Sun ray thin client

Hi ,,,
Suppose we have two servers with two different applications and one Sun Ray Server. How could we direct the Sun Ray Client Sessions to these two application servers simultaneousely??
Regards,
Basem

I'd look at logging in to the application servers individually, using ssh and then tunnelling the X display back to the Sun Ray client.
Something like ssh -X host1 on one terminal window and then ssh -X host2 in the other terminal window.
I think this may work. It does on Linux anyway.

    Hi,
Did you get to solve the problem? I was able to print from an RDP session but get continuous pages of garbage preceded by a banner page. Were you able to print from windows to a DTU attached USB printer?
    Please advise.

  • Using SUN Ray thin client for UCCE CAD Agents

    Hi,
Does anyone tested the thin client SUN Ray for  Cisco Agent Desktops? Is this supported by Cisco?
We know that  Cisco supports Citrix for Cisco Agent Desktop but using thin client for  IP Communicator is not supported at all.
    Thanks.

I guess it all depends on what the SunRay client is connecting to? If it's a VDI, terminal server, or something else as long as that platform is supported by Cisco/CAD then it should be okay - after all the SunRay is just a way of connecting to a desktop environment that then runs the CAD software.
Hope you're SunRay deployment goes well!

Anyone know when SRSS5 (4.2?) is coming out? Funny I came across SRSS5 today, as just this morning we began research in what it would take to move to LTSP. We have entire departments running off SRSS4.1 on RHEL5. This has been a pretty good solution but Sun insists on keeping SRSS for Linux a poor product when compared to it on Solaris. Things like sound, USB thumb drives, etc are implemented TERRIBLY on their linux software (if at all).
I'd be willing to give SRSS5 a shot if it became available soon. Even a time frame (like end of 2009, spring 2010, etc) would help.

  • Sun Ray server software and Sun DSEE

I want to have a centralized user administration in the latest sun java 7 directory server. i want to set up the system in that the users of the sun ray thin clients will be authenticated from
the DSEE. Please assist me in how to make this work.

Basically, you Sun Ray server must be an LDAP client: it must be set up so that when logging in, it actually authenticates users against DSEE.
DSEE can be installed on the same host as the Sun Ray server, but it's not a requirement. On the contrary, in such a case, you've got to be
careful in the start order of services at boot time. So the easiest way is to have DSEE and the Sun Ray server on separate machines.
How to configure both servers is explained here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E18752_01/html/816-4556/ldapsetup-1.html
Or at least, it's a good starting point.

  • Sun Ray Server Failover/ Load Sharing

    Hi All
I have 2 sun servers which i want to use as sun ray servers in failover/load sharing mode.
I have 60 sun ray thin clients who will access these 2 Sun ray servers.
The users will be using the word, excel and presentation application and save there data in their home directories.
What i want to do is to load share these users between the servers so that any user can connect on anyserver and should be able to see his old data.
    Is it a possible configuration?
if yes then please give me idea about how to do it.
I've the system admin document for sun ray server where it says about replication but doesn't tell what data will be replicated between the primary and secondary server.
Can we replicate the the user home accounts and directories as well?
    Please assist me.
    Thanks in advance..

  • Is Sun Ray a suitable solution for system administrators?

My company is deciding if Sun Ray can be a viable solution for system administrators for additional level of security since Sun Ray clients are diskless...less worries about malware or virus...etc.
However, looking through Sun's available thin client machines, there is no selection of laptop form. As you can guess, sysadmins are mostly remote and on the go...it cannot be expected that they are always at their desks or homes to access the thin client machines. I understand the availability of the web client solution...however, have my doubts about that and how much would sysadmins actually embrace it.
On the other hand, the inability of copy & paste as they are currently doing with traditional thick clients can be problematic too. One use case is when they test and build config on their desktops (say notepad), then upload to server hosts...or opposite, when they need to download logs to their machines and investigate...
I am not going into questions about support of OS X and other tools sysadmins usually use...since the support of true remote access will be the biggest hurdle up front.
    Any comments?

Hmmm. Very late to this conversation, but couldn't help to throw some change into the hat.
For casual use of light-weight, non-power hungry applications, running apps via SGD over a Sun Ray (soft client or not) is probably ok. But if you were to try to do this for normal users who need PC-like performance, you'd be delusional. Display information will travel over the network 3 times and you can't take advantage of any of the new, faster graphics capabilities of the newer Sun Ray's when you introduce SGD as the means to access Windows desktop applications.
    To be explicit:
Sun-Ray -> Sun Ray Server uses ALP.
Sun Ray Server -> SGD uses AIP.
SGD Server -> Windows Server uses RDP.
If you deploy this widely, better go buy some stock in Cisco.
I'd use SGD only for remote PC/Mac/Unix users who need to bounce in from the wild west.
I'd use Sun Ray -> Sun Ray Servers + Windows connector (uttsc) for thin client access.

  • Microphone not working on sun ray 270 thin client

    Hello
I"m trying to make headphone and microphone work on a sun ray 270 thin client for an browser (java) based application. Its basically a meeting room kind to application where people can talk with each other.
The Speaker and Headphone is working fine however mic is giving trouble. I tried to test it with /usr/dt/bin/sdtaudio but when i click on record it give an error saying could not set audio format. I tried gnome-sound-recorder as well but it says device could not be found. The device is getting created in /tmp/SUNWut/dev/utaudio directory and $UTAUDIODEV variable is also set properly.
Please tell me how to trouble shoot this problem.

Post what your environment looks like. What version of everything are you using?

  • Internet Explorer on Sun Ray Client?

Ok, I know it's sacralidge (sp?), but I'm planning a solution that would satisfy a requirement of using MS Internet Explorer browsers - possibly on a Sun Ray Server thin client environment.
The solution is a Hospitality focused in-room Kiosk project.
    Can this be done?
Any tips would be much appreciated.
    Thx!

Not to throw this way off tangent, but is the "requirement" for Internet Exploiter ... er ... Exploder ... er ... that MS security hole ... {grumble} ... is it technical or "just because"? As long as the page doesn't use ActiveX or other MS-proprietary code, it should run fine under Firefox or Mozilla.

You can still install Acrobat Reader, Evince or Xpdf to read PDF files. But if you want that the PDF file should be displayed in a browser windows, then you can forget Evince in the previous list, or you can consider to use Firefox 19 or higher that incorpore a buid-in PDF viewer.

I have a RHEL4(Linux) 64 system I can test and post my notes here as an edit.
For Java based web applications to work, the Firefox 3.6 browser requires you to run Java SE 6 Update 18 or later.
    http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/6u22/index.html
    jre-6u22-linux-x64.bin
    As root
    cd /usr
    mkdir java
    cd java
    With a copy of "jre-6u22-linux-x64.bin" in /usr/java/
Change the permission of the file you downloaded to be executable. Type:
    chmod a+x jre-6u22-linux-x64.bin
    Run the self-extracting binary Type
    ./jre-6u22-linux-x64.bin
The license agreement is displayed. Review the agreement.
Press the spacebar to display the next page.
At the end, enter yes to proceed with the installation.
    Did not display on mine
    Double check of mozilla install
    find / -name mozilla -print
    /usr/share/mozilla
    /usr/lib64/mozilla
    cd /usr/lib64/mozilla/
    mkdir plugins
Exit Firefox browser if it is already running.
Create a symbolic link to the libnpjp2.so file in the browser plugins directory
    ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_22/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
    Restart and test firefox
    about:plugins (works)

    Tnx!!
Small, but important changes: now working with Cisco ASA 5500 VPN (no more downgrade to 4.0 f/w version), working great with a static IP (no VPN phase 2 hang). For now new firmware connecting throw VPN to corporate SRSS 4.1 without any problem.
Keep testing with OSol 2009.06 (2010.02 /dev). Next step - check new (and VERY VERY important) USB redirection features! Next step - testing within (officially supported) Solaris 10 5/09 - any way, its not so interesting. If it is interesting to somebody and not prohibited by EA Program rules - i'll keep blogging about all-around-new-sunray-software :)
