  • Wich Sun machines can boot from SATA disk?

    Hi,
I would like to know which (newer and older) Sun machines can boot from SATA disks.
I think this is a feature of the OBP - so the question is:
Are there any updated OBPs for older Sun machines to boot from SATA disks?
    TIA
    Bernd

    Hi,
I am aware the limit with earlier openboot revisions that limit ATA drive size to +130GB>>( search the forum for previous threads on this topic ), I recommend using only
supported drives in Sun SPARC systems. What kind of project are you working on? That's my private test environment. Due to my limited budget I use only older machines there (for example, U10, U30, etc). I was thinking about buying a used V120 or something like that to replace my existing fileserver.
A V120 with two internal 500 GB harddisks would be perfect for that .
Looks like I've to wait until used T1000 are available to a reasonable price.
    regards
    Bernd

You need to go to OSX and set the boot drive to the Mac Volume. Then, when in Windoze, select the Mac Volume when booting back to OSX.
If you still have issues I would:
    a: Repair Permissions
b: Reset-PRAM, this will reset the boot drive to OSX
c: Repair Drive with Disk Utilities (Mac Drive)
    d: Try re-installing Boot Camp
I do not have this issue with non-RAIDED drives but had it with a regular dual partition drive... It got mixed-up and did the above.
The previous poster is probably correct, he has the same basic set-up as you do. Would not hurt to try though.

  • Sun V100 should boot from disk

I read a lot of pages and manuel, but I do not find the right comand sequence in lom to set the boot mode from "net" to "disk".
My system always does a "boot net".
    regards/TX
    TAB

It isn't a LOM setting you need to review, but your settings in OBP.
If you do not already have them, get the V100 documentation from Docs.Sun.Com
    [http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/prod/v100.srvr?l=en&a=view]
Connect to your system and get to its OK prompt. Review its current setting for boot-device (it should be at the default of `+disk net+` which means it will try to boot from the drive but when that fails it will boot from the network -- standard behaviour).
If your system is failing to boot from the disk drive, you either have a missing or failed disk or you have a corrupt bootblock on that drive, or you have simply not installed a bootable OS to that disk.
The documentation has everything you need for that V100.

  • Boot from Raid-hdd with a controller card installed?

    Hi,
I have a problem. I've just intalled a Windows 2000 my HDD3 (IDE-raid) and everthing went well. I've put the 1st boot option to SCSI and it boots normal. But when I add a hdd to my controller card (Promise Ultra100) it doesn't boot the raid, instead, it tries to boot from the hdd on the controller-card. I've just got this card, and had a KT3-Ultra ARU before. There I could change between "Ultra-0, Ultra-1, Raid-0 and Raid-1 etc. etc." in the bios, where Ultra stands is the Controller card and Raid in the onboard raid. So, why can't I do this on this, newer card? Any1 know how to work around it or how to fix it?
    This is what I have:
    IDE1:
            Master:  Western 180GB
            Slaev:    Maxtor  250GB
    IDE2:
            Master: NEC 1300A
            Slave:  Lite-on-it 40125W
    IDE3 (Raid):
            Master: Maxtor 80GB
            Slave:   Maxtor 80GB
    Controller card IDE4:
            Master: Western 250GB
            Slave:   Western 250GB
    Controller card IDE5:
            Master: Western 200GB
            Slave:   Seagate 30Gb
    Controller card = Promise Ultra100
And yes, I have the modded version of the bios couse I wanted to have a real raid on my IDE-drives. How can it even be raid if it's only one drive? But that doesn't really matter, couse the boot-options are the same as before.

Hi, I did as u said and bought a new controller card (Titan Electronics Inc. Ultra ATA/133 IDE). But it didn't help, it's the same as with the older Promise card.
    This is what happenes:
When I add a hdd to the controller card it finds the hdd and such. Everything works normal untill the os-boot-process begins. Because there is only one alternative called "SCSI" in the bios, where u chose where to boot from it thinks it should boot from the controller card (cause it is a kind of SCSI-card). But I want it to boot from the raided-drivers on the onboard raid (whitch also is a kind of SCSI-card). The thing is that it mixes them up, and only tries to boot from the controller card i've installed, and ignores the raided-drivers. When I had my Kt3 Ultra-aru I could chose between booting from:
    IDE0
    IDE1
    IDE2
    IDE3
    CDRom
    Raid0
    Raid1
(this options only showed up when I had my Promise ULTRA controller installed on it)
    ULTRA0
    ULTRA1
    ULTRA2
    ULTRA3
But with this, newer and more expensive card, I can only chose SCSI in the boot sequnce.
Any idea how to fix that? Maybe to mail to the MSI so they fast can added that choice to the BIOS in an update?
Would be thankfull for any help possible

  • Cannot boot from RAID 1 drive on K8N Neo4

I am trying to install Win2K on a mirrored RAID array my K8N Neo4 motherboard.  Here is all the hardware:
K8N Neo4(MS-7125).  The box says K8N Neo4 F, but the intro screen says "Platinum".  Bios version 1.9
Hard drives: Two Maxtor Ultra16 250GB 7200 IDE drives.  Both on IDE controller 1 as master and slave.
    AMD athlon 64 3500
I followed the directions in the manual for booting off a RAID array.
In CMOS, Enabled IDE RAID, IDE Primary Master RAID, and IDE Primary Slave RAID.
    In F10 raid setup:
Set up "Mirroring" RAID array using both drives.
Enabled "boot" option for the array.
Array list shows Array as healthy.
Set boot order to "hard drive" then CDROM.
I boot from win2k CD, press F6 to install RAID drivers.
After a bunch of other stuff has been loaded, I am prompted for the RAID drivers.  I load both exactly as shown in the manual.
However, I am not sure I have the correct drivers on my floppy.  The directions in the manual for creating the floppy are clearly incorrect as they would result in nothing on the floppy.  I coppied the contents of the "pataraid" directory to the floppy.  The win2k installer asked for "nvata.cat" so I took it from the "sata_ide" directory.
Next, the installer asks me which disk I want to install windows onto.  This seems strange as it should see the two disks as one drive.
I tell it to install on the forst drive.  It formats the first drive and transfers a bunch of stuff.  It then reboots and tries to boot off the hard drive (or RAID array in this case).  The computer is unable to boot off the hard drive.
    Has anyone seen this?
What should I really make the RAID driver floppy?

I think I know what you are referring to.  Nvidiia's documentation for nvRaidMan says that it reconstructs a mirrored array (once the bad drive has ben replaced) slowly over the period of a day.  I think this is actually a disadvantage.  The promise RAID controller allows you to immediately copy the good drive to the new drive.  It can take a while for big drives (like twenty minutes), but then you are fully protecetd again and you dont have this big task in the background all day long.  More importantly, the promise documentation makes it clear which drive is being copied to which.
I think I will start looking for a promise RAID controller and just make a mental note not to trust nvidia.

  • 645E MAX2-LRU Can I boot from Raid?!

    Hello,
Is it possible to boot from the onboard RAID?
I'm not sure cause I can't boot from any HD that is connected to the RAID IDE when I use them in "non Raid" mode.
I have an entry in the Bios "boot device" where I can set "Legacy SCSI". Is this the entry for the RAID Controller?
THX for your answers and excuse me for my bad english!!

Some more interesting information is had in this article about the virtues of SoftRAID vs. OS X RAID.
I've got backup to my backup. Call me paranoid if you like, but I hate standing there looking like a horse's tail end and crying about lost data and irreplaceable applications because I didn't do some simple housekeeping.
Add me to the "tri-backup" team (the wife hates all my hard drives.... sees money spent, I guess....).
I also keep 'hard copy" DVD of archived data, and all photos and audio. It only takes losing some important data once to underscore the importance of backup. In my case, it was a near miss (was able to scavenge the SCSI drive), but it scared the bejeebers outta' me......

  • Server won't boot from RAID mirrored pair

Some months ago we updated an OS X 10.4.7 server with a software raid pair of disks to 10.4.8 and were rewarded with a machine that sticks at the black-on-grey Apple logo with no cog wheel displayed. At that time I just bought a couple of new and larger disks, reinstalled OS X Server, updated with combo updates rebooted a couple of times to be sure and all has been well until tonight when our system manager tried to install Retrospect which required a reboot and, suddenly it's hanging at the Apple Logo again. Such cruel irony...
Booting from the install CD I can mount the raid, and apart from a handful of permissions needing fixing, Disk Utility says the pair is fine. Although Startup Disk lets it be selected as the startup volume, the problem persists and still won't boot.
Does anybody have any thoughts as to how to cure this problem reasonably quicky in way that preserves as much as possible of the existing installation. My only idea is to try bless(8) to fix the boot behaviour of the volume. However, its man page doesn't discuss blessing raid mirrors. Is there anything special required?
I'd also like to know what caused the problem in the first place, and how to prevent it in future.
    Thanks
    Charles

You say it has been working so I can't really tell you why it acts up now.
But the raid was setup using 10.4 Disk Util (RAID ver. 2 sw.)?
Tried diskutil checkraid disk3 in Terminal (from DVD)?
    Tried running DiskWarrior?
A customer who bought a pair of new larger third party drives for his Xserve G5 and put them in his old 250GB drive bay carrriers couldn't get it working with sw RAID (I didn't look at it myself).

  • Sun v40z wont boot from external DVD/RW drive

Hello folks, I am banging my head on the wall with a Sun v40z that will not boot from an external dvd drive. I want to install Win2k3 Server on it. Any ideas.

The v40z is an x86 platform, and thus has a BIOS controlling the boot order and boot devices. You'll have to attach a VGA display and keyboard, power on the system, then hit F2 or F10 to enter Setup (it should say what magic key it is at startup time, just after the SUN logo splash screen comes up).
Enter the BIOS, and go to the menu for boot devices, making sure you select CD-ROM as a boot device before your regular boot disks or network boot devices. Then Save and Exit, restart the system, and it should see and use the CD for the boot device.
A caveat is that some early revisions of the BIOS's, especially ones on early x86 platforms like the v40z, will not recognize an external device as a boot device. You may have to download the latest BIOS, install it (uses a floppy, IIRC!), set the correct BIOS options again (they get wiped out when the BIOS is reinstalled), and then try the external CD boot again.
If this fails, you would be forced to install and internal CD device. This is not difficult, but is obviously more hassle than an external device.
    Good luck!

  • Booting from RAID 10

    Hello All,
As I have noticed for all other posts regarding RAID, people like to know why I want it. I am doing it for the sake of having it as a practicum as I am a computer engineering student. If you would like more details message me off the post.
Now onto the problem I am having.
As far as I can tell from reading www.macprojournal.com and some other sources, my Mac Pro should be able to boot off of RAID 10 using 4 identical disks (Seagate 500Gb 7200.10). I have tried many different combinations of raid (10, 0+1, 0, 1) and it does not seem any allows a bootable disk volume. I am able to load the OS onto certain RAID volumes but upon reboot the system shows each disk as a separate volume and does not allow me to boot since the OS was loaded onto a RAID volume.
So far I have seen that Softraid makes a software that will create bootable raid 1 volumes, which leads me to believe that my Mac Pro can not natively create these same kind of volumes.
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to get this to work. As some more notes, I am using the GUID partitioning scheme and have tried creating all RAIDs at once and creating each separately and then combining them. I am at a loss to whether this is possible without third-party software.
I will try and answer any further questions that my help someone help me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Mac Pro 2.66Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Powerbook G4 1.33Ghz

I have been able to load the OS (10.4.7) onto a striped set, but then it prompts for startup disk and only gives me options of individual disks upon reload (even after updating to 10.4.8). I have tried this a few times hoping it's a glitch. It's as if on reload it doesn't see the RAID as up, even though when I then go into the install disk and disk utility is shows it's up just fine.
I had hoped to get one striped set up and then set up the second striped and mirror them, since doing it all at once does not work at all.
When I have the RAID 10 built and load the OS, it stops and reloads before asking for the second disk and then starts the install from scratch.
When I load it onto a single disk I have no problems, but I want the RAID to work as it seems it should.

  • Can't boot from Raid 0

I have a pair of Raptor 74 HDs in a striped array. The OS (10.4.8) is currently on a Raptor 150. I cloned the boot OS to the raid array with Superduper (make bootable option set). The clone appeared to go fine but it won't boot.
Have I missed an option somewhere?
    Thanks
    Mike

    Are you kidding me landrefl?
    No bootcamp
I can understand this one although I would have thought the performance gains of RAID would far outweigh the 50€ or so you'd need to buy a separate drive for Boot Camp.
    No EFI updates
So what you're suggesting is that Mike, and anyone else reading this, to forgo RAID, something from which you can get benefit from with every minute yur Mac Pro is turn on for something you might do for line 10 minutes maybe two times a year? That's like say that modern watches are bad because you need to change batteries in them.
Again, for the small price of an additional drive to have a spare single drive boot you'd be mad to give up RAID for this reason.
Performance hit as Raid is done by the computer CPUs, not the disk controller
As far as I know, and I could be wrong on this, is that the Mac Pro actually utilises the RAID 0 and 1 support that is provided, in hardware, by the Intel 5000X chipset.
Even if I'm wrong on this the additional performance gained by going RAID far outweighs any potential CPU usage it might incur. Let's face it, if your drives are working that hard to incur a noticeable CPU penalty I'd rather the greater drive performance any day as that'll be your bottleneck and not and CPU usage that might occur from it.
For data protection, your best bet is still doing backups
So where is that different to a single drive? Last time I checked when a drive failed the result was the same, RAID or not. While RAID does increase the chance of a hardware failure it does not change the chance of a software issue such as a drive catalogue corruption. Nor does it change the outcome in these incidences.
Regular backups is recommended with or without RAID.

  • Mid 2007 Mac mini (2,1) with optibay, boot from raid 0?

I've just got an optibay, which I've installed, and now have two 7200rpm 500GB hard drives inside my 2007 mac mini. I've set it up as raid 0, and have cloned my original boot volume back to it, but when I start up the mini I get a stop symbol instead of the apple symbol.
According to this article, some macs don't support Raid booting, but my mini isn't listed amongst them:

Which Tiger Install DVD do you have...?
    1. I think that, that model originally came with 10.4.10 and so you will need either the original 10.4.10 install disc or a later retail (Leopard or Snow Leopard) upgrade DVD.
    2. In addition, a new (HDD, Hybrid Drive or SSD) must first be Partitioned GUID Partition Table and Formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before OS X can be installed.

  • Xserve won't boot from RAID after a Shutdown

    Hello
I'm running a new Intel Xserve 2x2.0Ghz with Apple Raid Card an 3x250GB Apple Drives in.
Starting from 10.5 Setup DVD and setting up a Raid 5 using the Apple Raid Utilitie works fine an also the installation works great. Raid set is ok, Volume initilized, all up an green.
If I then power down the Xserve (to move in to a rack or so..) an power it up again, the raid setup is gone, no bootdevice. No raid sets nor volumes are available when checking again with the Apple Raid Utilitie from the setup dvd. Backup batterie is charged an I also replaced the raid card one time.
Has anyone an idea whats wrong with this box?
