Sun Studio 12 - Memory allocation issue
I am porting an old code from Solaris to Linux (RHEL). The code allocates a large memory block using the malloc() command, but the command fails on Linux when the size exceeds 128 Mb (I have 4Gb of RAM).
I have tried increasing the heap size in the netbeans conf file with no luck.
Any ideas?
Can you try running the app from a terminal and see if it works (for a cleaner experiment, don't close Sun Studio since it might consume a considerable amount of memory for a larger project)?
As to ulimit, it actually makes sense to check it, but what you really need to check is ulimit of the process started by Sun Studio, because there's a small chance that it actually changes something before forking. You can try to check that by temporarily changing "build output" of your project to
/bin/bash -c "ulimit -c"and running it.

Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues
Hi all
I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
The error messages are :
"Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.
Cheers
Neil Hughes

Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

Greetings !!
I'm trying in an Applet to connect to a mysql database but the Applet fails everytime.
It works perfectly in console environnement with the same javaconnector.
I read this:
+Classpath. Specifies the path to the classes that the IDE uses. By default the IDE uses its internal class path, which includes all mounted filesystems and various directories in the IDE's installation and user directories. The IDE ignores your CLASSPATH environment variable. Click the ellipsis button to display a property editor in which you can change the class path settings.+
So my CLASSPATH environnement variable is passed by (as I redoubted) but I don't know why even specifying classpathes in Options/Building/Compiler Types/internal compilations/expert/class path the I got the same behaviour from the Applet... is there another way to specify that this Driver* is located in */usr/share/java/mysql-connector-java-5.1.7-bin.jar* ??
I also added the jar files in Options/IDE configuration/System/File System settings/java librairies but same behaviour again... but when compiling the output windows indicates that it has finished jdbc... that's all, the Applet still can't open a connexion with the mysql server...
Can somebody could explain to me how set up the IDE to use this javaconnector in order to connect to the mysql database ?
Thank you for your time...

Illustrator CS2 Memory Allocation Issue
I have a client who uses illustrator cs2 and whenever anyone uses illustrator to open enough files to cause illustrator.exe to consume 750mb of ram "through task manager" it says "An unknown error has occured"
Now i have tested this on around 6 different computers all with varying specs everyone with at least 2gb of ram and all core2duo or better and the problem is consistant across the board, i have searched through almost every google search possible relating to this issue with no avail, the issue does not persist in photoshop cs2 and you cannot directly allocate more ram to illustrator, i have also made changes to the page file making it up to 3 times as big as max memory. It seems to be some limitation of the memory that can be used by illustrator. Could anyone who has experienced such a problem or has illustrator and can try opening enough files to reach a peak of around 750mb mem use see if they experience the same issue.
The file sizes they are opening are only around 5mb but once opened consume around 300mb of mem. At this stage they dont want to upgrade to cs4 until there is some proof that this is indeed a limitation of cs2.
Any help would be much appreciated.
CheersOk, Just because i have spent so much time researching this and it seems to be a recurring reported issue with abode users. I will attempt to summarise my findings and the resolution we used.
Firstly i would like to say that adobe has the worst call centre i have ever encountered with a 4 hour hold to speak to a SALES person before hanging up this occured between 12pm and 4pm aest on thursday 27/08/2009, I would never recommend calling adobe if your time is worth anything to you, because it is certainly worth nothing to adobe. *breath* I guess that can do this because they are the only feasable graphic solution available in their market segment, seems like microsoft of the graphic design world. Anyway, enough rant.
What i found was that adobe did not support working over a network share and went about fixing this issue a number of years ago, their solution which is more of a work around was to create version cue, So anyone who encounters constantly corrupt files while operating over a network must deploy and use version cue, the current supported version cs4 has numerous issues specifically with the check in and checkout procedure, the only way you can prevent data lose in the event of a windows crash (obviously a common occurance) is to checkin in your data regularly as saving will only keep a copy if adobe drive remains open, this results in numerous versions and kinda makes saving redundant as saving is only temporarily keeps your work for the session.
CS4 is much more stable and i have not encountered any issues with limitations of the ammount of virtual memory assigned i have had around 30 open at one time and no issues, overall a much better and more stable product that cs2, too bad they couldnt implement a better version control system, i am also very iffy about moving this data to another server.
Thanks to all who contributed and the assistance recieved by this community, way more helpful than adobe technical support. -
Video Card Memory Allocation Issue with SW:TOR
I am attempting to run SW:TOR on a duel-boot iMac running both iOS X Lion (10.7.2) and Windows 7 via Boot Camp. I have the game installed on the Windows 7 side, but because it is an iMac, my video card (ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB) is integrated.
The error I receive is of course general and non descriptive beyond "your computer does not meet the system requirements for the game" but all performance tests I have ran blow away all the minimum recommended requirements.
It looks like it is narrowed down to VRAM and the application is not seeing all of the 512 MB.
I've already updated all drivers, trying various combinations between Mac, MS, an Component OEM recommendations.
Any suggestions on what I can look at / check?
Or, since I am in the Windows 7 side, would this question be more approptiatly placed on some Microsoft forum?Quick time istalled on the Windows side? That got me up and running.
Good luck. -
Sun Studio 12 & Qt development (dbx issues)
Hi,
I'm trying to replace KDevelop with Sun Studio 12.
Everything seems to be fine, just the debugger is causing problems:
First errors occure while starting a debug session on a test application:
Reading libXfixes.so.3
Reading libexpat.so.1
Reading librt.so.1
Reading libk5crypto.so.3
Reading libcom_err.so.2
Reading libkrb5support.so.0
dbx: forward reference `_List_base<QVariant,std::allocator<QVariant> >' not defined, see `help forwardref'
dbx: forward reference `_List_base<QVariant,std::allocator<QVariant> >' not defined, see `help forwardref'
dbx: forward reference `_List_base<QVariant,std::allocator<QVariant> >' not defined, see `help forwardref'
dbx: forward reference `_List_base<QVariant,std::allocator<QVariant> >' not defined, see `help forwardref'
dbx: forward reference `_List_base<QVariant,std::allocator<QVariant> >' not defined, see `help forwardref'
dbx: forward reference `_List_base<QVariant,std::allocator<QVariant> >' not defined, see `help forwardref'A "help forwardref" didn't give me any clue about a solution.
The breakpoint I set before starting the debugger causes another error:
(dbx) stop at "/work/suntest/test/testmodule.cpp":451
dbx: cannot find object file corresponding to "/work/suntest/test/testmodule.cpp"Well.. the obj-file is in the .obj-dir. Duh! Weird.
Some time later, when all libs and the application is loaded, I set the breakpoint again - successfully. Even more weird.
dbx even breaks on the breakpoint.
But stepping over the code causes problems again. The IDE opens "qshared.h" and the dbx console shows the following error:
dbx: forward reference `_List_base<QVariant,std::allocator<QVariant> >' not defined, see `help forwardref'I give up for now. Back to KDevelop again. sigh
All kind of help is very welcome!
Bye
- muesleeWhat Linux version are you using? Only a few Linux variants are supported. (Variations among all of the Linux distros is a big nuisance for commercial Linux products.)
You might just need to build some of your C++ debug libraries with Sun compilers. Even if the run-time ABI is compatible, the debug data is different. Things will probably improve over time. Meanwhile, posting issues here might be a good way to help keep the Sun developers informed. -
Two compile issues with Sun Studio 12 @ x86(_64 = amd64)
The following two issues are absent on Solaris 10 SPARC and all previous Sun Studio versions (8 to 11), but present on both amd64 Solaris 10 and Linux 2.6 versions:
1. mozilla.org's Spidermonkey "JavaScript" (ECMAscript) can't be compiled with it: in file jsinterp.c an endless loop is entered by the optimizer in level -xO1 and higher (!). With no optimization, linking is impossible (unresolved symbols from jsinterp.o), which hints to defunct output.
2. the optimizer (ube) is crashing in sources with a switch with many many case labels in optimization level -xO3 and higher with a segfault.I have trouble to seperate a reasonable (example) source out of our complex sources showing the second issue --- what I can already tell is, that the following special pragma has to do with it (while I'm now in doubt that the each 256 case labels per switch, two switches in an if else clause have to do with it):
#pragma opt 0 (func_name)
Own1 Own2 func_name(...)
The buggy versions I can tell you: they are
on Solaris 10 amd64:
/opt/SUNWspro/bin/cc -V
cc: Sun C 5.9 SunOS_i386 2007/05/03
/opt/SUNWspro/prod/bin/ube -V
ube: Sun Compiler Common 12 SunOS_i386 2007/05/03
on GNU/Linux:
cc -V
cc: Sun C 5.9 Linux_i386 2007/05/03
ube -V
ube: Sun Compiler Common 12 Linux_i386 2007/05/03
The only important compiler option in this regard seems to be the optimization level, but the situation is complex too, if others should be also involved. I will investigate further... -
Check memory leak using sun studio 10
Hi,
I'm using sun studio 10 to find the memory leak. I pre loaded the librtc.so and attached the process. Then I set the break point at the beginning of scenairo and the end of scenario. Then I trigger the event and program flow hits the break point at the beginning of scenairo, I try to enable the "Memory Check". Then I continue my application. But, I don't see anything show up in the "memory check" tab in the debug window.
Is anyone there who know what is the problem here? Appreciate your help.

I marked settings that would probably need closer attention. Easies way to troubleshoot the problem is to set everything to unlimited and see if it helps.
Also, check if you have enough swap - Sun Studio needs at least one gig of swap and 512 RAM (see http://docs.sun.com/source/820-2973/release_notesML.html#SystemReqs). -
Strange C++ error when using newer Sun Studio compiler
My company has just set up a new build machine for our product. We have gone from
this version: CC: Sun C++ 5.7 Patch 117830-11 2007/04/04
to this one: CC: Sun C++ 5.9 SunOS_sparc Patch 124863-01 2007/07/25
we have also upgraded the OS (solaris/sparc). I think the new one has gcc but the old one doesn't (we don't use it).
and now I am getting this error:

I have no idea what could be causing this. I can find one link to it on this forum: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9488983 . But the only answer to that query says it is the same as another bug which appears entirely different, not to mention being very old (while talking about an imminent fix), and being related to a different OS and (I think) a different version of sun studio (express vs. normal?).
Any ideas? Could it be related to having gcc/g++ on the machine?Hi,

Assembly error on Sun Studio 11 - Solaris 10/amd64
Hi All
I am compiling my source code using cc. My cc version is
cc: Sun C 5.8 2005/10/13
I am using Sun Studio 11 and Solaris 10 on amd64 for my build.
I am getting following Assemply errors when compiling my code.

asm(" .A9999:");
asm(" popl %ebx"); /* restore the register */
return(r);
Can someone let me know if this is a Compiler issue or it has something to do with my code .
I'll Appreciate any help on this.
Thanks in Advance
SomakIf you specify -S compiler option, assembly file will be produced and it enables you to look at the code assembler is complaining about. For example:
/ASM
pushl %ebx <== line 31
/ASMEND
I'm not too familiar with AMD64 ABI, but it is possible that you can't use 32-bit registers in 64 bit mode with some operations like memory (including stack) access.
I was able to compile code with the following changes:
asm(" movl $1,%eax"); /* this 1 inworking reg will set x /
asm(" pushl %rbx"); /* save the register; eax already saved */
asm(" movl 8(%rbp),%ebx"); /* move the address of x */
asm(" xchg %eax,(%rbx)"); /* atomic swap a one with x /
asm(" cmp $0,%eax"); /* test what was in x /
asm(" jnz .A9999"); /* jump if x was already set /
r = 1; /* indicate set occurred */
asm(" .A9999:");
asm(" popl %rbx"); /* restore the register */ -
Problem in dynamic memory allocation
Hi,
My name is Ravi Kumar. I'm working on a project to improve organizational performance which include visual studio for simulation. I'm using dynamic memory allocation to allocate space for the array that are used in the program. Now I have run-time error
which I can't understand where it is going wrong. Can someone please help me regrading this issue.
If anyone interested in helping please leave a comment with your email id so that I will share the whole project folder.

Sun Studio 12 takes lot of time to startup
Hi,
When I try to use sunstudio 12 on a Solaris 10 U6 x86 box, it takes ages to open the UI window.
The window kind of hung state with out any messges showing in it until it comes up with full screen.
Debugging from sunstudio takes lot of time when we try step to the code.
Is this a known issue?. Any workaround?.
The Solaris system has 8GB RAM and plenty of disk space.
ThanksThank you for the report! No, it is not a known issue.
I use Sun Studio IDE on Solaris 10 x86 system with 2 Gb memory.
Its responsiveness is ok (though sometimes it parses my projects
for 10-20 seconds, but it happens only 2-3 times per day).
The "startup" time is about 20-30 seconds.
Let's try to find out what is the problem on your system.
Can you run "sunstudio" under "truss -d" and look at the log file?
Here is the command:
truss -d -a -e -f -o ss.tr sunstudio --userdir /tmp/newuserdir It will create a log file "ss.tr" in current directory. Open it in a text editor,
and look for long actions. Probably there is something in your HOME
directory, that causes these delays.
If you don't see anything suspicious, let me know. I'll take a look at the
log file (though it can be several Mb, so we have to find out how to send it).
Thanks,

General and specific questions on the applicability of Sun Studio 11
Hi. In an e-mail letter from Sun Microsystems I read about Sun Studio 11 to "utilize its record-setting parallelizing compilers." From this message I was attracted by the possibility of adding something like parallel processing, not by changing the processor (hardware), but by adding Sun-Studio-11 software to a Linux operating system. Now I already have a Fortran compiler, the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux, which is free and can handle Cray-style pointers, a feature hard to find in a free Fortran compiler.
1a. So for the most basic of questions, without having parallel-processing hardware, just an ordinary processor [a 1-GigaHertz (GHz) Advanced MicroDevices Duron central processing unit, in my case], is it possible to have parallel processing and thereby increase one's computing speed by installing Sun Studio 11 in a Linux operating system?
1b. If so, by what factor could one expect the speed of computation to increase over not having Sun Studio 11 installed? (If the gain in speed is dependent on the type of computations being performed, I imagine possibly using a Fortran code to perform numerical calculations using and perhaps searching for minima or maxima in a two-or-more-dimensional surface. So please give me an idea of the sort of gain in speed one could expect for these two types of activites, calculations using formulas and searches for minima and maxima among already-computed quantities.)
1c. Again if so, how could one just by adding software have parallel processing without two or more hardware processors? In other words, what is the basic working principle of the software to make the simultaneous performance of multiple tasks (multitasking or parallel processing) possible?
2a. Does Sun Studio 11 include a Fortan compiler?
2b. If so, must one use it to have parallel processing with Sun Studio 11?
2c. Or will the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux work with Sun Studio 11 to have a parallel processing capability?
Concerning hardware requirements I read that Sun Studio 11 requires a minimum of 512 MegaBytes (MB) of memory, presumably Random Access Memory (RAM). My Hewlett-Packard, ZE1110, Pavilion, notebook computer has 256 MB of RAM, but is expandable to a maximum of 512 MB of RAM. So in this respect it is in principle at least technically possible for me to meet the minimum system requirement for Sun Studio 11 with my computer, if I choose to increase its RAM. Somehow accommodating the cost of such a RAM addition, including whether one may have to buy two, matching, 256-MB RAM modules or just presumably one additional 256-RAM module, is another requirement. But before spending money for such an upgrade, one should first thoroughly investigate other matters to determine if other things are going to work and to determine what gain, if any, one could expect in computing speed with Sun Studio 11 and an additional 256 MB of RAM; then decide, based on such data, whether the purchase is personally worth the money or not. That's one motivation behind this posting; another motivation is for me to learn some things.
Lastly I would like to here thank whoever was thoughtful enough to provide the Sun Download Manager (SDM) 2.0, which allows the pausing and resumption of the 207-MB download studio11-lin-x86.tar.bz2 for the Linux version of the Sun Studio 11! Using a slow, dialup, Internet connection like mine having a maximum speed of 28.8 kilobits/second, this makes it possible to download that file over a number of Internet sessions instead of having to have an uninterrupted, 19-or-more-hour Internet session. Besides the invconvenience of tying up one's telephone line for that long a time, it might be even be difficult to have such an uninterrupted Internet session for that long a time. I have at least started such a download using the SDM 2.0 potentially over multiple Internet sessions. Whether or not I carry it out to completion could depend on whether everything looks good with Sun Studio 11 for my particular situation. Thanks in advance for your help. Thanks for both of your postings here. I'm mostly trying to learn something here.
From Maxim Kartashev: "For example, if one thread (or process, or lwp) frequently performs an I/O operation, then the other thread (process, lwp) can utilize processor resources to perform, say, some computations while first one waits for operation to complete."
I think I might understand what you meant above. I guess lwp in the above context stands for light-weight process. And I think you may be talking about a potential gain in speed with just one, ordinary processor. I guess you meant that one program, or perhaps group of programs, could perform input/output processes at the same time it is performing calculations because different parts of the processor are being used in these two groups of processes. Then on "while first one waits for operation to complete" I guess you meant that if the input/output operations finish before the computations finish, then thread 1 that was performing the input/output operations will have to wait until the current computations ordered by thread 2 are complete before thread 1 can utilize the computational resources for its own computations; i.e., two threads can't use the same computational resources of an ordinary processor at the same time. How is my thinking so far, Maxim, right, partly right, or all wrong?
Now if the above thinking of mine is right, then it appears that one could have some gain in speed doing things like you suggest with just one, ordinary processor. And if so, I imagine that the gain could be a maximum of a factor of two for a program that requires spending as much time in input and output as it does in computation; i.e., keeping both the computational and input/output resources working all of the time without the input/output resources waiting on the computational resources or vice versa. How is my thinking here?
If the above thinking is correct, just for purposes of discussion with just one, ordinary processor, not a dual processor, and a program which does nothing but computations there would be no gain in speed using Sun Studio 11 and a Fortran compiler over not using Sun Studio 11. In other words, to increase the speed of computation one would have to buy a faster computer, buy parallel processing hardware for an existing computer and use parallel-processing software, or somehow figure out how to harness two or more computers to work for you at the same time with instructions from one piece or perhaps set of pieces of code set up for parallel processing using two or more different computers. The latter case would be a computer analogue or "two 'heads' are better than one," not human heads, but computers. How is my thinking here?
Here I am still assuming that it is possible for one processor to be used to do two different kinds things at once. However, I don't see how one Fortran program could instruct two things to be done at once. This is because I have not seriously studied parallel processing, I suppose. That is I am used to a sequential set of instructions that proceed from top to botton down the lines of code; i.e., one instruction or line of code can't be executed until the line of code before it has been completely executed. That is the computing "world" with which I am familiar. So how about someone here teaching me with an example of parallel-processing Fortran code how parallel processing works, explaining what instruction or group of instructions tells the computer to execute input and computational instructions at the same time?
Based on the encouraging information from one or more other people I have been able to use the Intel Fortran for Linux 8.1.024, if I remember correctly, in a computer with a 1-GigaHertz (GHz), Advanced MicroDevices (A.M.D.), Duron Processor. So this is at least one case where it is not essential to have an Intel processor to use the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux 8.1.024.
Is the Sun Fortran compiler free for personal use? And can it handle Cray-style pointers? -

I googled "SSServiceTagSupport.java:257" and found out that it is filed as IZ 154094 against Netbeans:
http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=154094
Actually it was reported many times:
http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=151921
It suggests a few workarounds.
Workaround 1:
"Simple workaround is to disable registration using command line option -J-Dnb.registration.enabled=false"
Workaround 2:
"The file ~/.netbeans-registration/6.5/registration.xml is empty, so I have this file erased and restarted the IDE.
After this step, the file was not regenerated, but the IDe starts now without this problem."
Please, try one of them.
