Sun Ray server software and Sun DSEE
I want to have a centralized user administration in the latest sun java 7 directory server. i want to set up the system in that the users of the sun ray thin clients will be authenticated from
the DSEE. Please assist me in how to make this work.
Basically, you Sun Ray server must be an LDAP client: it must be set up so that when logging in, it actually authenticates users against DSEE.
DSEE can be installed on the same host as the Sun Ray server, but it's not a requirement. On the contrary, in such a case, you've got to be
careful in the start order of services at boot time. So the easiest way is to have DSEE and the Sun Ray server on separate machines.
How to configure both servers is explained here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E18752_01/html/816-4556/ldapsetup-1.html
Or at least, it's a good starting point.

Sun Ray Server Software and Sun Desktop Manager integration
Hello,
I have installed and configured SRSS and Desktop Manager..and they're working.
But... how to integrate them?...Will the Sun Ray Server Software 1.2 for Workgroup

as you can afford, and remember to configure an

Solaris 10, Sun Ray Server Software
Hi,
I installed Solaris 10 on my x86 machine and managed to get it (eventually!) configured with a static IP etc.
I then began the install of Sun Ray Server Software and the first part went well. I then performed a reboot as requested using
sync;sync;init 6As this occured i spotted an error saying gzip problem due to not enough space when doing something with the boot_archive. I have since not been able to reboot my machine as I get Error 28: Selected Item cannot fit into memory etc. I found an article on the forums saying log in using the cd to a single user shell, rename the boot_archive to boot_archive.disabled and reboot. This has not had any affect. When rebooting the same error about gzip and space occured and then the error 28 appered. I tried this several times to no avail - once not getting the error 28 but the system not booting and freezing on teh grub window.
Any ideas?!
Regards
RichardI am not familiar with the boot_archive bit but I have used srss for ages without a problem like that. What kind of system is it on?

Sun Ray Server Software 4.2
Hi,
I have the Sun Ray Server Software 4.2 setup on two servers but have noticed in our FOG that the failover group has stopped working in that only our primary server is been shown and not the secondary server. Due to this all user sessions are connecting to our primary server. I have tried both cold and warm restarts of the secondary server and also physical reboots of both servers. I have also redone the utreplica.
Any help would be grateful?
Kind regards.
Gav.First, make sure that the secondary server really is still running. 'ssh' to it and check that you get output from 'utgstatus' or log in to its SRSS web GUI and check its status, and if possible 'utswitch' a DTU to it and make sure that you get a session. If SRSS is not running then do a 'utrestart' and then check the previous set of log files (in /var/opt/SUWNut/log with .0 suffixes) for clues about what happened.
If the secondary server is running then its disappearance from 'utgstatus' on the primary means that the network has stopped delivering group membership announcements from the secondary to the primary. These announcements are sent as multicast by default. Some networks have trouble with multicast. If yours is one of those then you can tell SRSS to use broadcast instead, but this requires that the servers have at least one subnet in common (i.e. they both have interfaces connected to the same subnet) and for SRSS 4.2 it requires that you have the -01 patch installed. To use broadcast, edit /etc/opt/SUWNut/auth.props on both servers and set to enableMulticast property to false, then 'utrestart' both servers. ('utrestart' will temporarily interrupt sessions but will not destroy them.) Another alternative if you don't have patch -01 installed is to use 'utgmtarget' to configure unicast announcements in addition to multicast or broadcast. This will also require 'utrestart' on both servers after you create the 'utgmtarget' setting.

Bug or wrong configuration of the Sun Ray Server+DTU+17" and 24" screenres.
I have 2 DTU, one has a 17" screen with a resolution of 1280x1024 and the other DTU has a 24" screen with a 1900x1200 resolution attached. The setting of the Sun Ray server is configured only that registrated cards, can make an kiosksession to VMware View 4.6.
When I start the DTU's, there is nothing wrong. The correct screen resolution is displayed on the screen for both DTU's. When I put a smart card into the DTU that has a 17" attached, it's indicates the correct resolution. The problem starts when I hotdesk to the other DTU with the 24" attached to, the session what was builded on the 17" will be showed on the 24". So the the resolution is 1280x1024. With this action there's nothing wrong, because the kiosksession is made on the 17" and no disconnection is made, so this is a correct resolution at this point. When I pull the card out of the 24" DTU, the screenresolution will be still at 1280x1024. It's looks like the setting will be saved on the DTU. Only a restart of a DTU will turn back the good resolution.
When I do the same as the case before, but only I start at the DTU with 24" screen the kiosksession will start at 1900x1200. When I hotdesk to the Other DTU the kiosksession is still at 1900x1200, but only this time when I pull out the card out of the 17" DTU, The DTU will give the right screen resolution of 1280x1024
the DTU's are Sun Ray 3 Plus, it doesn't matter which DTU's I place, the problems seems like that the DTU will save the last screen resolution. I got 300 of these DTU's and try a lot of them, but still the same issue.
Note: with each case explained in this thread, the kiosksession will be started at first time, the kiosksession is not builded yet or has been disconnected.
This behaviour is with a standard installation and configuration of Sun Ray server software 5.1.2. No extra script is implemented. Also I tried the UTRESIZE script that I've found on this forum, but it didn't helped.
Is this problem a bug (known issue) or is this a wrong configuration of me? This is a big issue for meI have also a lot of fun with different screens, so I walk the "hardwired" mostly when I run into my screen does not look like correctly.
utresadm -a -c MAC -t default 1280x1024@60 ... and then this is nailed, whatever you do with this box. Very effective especially for beamers ...
what you can set, utresdef is your friend, utresadm -p show all the devices overwritten in case you need to change for a new monitor. And finally utresadm -d -c MAC -t default clears the setting.

Cannot configure secondary Sun Ray server
Hi All,
I have just re-built a secondary Sun Ray Server (4.0) running on Sun Fire X2200 (AMD) Open Solaris X86 platform with the following commands, the primary identical server is still working:
1. On primary server.
# /opt/SUNWut/srds/lib/utldbmcat \
/var/opt/SUNWut/srds/dbm.ut/id2entry.dbb > /tmp/store
2. On secondary server for the rest of steps.
FTP this file /tmp/store from primary server to the /tmp directory on secondary server.
3. Follow the directions in the Sun Ray Server Software 4.0 Installation and
Configuration Guide to install Sun Ray Server Software.
4. After running utinstall, configure the server as a primary server for the
group. Make sure that you use the same admin password and group signature.
# utreplica -u
# utreplica -s <existing-primary-server>
5. Shut down the Sun Ray services, including the data store:
# /etc/init.d/utsvc stop
# /etc/init.d/utds stop
6. Restore the data:
# /opt/SUNWut/srds/lib/utldif2ldbm -c -j 10 -i /tmp/store
This populates the primary server and synchronizes its data with the secondary
server. The replacement server is now ready for operation as the primary server.
7. Restart Sun Ray services:
# utrestart -c
8. (Optional) Confirm that the data store is repopulated:
# /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utuser –l
However, the following issues still remain unresolved:
( i ) Only a few of the Thin Clients are connecting through secondary rebuilt server.
( ii ) As a result of ( i ), no load balancing of the number of connections between primary and secondary servers. Where is the script on either of the servers responsible for alternating the connections?
( iii ) An Oracle Common Desktop logon prompt is displayed on those Thin Clients that are connected through secondary rebuilt server, as opposed to getting a familiar MS Windows 2003 logon prompt, consistent with majority of those Thin Clients going through primary working server.
Any other troubleshooting material on this area would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jack- So both servers are running, being a FOG and accepting connections ?
- check with the UI https://server1:1661 ... both servers should be there and visible
- output of utgstatus on both servers ?
something like
root@host02 <> : / > utgstatus
hostflags interface flags
xxx.yyy.zzz.0/24
host02 TN xxx.yyy.zzz.1 UA-
host01 TN xxx.yyy.zzz.2 UA-
- how do the the DTUs connect, e.g via the load balanced DNS entry sunray-servers with both servers ?
nslookup sunray-servers
Name: sunray-servers
Address: xxx.yyy.zzz.1
Name: sunray-servers
Address: xxx.yyy.zzz.2
Just give us here more info, I have two systems here, that load balance perfectly around 300 Connections, so it is feasible (Sun Ray 5.2.3 and VDI 3.3)

Monitoring Sun Ray Server health
I am interested in deploying Sun Ray Server as a component of a large VDI implementation. I want to be able to monitor the health of the Sun Ray Server software beyond the standard OS level stuff - number of concurrent Sun Ray Client connections for example. Is there an API (or some other mechanism) available for me to create an agent that can be monitored with standard monitoring software? Thanks!
Thanks for the info, however, I'm not looking for monitoring software - my organization already uses the IBM Tivoli suite quite successfully. I'm interested in more info on the specific Sun Ray APIs available to me to mine some health data. Thanks.

i bought my mac mini server with leopard server softw. but because i bought it in 2011 okt they gave me a free update to lion os incl server. after a half year i have to send me mac mini to repair because something was wrong with the hard drive. they fixt the problem and put on a new version of lion os. but they did not put the server version on it. they told me that i have to downl it for free. but it does not come for free.
The problem is before the repair they gave me the free version of lion osx server. because i bought a server version mac mine. but now after repair i only get a version of lion osx without the server software. and i do not have any ideay how to contact them about it tru mail. because calling them is at this moment no option for me.
how do i get my server version back without paying. and i dont have a paid version in my app store list because they gave me that for free with a code at that time ,

I had this problem as well. I was under the gun on time and just purchased it anyway. After installation I contacted support and they refunded me the amount.
You should have a backup of your servers regardless of circumstances. You would then be able to restore the server software.
When Apple repair machines they will often just swap it or swap the hard disk and will not make any effort to transfer your files. They assume you are doing a backup. Anybody running servers absolutely has a responsibility to ensure they have aduequate backups even more than 'normal' users. While Time Machine may not be wholely suitable for backing up servers Time Machine is so simple even normal users can use it and therefore no longer have any excuse for not doing backups. -
Sun Ray Server x64 or T2?
Hi,
I have been searching around looking for some advice/benchmarking for what hardware is best for Sun Ray servers. My plan is to use the Sun Ray VMware View Connector and so the Sun Ray server will only be managing the sessions rather than providing the desktop.
Therefore, would a T2 system give more consistent performance than a x64 system? and, how many Sun Ray sessions could be expected to be managed by a T5120 or a X4100?
Finally, is running the Sun Ray server in a VM a supported config?
cheers,
Simon. We have found that x86 series server far out strip the T series boxes for Sun Ray.
A X4100 with 8GB RAM should be able to handle 100 odd sessions. We build for our Customers on a model of around 125 sessions per server. We used to use X4100 but have moved to X4140, if you bumped the RAM on these to 16GB you should get more.
Sun Ray runs poorly under VMware and if you need to go down that route run lots of little Sun Ray servers with no more than 20 odd DTU per server.
Hope this helps -
Sun Ray Server Failover/ Load Sharing
Hi All
I have 2 sun servers which i want to use as sun ray servers in failover/load sharing mode.
I have 60 sun ray thin clients who will access these 2 Sun ray servers.
The users will be using the word, excel and presentation application and save there data in their home directories.
What i want to do is to load share these users between the servers so that any user can connect on anyserver and should be able to see his old data.
Is it a possible configuration?
if yes then please give me idea about how to do it.
I've the system admin document for sun ray server where it says about replication but doesn't tell what data will be replicated between the primary and secondary server.
Can we replicate the the user home accounts and directories as well?
Please assist me.
Thanks in advance..

Upgrade 32–bit Sun DSEE Server Instances with 64-bit RHEL 4.6?
I want to update 32–bit Sun DSEE Server Instances with 64-bit RHEL 4.6 to 64-bit ODSEE 11.1.1.5.0 with 64-bit RHEL 4.6.
ThanksBut it will be on the same physical machine or on a separate server? How big will be the DB?
Will be in the same topology? Separate topologies?
If you can afford some downtime and you've got different machines, you could plan a 'cold' migration:
- Stop the old DS instance
- Export to LDIF with NO REPLICA INFORMATION (this will also clean up a bit the DB!)
- Copy schema and indexes definition from source to target environment.
- Import from LDIF to the new DS topology
After that you'll have to tune the new environment, in terms of memory , entry cache, indexes, etc...

Running Sun App Server 7 and 8 on the same box
Hello,
Are there any known issues with running Sun App Server 7 and 8 in the same host box ? Currently I am encountering some class not found exceptions with Sun App Server 8 . Sun App Server 7 runs just fine.
Thanks,
Aswin. It's not advisable to run separate installations of
ColdFusion 7 and ColdFusion 8 single server on the same machine the
re are several services that will try to use the same ports.
However, you can install ColdFusion Enterprise using the
multi-server configuration and then deploy the J2EE versions of
ColdFusion to JRun. You can change the JVM that each instance uses
(we recommend the latest 1.4 for CF7 and the latest 1.6 for CF8),
and everything should run fine.
ColdFusion itself is essentially just a J2EE application, the
J2EE server itself is JRun 4. So the specific answer to your
question is "don't install 2 copies of JRun 4 to the same machine".
But yes, it's 100% possible, I'm running this configuration in my
own development environment. -
SUN DSEE 6.2 vs Fedora DS 1.1 performance comparison
Hi all,
I've just discovered a nice tool from SUN about performance analysis for ldap servers named SLAMD (http://www.slamd.com)
So I configured it and tried to analyze my servers. I've setup one SUN DSEE 6.2 and one Fedora DS 1.1
in my workstation. Both of them being populated with the same data (160 sample entries from sun) and using the same file descriptors.
My workstation is running fedora 8, Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz / 2 GB ram.
I did a couple of tests but all of them had the same search filters
Entry DN ou=people,dc=example,dc=com
Search Filter objectClass=*
Attribute(s) to Compare/Modify Add Operation Frequency 3
Compare Operation Frequency 7
Delete Operation Frequency 4
Modify Operation Frequency 4
Modify RDN Operation Frequency 1
Search Operation Frequency 10 description
I will give the results of my final test which lasted 240 seconds / 200 threads from one client
DS Overall Operations (Average/sec)
SUN *35,858*
Fedora *304,867*
It seems to me there is a huge difference! I didn't expect to get such numbers. To tell you the truth
I expected SUN DS to be much faster that Fedora DS instead of being *10 times slower*.
Furthermore while running the test on the Fedora DS the system got a max load of around 7-8 which implied that the system
worked hard to perform the test (CPU always at 100%).
On the other hand while running the SUN DS test, the system never got load more that 1 (cpu not more that 22%).
It was like the SUN DS was capable to do better but it was never bothered. I played with indexes, file descriptors, number of threads without
any significant change of performance.
I'm sure SUN DS can do better. So I'm looking for thoughts on the subject as well as performance tunning/optimization documentation.
Is the resource kit also available for 6.2 or is it just for SUN ONE server?
regards
GiannisGiannis,
Giving raw performance numbers doesn't mean anything unless you also provide the details of the data in your directory server, the settings and the exact tests performed (if it's a slamd standard job, give its name).
Slamd contains many jobs that are doing many different things leading to completely different numbers in term of operations per second.
This said, the numbers you show are puzzling me : SUN 35,858 vs Fedora 304,867 (Operations / Second) ?
I assume the , is the unit separator (and not like in the US the separator between thousands and hundreds).
If so, there is definitely something badly configured on Sun DS and/or Slamd.

Migrating Linux shadow-file MD5 passwords to Sun DSEE for Solaris/SunMail
Hello all,
We are about to undertake migration of an outdated mail server based on RedHat 7.2 and Sendmail/ipop3d to Sun Messaging Server (JCS6u2). While the filesystem/mail are not a problem, we're stuck at the question of how to best migrate old users' identities.
The old Linux system used user names and password hashes stored in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files. Hashes are mostly MD5 and a few seem like crypt.
Question is: are there known incompatibilities between password hashes (algorithms, expected format) in Linux and Sun products - Solaris/DSEE/SunMail?
That is, if we just take strings like these:
usemd5:$1$Wu7IqFT5$TeUht3OMdeSSBB3Vab4dB.:11262:0:::::134540116
usecrypt:DD2kEwCD8nies:10220::::::
Can we simply place the second column as the userPassword attribute in Sun DSEE and expect that users would be able to log in to LDAP-enabled Solaris and Sun Mail with their old passwords knownst only to them?
If not, is there some simple modification/translation of such hashes to a format accepted by Sun products?
Or are these formats/algorithms known to be incompatible somehow in a fatal manner, so our only option would be generation of new passwords for Sun DSEE and its clients?
Thanks,
//JimJust to reclarify or throw more information:
a password - cleartext value - testuser1 has 32-digit HEX value as - 41da76f0fc3ec62a6939e634bfb6a342
Same password when converted to Base64 pattern becomes - Qdp28Pw+xippOeY0v7ajQg==
But when I use pwdhash utility in DSE after configuring CRYPT to use MD5 hashes it becomes -
{crypt}$md5$$LiB/H70zXr3xfQPoXVuUQ1
I used below command :
pwdhash -D /opt/SUNWdsee/dsee6/ds6/slapd-oha-dev -s CRYPT testuser1
Actual hash value of pwdhash is -LiB/H70zXr3xfQPoXVuUQ1 with rest of the prefix is to meet RFC standard and salt and algo name separator.
I am wondering if Sun MD5 default uses any salt even when I haven't used or DS does it. Or if any other MD5 option is there which can be used.
Thanks,
Gaurav
