Sun Cluster, ZFS, Oracle

Hi, I'm planning an installation of a Solaris Cluster 3.2 with 2 nodes and a Sun storage array 6140: can I use ZFS with Oracle? It's supported? Which is the best solution for soring datafiles? Do I have to install Volume Manager too?

Ron,
I may have misunderstood your question so I'll answer with perhaps more.
- You will need to use the resource type SUNW.HAStoragePlus to automate/manage the failover of the ZFS zpool between cluster nodes. Refer to the SUNW.HAStoragePlus man page for more info.
- The HA-Oracle data service will need to have a resource_dependency against the SUNW.HAStoragePlus resource you created earlier for the ZFS Zpool. Refer to the r_properties man page.
- When creating (or updating) the HA-Oracle data service the VALIDATE method will run on all cluster nodes, however because a SUNW.HAStoragepPlus resource is managing a failover (Zpool) file system, the validation on the cluster node where the Zpool in not imported will be ignored. Consequently, the validation will be successful.
The combined effect is that if the Oracle alert log is located within the Zpool then it will be available before the HA-Oracle data service attempts to start the Oracle database.

In our Sun Cluster 3.1 Data Service for Oracle RAC 9.2.0.7 (Solaris 9) configuration, my team had encountered
ora-29701 *Unable to connect to Cluster Manager*
during the startup of the Oracle RAC database instances on the Oracle RAC Server resources.
We tried the attached workaround by Oracle. This workaround works well for the 1^st time but it doesnt work anymore when the server is rebooted.
Kindly help me to check whether anyone encounter the same problem as the above and able to resolve. Thanks.

ORA-29701 DURING DATABASE CREATION AFTER APPLYING 9.2.0.6 PATCHSET

Customer applied 9.2.0.6 patchset over 9.2.0.4 patchset.
While creating the database, customer receives following error:
ORA-29701: unable to connect to Cluster Manager
However, if customer goes from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5 -> 9.2.0.6, the problem does not occur.
DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS:
It seems that the problem is with libskgxn9.so shared library.
For 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5 -> 9.2.0.6, the install log shows the following:

For 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.6, install log shows:

This means that while patching from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5, Installer copies the libcmdll.so library into libskgxn9.so, while patching from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.6 does not.
ORACM is located in /app/oracle/ORACM which is different than ORACLE_HOME in customer's environment.
WORKAROUND:
Customer is using the following workaround:
cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib make -f ins_rdbms.mk rac_on ioracle ipc_udp

my client is insisting on putting oracle RAC on top of sun cluster, the thing is i don't know what is the benifit of creating such an architecture, i tries to search on the internet but couldn't understand the benifits nor the advantage, Kindly if some one has implemented such an architecture to let us know the use and the benifits

Here on my environment, there is SUNCluster only for single instances. The Clusterware Oracle is complete providing high availability and load balance for your database, you don't need sun cluster with this case, no advantages gained. The only thing controlled by SUNCluster on my RAC environment is QFS (Cluster file system from SUN).

Migrating a Sun Cluster Running Oracle to New Hardware

Has anyone attempted this? Essentially we are moving a Sun Cluster from one location to hardware at another location while maintaining the same node names. From what I can tell, I need to (on an install lan):
1) Load the OS
2) Configure the IPs
3) Install Sun Cluster
4) Install Oracle Parallel Server/RAC
5) Restore the data on a per node basis
6) Restore the shared data
7) Adjust, tweak, and run
Are there any pitfalls or suggestions on the approach? The shop is relatively new to clustering much less oracle clustering and the original cluster was installed by admins gone bye.

I would say that Apple should be able to update your 36-months maintenance agreement with a OSXS 10.4 serial number.
As far as I know, the structure of 10.3 and 10.4 serial numbers is different (wasn't the case between 10.2 and 10.3) so I'm short of a technical answer here.
Maybe you could try :
/System/Library/ServerSetup/serversetup -setServerSerialNumber xxxx-xxx-xxx-x-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx-x
in a Terminal window on the server. It's theorically the same as using Server Admin but maybe this could help.

RAC: using Sun cluster or Oracle clusterware?

Going to build RAC on SUN machine (Solaris 10) and Sun SAN storage, couldn't decide how to build the foundation-----use Sun cluster 3.1 or Oracle clusterware?

Starting with 10g Release 2, Oracle provides its own and indipendient cluster management, i.e., Clusterware which can be used as replacement for the OS specific cluster software.
You can still use the OS level cluster, in this case, Oracle Clusterware depends on OS cluster for the node information.
If you are on 10g, you can safely, go with Oracle Clusterware.

When I use the logical hostname in the dataguard configuration and go and enable it I get
ORA-16596: site is not a member of the Data Guard configuration
I use the physical hostname works ok.
Has any one got around this

The release notes for sun cluster and oracle for solaris might tell you. oracle 9.2.0.8 is out of support on solaris and I recall needing a number of patches to get it to a fit state ... and that is without considering sun cluster. Extended support for 9.2.0.8 ended about 4 years ago ... this is not a combination I would currently be touching with a bargepole! You are best to seek on MOS.

Does sun Cluster 3.0/3.1 HA Oracle agent support to use Oracle spfile?

When defining the resource, the 'parameter_file' properties is usually sets to the Oracle pfile. Is it possible to use Oracle spfile?
It is said if leaving 'parameter_file' NULL, it will be default to Oracle default. Suppose leaving it NULL and with Oracle spfile created in default location, will it use the spfile?

You did not specify which Sun Cluster version and Oracle version you are running.
Within SC 3.1 my understanding is that beginning with Oracle 9i it is possible to use the spfile.
If you leave the "parameter_file" property empty (NULL) then the default behaviour for 9i should work:
search under $ORACLE_HOME/dbs in the order:
1. spfile$(ORACLE_SID}.ora
2. spfile.ora
3. init${ORACLE_SID}.ora

Sun Cluster 3.2, Zones, HA-Oracle, & FSS

I have a customer who wants to deploy a cluster utilizing Solaris 10 Zones. With creating the resource groups with the following: nodeA:zoneA, nodeB:zoneA, the Oracle resource group will be contained in the respective zone.
First create the Zone after the Sun Cluster software has been installed?
When installing Oracle, the binaries and such should reside in the Zone or in the global zone?
When configuring FSS, should this be done after the resources have been configured?

The Oracle biaries are not big at all, ther is not much IO happening at this fs, you can easily create a ufs file system for each zone, mount that via lofs mounts into the zone. Or you can create a zpool for the binaries. My personal take would be to include them in the root path of the zones an you are set.
You must install the binaries in all zones where your Oracle database can fail over to. To reduce the maintenance work in the case of upgrades I would limit the binary installation to the zones in the nodelist of your oracle resource group. If you install the binaries on all nodes/zones of the cluster you have more work when it comes to an upgrade.

SUN CLUSTER RESOURCE FOR LEGATO CLIENT (LGTO.CLNT) in Oracle database

I am tryinig to create a LGTO.clnt resource in oracle-rg resource group in SUN CLUSTER 3.2 with the following commands

I just need to know what is value of Owned_Paths variable in the above commnad?
or what PATH it is reffering to ( $ORACLE_HOME or Global devices path ...etc) ?

The Owned_Paths parameter are the paths (or mountpoints) the legato client will be able to backup from.
To configure a legato client in the Networker console (and to be managed as a cluster client) you need to declare the in the Owned_Paths the paths you want to save.
The savesets paths can be a directory under the Owned_Paths.

Multiple Oracle databases in Sun cluster 3.2 (without RAC setup)

There are 2 Sun SPARC (Sun Fire T2000) servers with Solaris 10 (05/09) OS and Sun Cluster 3.2 software. We need two different Oracle databases & instances (Oracle 10g R2 without RAC) for an application. The first database is for Production and need to be configured in the first node & Shared storage disk and need high availability. This database should run from the second node if the first node fails. The second database is for Quality/Test and it is prefered to be running in the Second node for better load distribution. This DB doesnt require any failover.
The shared storage is Sun SE 3510 FC and multiple LUNs can be created for different databases..
Is it possible to configure two different resource groups (one for Quality and other for Production) and make the first node primary for Production RG, and the second node primary for Quality RG and thus distributing the load on 2 servers ? If possible, what special configuration required in Sun OS and Cluster side ?
Appreciate if you can give some configuration procedures/documents for this multi-master cluster setup..

You can configure two resource groups, such as:
# clrg create -n node-a,node-b prod-rg
# clrg create -n node-b qa-rgand you configure the required resources (disk groups / file systems, logical host, oracle listener, oracle server) as described within

Note that this is not really called a "multi-master" configuration - that has a specific meaning for a resource group (see [http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/babefcja?l=en&a=view|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/babefcja?l=en&a=view] ) for details.
With Solaris Cluster all nodes part of a cluster are considered active and can host resource groups. You can have any number of resource groups running, where a subset runs one one node, another subset on other nodes. The nodelist property of the resource group defines where it can run, the first node in the list is the preferred primary.
You can even define resource group dependencies or affinities between the resource groups. Like you could define a negative affinity between qa-rg and prod-rg, such as if prod-rg needs to failover to node-b (since e.g. node-a died), it would offline qa-rg. I have 2 sun sparc servers with solaris 10 installed on it and shared LUN setup(SAN disk RAID 5 partitions)
Have to have 2 node setup for RAC load balancing.

As per oracle clusterware documents the cluster manager support is only for windows and linux.
In case of solaris SPARC will the cluster manager get configured ???
The term "Cluster Manager" refers to a "cluster manager" that Oracle used in 9i times and this one was indeed only available on Linux / Windows.
Therefore, let me, please, ask you something: Which version of Oracle RAC do you plan to use?
Because for 9i RAC, you would need Sun or Veritas Cluster on Solaris. The answers given here that Sun Cluster would not be required assume 10g RAC or higher.
Now, you might see other dependencies which can be resolved by Sun Cluster. I cannot comment on those.
For the RAW setup: having RAW disks (not raw logical volumes) will be fine without Veritas and ASM on top.

RAW disks for Oracle 10R2 RAC NO SUN CLUSTER

Yes you read it correctly....no Sun cluster. Then why am I on the Forum right? Well we have one Sun Cluster and another that is RAC only for testing. Between Oracle and Sun, neither accept any fault for problems with their perfectly honed products. Currently, I have multipathed fiber hba's to a Storedge 3510, and I've tried to get Oracle to use a raw lun for the ocr and voting disks. It doesn't see the disk. I've made sure they are stamped for oracle:dba, and tried oracle:oinstall. When presenting /dev/rdsk/C7t<long number>d0s6 for the ocr, I get a "can not find disk path." Does Oracle raw mean SVM raw? Should I create metadisks?

Not that the word "fault" is characterization of any liability, but a technical characterization of acting like a responsible stakeholder when you sell your product to a corporation. I've been working on the same project for a year, as an engineer. Not withstanding a huge expanse of management issues over the project, when technical gray areas have been reached, whereas our team has tried to get information to solve the issue. The area has become a big bouncing hot potato. Specifically, when Oracle has a problem reading a storage device, according to Oracle, that is a Sun issue. According to Sun, they didn't certify the software on that piece of equipment, so go talk to Oracle. In the sun cluster arena, if starting the database creates a node eviction from the cluster, good luck getting any specific team to say, that's our problem. Sun will say that Oracle writes crappy cluster verify scripts, and Oracle will say that Sun has not properly certified the device for use with their product. Man, I've seen it. The first time I said O.K. how do we avoid this in the future, the second time I said how did I let this happen again, and after more issues, money spent, hours lost, and customers, pissed --do the math. I've even went as far as say, find me a plug and play production model for this specific environment, but good luck getting two companies to sign the specs for it...neither wants to stamp their name on the product due to the liability. Yes your right, I should beat the account team, but as an engineer, man that's not my area, and I have other problems that I was hired to deal with. I could go on. What really is a slap in face is no one wants to work on these projects, if given the choice with doing a Windows deployment, because they can pop out mind bending amounts of builds why we plop along figuring out why clusterware doesn't like slice 6 of a /device/scsi_vhci/ . Try finding good documentation on that. ~You can deploy faster, but you can't pay more!

Veritas required for Oracle RAC on Sun Cluster v3?

We are planning a 2 node Oracle 9i RAC cluster on Sun Cluster 3.
Can you please explain these 2 questions?
1)
If we have a hardware disk array RAID controller with LUNs etc, then why do we need to have Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) if all the LUNS are configured at a hardware level?
2)
Do we need to have VxFS? All our Oracle database files will be on raw partitions.

licensable) which is specifically designed for OPS/RAC. But if
you have a highly reliable, multi-pathed, hardware RAID platform,
you are not required to have VxVM.

IMHO, simplify is a good philosophy. Adding more software
and layers into a highly available design will tend to reduce
the availability. So, if you are going for maximum availabiliity,
you will want to avoid over-complicating the design. KISS.
In the case of RAC, or Oracle in general, many people do use
raw and Oracle has the ability to manage data in raw devices
pretty well. Oracle 10g further improves along these lines.
A tenet in the design of highly available systems is to keep
the data management as close to the application as possible.
Oracle, and especially 10g, are following this tenet. The only
danger here is that they could try to get too clever, and end up
following policies which are suboptimal as the underlying
technologies change. But even in this case, the policy is
coming from the application rather than the supporting platform.

The motive behind using LDOm Guest domains as RAC node is to have a better control of the resource allocation, since i will be having more than one guest domains which should perform different functions. The customer wants to have ORACLE RAC alone (without sun cluster).
I will have two T5120's and one 2540 shared storage.
My plan of configuration is to have
Control&IO Domain with 8VCPU, 6GB mem
one LDOM guest domain on each physical machine with 8 VCPU's, 8GB of memory, shared n/w and disks participating as RAC node's. (Don't know yet if i will use solaris cluster or not)
one guest domain on each physical machine with 12 VCPU's, 14GB of memory, shared n/w and disks participating as BEA weblogic cluster nodes (not on solaris cluster)
One guest domain on each physical machine with 4 VCPU's, 4GB of memory,shared n/w and disks participating as apache web cluster (on solaris cluster)
Now, My question is, is it a supported configuration to have guest domains as Oracle RAC participants for 11gR2 (either with or without solaris cluster).
If I need to configure RAC nodes on solaris cluster, is it possible to have two independent clusters on LDOM , one 2 node cluster for RAC and another 2 node cluster for apache web?
