't just get it once - nope. I get that little errror window 3-5 times each time I open the PSD. And it likes to freeze for 5-35 seconds in between each.
It's driving me INSANE! IT's BEEN MONTHS! and I still have these files that pop up - a lot! I did a ton that month!!
I have tried CC Cleaner and googled the crap out of it - but have never found anything.
So, is there a way to clean the file?
ooh! or maybe a way to quickly duplicate all layers at once into a document of the same dimensions? for you PSD geeks out there.
    Help! Me! Please!
    angieO

It wasn't a separate install, and I have uninstalled the program multiple times. I honestly can't find it under Extentions for Photoshop...
    it lists:
    Adobe Exchange
    Extensis
    Kuler
    Mini Bridge
but nothing to uninstall... I know that InDesign CS4 and previous versions installs componant stuff .... to the files when you have an extention installed. These would cause some error messages upon open. An example would be the Quark to InDesign Extention that allowed you to open Quark files right up. But the file would open.
I guess I am wondering if FontExplorer installed an extention that left some sort of *gunk or whatever on the file level that I can delete.
OR like I said if there is a way in Photoshop to quickly copy all the layers at the same time so that I can recreat the docs in a "clean" file.

  • Issues with Adobe CC 2014 and Suitcase Fusion 5 New Release

I have recently downloaded Adobe CC2014 and am having issues. I have done an uninstall and clean re-install of the latest version of Fusion 5 and still have the same errors/issues. I also did a clean uninstall and reinstall of my CC2014 applications but the issues persist.
    They are as follows:
In Photoshop CC2014: The Extensis Plug-in could not locate a running copy of the FMCore application. Auto-activation plug-in functionality will be disabled.
Auto-Activation not working in InDesign CC 2014
Auto-Activation not working in Illustrator CC 2014
    I'm running a new MacPro
    Processor 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5
    Memory 12 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Everything worked perfectly until I installed CC2014.

You really aren't reading what we write.
    Let's break it down:
Suitcase isn't working with the new application versions, because Suitcase has bugs in it's code or just doesn't know about the new application versions.
The only way to fix that is to fix the code for Suitcase.
Suitcase is written by Extensis, so only Extensis can fix the code for Suitcase.
So you are waiting on Extensis to fix their code to work correctly with the new applications.
This is not about the CC 2014 applications, this is about Extensis code not working, and Extensis needing to provide an update to make their code work.
To get a working version of Suitcase (which requires fixing bugs in Suitcase), you need to talk to Extensis.

  • Can you help me with FontExplorer font activation problems?

Anyone know how to solve a font activation problem I am having with FontExplorer 4.2? I am on a new mac with new fonts, I am using Maverick with Adobe CS6. With my new mac I bought the latest version of FontExporer Pro X 4.2. This program is having trouble with font activation in all my Adoble suite apps including Indesign. Here is what I am seeing:
    1. The font activates, but the Adobe app does not recognize that it is active. If I go back to Font Explorer and deactivate manually, then re-activate manually. The adobe app might then recognize it. Sometimes it still doesn't. But this does not stay permanently, as soon as I do a restart I have to go through this process again. I see this more often with the User system fonts, but a few times with my regular fonts.
    2. Other times, such as in Indesign, I go to open the file and the file stalls and doesn’t progress while it is trying to activate the fonts.
    3. Another time I have seen after an illustrator file is opened the fonts aren't recognized as being opened and the text goes blank on the page.
    4. In all adobe apps, if I go to use "replace font" on the missing fonts (even though they are turned on) the "replace font" menu only shows the basic system fonts, it won't show me the other fonts turned on.
I have seen these issues with both formerly created files and fresh new files.
I have tried the following based on feedback from Font Explorer staff:
    Refresh your Spotlight database
    1. Quit all applications other than FontExplorer X
    2. Choose Tools > Refresh Spotlight Database
    Clean your font caches
    1. Quit all applications other than FontExplorer X 2. Choose Tools > Clean Application Font Caches (check all available checkboxes)
    3. Choose Tools > Clean System Font Caches (requires restart)
Still after trying this multiple times, the errors continue and even get more random.
I have also tried this based on their feedback:
go to FONTEXPLORER X PRO -> PREFERENCES -> ADVANCED and make sure that "Automatically deactivate fonts which have not been activated by the system" is NOT set to never.
Then click on TOOLS and clean all font caches. Then reboot the system.
The auto-activation is using a new Apple technology (called Core Text), which unfortunately does not work correctly with some of the Adobe and Quark applications when keeping the fonts permanently activated. We are currently working on an update, and the next version of FontExplorer X Pro will fix this issue.
This has also not work. Can anyone help me?

Here is the official work-around for this problem.
    1. Locate "FontExplorer X Pro.app" in Applications
    2. Right-click on "FontExplorer X Pro.app" and select "Show Package Contents"
    3. Navigate to /Contents/Helpers/
    4. Double-click "FontExplorerXLauncher-3.app" or right-click and "Open" to launch it manually. This is needed only once, afterwards the plugins will work normally.
Please make sure you open the version with the "-3" suffix, the other one does not fix the problem.

  • Missing fonts in InDesign CS4 - even when 'open' in Suitcase Fusion 3

Hi all, I'm running InDesign CS4 on a Intel Mac Pro (tower), about 4 years old, running OSX Snow Leopard (all updates applied).
Using Suitcase Fusion V3 for font management.
I have a document that previously had no font issues at all.  Now when I open it InDesign throws up a 'Missing font' error.
I have the correct fonts installed and 'open' in Suitcase Fusion.
The font is available in Simpletext and Pages, but not InDesign and Illustrator.
The troublesome font was OK the other day and has been since it was installed.
I've not changed anything that I'm aware of... but now InDesign won't 'see' the font.
In the 'Find Font' dialogue box the 'Path' says it's 'Unkown or missing'.
InDesign can see the other weights in the font family (bold, italic etc) but not regular.  And yet the entire font family is in the same folder on my hard drive.
I've tried deleting all the' Adobe.lst' files.  No Joy.
I've run Font Doctor on the whole font family, its says it's OK.
    I've tried re-installing the font from a back-up.  Nada.
If anyone has any suggestions..... feel free to let rip!
As ever, I await your expertise and unstinting knowledge in these matters   And, needless to say, I'll be mighty appreciative for it!
    RP

Hi Bob, strangely... I've put the troublesome font, Dax (T1) Regular, in the Applications/Adobe InDesign CS4/Fonts folder and it seems to be working.
