Sun Ray @ home - VPN bad performance
Hi All
we've setup a test configuration with a Sun Ray Server (dedicated network) a CISCO PIX 501 and one DTU SR2.
The screen refresh performance on the DTU is very bad. Other DTUs, connected directly to the SRSS are fine.
We've played around with the bandwith limit on the SR2 (GUI firmware):
no limit: DTU unusable
3000: DTU slow
1500: DTU more slower
700: unusable
The throughput of the PIX 501 should be around 3MPS. The PIX does nothing else than serving one DTU. All components (SR Server, PIX, DTU) are in the same room and connected directly to each other
Is the small PIX the reason for the bad performance ?
Should it work smoothly with only one DTU?
Which Hardware (vpn box) is recommended to serve at least 10 SR2 DTUs ?
Thanks a lot.
CU
Carsten
You problem could be fragmentation. Have you lowered the default MTU (1500). MTU of 1356 works with my ASA 5505. Here is a nice article on the subject, http://blogs.sun.com/ThinkThin/entry/the_importance_of_mtu .

Is Sun Ray a suitable solution for system administrators?
My company is deciding if Sun Ray can be a viable solution for system administrators for additional level of security since Sun Ray clients are diskless...less worries about malware or virus...etc.
However, looking through Sun's available thin client machines, there is no selection of laptop form. As you can guess, sysadmins are mostly remote and on the go...it cannot be expected that they are always at their desks or homes to access the thin client machines. I understand the availability of the web client solution...however, have my doubts about that and how much would sysadmins actually embrace it.
On the other hand, the inability of copy & paste as they are currently doing with traditional thick clients can be problematic too. One use case is when they test and build config on their desktops (say notepad), then upload to server hosts...or opposite, when they need to download logs to their machines and investigate...
I am not going into questions about support of OS X and other tools sysadmins usually use...since the support of true remote access will be the biggest hurdle up front.
Any comments?Hmmm. Very late to this conversation, but couldn't help to throw some change into the hat.
For casual use of light-weight, non-power hungry applications, running apps via SGD over a Sun Ray (soft client or not) is probably ok. But if you were to try to do this for normal users who need PC-like performance, you'd be delusional. Display information will travel over the network 3 times and you can't take advantage of any of the new, faster graphics capabilities of the newer Sun Ray's when you introduce SGD as the means to access Windows desktop applications.
To be explicit:
Sun-Ray -> Sun Ray Server uses ALP.
Sun Ray Server -> SGD uses AIP.
SGD Server -> Windows Server uses RDP.
If you deploy this widely, better go buy some stock in Cisco.
I'd use SGD only for remote PC/Mac/Unix users who need to bounce in from the wild west.
I'd use Sun Ray -> Sun Ray Servers + Windows connector (uttsc) for thin client access. -
Sun Ray Software release updates now available
The following maintenance release updates are now available from My Oracle Support:
Sun Ray Software 5.4.2
Sun Ray Operating Software 11.1.3
For a list of bugs fixed, see the product Release Notes Documentation.
Download these releases from My Oracle Support, or go to Downloads on OTN for download instructions.I'm getting bugged by my gf.. she has an unbranded 5800, a CV but it's stuck on v21.. problem is, her phone is hanging at the start of, during, and at the end of calls.. locking up hard. Thing is, we've never installed anything new on the phone with the exception of the maps update.. She does use it as an alarm clock, so I guess she'd be particularly miffed at it being inaccurate (like I was with my N97.. I now use a real alarm clock instead.. pittyful, I know!)
Introducing timing issues.. I think she can cope with.. She's not using it to read/access email she really just wants a working phone.. I didn't realise how bad it had got until I observed its performance first hand over a day.. 2 crashes! ouch!
So, seeing as Nokia haven't released a CV variant for this product code since v21 (which was very late when it came out earlier this year) and it is very nearly a year old.. is it worth forcing the update issue to try and get a Euro generic v31? Has anyone else noticed basic usage stability improvements? That's the key thing.. new features, speed aren't too important.. its the ability to answer a call without removing the battery that's getting her down -

-SunilTnx!!
Small, but important changes: now working with Cisco ASA 5500 VPN (no more downgrade to 4.0 f/w version), working great with a static IP (no VPN phase 2 hang). For now new firmware connecting throw VPN to corporate SRSS 4.1 without any problem.
Keep testing with OSol 2009.06 (2010.02 /dev). Next step - check new (and VERY VERY important) USB redirection features! Next step - testing within (officially supported) Solaris 10 5/09 - any way, its not so interesting. If it is interesting to somebody and not prohibited by EA Program rules - i'll keep blogging about all-around-new-sunray-software :)
Again, thank you! -
CMP 6.1 Entity bad performance.
I'am using entity 1.1 EJB on WL 6.1 and facing very bad performances:
around 150ms for an insert (i have 20 columns).
When accessing an order interface to read 2 fields in a session bean method: around
90 ms.
I'am very disapointed and confused. What should I look up for
to increase the performance ? Any important tuning or parameters ? Should I use EJB
2.0 to have significant perf ?
Thanks for any advice because we are thinking to switch all the application on stored
procedures. A solution without Entity and fewer stateless session beans.
My config:
WL: 6.1 on Sun sparc
SGBD: Sybase
Entity: WebLogic 6.0.0 EJB 1.1 RDBMS (weblogic-rdbms11-persistence-600.dtd)
ThanksHistorically its hard to get good performance & scalability out of sybase
without using stored procs. Using dynamic sql on sybase just doesnt do as
well as procs. Oracle on the other hand can get very close to stored proc
speed out of well written dynamic sql.
As far as weblogic goes, my experience is the focus of their testing for db
related stuff is Oracle, then DB2, then MSSQLServer. Sybase is usually last
on the list.
As far as the 6.1 cmp, haven't used it much, but because of these other
things I would be cautious about using it with Sybase.

Using USB printer on Sun Ray 2
Can someone direct me to a document or explain how I can configure the Sun Ray Software to allow me the ability to print to a USB printer attached to a Sun Ray 2 thin client. I believe this is possibele using the USB redirection utility but only when connecting to Windows XP desktops. I see it's being done when connecting to Windows 2003 Terminal Server. Any help or info on this would be great.
Thanks! Here is a repost of my article on the sun-ray users mailing list.

This article is for using Solaris as the Sun Ray server.
I have used a Sun-Ray local USB attached printer in two ways.
Precondition1: The printer was using Postscript rendering.
The printer had its own rendering engine.
The printer was NOT a dumb windows-driver dependant printer.
Precondition2 the user logging on needs to have the printer administrator RBAC role to be allowed
to create /destroy printqueues.
1) Printing from Solaris.
Set up a solaris printqueue with
lpadmin -p printername -v " sunray devicename" -I postscript -T PS -m printermodel
This will use the solaris lpfilter mechanism to convert the printdata to postcscript protocoll.
2) Printing from Windows.
Set up a solaris printqueue with
lpadmin -p printername -v " sunray devicename" -m printermodel
Set up the windows printer with a working windows Postscript driver.
The windows included hplaserjet-postscript driver works. for a hplaserjet printer.
or any printer emulating the HPlaserjet like many Xerox printers do,
This setup will generate the Postscript protocol on the windows PC , and it will merely
"pass-though" the Solaris spooler without change.
So if you need to print from both the SR server and the windows PC you need to define two spooler queues for each printer. Below are two scripts that have existed in various versions on sun-rays.org that I enhanced a bit and ran from the VDI superstructure to make it do what I wanted. For windows printing you then need to pass the printername as an argument to the "uttsc" startup command.
uttsc ......... -r printer $printername .........
# the SCRIPT "set-printer.sh" for printing from a unix desktop
#!/bin/sh
MACAddr=`ls -l $UTDEVROOT | sed 's/.*\.//'`
PrinterName=$MACAddr
PrinterPath=`ls /tmp/SUNWut/units/IEEE802.$MACAddr/dev/printers/* 2>/dev/null|head -1`

else

Sun Ray Server x64 or T2?
Hi,
I have been searching around looking for some advice/benchmarking for what hardware is best for Sun Ray servers. My plan is to use the Sun Ray VMware View Connector and so the Sun Ray server will only be managing the sessions rather than providing the desktop.
Therefore, would a T2 system give more consistent performance than a x64 system? and, how many Sun Ray sessions could be expected to be managed by a T5120 or a X4100?
Finally, is running the Sun Ray server in a VM a supported config?
cheers,
Simon. We have found that x86 series server far out strip the T series boxes for Sun Ray.
A X4100 with 8GB RAM should be able to handle 100 odd sessions. We build for our Customers on a model of around 125 sessions per server. We used to use X4100 but have moved to X4140, if you bumped the RAM on these to 16GB you should get more.
Sun Ray runs poorly under VMware and if you need to go down that route run lots of little Sun Ray servers with no more than 20 odd DTU per server.
Hope this helps -
Smart Cards slow with Sun Ray Windows Connector
I'm succesfully using smart cards to log on to Windows 2003. But the problem is that it's very slow!
If i enter a wrong pin code, its fairly quick to respond with an error but when entering the right one it takes like 13-15 seconds to log on. The smart card slot on Sun Ray 2 is flashing all that time, so it seems like it's reading the certificate takes that long?
Any ideas how to make it quicker?I have done the same setup with SunRay 170.
Approx the same delay is experienced with my setup.
When I meet my Card Vendor next time around I will ask about
how many times the CERT is read.
The Sunray 2 is faster , alot faster than sunray 170 so the delay
must be the speed that card transactions can be performed.

Solaris 10, Sun Ray Server Software
Hi,
I installed Solaris 10 on my x86 machine and managed to get it (eventually!) configured with a static IP etc.
I then began the install of Sun Ray Server Software and the first part went well. I then performed a reboot as requested using
sync;sync;init 6As this occured i spotted an error saying gzip problem due to not enough space when doing something with the boot_archive. I have since not been able to reboot my machine as I get Error 28: Selected Item cannot fit into memory etc. I found an article on the forums saying log in using the cd to a single user shell, rename the boot_archive to boot_archive.disabled and reboot. This has not had any affect. When rebooting the same error about gzip and space occured and then the error 28 appered. I tried this several times to no avail - once not getting the error 28 but the system not booting and freezing on teh grub window.
Any ideas?!
Regards
RichardI am not familiar with the boot_archive bit but I have used srss for ages without a problem like that. What kind of system is it on?

Sun Ray Server Failover/ Load Sharing
Hi All
I have 2 sun servers which i want to use as sun ray servers in failover/load sharing mode.
I have 60 sun ray thin clients who will access these 2 Sun ray servers.
The users will be using the word, excel and presentation application and save there data in their home directories.
What i want to do is to load share these users between the servers so that any user can connect on anyserver and should be able to see his old data.
Is it a possible configuration?
if yes then please give me idea about how to do it.
I've the system admin document for sun ray server where it says about replication but doesn't tell what data will be replicated between the primary and secondary server.
Can we replicate the the user home accounts and directories as well?
Please assist me.
Thanks in advance..

-SunilAnyone know when SRSS5 (4.2?) is coming out? Funny I came across SRSS5 today, as just this morning we began research in what it would take to move to LTSP. We have entire departments running off SRSS4.1 on RHEL5. This has been a pretty good solution but Sun insists on keeping SRSS for Linux a poor product when compared to it on Solaris. Things like sound, USB thumb drives, etc are implemented TERRIBLY on their linux software (if at all).
I'd be willing to give SRSS5 a shot if it became available soon. Even a time frame (like end of 2009, spring 2010, etc) would help. -
Hello,
What software must be installed in Sun Ray Clients?
No software is needed?
Thanks. There is no Software installed in the client
The Client loads a Firmware via TFTP . The End User does not
interact with this Firmware. The firmware fills the same function as
the BIOS does on a PC. But there is normally no user configuration possible.
The only possible situation where a user can configure the firmware is when the Sun ray is used remotely over the internet with VPN, Then a special version of the firmware is used and the enduser has to configure the VPN parameters , since he is nolonger connected to the INTRA-net DHCP service.
All SOFTWARE for the Sun Ray solution is loaded on the Server.

How to connect Apple TV to DVD blu-ray home theatre
Hi guys, I am planning to buy Apple TV2 and I was wondering is there setup guide for connecting to HDTV and home theatre system. I currently have LG HDTV and LG DVD Blu-ray Home Theatre. They are connected with HDMI 1.3 cable and I had to get optical cable to get sound from TV to Home theatre.
How is Apple TV fits into that? I have 1 HDMI slot free on TV and 2 HDMI inputs on DVD system.
I was thinking just to connect Apple TV to DVD via HDMI? Would that put sound on home theatre system?
Thank you in advance.
ddraskoYou have read home theatre manual about playing sound from external device.
You doesn't need to connect home theatre to tv at all as you have get video from apple tv.
Connect video output from apple tv to tv(may carry sound along) and optical cable from apple tv to home theatre.
That will do. You can mute sound of tv(in case hdmi carry sound along) or using other function(on samsung ) and hear from home theatre sound from speakers. -
Bad performance when open a bi publisher report in excel
We use bi publisher(xml publisher) to create a customized report. For a small report, user like it very much. But for a bigger report, users complain about the performance when they open the file.
I know it is not a native excel file, that may cause the bad performance. So I ask my user to save it to a new file as a native excel format. The new file still worse than a normal excel file when we open it.
I did a test. We try to save a bi publish report to excel format, the size shrink to 4Mb. But if we "copy all" and "Paste Special" value only to a new excel file, the size is only 1Mb.
Do I have any way to improve that, users are complaining everyday. Thanks!
I did a test today.
I create a test report
Test 1: Original file from BIP in EBS is 10Mb. We save it in my local disk, when we open the file, it takes 43 sec.
Test 2: We save the file in native excel format, the file size is 2.28Mb, it takes 7 sec. to open.
Test 3: We copy all cell and "PasteSpecial" to a new excel file with value only. The file size is 1.66Mb, it takes only 1 sec to open.

How can I redirect USB from Sun ray to Win2003 terminal server
Hi
I am running Sun Ray 4.2 in Solaris with SRWC 2.2 in a Kiosk mod to Windows terminal server 2003 , how can I allow users to use their USB divices from Sun Ray and appear automatically in their Windows desktop ..I try adding the following line to mikioskhdlr_win script
UTTSCPARMS="-m -b -A 24 -r sound:high" - r disk:M=/tmp/SUNWut/mnt/$USER
but it did not work .. please helpIf you are using the USB Drive Daemon or manually specifying the mount then there are no issues with user access. That's only an issue with the the built in USB pass through included with SRSS 5 which is connecting directly to Windows and in essence the physical machine. The former is just mounting a network drive which is user specific.
