Sun OS 10 Admintool & top utilities

Hi everyone,
I have a quick question about Admintool and top utilities in Sun OS 10. Do you know where i can find the package?
Thanks,
Marin

Admintool is not in Solaris 10. Go for SMC if you want a GUI.
Top is probably on the companion disk, but you can use 'prstat' instead in most cases.

• Need to remove sun glare

Hello,
There is background sun glare over the top of this young man's forehead and hair. I obviously need to remove as much of it as possible. I have experimented with Shadows/Highlights, Levels, Curves and the Burn tool. It seems that the latter gives the best results. One problem I've encountered is that it seems I cannot use the Burn tool on a separate layer above the photo's layer (as one could with the Clone tool, sampling all layers). Perhaps I am doing something wrong. I am using PS 6.
Any pointers would greatly be appreciated. This photo will be for this man's memorial service so I have to get it as best I can. I am uploading only a screen shot, the original is 300 dpi.
Thanks.
Tom

That's pretty bad and will never look right but try these steps to minimize that glare...
Open the photo in Photoshop
Open the Channels tab in the Layers Panel
Control Click on the RGB Composite Channel's tiny image Icon. That selects all the luminosity of the photo.
Switch back to LAYERS tab and you'll see crawling ants on all the Luminosity parts of the picture.
Now do CTRL + J to put that selection on Layer 1
Set Layer 1's blend mode to MULTIPLY.
Then Flatten Layers
Then do all the usual image fix ups to make a better image.
I think CS6 can do all those steps.

• VMware ESX + Sun Cluster - is it supported?

Do you know if Sun Cluster installed on top of VMware ESX can be supported by Sun/Oracle?
Do you know what requirements newly installed cluster has to meet in order to satisfy Sun's support contract?

The binaries (executables) in an Oracle home are "linked" (link edited?) to the OS libraries on each server where the software is installed.
Unless the OS is IDENTICAL on each of the IDENTICAL(HW) servers -- that would share the Oracle home--, you could be in trouble.
The only supported configuration (I know of) where the Oracle binaries are shared between servers is 9i RAC. On 10g RAC the binaries are installed on each server.
Other wise I'd say it's NOT recommended, besides you don't save anything (execpt a cooupl of Gigs disk space).
:p

• Patch Manager lists patches i already installed... help!

Update Manager is still showing 173 patches which i already installed on May 20th.
The "Installed Patches" section is showing 0 patches.
I am Running Solaris 10 on x86 Dual Xeon
Once all the patches were applied I linked 2 folders off to *{color:#0000ff}/export/home{color}* to save space on the root drive...
but as far as i was aware this should not make a difference.
Below you can see my {color:#0000ff}*/var/sadm*{color} folder

In the Update Manager, the spool directory is{color:#0000ff} */export/home/patches*{color}, there are no patches in here. I cleaned them out.
When i attempt to install an already installed patch, it fails (which is good) but doesn't remove the patch from the list.
Has anyone any ideas how i can get Update Manager back to normal?
Thanks

Try moving the files in /export/home/var/sadm/patch and /export/home/var/sadm/patch back to their correct locations.
You might then find that updatemanager works as expected again. Did you ever stop to think what those directories were used for?

• How can i enlarge the mail size?

hi all:
i have installed JES2005Q4. The system version is:
Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.2-3.04 (built Jul 15 2005)
libimta.so 6.2-3.04 (built 01:43:03, Jul 15 2005)
SunOS mail 5.10 Generic_118833-33 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-280R
now, i assigned the "bronze" service package to all the users. According to the description, this package allow the max-mailblocks is 700. so, if i send the mail which includes a attachment(>=700K), the system will say "552 5.3.4 a message size of 702 kilobytes exceeds the size limit of 700 kilobytes computed for this transaction".
how do i enlarge the every mail size to 2M?
thank you!!

i found the cos.sample.ldif file and edited the bronze mailMsgMaxBlocks to 2000. The cos.sample.ldif file is to be used to create new service packages. It is a template on what they should look like. In your case you are editing an existing service package. Let me run you through an example that I performed on my own system:
=> Settings for user shjorth who has the service package "mars" applied, note "mailmsgmaxblocks: 700"
bash-3.00# ldapsearch -D "cn=directory manager" -w password -b "dc=aus,dc=sun,dc=com" uid=shjorth mailmsgmaxblocks inetcos
version: 1
dn: uid=shjorth,ou=People,o=aus.sun.com,dc=aus,dc=sun,dc=com
mailmsgmaxblocks: 700
inetcos: mars=> Review the mars Class-of-Service (CoS) template, this is where the "mailmsgmaxblocks: 700" above comes from
ldapsearch -b "o=mailcalendaruser,o=costemplates,dc=aus,dc=sun,dc=com" -D "cn=directory manager" -w password "(&(objectclass=ldapsubentry)(cn=mars))"
version: 1
dn: cn=mars,o=mailcalendaruser,o=cosTemplates,dc=aus,dc=sun,dc=com
objectClass: top
objectClass: LDAPsubentry
objectClass: extensibleobject
objectClass: cosTemplate
cn: mars
mailMsgMaxBlocks: 700
mailQuota: 5242288
mailMsgQuota: 3000
mailAllowedServiceAccess: +pop:ALL$+imap:ALL$+smtp:ALL$+http:ALL
daservicetype: calendar user
daservicetype: mail user=> Edit the mars CoS template to increase the mailMsgMaxBlocks: to 2000 (2MB)
bash-3.00# ldapmodify -D "cn=directory manager"
Enter bind password:
dn: cn=mars,o=mailcalendaruser,o=cosTemplates,dc=aus,dc=sun,dc=com
changetype: modify
replace: mailMsgMaxBlocks
mailMsgMaxBlocks: 2000
modifying entry cn=mars,o=mailcalendaruser,o=cosTemplates,dc=aus,dc=sun,dc=com=> Confirm user shjorth with mars CoS template now has mailmsgmaxblocks: 2000 set
bash-3.00# ldapsearch -D "cn=directory manager" -w password -b "dc=aus,dc=sun,dc=com" uid=shjorth mailmsgmaxblocks inetcos
version: 1
dn: uid=shjorth,ou=People,o=aus.sun.com,dc=aus,dc=sun,dc=com
mailmsgmaxblocks: 2000
inetcos: mars
Considerations
* Delegated Administrator caches the service package definitions so viewing the service package definition in the "All Service Packages" tab may not reflect the current settings. Restart webserver hosting delegated administrator to flush the cache immediately. The settings which control the refresh time of the cache are servicepackage-ttlhours and servicepackage-ttlminutes in the /var/opt/SUNWcomm/WEB-INF/classes/sun/comm/cli/server/servlet/resource.properties file
* Messaging Server has a LDAP cache, so any user LDAP modifications (which the above change was) may take up to 15 minutes (by default) to be reflected. If you want to test that the user now has an increased maximum email size do so 15 minutes after applying the LDAP modification or restart the MTA to flush the cache (./imsimta restart)

• Passing parameter/variable values to containers

What options are available to pass a value assiged as a prompted variable/parameter in a plan to a container to resolve a value for a variable/parameter defined in a container which is called by the plan?
Supposed the plan is defined as:

<executionPlan xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance' name='setdb' version='5.1' xsi:schemaLocation='http://www.sun.com/schema/SPS plan.xsd' xmlns='http://www.sun.com/schema/SPS' path='/utilities'>
<paramList>

</paramList>
<simpleSteps>
<execNative userToRunAs='root'>
<inputText>
:[dbName];
</inputText>
<exec cmd='sh'></exec>
</execNative>
</simpleSteps>
<inlineSubplan planName='install_container_xyz'>
<simpleSteps>
<if>
<condition>
<istrue value=':[do_container_param]'></istrue>
</condition>
<then>
<install blockName='default'>
<component name='xyz.cont' path='/someN1FolderPath'></component>
</install>
</then>
</if>
</simpleSteps>
</inlineSubplan>
</executionPlan>
How can I pass the value assigned to dbName to the container xyz.cont to be used to resolve a value for a variable/parameter in the xyz.cont?

The new, soon-to-be-released 6.0 version of SPS handles this problem with Component Variables. With this feature, you can specify in the plan what variables to pass to the component blocks.
However, that doesn't help you in the meantime. The sample XML you list isn't quite accurate, but I think I understand what you're after. I cleaned it up a little to make it valid and took out the execNative step (not sure what the intent of that was).
Anyway, here's what I get for the plan:

<executionPlan xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance' name='setdb' version='5.1' xsi:schemaLocation='http://www.sun.com/schema/SPS plan.xsd' xmlns='http://www.sun.com/schema/SPS' path='/utilities'>
<paramList>

</paramList>
<simpleSteps>
<if>
<condition>
<istrue value=':[do_container_param]'></istrue>
</condition>
<then>
<install blockName='newBlock'>
<argList dbName=":[dbName]"/>
<component name='xyz.cont' path='/someN1FolderPath'/>
</install>
</then>
</if>
</simpleSteps>

Note that you have to rename the block. You can't change the signature of an inherited component block (container component defines block "default". Either create a new block or use an untyped component). I think this is what you're trying to do. Please let me know if I missed.

• Photos app always quitting

Hello all,
I just received (3 days ago) my brand new iPad. The first thing I did was charging it for a good 12 hours (or even more). Then it was time to start using the apparatus. First thing were my pictures. It took several hours for my MBP (with the iPad connected and supposedly synchronizing, therefore unusable) to adapt the pictures to Photos (iPad's iPhoto) and an other 45 minutes to synchronize the 33600 picture or so. So far so good. Here comes the problem: each time I launch Photos in my iPad a screen would appear saying that it is updating the pictures, and then just quits (comes back to the initial iPad screen, as if I pressed the menu button).
What I did before writing this post:
1. Restore the iPad entirely;
2. Turn off completely the iPad (holding the on/off button until the "Slide to power off" appears and slide;
3. Turn the iPad back on again and try Photos...
To no avail.
Any additional suggestion(s) most welcome.
Thank you for your attention and possible help.
Best regards from the sunny and a bit chilly Jura mountains in Switzerland.
Pit

Hello again,
Just to give a quick follow-up on the above mentioned issue. Unfortunately, it is still going on. Despite the new version of iOS 3.2.2 (which seemed to "only" resolve a security issue).
This is what I noticed so far:
· Only 26'518 pictures will fit (I still 38.4 GB free). Adding another image one renders the Photos application useless. When entering Photos, a screen appears saying "updating pictures", the little sun spins (the equivalent of the beach ball on Mac OS X) and then it goes back to menu (where the application icons are);
· When I'm scrolling rapidly in Events view, when reaching approximately the 2/3 of the length, the Photos app just quits and back to square one;
· It also happens in the "Photos" view, but less frequently;
· On the synchronization side, at the end of a sync, I have a window that appears saying that there are two movies that can not be played in the iPad, therefore they have not been transferred (for the moment I want to leave that warning so once I will try to transform those movies in a compatible format).
· Finally, after synchronizing, the iPad becomes very slow and, after a while (10-15 seconds perhaps) it just reboots. Sometimes the reboot is quick, but often it takes quite some time. One can see the Apple logo, with the little sun thingy turning on top of it and it beeps like if the iPad went mad.
Obviously, I tried to restore the iPad from iTunes, but except from taking hours to do so (transferring all the pictures), it does not change anything. I also tried to switch off and on again by holding the power button for a while and slide), etc.
My guess (but this is just a hunch) the pictures transformation in order to fit in the iPad went wrong somewhere. I would like iTunes to start all over again, but I don't know where to indicate it. I saw folders named "iPod Photo Cache" in both ~/Pictures and +~/Pictures/iPhoto Library+ folders. Should I erase them? Only one? Is there something in iTunes to do that again?
Any help welcome.
Best regards,
Peter
P.S.: I upgraded to iTunes 10 and that did not change anything either.

• Canon EOS 550D JPEGs don't show white balance EXIF info in Aperture

I have 23,000 photos in my iPhoto library which I would eventually like to transfer to Aperture. I've experimented with importing just a few photos from iPhoto so that I can practise using Aperture before I go over to it completely, but have a problem in that the white balance info for JPEGs is not copying over with the rest of the metadata. The white balance column in the Info pane is empty and there are no 'cloud' or 'sun' symbols at the top right of the Info pane beside the word JPEG. The white balance info for RAW photos, however, copies over fine.
I have performed Aperture Library First Aid (repaired permissions and database, and rebuilt database) but the problem still exists. I have also created a new Aperture library and then imported some original photos from iPhoto which I exported to the desktop and then into the new Aperture library. I had the same problem, with no white balance information showing.
This question is being re-posted in a slightly different form from a similar one I asked yesterday, because it has been suggested to me that it may be a problem peculiar to Canon EOS 550D users. Has any other Canon EOS 550D user come across this problem, or can anyone suggest a remedy please? I am using the latest versions of Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11.

Hello Ernie
I think you've pinpointed the nub of the problem. As I was only trying out Aperture, I thought the best thing to do would be to import just a few photos from iPhoto and have a play, so I went to the Import button in the Toolbar and imported them from my iPhoto library individually. After reading your advice I have just changed libraries and opened the iPhoto library in Aperture and the white balance information is now showing. I can't really see what the difference is between the two, I would have thought the white balance information would show whichever way I looked at the photos but I don't care, because you have solved it for me. Thank you so much for your time. So many people have tried to help me and I'm most grateful to the Apple Support community!

• Why is there no white balance info in 3.3.1?

I want to transfer my iPhoto library over to Aperture, but am reluctant to do so until I have familiarised myself with the new program. (I have over 23,000 photos in iPhoto!)
As a start, I have imported a few of my recent photos from iPhoto so that I can find my way around Aperture. One thing puzzles me. I can see the white balance information for each photo in iPhoto but the white balance field is greyed out in the Aperture metadata, and there is no 'cloud' or 'sun' picture at the top right of the Info panel, even though the white balance field is ticked in the Metadata Fields panels for Exif Info and Camera Info. I really need to know which camera setting I used for each photo to help me learn how to take better photos, but as far as I can see the information is not available to me anywhere in Aperture.
I have performed Aperture Library First Aid (repaired permissions and database, and rebuilt database) but the problem still exists. I can't find anything anywhere on the internet or in Apple Support that mentions this problem. Does anyone have any ideas for me please?

Sorry, I see you are referring to the Info and not the Adjustment.
Since I am seeing both in each program, I am not sure which may be the culprit.
You could try launching Aperture while depressing the 'Option' key and creating a new test library (Create New.. button). Then export some original files from iPhoto to say the desktop > import into the Aperture test library to see if the information shows up.
If you now see the info, then there may be something going on with iPhoto that is preventing the transfer. If this is the case, you might try the iPhoto discussions since the usual helpers would know more than I about fixing a potential iPhoto library issue.
Otherwise, wait for someone more knowledgable than I to help here as I am not sure what would cause that if iPhoto isn't (and since you have already used the Aperture First Aid).

• Problem transferring white balance Exif info from iPhoto to Aperture

I originally posted this question on the Aperture discussions page, but it was suggested to me that maybe I should try asking it on the iPhoto page as well.

Well, Terence, it duly showed up the white balance data when I shot a Raw photo. But I don't understand why Aperture recognises white balance for Raw but won't show it for Jpegs, whereas iPhoto recognises both.

• End of support for old Solaris releases

I searched the web site, but I couldn't find when Sun will stop supporting older releases (i.e. Solaris 2.6).
Can anyone tell me how I can find out?

Another procedure that has worked well for me over the years.
Go to Sun's web page.
http://www,sun.com
In the top corner of the web page, there is a search area.
Put in keyword eosl (for "end of support life").
The search results will bring up most every topic related
to Sun's philosophies and policies on the subject. More than you'd ever choose to read.
As an example, there were more than 225 search results today.
http://onesearch.sun.com/search/onesearch/index.jsp?qt=eosl&charset=UTF-8
Keyword eol (for "end of life") is also a valid search word,
but produces more than 1500 search results.
