Sun Cluster Tools and PBS/Torque support

I hope this is the right forum...
The Sun Cluster Tools 8.2 userguide says that PBS/Torque DRM is supported out of the box for OpenMPI and can be confirmed by issuing a command similar to:
ompi_info | grep plm
but I only get rsh and SLURM:
MCA plm: rsh (MCA v2.0, API v2.0, Component v1.3.3)
MCA plm: slurm (MCA v2.0, API v2.0, Component v1.3.3)
Is the doco. wrong? What do I need to do to get it going with Torque?

Does your ompi_info output the following line? The tm plm indicates PBS/Torque support.
MCA plm: tm (MCA v2.0, API v2.0, Component v1.3.3)

  • Sun cluster, 6140 and 'cross-connections'

This was brought up in the storage forum by somebody else, but the responses never answered the original question:
In the 6140 setup document located at http://docs.sun.com/source/819-7497-11/chapter3.html#50589714_93886 it shows two different ways to cable a host to a 6140 via a SAN switch. figure 3-3 and 3-4
It states that the setup in 3-4 is not supported in a sun cluster environment.
The problem is that given the acive/passive nature of the 6140, the setup shown in 3-4 is the obvious one to use since it prevents one from having to force all of the luns over in the event of an hba port or switch failure.
To make life more interesting, the 6140 setup doc does not make not of what version of sun cluster it is not supported on. Or what the bugid is, or any informationto know if the restriction is still valid.
So, does this restriction still exist? If so, for what version of sun cluster? What version of solaris?

    Thanks for the clarification.
As an aside, it would be nice if in the future, the documentation could contain a bit more information than just a simple note saying 'this is not supported'. A reference to a bugid or info doc would go a long way in helping folks determine if the restriction is still valid.

  • Sun Cluster 3.1 64 bit support  for Solaris 10

    Hi:
I have some questions when migrate SC 3.1 from solaris 9 to solaris 10.
    1) Does Clutster 3.1 for solaris 10 support 64 bit?
I have develop own resource type which is compiled with 64 bit mode, while cluster admin program is 32 bit based. E.g. /usr/cluster/bin/scrgadm
Will that cause any problem? For instance: 32 bit lib and 64 bit lib have the same name libscha.so will be loaded by 32 bit scrgadm and 64 bit my own developped resource type program.
    2) Can I download a Cluster 3.1 install-pkg for solaris 10, 64 bit supported., which means all admin files like scrgadm are 64 bit based.
Or only ONE Cluster 3.1 version for solaris 10 is deliveried by SUN?
    Thanks in advance!
    BRs
    //rdctahu

    Hi,
    Comments on your 2 questions:
    1) Yes. IIRC, SC31 for S10 actually supports ONLY 64 bit. To be clear, this means
Solaris has to be booted in 64 bit mode, but 32 bit applications would run just
    fine.
As for your RT being 64 bit, and scrgadm being 32 bit, no problem.
    2) See (1). You are good.
    Go for it.

  • Someone take my VISA!!! Sun JES strategy and SMB ==   need support.

    Hello --
I'm a VERY small company -- seven seats -- looking to license JES Communications Suite. Big thing: need official Sun support because components of JES 2005Q4 REQUIRE (!!!!!) tech support -only patches in order to operate with stability (reference: UWC threads in Messaging forum -- patches are required to product to work in production).
I spoke with Sun inside sales: guess use-license is FREE as part of promotion, but support is an entirely different matter (100 seat min).
Sun JES message: you can't get any Sun support on software unless you spend $5,000 (ie. 100 seat min -- JES Comm Suite with Standard suppot -- $50/head).
Surely, someone @ Sun marketing & product mgmt has head up darkness by essentially pushing SMB customer to "dark side" of Microsoft. A ten user company is not going to spend $5,000 year on email system.... period (not including hardware and datacenter).
    Summary from Sun:
"We'll give you the software for FREE -- but in order to run the software in production, you'll need to buy support for min of $5,000/year to get required patches."
    This strategy stinks. -GA
    ============ Info from inside sales.
So, let me throw out some numbers:
JES the entire package with support per year (minimum 100 employees)
    Standard support: $140 per employee
    Premium support: $150 per employee
Java Communication Suite only with support per year (minimum 100 employees)
    Standard support: $50 per employee
    Premium support: $60 per employee
There is no way to purchase support for under 100 employees, per the terms of the promotion for JES:
**Customers who wish to purchase support can purchase a commercial license for the Java Enterprise System, which includes technical support, updates and maintenance. Minimum number of units (employees) licensed is 100 under the commercial license terms. (pricing per above)

In addition to the subscription options, Sun also provides perpetual licenses for each individual component product. This might better meet your needs since you are using this for a very small deployment. If you expect your org to grow in size you could upgrade to a subscription model at a later date and take advantage of the unlimited RTU. Please contact Sun Sales to explore this option as well.

  • Does SUN CLUSTER WARE support ASM?

Does SUN CLUSTER WARE support ASM?
Where can I find the answer ? Thanks.

I am not an expert but here it goes. Sun Cluster is used for clustering machines processes but NOT really used for clustering disks. This has to be done through third party software like Veritas. BUT why Sun Cluster the machines when you can cluster via Oracle CRS? CRS then uses ASM for clustered disks. Bingo you save money on Sun Cluster Software and Veritas software.
One day Oracle will rule the world!

  • Sun Cluster and DS6 within zones

It is possible to configure the sun cluster agent for cluster 3.1/ 3.2 in a DS6.0 zone?
    It's supported?
    thank you.

Sun Cluster 3.1 u4 does support Zones for failover but as a blackbox ie failover of the complete zone.
I am not sure this will interact well with DS 6 Cluster Agent.
DS 6.0 has it's own Agent (SUNW.ds6ldap delivered in the SUNWldap-directory-ha package).
This package is available with JavaES 5 as part of the Cluster Agents bundle.
Now with regards to the documentation of the DS cluster agent and its use, unfortunately the only documentation is what I posted on my blog early March : <http://blogs.sun.com/Ludo/entry/directory_server_6_ha_with>

  • Does sun Cluster 3.0/3.1 HA Oracle agent support to use Oracle spfile?

When defining the resource, the 'parameter_file' properties is usually sets to the Oracle pfile. Is it possible to use Oracle spfile?
It is said if leaving 'parameter_file' NULL, it will be default to Oracle default. Suppose leaving it NULL and with Oracle spfile created in default location, will it use the spfile?

You did not specify which Sun Cluster version and Oracle version you are running.
Within SC 3.1 my understanding is that beginning with Oracle 9i it is possible to use the spfile.
If you leave the "parameter_file" property empty (NULL) then the default behaviour for 9i should work:
search under $ORACLE_HOME/dbs in the order:
    1. spfile$(ORACLE_SID}.ora
    2. spfile.ora
    3. init${ORACLE_SID}.ora

  • IDS 5.0 and Sun-Cluster

I want to make IDS 5.0 highly available using SunCluster. I have few questions about it.
    1. Can I install IDS on local disk and make it highly availbale. Sun-Cluster doc says it should be on shared disk.
    2. I have an already installed IDS I want to make it highly available using Sun-Cluster, what steps I should follow to achive this.

I suppose that the answer is that it is not a simple task and it depends on the kind of cluster you want to deploy.
I suggest that you carefully read the documentation of Sun Cluster and specifically the Directory Server specific parts.
The way to do it is different with Sun Cluster 2 and Sun Cluster 3.0....
Or you can request help from Sun Professional Services...

  • Sun Cluster Core Conflict - on SUN Java install

    Hi
We had a prototype cluster that we were playing with over two nodes.
We decided to uninstall the cluster by putting node into single user mode and running scinstall -r.
Afterwards we found that the Java Availability Suite was a little messed up - maybe because the kernel/registry had not been updated - it though the cluster and agent software was uninstalled and would not let us re-install. All the executabvles from /etc/cluster/bin had been removed from the nodes.
So, On both nodes we ran the uninstall program from /var/sadm/prod/... and then selected cluster and agents to uninstall.
On the first node, this completely removed the sun cluster compoenets and then allowed us to re-install the cluster software successfully.
On the second node, for some reason, it has left behind the component "Sun Cluster Core", and will not allow us to remove it with the uninstall.
When we try to re-install we get the following:
"Conflict - incomplete version of Sun Cluster Core has been detected"
In then points us to the sun cluster upgrade guide on sun.com.
My question is - how do we 'clean up' this node and remove the sun cluster core so we can re-install the sun cluster software from scratch?
I don't quite understand how this has been left behind....
    thanks in advance
    S1black.

You can use prodreg directly to clean up when your de-install has gone bad.
    Use:
    # prodreg browse
to list the products. You may need to recurse down into the individual items. The use:
    # prodreg unregister ...
to unregister and pkgrm to remove the packages manually.
That has worked for me in the past. Not sure if it is the 'official' way though!

  • DS6 in Sun cluster

    Hi
I am doing DS 5.2 migrate to DS6.1. I have DS5.2 and messaging server 6.2 in cluster environment. I am OK with migration process but how to replace existing ldap resource in cluster with the new setting. My messaging resource is dependent on ldap (5.2) resource. I would like to add new ldap resource in cluster and link messaging resource to new ldap while keeping my old ldap resource offline. Can any body guide me what to do and how?
    Thanks in advance

I believe you need to make a new Resource group for DS 6. Once it is up and running, it should be easy to change the MS dependency to the new RG.
I am not familiar enough with Sun Cluster dependencies (and I don't have a cluster running now) to give you the exact details. But it seems like just changing the name of the Resource Group MS depends on.

  • Regarding Building of Sun Cluster

I want to learn Sun Cluster in vmware , which is installed on top of windows xp 32 bit. I want to practice for sun cluster certification .Unfortunately i dont have SPARC. Whether is it possible to install a two node cluster in vmware ? I have shared iscsi storage ( open filer ). Shall u admins please guide me , which solaris version , sun cluster version, and other prerequisties to be taken for installation to proceed for vmware sun cluster configuration.
    Hardware : x86 - Intel Dual Core 2.5 ghz, ( not 64 bit emulated ), 4 GB RAM

VirtualBox allows you to run a 64-bit Solaris even on a 32-bit operating system, as long as your hardware is 64-bit. (Yes, you need 64-bit HARDWARE, and the starter of this thread cleary stated, that his hardware is NOT 64-bit!)
    See:
    http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/2.2.4/UserManual.pdf
    Pages 17-18...
BUT: You can officially use the OpenSolaris Versions.
Yes, they do have the 32-bit versions inside it!
With OpenSolaris 2009.06 it is as easy as this:
Just install OpenSolaris 2009.06 and add the packages from pkg.sun.com/opensolaris/ha-cluster
    See:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/prod/open.ha.cluster?l=en&a=view
    and more specifically:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-7821/gikpv?l=en&a=view
It's even easier then Solaris 10! There's no real technical difference between SC32u3 on Solaris 10 and OHAC for OpenSolaris. So, I highly do recommend to use OHAC on OpenSolaris!

I concur with Matthew.  The release notes for sun cluster and oracle for solaris might tell you.  oracle 9.2.0.8 is out of support on solaris and I recall needing a number of patches to get it to a fit state ... and that is without considering sun cluster.  Extended support for 9.2.0.8 ended about 4 years ago ... this is not a combination I would currently be touching with a bargepole!  You are best to seek on MOS.

  • Information about Sun Cluster 3.1 5Q4 and Storage Foundation 4.1

    Hi,
I have 2 Sunfire V440 with Solaris 9 last release 9/05 with last cluster patchs.. , Qlogic HBA fibre card on a seven disks shared on a Emc Clariion cx500. I have installed and configured Sun cluster 3.1 and Veritas Storage Foundation 4.1 MP1. My problems is when i run format wcommand on each node, I see the disks in a different order and veritas SF (4.1) is also picking up the disks in a different order.
    1. Storage Foundation 4.1 is compatible with Sun cluster 3.1 2005Q4?????
    2. Do you have a how to or other procedure for Storage foundation 4.1 with Sun Cluster 3.1.
I'm very confuse with veritas Storage foundation
    Thanks!
    J-F Aubin

This combination does not work today, but it will be available later.
Since Sun and Veritas are two separate companies, it takes more
time than expected to synchronize releases. Products supported by
Sun for Sun Cluster installation undergo extensive testing, which also
    takes time.

  • Does oracle clusterware and oracle RAC require sun cluster

    Hi,
I have to setup oracle RAC on solaris 10 SPARC. so is it necessary to install sun cluster 3.2, QFS file system on solaris
I have 2 sun sparc servers with solaris 10 installed on it and shared LUN setup(SAN disk RAID 5 partitions)
Have to have 2 node setup for RAC load balancing.
    Regards
    Prakash

    Hi Prakash,
    very interesting point:
As per oracle clusterware documents the cluster manager support is only for windows and linux.
In case of solaris SPARC will the cluster manager get configured ???
The term "Cluster Manager" refers to a "cluster manager" that Oracle used in 9i times and this one was indeed only available on Linux / Windows.
Therefore, let me, please, ask you something: Which version of Oracle RAC do you plan to use?
Because for 9i RAC, you would need Sun or Veritas Cluster on Solaris. The answers given here that Sun Cluster would not be required assume 10g RAC or higher.
Now, you might see other dependencies which can be resolved by Sun Cluster. I cannot comment on those.
For the RAW setup: having RAW disks (not raw logical volumes) will be fine without Veritas and ASM on top.
    Hope that helps. Thanks,
    Markus

  • Failover Zones / Containers with Sun Cluster Geographic Edition and AVS

    Hi everyone,
Is the following solution supported/certified by Oracle/Sun? I did find some docs saying it is but cannot find concrete technical information yet...
    * Two sites with a 2-node cluster in each site
    * 2x Failover containers/zones that are part of the two protection groups (1x group for SAP, other group for 3rd party application)
    * Sun Cluster 3.2 and Geographic Edition 3.2 with Availability Suite for SYNC/ASYNC replication over TCP/IP between the two sites
The Zones and their application need to be able to failover between the two sites.
    Thanks!
    Wim Olivier

    Fritz,
Obviously, my colleagues and I, in the Geo Cluster group build and test Geo clusters all the time :-)
We have certainly built and tested Oracle (non-RAC) configurations on AVS. One issue you do have, unfortunately, is that of zones plus AVS (see my Blueprint for more details http://wikis.sun.com/display/BluePrints/Using+Solaris+Cluster+and+Sun+Cluster+Geographic+Edition). Consequently, you can't built the configuration you described. The alternative is to sacrifice zones for now and wait for the fixes to RG affinities (no idea on the schedule for this feature) or find another way to do this - probably hand crafted.
If you follow the OHAC pages (http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/ha-clusters/) and look at the endorsed projects you'll see that there is a Script Based Plug-in on the way (for OHACGE) that I'm writing. So, if you are interested in playing with OHACGE source or the SCXGE binaries, you might see that appear at some point. Of course, these aren't supported solutions though.

    Tim
