Sun Logical Domains

Hi,
Logical Domains from Sun does not seem to be a "Hard partitioning". Is there any plan to make it a hard partitioning ?

    Hi Alex,

Using Logical Domains and CoolThreads Technology: Improving Scalability and System Utilization
This blueprint describes a Sun project that explored the use of Sun's CMT platform and the Logical Domains (LDoms) virtualization technology as a means to increase application software scalability and improve system utilization. Using LDoms software, multiple logical systems each with its own operating system and each running an independent instance of the application software are created on a single server.

  • Solaris 8, 9, and 10 zones in logical domains

We are planning to migrate our current environment to T5-2.
Current application environment is running with Solaris 8, 9 and 10 OS versions in V8* series and M5000.
Our plan is to install multiple logical domains in T5-2 with Solaris 10 or 11 and migrate the current running Solaris 8, 9 and 10 servers as zones. Plan is to create the flash using flar and restore in the target T5-2.
Will there be any issue with the said OS versions on migration?
    Please suggest.

    Lars,
Use ldmp2v to convert existing physical server to VM  and
Convert Solaris 8 and 9 physical servers to container in Solaris 10 VM?
Is that what you are saying?
Major constraint I have is, applications running in the current physical servers have no vendor support, vendor doesn't exist any more. Application has been locked to run only on the same OS version. What I am worried is, while running ldmp2v should not prevent the application coming up in the new virtualized environment. Keeping that in mind, I gave a thought like
    1. Install and configure the CDOM (control domain)
    2. configure and Install LDOMs with Solaris 10 OS
    3. Run flar on the existing Solaris 10 physical server
    4. Transfer the flar created to Solaris 10 LDOM and configure it as a zone
    5. For Solaris 8 and 9, create LDOMs with Solaris 10 OS
    6. Install additional patches and packages needed for supporting Solaris 8 and 9 zones
    6. create flar images on the existing Solaris 8 and 9 physical servers
    7. transfer the images to newly created LDOM and configure the zone.
    8. Current servers sun4u which has to be converted to sun4v.

  • Convert Solaris 10 zones to Logical Domain

I am in the process of building a Solaris 10 server on a T3-2 server. I am installing the 8/11 update of Solaris 10 and will be installing OVM for SPARC v2.2 on the server. Currently we are running a number of Solaris Zones on Solaris 10 servers. Instead of creating a Logical Domain for each of the physical servers with zones on them, I want to convert each of the zones in a logical domain. The zones are running on SunFire V890s and SunFire V440 servers. They are running the 10/09 update of Solaris 10 that has been patched to the latest kernel level, 147440-15. Can anyone guide me in an appropriate procedure to build the logical domains? Thanks.

may be better to move zone into s10 zone inside s11 ldom

  • Zones or Logical Domains

    Hello,
If I have an Enterprise T5120 server, would I be better off employing solaris zones or logical domains? I took a long break from this area of expertise and find myself in the wonderful world of virtualization!
Also, if you have any recommendations on books, whitepapers, other documentation, etc., that I can read on both subjects, I would be very appreciative.
    Thank you for you assistance.

Well, you could use both :)
did you see this article? I find it rather good:

  • T2000, Logical domains & Clustering

    Hi,
I am looking after the possibility to partition a T2000 in three logical domains. I would like on of these only to be clustered, while having the two others active-active. So that in case on T2000 fails, one LD failover transparently for the rest of the world, while the remaining active non clustered LD keeps working with its current work.
    Is it possible ?

The Server Instance cannot be started because the Integrated Weblogic domain was not built successfully. Not sure what is happening. The server is refusing to start because its not able to build the domain.
Note that when I started jdeveloper I manually set the domain home directory to a directory within the jdev installation using the command : -J-Dide.user.dir=<directory>
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been stuck at this for the past 2 days. Thank you!

Which directory do you specify? can you verify there is no spaces in the path to this directory?
Also clear your CLASSPATH environment variable.

There are a number of issues with network booting in LDOM 1.0.2, I think they affect all versions of the LDOM software though. If you add a vnet to a guest domain and then try and jumpstart a guest domain from time to time immediately after the guest domain does the RARP request it hangs. Just sending a break to the guest domain, going back to the ok prompt and starting the boot net - install again generally fixes it.
Also there are some gotcha's with LDOM's that affect jumpstart.
    1) If you chose option a) harden the OS using JASS when doing the installation of the LDOM software and you have the jumpstart server on the control domain then it isn't going to work. JASS turns off things like rpcbind which will prevent jumpstart from working. The same problem affects network booting. You would think that running a jass-execute -u to undo the hardening of the o/s in the control domain would work but it doesn't and you have to start over with a fresh solaris image for the control domain. This only applies if you have your jumpstart server on your control domain.
    2) Since jumpstart relies on the MAC of the client to function and since with LDOM's the MAC is dynamically assigned from a pool of address's you can end up with the wrong entry in /etc/ethers on your jumpstart server. That is worth checking.
    3) Since the MAC of the virtual network device isn't the same as the MAC shown when you run banner at the ok prompt in the guest domain you can end up with the wrong entry in /etc/ethers. Either do a boot net (vnet1 whatever) and then make a note of the MAC its broadcasting or do an ldm list-bindings domainname for the guest you want to network boot and copy and paste the MAC of the virtual network you are going to be booting from.
All the regular gotcha's with net boot and jumpstart still apply with LDOM's but so do all the usual fixes. Use of snoop will allow you do debug most problems. Also using show-nets at the ok prompt in the guest domain and make sure that you have the right number of virtual networks.
