Lack of running for an interface normally means network connectivity issue.
Check the network cable is plugged in securely.
Check for light on ethernet card and switch connectivity light.
Try a different switch port or switch and a different ethernet cable.

  • Re: Sun Fire v490 / Solaris 9 booting from CD, Network problems

    Hi Folks,
Apologies in advance for the length of this post.
For the purposes of disaster recovery I have built a custom CD based on the Solaris 9 installation disk with our third party backup / restore software included on it.
After the rcS script has setup networking it runs a bash shell so that I can label / partition / format the hard disks as necessary then use the third party software to recover the system.
This works fine on almost all the machines we've tested (Ultra 10s, Ultra 30s, FS Prime Power 400)
On one Sun Fire v490 however I seem to have problems with networking...
Part of the customised rcS script makes the following call
ifconfig ce0 10.4.20.20 netmask 255.255.0.0 upto configure the NIC. However when the rcS script leaves me at the shell I'm unable to ping anything.
The output from ifconfig - a looks like...
    lo0 flag=..
        inet 127.0.0.1
    ce0: flags=1000823<UP BROADCAST,NOTRAILER,MULTICAST,IPv4>
mtu 1500 index 2 inet 10.4.20.20 netmask ffff0000 broadcast 10.255.255.255 ether 0:14:4f:0:be:beThe only thing that looks odd to me is that there's no "RUNNING" entry for ce0 that I get if I boot from the same CD on my other machines (Ultra 30s & Ultra 10s)
The broadcast address looks wrong, but again it's the same when I boot from th CD on my other test machines and they all seem to work.
I'm pretty sure that ce0 is "plumbed", 'cos if I "unplumb" it from the shell prompt then it doesn't even appear in the output from ifconfig.
Someone has suggested that it's a connectivity issue, but if I boot normally rather than from my custom CD then the networking is fine.
As a test I tried removing the drivers for hme from the CD then booting one of my Ultra30s but in this case the entry for hme0 was completely absent from the output of ifconfig.
So I've concluded that the driver for ce0 is at least there on the v490.
So for the moment I'm confused as to why the ce0 appears on the output for ifconfig, but has no RUNNING 'flag'
    Anyone got any ideas
    Many thanks in advance
    Regards
    Kevin

    hello
you have an error in your interface configuration
    you should have
you are using a class A ip adress but with a class B netmask
    ip 10.4.20.20
    netmask 255.255.0.0
    broadcast should be 10.4.255.255

  • Sun Fire V490 x 2 servers with Oracle RAC facing Split brain problem

    Hi all,
I have Sun Fire V490 x 2 servers with Oracle RAC and they faced a Split brain problem. One of the node's database instance has gone down, The DBA claims it is due to network problem, but as such the networks are OK. We use the on board CE1 interface for Cluster interconnect and CE0 as the public interface.
Did anybody face this kind of a problem? Could this be a hardware/OS patch problem?
I had kept a continuous ping for 24 hours after this happened last time and the output shows no packet loss
    Many thanks in advance.
    Ushas Symon

In order to diagnose this properly, you'll need to provide too much detail and far too many log files for a generic discussion forum to handle.
Use your service contract and open a support case.
Because a cluster environment is involved you'll likely end up talking to the cluster support staff.
They can analyze hardware and software errors as well as review whether you configured the systems in a supportable fashion.
Be prepared to make a direct connection to each system and gather data using such as by using the Explorer tool. The technical support staff will tell you what they will actually need.

  • On Sun fire v490 - Solaris 10 with Oracle 8.1.7.4 & Sybase 12.0

    Hi,
We are going to upgrade our server with this configuration -
Sun Fire V490     2 x 1.05 GHz UltraSPARC IV CPU
    8096MB RAM     2 x73GB local disk
    2x FC 2GB Sun/QLogic HBAs
    DAT72
On one machine we will have Sun Solaris v10 with
Oracle DB v8.1.7.4 & Second one will be Sun Solaris v10 with Sybase DB v12.0.0.6.
Now our question is - Sun fire have Hyper-thread CPUs will the O/S and databases (Oracle and Sybase) view the proposed system as a true 4 CPU platform? Will parameters used to tune the database such as Sybase max online engines still operate in the same manner as before?
    Our old machine configuration was - Sun E450     4x400MHz CPU     1024MB RAM     2 x18; 8x36GB disks

Questions on Oracle and Sybase should be directed to a database forum, this forum is for Sun hardware support.
Here is a link to a DB forum I look at from time to time:
    http://www.dbforums.com/index.php
The topic of tuning Oracle or Solaris is way beyond the scope of this forum, I have attempted to go into it before but didn't get any feedback and I would only like to spend lots of time on it if I was being paid!!! On the memory side, keep in mind that Oracle 9i 64-bit can address a maximum of 2 ^ 64 ( 16777216 TB ) memory, prior to that the DBA had to define memory parameters in init.ora. To be honest the last time I worked with a Oracle 8 database I shut a HP K class server down permanently that had been migrated to Oracle 9i on Solaris by an Oracle consultant and I can't remember all the tuning trick etc.

I don't think the test-scsi command is viable for that platform.
The FC disks are "viewed" by the system as external to the SCSI controller, almost as if they were in a multi-pack.
They are FC drives addressed by the chipset as SCSI disks.
    Try:
    <pre>probe-scsi-all</pre>
    Edit:
Which release of Solaris 10 are you trying to install?
Older releases that might be fine for V480's won't work on V490's.

I am entering in the console using normal mode, should I try to login in using diagnostic mode., or is there any other way to login into and modify the file. I also need training videos of solaris configuration .

  • Problem with RSC card on sun fire v490

    Hi all,
    I have a little problem.
I got few v490 that were already used.
When I connect to the management port of the RSC card I get the prompt of the RSC password, somthing i don't have.
The OS doesn't get loaded and I can't do anything. ( if I had access to the OS I would have reseted the password)
So now, I got left with the only option i thought of.
    1. Disconnect the RSC card,
    2. This will force the output of the consol to go to the serial port(tty).
    3. Jumpstart the machine (beacuse I don't even have the password for the machine)
    4. connect the RSC card, and reset the password.
There is someone here that encountered this problem??
Maybe there is a jumper that can reset the RSC password. i don't know... every response will be great!
    Thanks!!!

    Hi,
I just installed Solaris 10 on a sun fire v890 machine. I used the prtdiag -v command to check the system.
However, It appears to me that the CPU temperatures is higher than the temperature range specified in the technical specification. The server is a standalone node that does not connect to the network or process anything.
Is it a problem? Thank you.

  • Sun Fire X2100  Blinking Status LED...

We have 3 new Sun Fire X2100 servers at my current job. Just recently the status LED (orange) started blinking. The logs show fine and running a prtdiag shows everything up and running fine. Is there a way to turn off the blinking LED? I have gone over every piece of information I can find and have found nothing about how to turn this off once it has started blinking.

This may be one of two issues:
    - There's a know ILOM/nge driver bug in eariler releases of S10 x86 (pre 6/06).
    - There's a know issue with an older firmware rev of the BIOS/LOM where the net management port hangs/drops out and triggers the blinking fault LED. Do you know what BIOS revision you are at?
Most times a mobo swap is NOT the fix. You may be making the problem worse because we have mobos in the supply chain with older firmware revisions.
On the X2100's I usually have my customers try:
    - Moving the RAM in different slots
    - Updating the BIOS/LOM firmware
    - Running the PC-Check diags
... before I send a field tech out to do major surgery.

  • Clone the Solaris OS from Sun Fire X4200 M2 to Sun Fire X4100 M2

    Dear all,
    May anyone help me?
I want to clone the all slices (whole hard disk) in Solaris 10 OS from Sun Fire X4200 M2 Server and then restore it back to Sun Fire X4100 M2 Server. Is it possible to do this? If "Yes", may show me how to do it?
    I appreciate for your help.
    Thanks you in advance,
    Soret,

    Hi.
It's possible, but depend of used file systems, used or not voluem manager, hardware configuration.
    Possible steps:
    1) Make Backup x4200 ( on internal disk or third NFS storage )
    2) Boot x4100 from installation DVD in to Single user.
    2.1 Partitioning disk
    2.2 Create New FS
2.3 Restore backup on new FS. ( need configuree network, and mount disks with backups over NFS )
2.4 use devfsadm for rebuild device tree
    chroot <new_root> devfsadm
2.5 Make neaded customization on new system.
2.6 Install grub and bootblok ( installboot )
2.7 Umount all new FS; halt system.
    3) Try normal boot new system.
Some step for create new disk you may do on original server. Install new disk and make restore on it.
After- return this disk to x4100.
    Regards.
