Sun One Web Server connection pool goes stale after some time

Hi all,
I have a few web applications running on Sun One Web Server 6.1 (SP4). I configured a connection pool via the web admin of the web server. I do not know why the connections in the connection pool are never released after some time (this happened for 3 times with a couple of months in between). I need to reboot the web server to solve this problem everytime the connection pool goes stale. I have verified that the resources are released (stream and connection are closed) with proper programming logic. Even so, I think that the connections will be timed out (the setting is 5 minutes) by the web server as a bulletproof even if the resource is not released properly as implemented in the code logic. Can anybody help on this? I have been troubled by this problem by weeks.
Thank you in advance.

  • Oracle 10G Db Starts-up After Server Reboot, BUT Goes DOWN After Some Time

    Hi All,
    I am really puzzled over this one. I have couple of servers running DB on them and I have used scripts to auto-enable them when server(s) reboot.
    But there is one server where I see this funny behavior.
    The DB comes-up after server reboot.
    I can verify that in the startup logs and some more logs that I created.
    I can see that LISTENER is able to communicate also.
    But after a while, the DB shuts-down....!!
    I have checked all the places I could. I have also tried to see the difference between this server and others (I did not install this one), but can not see any difference.
    Is there anyway to find out (log) what is shutting down the DB??
    Any help will be much appreciated as I am at my wits end.

  • Connecting to Oracle 9i with Sun One Web Server 6.1 SP4

    I have an application that connects to an Oracle 9i database. When I run iPlanet 4.1, I am able to login to the application and run it. Since I have migrated to Sun One Web Server 6.1 SP4, I have not been able to login. Through some built in error logging, I have been able to determine that my user validation routine is receiving a Null pointer when it trys to connect to the database. I have also determined that my login servlet is executing properly. When I receive the Null pointer error, I am redirected to a failed login page, which is what is supposed to happen in such a case. I believe that I do not have the web server configured properly to connect to the database and I am not sure how to do it! Below is an excerpt from my code where the database connection occurs and the exception is detected. Any help would be appreciated!
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
              oracleConnect = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@" + chost + ":" + cport + ":" + csid ,u,p);
         enable = true;
    oracleConnect.close();
    }catch(java.sql.SQLException e){processError.logError("validateUser Invalue user" + e.getMessage()); enable = false;}
    catch(java.io.FileNotFoundException e){processError.logError("validate User error" + e.getMessage());}
    catch(java.io.IOException e){processError.logError("evalidateUser rror File Error " + e.getMessage());}
    catch(java.lang.NullPointerException e){processError.logError("validateUser error Null Pointer " + e.getMessage());}

    You are not using the server's built in JDBC Connection pooling, so there is no special WebServer configuration needed to connect to a database.
    If in the other hand, you want to use the built in connection pooling, then refer to this page to see how to create a connection pool
    http://docs.sun.com/source/817-1831-10/agjava.html#wp1085593
    Samples on how to configure and use JDBC connection pooling can be found in the sample apps

  • Poor Performance of Sun One Web Server 6.0 SP6

    We are running on an E450 with 2GB of memory, Solaris 8 2/02 with Recommended and Security Patch Cluster from 31 Jul 03, Sun One Web Server 6.0 SP6, Macromedia ColdFusion 5, JDK 1.4.1_02. We are seeing intermittent (three or four times a day) performance problems, extremely poor response time.
    A vanilla, test iPlanet web server was put up on port 2443 with https turned on and off. Repeated control tests on file operations (copy link as) showed similar results as those described in High Impact above. Changes to add KeepAlive parameters (in magnus.conf) showed no noticeable improvement.
    Tests were conducted -- on the test server -- accessing the same file from two clients, one a thin client (TC), the other a Unix workstation (UW).
    Results:
    1) Sometimes process TC was started first and continued normally while process UW hung up; when this happened, only one httpd process was building cpu time;
    2) Sometimes process UW was started first and continued normally while process TC hung up; when this happened, only one httpd process was building cpu time;
    3) Sometimes both process TC and process UW continued normally regardless of which was started first; when this happened, two different httpd processes were building cpu time together;
    Speculation on Process Management - speculation is that, in the case of the 3rd bullet above, iPlanet assigned different httpd processes to the two requests. In the case of the first two bullets, however, the belief is that iPlanet actually assigned the second request to the same process it had previously assigned the first request. In this case, the second request was left to wait. It appears that most of the work done by httpd children is performed by only two or three children, even when there are 10 available.
    Questions;
    Why are the other httpd children are not more fully utilized?
    What about changing the number of Acceptor Threads?
    Could turning on Native Polling help (UseNativePoll in magnus.conf)?
    Any other thoughts about what is going on or how to fix the issue?
    Thanks for any assistance

    Because the security context is set as a process context, the NSAPI thread locks the process prior to setting the security context. The older NASPI plugin that we are using is not reentrant, it will not work with the mulitthreading model. Under multithreading each thread would have access to the security context of each thread.

  • Where is Sun One Web Server's equivalent to Tomcat's common/lib

    i'm new to sun one web server and i'm trying to set up a connection pool. i set up a resource using the server manager but when i try to run my app, it produces a
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSourcei have the oracle driver jar i just dn't know where to put it.
    can anyone help?

    No, the jars would not be picked up unless they are explicitely added to the server.xml classpathsuffix, or put in the web server instance lib directory.
    Ex 1: putting them in the instance lib dir (no need to add them to classpathsuffix):
    /opt/SUNWwbsvr/https-hostname.domainname/lib/
    Ex. 2: If you have a jar file in your home directory, for example:
    /home/username/lib/classes12.jar
    You could have to add it to the classpath prefix in server.xml:
    <JAVA ... classpathsuffix="/home/username/lib/classes12.jar" ... >
    In this case, you could have all three server pointing to the same jar.
    The nativelibrarypathprefix is for native lib files (platform specific files, not jars)

  • Sslext NOt working Sun ONE Web Server 6.0?

    Hi,
    I have implemented the sslext tag for dynamic switching of http to https.
    I am using ATG Dynamo Server ONLY in the Development Env. (using the default Web Server of ATG) for testing this and sslext tag works fine using the Plug-In of struts which is in sslext.jar.
    but in producation the ATG Dynamo Server 6.0 is configured with Sun ONE Web Server 6.0, as forwarding request throught the Web Server to the App Server.
    But here sslext stop working?? any guss why?
    Sun ONE Server 6.0 is configured with ATG Dynamo Server 6.0 as Connection Module.
    There are three ways a Connection Module can handle requests for files whose MIME type is text/html.
    1)You can choose to have the files served by the Sun ONE Web Server,
    2)by the Dynamo server,
    3)or by the Sun ONE Web Server (but also send requests to Dynamo for logging).
    we select the 3rd option.
    any Guess why this is happening???
    regards
    DJ

    Since removing the log settings from magnus.conf failed to fix the problem, the log settings are probably not the source of the problem.
    Did anything else - e.g. ColdFusion configuration changes - occur at about the same time you changed the log settings?

  • Deploying servlets in the Sun One Web Server 6.1

    Friends, Please let me know how to deploy servlets in the Sun One Web Server 6.1.
    Thanks in advance,
    Madan.

    You cannot get that behavior.
    When an SSL client and server negotiate the connection, the client sends a list of all the cipher suites it supports. From that list the server will pick the most secure cipher suite which it also supports (if the server doesn't support any of the cipher suites proposed by the client, the connection establishment will fail).
    RC4 (128bit) is more secure than 3DES (112 bit). Thus, a server will never pick 3DES above RC4_128 if both are valid options (i.e. when both client and server support both). If you really wanted to force use of 3DES you need to disable RC4_128 in the server (or all the clients; or both).

  • Integration of Sun One Web Server 6.0 with Sun One App Server 7.0

    Is it possible to integrate Sun One Web Server 6.0 with the Sun One App Server 7.0??
    Sun One App Server 7.0 comes with the in-built HTTP listener. But we want to know if there is a way by which we can use the Sun One Web Server 6.0 with the App Server 7.0 and not the in-bulit HTTP listener?

    As suggested by you, I have used Sun ONE Application Server 7's plugin to connect the Sun ONE Web Server 6.0 with Sun ONE Application Server 7 as per the information given in Sun ONE Application Server 7 Administrator's Guide.
    I have added the plugin package to the webserver and added the following into the magnus.conf:
    Init fn="load-modules" shlib="C:/iPlanet/Servers/plugins/passthrough/passthrough.dll" funcs="init-passthrough,auth-passthrough,check-passthrough,service-passthrough" NativeThread="no"
    Init fn="init-passthrough"
    and to the obj.conf
    NameTrans fn="assign-name" from="(/A2P2Test|/A2P2Test/*)" name="passthrough"
    <Object name="passthrough">
    ObjectType fn="force-type" type="magnus-internal/passthrough"
    Service type="magnus-internal/passthrough" fn="service-passthrough" servers="http://<application server http listener>"
    Error reason="Bad Gateway" fn="send-error" uri="$docroot/badgateway.html"
    </Object>
    The webserver starts up without any errors but never forwards any requests what might I be doing wrong?

Is it possible to write a plug-in for web server authentication mechanism?

    I have almost identical problem (topic iPlanet 6.0 stops responding). Since than I made some serious testing and found out that NSAPI does not produce problem. You most probably don't have admin priviledges required to start a service on this Windows machine.

  • Cannot initialize CGI exec subsystem - Sun ONE Web Server 6.1

    Hello,
    I have a problem connecting to a running admin server on Solaris 9. Startup is as follows:
    (error log)
    [12/Mar/2004:11:06:43] info ( 2579): CORE1116: Sun ONE Web Server 6.1 B08/22/2003 12:37
    [12/Mar/2004:11:06:43] info ( 2580): CORE3016: daemon is running as super-user

    [12/Mar/2004:11:06:56] info ( 2580): CORE3274: successful server startup
    Then, when I try to connect to it with the browser it results with an error:
    [12/Mar/2004:11:09:31] failure ( 2580): cgi_init reports: HTTP4047: could not initialize CGI subsystem (Cgistub path ../../bin/https/bin/Cgistub), err fork() failure [Not enough space]

    What is the meaning of '...not enough space' ?
    The port itself is still listening:
    *.84 *.* 0 0 49152 0 LISTEN
    I must add that the server itself has been already successfully installed, ealier tests with the admserv were fine. But all of a sudden I can't get rid of this error, I made no changes except several reboots.
    Regards Nick

    The file iwsstats.https-admintool is a binary. Are there any hints inside why the server gives this error? If yes, can it be displayed?
    I my case I have installed a virtual server named admintool, this is owned by user netlife.
    Now I changed in the Server Manager in the CGI settings > Listen Sockets the info about CGI user and CGI group according to the netlife user.
    Right now it works, so I will watch out for further occurences.

  • IPlanet migration failure for Sun One Web server 6.1SP6

    Recently we downloaded the Sun One Web server 6.1SP6 and we are having problem trying to upgrade our current version. We have been able to install the package and get the admin console running but we can not migrate the current instances across to the new version. We can successfully choose an instance to migrate however once we click the migrate button, absolutely nothing happens in the browser and nothing can be seen in any error logs and truss indicates a read of a pipe going nowhere, after which the cgi stub terminates.
    We are migrating from
    iPlanet-WebServer-Enterprise/6.0SP5 B10/31/2002 16:22
    to
    CORE1116: Sun ONE Web Server 6.1SP6 B05/07/2006 12:33

    well, it is good that you have considered to upgrade considering 6.0 Sp5 has been EOL'ed for some time now.
    here is the url that describes migrating to 6.1 from 6.0
    http://docs.sfbay/app/docs/doc/819-6514/6n8h9dr61?a=view
    now, if you are still having issues with migration using GUI, you can provide us the admin server error logs or call Sun tech support (if you have support contract) to help you with this.

  • Struts & Sun ONE Web Server Enterprise Edition 6.1

    Is there a web page that explains how to install struts and Tiles so that all web pages on the server use the information. I am trying to install on Sun ONE Web Server Enterprise Edition 6.1.

    Hi,
    Its wise to use Oracle THIN client, unless you will need any OCI specific features.
    Oracle OCI driver requires that your client must have a Oracle Client installation to connect using OCI, but the thin driver only requires classes12.jar in the client host to connect.
    You can browse thru the Oracle JDBC Developers guide for more info.
