Sun Solaris Server Running Oracle 9i
If I am running Oracle 9i, what version of Oracle can I install on my MS Windows desktop to access it. Should I purchase and install Oracle 9i Client? Is there a free download available? My Oracle 9i includes Application Server and the regular CD packs.
We also have a Windows NT server running Oracle 8i. Same question to access it, for a PC must I install Oracle 8i Client? Is there Oracle client software I can get that will interface with the 9i and 8i servers?
I'm also wondering about 10g's ASM. Is that
something recommended. We have alot of in-house
hardware expertise, and the idea of using Automated
Storage Management seems too simplistic at first
glance. It sounds like you have SAN experts.
ASM simply compensates for
1) the need for a clustered file system in the RAC case; and
2) SAs and Storage Admins 'experts' who recommend stuff like RAID 5 as being best for a database (as compared to 1+0) and then argue that the SAN is great because of the huge cache ... not realizing that the cache is compensating for the RAID 5 deficiencies.
You see, ASM simply provides you with a file system in the case when no file system is available (raw disk). It can complement, or replace, the SAN environment.
I strongly encourage you to look at the ASM manual supplied with 11g in depth. The conclusion is pretty common, and pretty commonly wrong. However, as with everything else in Oacle, the only true answer is 'it depends'. (Docs are available at http://docs.oracle.com or http://tahiti.oracle.com)

How to migrate Solaris 9 running Oracle DB 9i into Solaris 9 brand zone
Dear all,
I am new in Solaris 10 zone. At this moment, my boss wants me to propose how to migrate legacy physical Solaris 9 server running Oracle 9i into container running in Solaris 10 T series machine.
I have down DB to perform full flar image. And I successfully install this flar image into Solaris 9 container.
But , oracle mount point such as /u01, /archivelog,... My DB is very simple, file system only, not raw partition...
May I need to create new DB mountpoints for this container?
And may I need to perform ufsdump and ufsrestore for these mount point?
Hope any one of you let me know.
Thanks,
MikeThank you!
Hopefully you also know the solution for my next question to morrow:

Move database from server running Oracle 11G to server running Oracle 12c
I'm trying to find out the easiest way to migrate a database from a server running Oracle 11G to a server running Oracle 12c. I have tried using RMAN's duplicate database command but have run into far too many issues when trying to setup both servers before running the duplicate command. If someone could provide some clear guidance on configuring both servers for the RMAN Duplicate command then that would be great. The other thing I have tried is performing a cold backup of all the files for the database (control files, data files, etc.). Copying them to the new server and then recreating the control file to include the correct location and names for the datafiles and redologs. After recreating the control file the database will not start up. I'm suspecting this is due to the version differences. If you can provide me clear (ie. migration for dummies) instruction for getting either of these methods to work it would be greatly appreciated. I'm also open to any other method you can think of to achieve what I'm trying to accomplish. Thanks, Paul Noyes

How to configure tape to sun solaris server?
Hi
We have a tape "Quantum Super DLT 600 tape drive" connected to Sun solaris 9 and working properly.
Now we want to connect and configure it to Sun solaris 10 server. I want to know how we can do it?
I checked in st.conf file , "#tape-config-list=" is commented in both solaris 9 while in solaris 10 it is not there.
I think i will just have to connect the tape to new srver(solaris 10) and do a reconfiguration boot. Right??
Also, what do i need to do for connecting the tape back to solaris 9 server.
ThanksYou really don't need to reboot the server. Connect the tape to the server and type devfsadm -Cv. Then type dmesg and check whether Solaris detect the tape or not.
if not do a reboot and see.
after doing one of above, insert a tape to the tape drive and type "mt stat" and see you got any output about a tape.
Refer Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 System Administration Guides.

Effects of changing IP number on solaris server with oracle
I need to change my servers IP adres.
What can i espect to do when I change it ?
We are running Solaris 2.6
A Oracle 7.3.4 Database
A Oracle 8.1.6 Database
Greet Jeroen TipIt all depends on how you have set up your connectivity to the databases. If you are using IP addresses in your tnsnames.ora or sqlnet.ora etc, then you will have to change all those. WE use DNS entries for everything, so the only affect on us when IPs change is at the DNS level and is transparent to us. (the DBAs that is).

Using VPN to connect to Windows XP server running Oracle Database
Trying to connect to a hotel PMS system (Micros Opera) through my mac. The system runs through internet explorer on PC and is based on an Oracle Database. The DB stores both the data and application. I have it set up and working via VPN in Parallels, but still have not been able to make it work on the mac side. All I needed to do in Parallels was add the VPN connection, direct IE to http://operettaserver and everything worked perfectly.
I have a feeling it has something to do either with browser compatibility or ports. On windows, it runs best in IE, but will load in Firefox. Can't get it to load in Firefox or Safari on the Mac side (even when I plug the computer directly into the network). The VPN connection seems to be OK on the Mac -- when i type the local IP it redirects to the server, but the login page does not open. I can, however, access shared folders.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be the issue? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
JKIt looks like a file transfer protocol issue here. Which is the OS on the server? Is it Mac or Windows.

How do I find the latest Critical Sun Solaris Patches on Oracle site
Hello
How do I find the latest critical Solaris Patches available to the users. I was searching the list on Oracle's site it's hard to determine which patch is critcal or not. When I type uname -a this is what returns Generic_142909-17.
Any help you could provide would be appreciated.Sorry, I wrote "Monthly" when I meant to write "Quarterly". Apologies for the confusion. My bad.
From - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/alerts-086861.html
They are released on the Tuesday closest to the 15th day of January, April, July and October. Starting 2011, the scheduled dates for the release of Critical Patch Updates will be on the Tuesday closest to the 17th day of January, April, July and October. The next four dates are:
* 19 April 2011
* 19 July 2011
* 18 October 2011
* 17 January 2012
The CPU for the Solaris Operating System is a rebranded snapshot of the Recommended OS Cluster. The rebranding involves only superficial changes to the patch cluster, with the actual patch content remaining unchanged. The patches contained in this patch cluster are considered the most important and highly recommended patches for Solaris 10. They provide the least amount of change required to address known security, data corruption and availability issues.
If there's a particular CVE Alert which you're vulnerable to or interested in, then the fix will be released within the patch that corresponds to the area of code the vulnerability affects. You can then apply that patch and it's requirements separate to the clusters. Next time you apply the cluster it will either install the latest rev of the patch or skip it if you have the latest installed already.
The Recommended Patch Cluster bundle is a much larger collection of patches and contains all the latest patches (at the time of release) which include Solaris updates, Security, and Sun Alert fixes. Note that we merged "Recommended Patch Cluster/Kernel Jumbo Patchset" and the "Sun Alert Patch Clusters" back in June 2010. See http://blogs.sun.com/patch/entry/merging_the_solaris_recommended_and for more information regarding what happened and why.
Of course there will be a large overlap between the "Recommended OS Cluster" and the "Critical Patch Updates" patchsets will be rolled in to the "Recommended OS Cluster" whenever it's cut and released.
There's a lot of information in the README files for each cluster so you may want to read those to understand the subtle differences.

Regarding v440 sun solaris server

I get the following error:-

Can anybody tell me is there any harm with this syn flood attack .If yes then hoe i will rectify it.You might consider seeking assistance in a security forum
or (maybe) in a networking forum that discusses firewall configurations.
That excerpt from your logs do not show a hardware issue.
Thus your inquiry is outside the scope of this forum.

Any quick documentation to setup OSB for a WIndows server running Oracle 9i

On Sun fire v490 - Solaris 10 with Oracle 8.1.7.4 & Sybase 12.0
Hi,
We are going to upgrade our server with this configuration -
Sun Fire V490 2 x 1.05 GHz UltraSPARC IV CPU
8096MB RAM 2 x73GB local disk
2x FC 2GB Sun/QLogic HBAs
DAT72
On one machine we will have Sun Solaris v10 with
Oracle DB v8.1.7.4 & Second one will be Sun Solaris v10 with Sybase DB v12.0.0.6.
Now our question is - Sun fire have Hyper-thread CPUs will the O/S and databases (Oracle and Sybase) view the proposed system as a true 4 CPU platform? Will parameters used to tune the database such as Sybase max online engines still operate in the same manner as before?
Our old machine configuration was - Sun E450 4x400MHz CPU 1024MB RAM 2 x18; 8x36GB disksQuestions on Oracle and Sybase should be directed to a database forum, this forum is for Sun hardware support.
Here is a link to a DB forum I look at from time to time:
http://www.dbforums.com/index.php
The topic of tuning Oracle or Solaris is way beyond the scope of this forum, I have attempted to go into it before but didn't get any feedback and I would only like to spend lots of time on it if I was being paid!!! On the memory side, keep in mind that Oracle 9i 64-bit can address a maximum of 2 ^ 64 ( 16777216 TB ) memory, prior to that the DBA had to define memory parameters in init.ora. To be honest the last time I worked with a Oracle 8 database I shut a HP K class server down permanently that had been migrated to Oracle 9i on Solaris by an Oracle consultant and I can't remember all the tuning trick etc. -
