Sun OS 5.8 Panic machine keeps rebooting

After shutdown I am not able to boot the machine.
Displays:
Warning: missing name/number? on line 1 of /etc/name_to_major
... same for all subsequent lines
Panic[cpu0] /thread=10408000: couldn't find major number for 'rootnex' .....
I am able to boot it with the Sun OS Cdrom via:
ok>boot cdrom -s and
#fsck /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0
#mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /mnt
#umount /mnt
#reboot
The file /etc/name_to_major looks just fine.
How can I reboot normally again ?
Does anyone know if there are Sun patches for this ?

Boot cdrom and make sure there is a line in name_to_major that reads
rootnex 1
And that the permission on name_to_major are -rw-r--r-- owned by root:sys.

  • Solaris 10 on Dual Athlon MP, can't install, keeps rebooting

    Hi All,
I've been trying to install Solaris 10 onto my machine:
Tyan Thunder K7X (AMD 760MP Chipset)
    2x AMD Athlon 2400+
    2,5 GB Memory
    Adaptec 2100S Raid Controllers
When the installation CD boots, you see a couple of dots appearing, then some text shows which quickly disappeared while the machine was rebooting. It was to fast for me to read, so I thought I might be a little more lucky by attaching a serial console to my pc. This captured the following information:

Well I see some ACPI things there, so I tried to circumvent ACPI by one disabling ACPI in the BIOS, two, passing the user-acpi-options=0x2 to the kernel at boot time (tried also with just 2, 4 and 8, whatever they do :P).
The thing is, I kept getting exactly the same results, what's going on here? Is ACPI not disabled, is it not ACPI but something else? I've also tried it with less than 2GB RAM, since I read somebody had trouble installing with over 2GB RAM, but this wouldn't help either. Any help/tips/suggestions are greatly appreciated
My appologies if this thread seems similar I've posted the same question on an other place on the forum (before I found this place), but I think this is the place I should have posted this issue in the first place...

    SOLVED:
Disabled ECC in the bios (though Windows and Gentoo Linux show now trouble whatsoever with my ECC memory, solaris doesn't like it)

  • Machine automatically reboots

I noticed my machine rebooted itself 3 days ago. Tonight it did the same and this is what I found in panic.log:

Does anyone know how to decipher this or where I should go from here? I have no idea why the machine is rebooting. I have a 3.5TB Xserve RAID connected to it and this machine is running as a webserver.

I had a CRS reboot issue on Solaris not too long ago. It ended up being an NTP issue. There are many reasons CRS could cause a node reboot. Possibly there is a timeout talking to the voting disks or OCR.
MetaLink Note:220970.1 is a good place to start for RAC questions. It has a section on Node reboots.
I also check out the CRS alert log and ocssd logs which can all be found in the CRS_HOME/log directory.

  • Desktop/Finder keeps rebooting after upgraded to Maverick (mac mini hooked up to a home theater system)

My desktop keeps rebooting ever since I upgraded to Mavericks.
Current setup, Mac Mini hooked up to home theater (Panasonic SC-HTB20) that is then hooked up to my Panasonic Plasma TV.
I usually leave my Mac Mini on running and at least once a day when I turn on the TV I can see that my desktop was rebooted. Firefox and Chrome will say that it wasn't shut down properly and if I want to restore my previous session. Also some times when I switched the input to watch TV and switch back, all my windows will be scattered out of place. For example Chrome will be in the top left hand corner to the point that it's almost minimized and I wouldn't be able to move it as well. Only thing I can do is close out these applications and relaunch them. It doesn't appear that the OS actually crashed, but more like the desktop/finder itself crashed. Cause once in a while I will switch back or turn on the TV and the screen will stay black for a few minutes then I'll see the cursor in the top right hand corner. After that I will start to see the desktop and my application start loading. It doesn't go through the regular process of rebooting where you see the Apple logo so I don't think the OS actually crashed but I could be wrong.
For some reason it seems like Maverick doesn't like the home theater system. An almost guarantee way to reproduce the issue is to wait for the home theater to turn off after it's been inactive for a while. If I turn it on the home theater to have the audio coming from it I will see the desktop goes black immediately then the whole desktop reboot process I mentioned above will kick in.
Never had any of these issues on 10.7 before I upgraded to Maverick.
Anybody have any suggestion? I really don't want to format and downgrade back to 10.7.
    Thanks

    Sounds like a kernel panic.
If you post the report we could have a go at deciphering it.
It would be in /Library/Logs/Diagnostic Reports.

Thanks in advance for your help  !

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • MacBook Air keeps rebooting during backup to TC

We got an MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro in our household and just got a Time Capsule to make it easy to back up both computers using time machine.
I'm not impressed. TC is slower than I expected for a 802.11n networked harddrive. I get a little over 1MB/sec when writing to the disk. Anyway, it took overnight to back up the Pro but subsequent backup were of course faster.
I never succeeded to back up my Air. It starts backing up. One or two hours later when I check the status the computer has rebooted and backup stopped. This happened 7-8 times. I tried turning off wifi and using an ethernet connection to the TC. It keeps rebooting.
Anyone knows what's happening here or could give me a pointer to how I can diagnose it further?
    Haavard

I have the same problem, did you ever get an answer to this?

  • HT201240 Ive tried all the Command-s command-r and nothing is working. my macbook pro just keeps rebooting as normal. Ive forgotten my admin password, or have re-entered it incorrectly, and it won't let me downloads mavericks. No discs. HELP

Ive tried all the shortcuts to do without start up discs, but it just keeps rebooting as normal..... Help. I cant download mavericks, Ive changed my apple id, and that didnt make any difference......

Any reinstallation is not going to be successful if you have invalid node structure. You have bigger fish to fry here than worrying about DVD access.
    Mr Simpson wrote:
The first step of this was to do a 'fsck -fy' and here it told me I had a 'disk0s2: I/0 error.' and 'Invalid node structure' and the volume check had failed.
You also mention that the 10.6 disc would read from the DVD but not allow you into Disk Utility? What happened when you tried to access it? Was it selectable and then didn't do anything?
We can't really narrow down whether it is the DVD or anything else at this time.
If you don't have a backup of the information it is probably toast if you cannot get Disk Utility to work. I would normaly suggest DIsk Warrior but that is a $79 gamble if you are not sure if the drive is working or not. It may be your last hope to recover whatever you can from the drive.
Also, what was the original OS installed on the machine before it crashed? Was it 10.6 or was it the 10.5.7 you mentioned?

  • 7Th Generation Ipod Nano keeps rebooting

Hey everyone I just got my wife a nano for her birthday, but it keeps rebooting on songs. I cannot go for more than 5-10 minutes before the machine buzzes off and I see apple logo on my screen. Ive tried restoring, the secret menu by holding down home, power, and pressing the vol up and down on the 2nd black screen to check the nvram.  passes. But still problems on numerous syncs and restores in-between, never in any other mode but playing mp3s..
she did not save my gift reciept nor the box, can we still get a working one without doing some sort of switch-a-roo at the store.
pretty bummed out here. Its was so sweet until it started zapping off and on.
    -Jason

You're lucky MachRc... same situation here... 7th gen stuck in reboot infinite loop. Was xmas gift for wife 18 months ago... "Geniuses" at Apple fiddled with it for 5 minutes, said it's dead and only option is BUY a new one. Then told me I should have bought Apple Care... COME ON, if your products won't last 18 months then you really have a problem.
My solution, pulled out the 10 year old Sony Walkman mp3 player, charged it up and threw the ipod POS in the garbage... My lovely wife is now happily listening to her 10 YEAR OLD Sony product without any problems.
    So long Apple!

  • K9A2 Neo keeps rebooting itself

I just had my motherboard and graphics card replaced but the new system keeps rebooting itself.  It can happen even if if the computer is just idling and I'm not doing anything with it but it happens a lot more frequently if I play certain games.  Windows was not reinstalled after replacing these two cards.  I don't know if it's of any significance but when I boot the machine the board beeps 5 or 6 times, instead of the 1 time I'm used to.  More often than not the unwanted reboot fails and ends in a blank screen but initial booting of the machine always succeeds.
I'm fairly green in these matters and would be really grateful if someone could point me in the right direction on this one.

Test each one memory stick alone with >>Memtest86<< , use the 1st DIMM slot close to CPU socket.
For details you can take a look here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=103598.msg760534#msg760534
    What PSU you use? {List brand and details {amperes per each line}, look for them over PSU sticker. Example in my signature}
    Also check CPU for overheating.

I doublechecked the CPU and Memory.

ok. let us know what happens wnen you try the different psu.
    Hi again
I tried an other PSU and it works!!   I can't thank all of you enough.
I think it was my PSU that was not compatible with the mobo or that the PSU was corrupt.
    Anyways PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
    Thank You.

  • After upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

I am trying to update my time machine backup on time capsule, but time machine keeps trying to create an entirely new backup (evidenced by the 200GB backup size). How can I get time machine to modify my old backup rather than create a new one?

It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.
You can also verify it. See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
He also has some info on this problem. eg C13.

  • Mac pro keeps rebooting

My Mac Pro 2.1 Keeps rebooting ramdomly. It seems to be more common when editing video.
    Any ideas anybody?
    Thanks in advance.

    Sorry for the slow reply.
My Mac Pro 2.1 screens go black and instantly reboots, sometimes it keeps rebooting until i hold the power button. I have reset pram, smc, renewed permissions and checked hard discs.
I am booting from a drive with lion 10.7.3. It also happens when I am booted from another drive running Snow Leopard.
I have also removed 4 gig of the 8 gig of ram and tried different configs of ram.
I have also disconnected everything except the keyboard, mouse and 2 monitors.
It is driving me bonkers because I cannot trust the mac Pro and I often lose work because it suddenly reboots.
    Any suggestions anyone.

  • Laserjet pro MFP M176n keeps rebooting

    Hi,
I have  a Color laserjet Pro MFP M176n printer. It ha snot been used for sometime.2 weeks ago when I printed something it had constant paper jam. I open the front door to remove the jam problem was not solved, I removed the ink cartridge to see if there was any piece of paper .Switch the apparatus off and  when i switch it on again it just wnt switch on and now it just keep rebooting and wont display anything.
I would liek to know how to solve this problem or if the printer has to be thrown out.
    Regards

    Hi @widadr,
I see that you are experiencing issues with the printer constantly rebooting. I will certainly do my best to help you.
Temporarily disconnect any cables from the printer, except the power cord, just to make sure there isn't any interference for the next few steps.
I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
Perform a power drain by disconnecting the power cord from the back of the printer and keeping the power button pressed for 30 seconds and in case of a power switch keep the switch in ON position for 30 seconds before reconnecting the power chord.
Try and update the printer's firmware by a USB connection if the issue persists. Software and Drivers.
I will send you another step to try in a private message.
In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.
