Sun Forum request for feedback

For those of you who may not frequent the News and Updates forum of this site the Sun forum team would like to have feedback from as many people as possible on the proposed changes for a forum redesign.
Recent improvements like fixes to long time forum bugs, the news and update forum itself and the dialogue within and the new moderator program are all steps that the current Sun forum team has taken to improve the experience of users on this site and help to grow the community here.
So please take a moment to review and comment on the proposed changes in order to make known your interest in the forum teams activities and your interest in seeing the continued growth of this community.

  • Matthew :: Request for Feedback Gallery :-)

I was wondering if I could make a special request to Matthew.
I wonder if you would be willing, and also if there would be enough demand, to create one of your lovely galleries for the purpose of clients offering feedback? Photoshop's Feedback Galleries could use a face lift.
Maybe we could get an idea how many here might benefit from this. And if so, maybe those of us who benefit could donate to Matt's Paypal for his time.
This is all contingent on if Matt wants to take on this task of course. :-)
    Linda

    This would be nice

  • Request for feedback on crash report (OS 10.4.11, Firefox 2.0.0.16)

I'd appreciate any feedback on the following crash report. Although actual crashes have been infrequent, I have recently been experiencing a lot of repeated 'non-response' to mouseclicks on webpages, and am wondering whether this is a Firefox-related problem (2.0.0.16 update) or something else.
    Thanks.

Tough to say unless it happens again, some sites are just defectively coded themselves.
If you're worried about it, it may pay to run through this as insurance...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...

  • Request for feedback:  implementing Swing-based drawers

    Good day.
I've inherited some code to which I need to add a 'dresser drawer' like functionality. Click on a logical 'open' button and the drawer opens, revealing, or displaying as the case may be, a JPanel with more stuff in it. Click on a logical 'close' button and the drawer closes, leaving its container in the visual state in which it started. A familiar example of this effect might be something like the Mac Dock in 'auto hide' mode, where the Dock moves in and out of sight and addressability with some pointer action. The Dock is always 'there', but sometimes just not visible. So it would be with the drawer.
I am wondering if a solution would be based loosely on theDrawer.setVisible(), or whether something that sets the drawer's component width or height to 0 for-hide would be more likely.
Can anyone offer guidance on how to approach this using standard Swing techniques?
    Thanks.

You are on the right track with the setVisible method. It will hide and visibly behave like the component was never added to the layout of the component it is contained in.
For example, say I have 2 panels and two buttons. Panel A is the main container of Panel B and the two buttons. Button A is the 'Open' button, and Button B is the 'Close' button. Panel B was added to Panel A but immediately set to be not visible. Pressing the 'Open' button will toggle the Panel B setVisible method to true and show the panel and it's contents. Obviously the 'Close' button is the opposite.
By doing this it is very easy to have a collapse and expand functionality with your components.

  • Approximately 6% of all requests for help on this forum are ever "solved."

Approximately 6% of all requests for help on this forum are ever "solved." And approximately 34% of all requests for help on this forum are never responded to. Even with all the caveats, these numbers are embarrassing. Good luck everyone!

More facts and stats from the horse's mouth - http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/annualreport/2009/sustainability.html
"Total assets as of December 31, 2009 were $143 million compared with $116 million at the end of 2008, an increase of 23 percent. Unrestricted net assets at the end of 2009 were $120 million compared with $94 million in 2008, a 28 percent increase."
"Mozilla consolidated expenses for 2009 were $61 million, up approximately 26 percent from 2008 expenses of $49 million. Mozilla operating expenses in 2009 continued to remain highly focused on people and infrastructure."
"At the end of 2009, Mozilla was funding approximately 250 people working around the world."
Yes, Mozilla is indeed doing very well but they're a bit worried about the IRS audit that is currently going on.
Now, if we take the figure from the 2008 cnet article that 80% of expenses are spent on Mozilla employees as a relatively stable benchmark for 2009, we see that employee salaries averaged out to around $200,000 dollars annually for each employee, which obviously isn't what each employee is actually getting paid, but what it does mean is that given typical corporate scaling of salaries, some folks in this non-profit are making lots and lots of money.
The individuals who should be the most upset about Mozilla's unwillingness to invest even a fraction of its profits into building a real and responsive user support system are the collective-community-driven-volunteers who commit their free time so Mozilla can continue to cash in big time at their expense. A brilliant model!
Again, Firefox users appreciate the work that you and the other unpaid/unacknowledged volunteers do here.... Mozilla appreciates it more.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you get Error “Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed
Simple solution is to change the trust the trust level to FULL: <trust   level="[Full]"    originUrl="URL" />
In addition, you can modify the wss_mediumtrust.config and wss_minimaltrust.config file under the path “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\CONFIG”.

  • Request for switch off protection in coming new iphone.

    Dear apple
Subject- Request for switch off protection in coming new iphone.
I am a very new customer of yours, have bought a iPhone 5s on 25th Dec '13, but unfortunately someone stolen my phone in a MELA in my city. I immediately call my iphone but getting it switch off, as the thief had put the phone in switch off mode. I search it in iCloud with find my iphone apps but getting offline till date. I use pass code & finger print protection that's why probably it can't be use by the thief, but it can be sell as spare parts by opening up its parts . I had do all legal formalities & inform my carrier to lock my sim. Recently I again bought a new iPhone 4s 8GB from amazon.com & using it now.
It is the time to welcoming new iphone probably iphone 6/iphone air in this fall. I have plan to buy it & a apple laptop but first iphone 6 followed by iwatch if you launch & than laptop.
Now coming to the main point why I have written this mail let's explain it - I think you should put a switch off protection in this new device so that someone can't put the phone in switch off mode except the owner, at-least phone can be track till the battery last if someone stollen it. Because I know the problem & pain when someone lose a smart phone with all personal details. So please consider this in your new device as a new feature.
I have given the details of my both phone -

This is a user-to-user forum. If you wish to offer Apple feedback, you can do so here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
As for your suggestion, as much as I can understand what you are requesting, if the device is turned off, it is off. There isn't anything Apple or your carrier can do about that. Having a device that is OFF continue to send a signal suggest all sorts of privacy and battery management issues.

  • Anyway to email Apple in regard to musical requests for iTunes?

Not to appear presumptuos, but I often wonder if Apple has a forum available for requests or discussion concerning artists not yet featured on iTunes. I know copyright issues play a large part in determinig availabilty, but it would be nice to have a give and take in regard to more obscure artists, and their music.
    Thanks...

    How about a suggestion box?

  • Request for iOS

    Hi there,
I am new in this forum, and posting here as I haven't seen any other way to send requests for future releases.
I am quite sad to see there is no forum dedicated to iOS, as my post is related to it.
Firstable, want to say I have been quite happy with Apple products so far, in my opinion very high quality hardware.
It hasn't always been the same for iOS, but it definitely has changed and improved a lot with latest updates.
There are still some things that need improvement in order to become a bit more user friendly, and here goes one, very important for me:
I would appreciate some folder, same style as the 'fotos' folder, where you can download or transfer, and possibly view, all kind of documents (pdf, doc, xls, etc...).
And that those documents could be later sent attached to a mail, using 'mail', or other third party mail application (example mBox mail).
I know there are applications like goodreader with which you can do that, but it would be nice to have a default iOS function for that (to download & send documents). Same thing that you can do with mac OS.
I am honestly missing as well, like many users, flashplayer, to see some websites that need it to be installed.
Thank you and happy year 2011 to everybody!

There is no forum specifically for iOS since there's no single version. It's a bit different on each device. Posting in the device forum is the best way to get assistance.
For providing suggestions to Apple, use their feedback page:

There are many third-party utilities that provide this sort of functionality, including the ability to email a file. Dropbox is one I use and it works quite well. You might want to look into some of those.

  • Forums are for questions...

I know that posts offering Apple product feedback have always been an issue, and it's probably just at the usual 'noise' level that it always has been - but it's still irritating.
It's probably also irritating to those people who think that this place is their personal hotline to Steve Jobs. This is a prime example; http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=247765&tstart=50 with implied threats and all!
Yes, there are sporadic links to Apple Feedback pages, but couldn't there be a more specific imprecation at the top of a forum page along the lines: "This Discussions forum is for <product name> users to get answers from other users. If you want to send a suggestion for a feature request to Apple DO NOT post here but follow this link: http://etc"

    Hi Bernard,
Thank you for your suggestion. It is appreciated and will be looked at.

  • A (reasonable) request for Linux

Hi Adobe Team (specially Chris Cox, who takes a lot of time in this requests),
I want to make "another" request for Photoshop in Linux, and I would be glad if you people could take it in consideration. First of all, there are some clear statements:
Adobe will never port Photoshop to Linux natively.
They would loose tons of money porting it for a very small amount of real customers (and for real I mean people who already bought the product and are willing to move to Linux), c'mon be realistic. When Chris said that it wasn't without reason, there is a huge userbase in Linux, but no real profit in the short/mid term for Adobe (and I could cry out of shame by telling this, but it's true)
It would require at least 1-2 years of work and testing, which maybe Adobe can't afford (I don't know)
So, I'm making my request based on those premises, you will never port Photoshop to Linux natively, BUT:
Could you make an internal study to see if it's affordable for Adobe to provide official support for installation through Wine? I mean, maybe you're doing it, but if not, could you just assign one or two people to make the Wine installers? (that shouldn't take too much time neither money) those people only need to allocate time when it's a new Photoshop release, and the rest of the time they can continue with their usual tasks.
Maybe I'm saying too much, but I think this could be a reasonable way to ask Adobe for some Linux support without asking them to invest tons of money.
    EDIT
There are two questions that I left out of the box:
    1) A very common response would be: "But the community is already doing the installers, why should we bother?"
It's true, the community are doing them, but they're not enough. There are some Photoshop internals that people miss to make the installers good enough, and a bit of help from the Photoshop team would be nice to solve those bumps in the road.
    2) Another possible response: "But the Linux landscape is very fragmented"
True, that's one of the features of Linux, and one of the biggest disadvantages to make huge programs like Photoshop work properly. What I'm asking in this post is to make Wine installers, so the Photoshop team doesn't have to care about:
Efficiency: Wine has it's own efficiency, if we hav to use a bit slower Photoshop we can bear with it.
Fragmentation: Wine and the distros take care about the differences between linux distros, so the adobe team doesn't have to
Support: We don't ask for application support. Just for installation, if for some reason Wine installs Photoshop OK but it fails during runtime it's not Adobe's fault, we're using multiple layers that are not meant to be there in the native product.

Best if you post to the official Photoshop feedback forum where Adobe claims to do most of its listening to customer reported bug reports and feature requests

  • SP2013 Online - Approval Workflow "Request for Change" customization

    Hi,
I am need for modifying the flow of request for change option in Approval workflow.
Whenever a user requests for change, I need to change the current task status as "Change Request" instead of completing the current task and creating a new task. Also, send an email notificaton to the requestor to make the changes.
Requestor will then make the changes and send a seperate email to the approver to review and approve the changes. After that reviewer will be appoving the workflow task.
I am need of this process flow as my requestor group will not have access to workflow task to re-initiate the workflow after changes.
    Please advice.
    soundar

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to change the current task status as "Change Request" instead of completing the current task and creating a new task whenever a user requests for change in your SharePoint Online.
For your issue, you can Copy & Modify the Globally Reusable Publishing Approval Workflow using SharePoint Designer and create a new Task Outcome for "Change Request".
For more information, you can refer to the blog:

  • Request for proper information and to refuse to help when it's missing

On behalf of many of us volunteers who are getting tired of guessing the environment of those who are asking for help, I hereby
ASK ALL VOLUNTEERS TO STOP RESPONDING TO REQUESTS FOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE THAT DO NOT PROVIDE SUFFICIENT INFORMATION
In general, sufficient information should include:
    1) Operating system and Service Pack, not just the family.
    - Vista is a Family of operating systems. Insufficient information (need Home, Home Premium, etc.)
    - XP is a Family of operating systems. Insufficient information (need Home, Professional, etc.)
    - Linux is a Family of operating systems. Insufficient information (need Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4, Red Hat EL 4 Update 2, OpenSuSE 10.3, Fedora 8, etc.)
    2) Version of database installed to 4 digits (9.2.0.6, 10.2.0.3, 11.1.0.6) and the database's ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID
    3) Which product being used to access the database, which computer that product is on, and the Oracle Home from which the product is run. (SQLPlus, same home as the database)
    4) The output of lsnrctl status, the contents of the tnsnames.ora and the contents of the listener.ora
    5) The output of the ipconfig /all or ifconfig and of hostname
    6) Copy paste of the actual error message, not just a paraphrase of part of a line..
    Any other ideas?

I am not requesting this to be enforced by the forum.
I am requesting that people like you and me reply by linking to this thread (or to the other excellent related threads) INSTEAD of replying. If we do it consistently, eventually the newbies will also enforce it voluntarily, and that will cut the useless teeth-pulling-effort replies to a minimum.
In your 90% posts figure - you do realize that that means 90% of the posts are badly formed and are wasting your time as well as mine.
Or - if they were properly formed - you and I could answer that with a lot less effort and a lot faster. With the implication is that the person asking would generally get a resolution a lot faster as well. Net result - you and I get to sleep more (or answer more questions) and people with problems are happier because they get them resolved faster.
