Sun Studio 10 Linux 20050808 on RHEL 4 (AMD 64)

Hi,
I'm using a Sun Fire V20z (2x AMD 250, 4GB RAM) under RHEL 4 (64 bit). I'm testing the Sun Studio 10 20050808, and I'm running into trouble (lik e the problem reported on Gentoo) : when compiling a FORTRAN code, I got :

  • Sun Studio 10 Linux, RHEL3 U4, install fails on openmotif21.

    Hello everyone,
As a long-time user of Sun WorkShop... I mean Forte.. I mean Studio; it was with great anticipation that I downloader Sun Studio 10 for Linux.
On one machine it failed to install and on another it installed properly.
    Here are the details:
    - Machine 1: RHEL3 U2 (x86/i686), small install: Installation of Studio 10 went fine.
    - Machine 2: RHEL3 U4 (x86/i686), complete install : Installation of Studio 10 failed. The following can be gathered from the logs under /var/opt/sun:

rpm: Skipping rpm remove of sun-svc-locale-zh-10.0-1, not installed.
    [....snip....]
And everything is removed. Is this issue documented somewhere? Is there a workaround?
    Thanks for reading,
    Vincent

Deselecting 'system supporting packages' from the Sun Studio 10 installation list made the trick and Studio finished installing.
However, I have a few concerns:
    1) Since Studio will be using the system's openmotif, will it be supported? (I guess not).
    2) Since openmotif-2.1.31-2_IST.i386.rpm from the Studio 10 IDE kits lands under /usr/OpenMotif-2.1.31 and should not conflict with any kind of other/system openmotif, why didn't SUN just create a sun-openmotif-support package? This would prevent a naming conflict when trying to install on RHEL3 if RHEL's openmotif21 is already installed?
    3) It appears to work fine, even without SUN's provided openmotif.
    Cheers,
    Vincent

  • How to change Makefile file name in sun studio for linux 11?

    Greetings,
For historical reasons, our makefiles are called Make.bld
Sun Studio refuses to accept these as makefiles.
It'd be a big pain to modify our entire build system to take makefile as the name.
Is there a way to instruct sun studio to accept a different filename for makefiles ?
    Thanks,
    Bill

There is no supported way of getting the Sun Studio IDE (or NetBeans) to recognize
Make.bld as a Makefile. However, the solution Nik pointed out with a .nbattrs file will
    work.
Here is a complete file which, if copied to each directory containing a Make.bld file
will work. However, if the directory already contains a .nbattrs file you should edit
the existing one and add the <fileobject>...</fileobject> lines rather than overwriting
    the entire file.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE attributes PUBLIC "-//NetBeans//DTD DefaultAttributes 1.0//EN"
    <attributes version="1.0">
    <fileobject name="Make.bld">
    <attr name="MAKEFILE_TYPE" stringvalue="foo"/>
    </fileobject>
    </attributes>
Note: I split the DOCTYPE line myself. It should be a single line in the file (although
its probably OK if split, I didn't verify that so I'll suggest a single line).
I should warn you that the next release of the Sun Studio IDE will no longer use
.nbattrs files and you'll need a different solution. A preliminary version of the next
release is currently available by downloading Sun Studio Express 3. The IDE is
significantly better than the current one! You also get a lot of the same features
by downloading NetBeans 5.5 with the C/C++ Development Pack.

  • Sun studio patches on linux: how to deal with?

    hello all,
on solaris 10, i'm using a tool like pca (1) to maintain sun studio up to date.
But on linux, i don't know how to do the same process?
I've a Centos on a Sun x2270, i've installed SS21u1 with rpms, and sometimes, i go to the patches website, and do the painful job of installing the latest patches.
Is there another way? or a better process to get the latest rpms available?
For instance, on solaris 10, pca loads afile name patchdiag.xref, in which i can find patches related to Sun Studio on Linux:
    grep -i 'Studio 12' /var/tmp/patchdiag.xref | grep -i Linux | awk -F\| '{print $1}'
    124874
    124877
    126497
    126997
    127145
    127149
    127154
    127158
    141856
    141859
142367after that, i have to use pca with -r (README) flags, to find the name of the rpms:
    Files included with this patch:
    Note:
        sun-cpl-12.1-5.i386.rpm
        sun-cplx-12.1-5.x86_64.rpm
        sun-scl-12.1-5.i386.rpm
        sun-sclx-12.1-5.x86_64.rpm
        sun-stl4o-12.1-5.i386.rpm
        sun-stl4x-12.1-5.x86_64.rpm
        sun-tll7-12.1-5.i386.rpm
sun-tll7x-12.1-5.x86_64.rpmthen, on linux, i have to query if the rpm is installed:
    bash-3.2# rpm -qa|grep sun-cpl
    sun-cpl-12.1-4
    sun-cplx-12.1-4and install it if needed:
sudo rpm -Fvh /tmp/128230-04/*.rpmthanks in advance for help,
    gerard

    Thanks Julien for this information.
For a SCD Type 1 dimension I used IKM Oracle Incremental Update module and when I execute the interface I get ORA-01031: insufficient privileges error message because I have only read access on the source system. Based on your suggestion, ODI shouldn't access/need source system for staging purposes.
What did I do wrong then?
According with ODI documentation, IKM Oracle Incremental Update module: Integrates data in an Oracle target table in incremental update mode. This IKM creates a temporary staging table to stage the data flow. It then compares its content to the target table to guess which records should be inserted and which others should be updated. It also allows performing data integrity check by invoking the CKM. Inserts and updates are done in bulk set-based processing to maximize performance. Therefore, this IKM is optimized for large volumes of data. Consider using this IKM if you plan to load your Oracle target table to insert missing records and to update existing ones. If you plan to use this IKM with very large tables, you should consider enhancing this IKM by removing the MINUS set-based operator. To use this IKM, the staging area must be on the same data server as the target.

  • Sun Studio MPI Tracing in OpenMPI?

    Hello all,
I recently downloaded an installed Sun Studio 12.1 on a RHEL 5.5 system running OpenMPI. I didn't see anything mentioned on the OpenMPI website or the documentation from Sun that I've looked through so far relating to the MPI tracing flags that need to be issued with the OpenMPI installation.
When I invoke analyzer test1.er/ it says that Warning: no MPI tracing data file in experiment...MPI Timeline and MPI Charts will not be available.
Is there a build flag or configure flag I need to add to the OpenMPI installation to get this option to work? Any advice on getting the MPI tracing to work is appreciated. Also, it may be useful to note that I am trying to analyze a pre-compiled MPP program that I do not have the source to. Thanks.

Ok just tested it with the Hello_C program that comes with OpenMPI.
The test goes ok, there are a few warnings when I open analyzer though. It says basically that there were "too few clock-profile events (##) in experiment # (Processor #) for statistical validity
The MPI Trace and MPI Timeline windows did not come up by default but are up now that I enabled them through the menu again and it seems to work perfectly with the Hello_C program so I will try it with verbose mode on our FEA software to see what is going on specifically.
    Update:
When I run in verbose mode I see lines upon lines of VampirTrace:Tracing switched off at call stack level (2) multiple times and then immediately after it VampirTrace: Tracing switched on multiple times. This goes back and for well over a thousand lines interrupted sometimes by output form the FEA software.

From the testing I did, it appears to have these problems for most of the C++ programs I have written, especially the ones that involve object oriented programming. All programs that I wrote do not have these problems with g++ or Sun CC for Solaris. It does however work fine only for small fraction of the programs I have written. I dont quite understand why it works in some cases and others it doesnt, but I know for sure, that it should be working for all cases when Sun CC from Sun Studio 10 on Solaris 10 for X86 has no problems compiling the same programs.

I tried workaround number 2 from the 3 choices that were listed by horsh. That fixes the mathcalls.h problem but still I have the following errors.

Can someone please respond? There is more to the problem. Perhaps
there are more glibc headers that have problems. In addition, if Sun wants to port the Sun Studio Compilers for linux to be stable on all linux distributions I suggest using VM ware and installing several linux distrobutions as virtual machines and testing this software on each virtual machine to see the problems that occur on each distribution. That way you might be able to uncover more problems to find a solution that will work best for portability on all linux distributions.

Solaris 10 is not installable in my laptop, it doesnt support graphics, also i had tried opensolaris, it works without errors and it supports graphics,
but can i install Sun Studio 12 in that?Of course. You can do it using OpenSolaris package manager; no need to download, unpack, install - package manager will do it for you.

  • Problems with sun studio 12 in suse linux 11

    Hi.
I installed Sun Studio 12 suse linux with no problems. However, the debugging modules (DBX) are not working any more. When I started Sun Studio, it gave a message about modules that could not be loaded in tha moment. I did not pay attention. But I noticed that all debugging options were disabled.
Using the module manager, I saw the DBX module was not checked, and I could not change it. I was marked with a red X. So I thought to reinstall the application. However, the uninstall utility doesn't work either.
According with the documentation, running ./uninstaller does it, but I get the following error message instead
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: uninstall_Sun_Studio_12/class
    Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: uninstall_Sun_Studio_12.class
    at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:200)

    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:251)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(ClassLoader.java:319)
I tried to uninstall manually, and then execute installer, by using first the software manager in linux and deleting the producregistry file manually. It worked because I executed the installer. However, in Sun Studio IDE, debugging options are still not available despite I "reinstalled" the application. I checked the log files and they say the file uninstall_Sun_Studio_12.class could not be written.
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there any other way to repair Sun Studio? What could be the possible for this module to stop working?
    2. Does anyone have an idea of why the installer cannot write the uninstaller class?
I found that perhaps problems regarding Java / Netbeans versions could be the problem, but the ones I have installed are those packages that were installed along with Sun Studio, and both are valid.
    Thank you very much.

Perhaps you can simply delete the Sun Studio 12 installation tree, because it will not work on SUSE Linux 11.
This OS is not supported, so any problems you see with SS12 on SUSE 11 will not be fixed.
But we have a newer version, that should work better.
You can try to download and install Sun Studio Express 2008/11 (extract pre-installed image from tar.bz2 file).
Here is a pointer to the web page:
    http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/express
All you need is to provide a email address, and press "Download Now" button.
You will see a page, that gives you 2 options to download Sun Studio Express 2008/11.
Use "Option 2": Download Tarfile Installer
    Thanks,
    Nik

  • -nodisplay bug with Sun Studio 10 for Linux installer

I'm currently trying to install a trial Sun Studio 10 for Linux on a Fedora Core 3 box. I want the installer to run via the command line, so I use "./installer -nodisplay", but I get the following error message:
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /home/pacey/SS10/.install/jvm_1.4.2/j2re1.4.2_06/lib/i386/libawt.so: libXp.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
libXp is part of the X window system, but I've specified -nodisplay. A non-graphics option shouldn't be trying to load graphics libraries - looks like a bug. Anyway, as I don't have version 6 of that lib on my system, I'm stalled on this. Any suggestions?

  • Sun Studio 12 on Linux

    Hi,
I am currently porting a C++ application from Solaris to Linux,
Since we were using Sun Studio on Solaris, we planned to continue with Sun Studio 12. Our application in simple words is pretty huge and as such have some major issue. But I have the following query.
The C compiler cc is not recognising -KPIC option, I have tried -fpic and -kPIC, but seems to be failing and also -shared option is also not recognised.
But more than this, Could some please help us out with some valid documentation for compiler options, linker options for SUN STUDIO 12 compilers and linkers on LINUX
    With Regards
    Arun

The C compiler cc is not recognising -KPIC option, I have tried -fpic and -kPIC, but seems to be failing and also -shared option is also not recognised.Something is broken in your setup, probably you do not call Sun cc, or something like that.
suncc recognized -KPIC for ages and since Sun Studio 12 it recognizes both -fpic/-fPIC and -shared as well.
man cc should be fine, also docs.sun.com Sun Studio 12 collection should be up to date wrt Linux-specific parts.
We use system linker on Linux (gnu ld that is). You can use "suncc -Wl" and "sunCC -qoption ld" to pass options to linker.
Please, verify that your cc is from Sun Studio 12 (cc -V should specify version 5.9).
    regards,
    __Fedor.

  • Sun studio 11 for linux

i successfully installed sun studio on a linux machine. i am debugging my first program.
the problem i am having is local variables (stack variables) do not show the correct
values. i can tell by the execution and examining the results that the local variables are
really correct, but what is displayed is garbage. global/static variables display the
correct values. anyone else having such an issue ?

Sun Studio debugger has supported gcc/g++ for a while now, so
that feature should definately work. Let us know more information
about the bug, so we can fix it.
If you have time and interest to experiment with pre-release compilers,
you could download the latest "Sun Studio Express" release, and try
out an early access version of the Sun compilers on Linux. But there
are still a few things that don't work right. C should be very robust by now,
but the Sun C++ and Fortran compilers still have some more porting
work to finish before all the compiler features are available on Linux.

gmake -j > build.log 2>&1Any idea about what is going wrong?
    Thanks.

Possibly the actual CC (or cc) command lines are not correct. The proper way to say not to link libCstd is the command-line option -library=no%Cstd. Then you don't need to add the default system libraries like -lc to the command line.
Can you show the actual CC command lines that are generated by the makefile? They should be in the compilation log. I'd also like to see the command line(s) used to create dynamic libraries, if any, and the final executable.

  • Sun Studio 12 - Memory allocation issue

I am porting an old code from Solaris to Linux (RHEL). The code allocates a large memory block using the malloc() command, but the command fails on Linux when the size exceeds 128 Mb (I have 4Gb of RAM).
I have tried increasing the heap size in the netbeans conf file with no luck.
    Any ideas?

Can you try running the app from a terminal and see if it works (for a cleaner experiment, don't close Sun Studio since it might consume a considerable amount of memory for a larger project)?
As to ulimit, it actually makes sense to check it, but what you really need to check is ulimit of the process started by Sun Studio, because there's a small chance that it actually changes something before forking. You can try to check that by temporarily changing "build output" of your project to
    /bin/bash -c "ulimit -c"and running it.
