@SUN: Sun VirtualBox 3.1 + VM "Teleportation" ... for VDI 3.1 too?

I just checked my Facebook account and there I got the announcement from Sun that VirtualBox 3.1 was released today and that it has an exciting new feature: VM "Teleportation". So running VM's can be live migrated without interruption between VirtualBox servers. Awesome!
BUT:
Will we get a special VDI version too? If anything then "Teleportation" is a must-have feature for Sun VDI. Will there be a patch that adds this new VirtualBox version to VDI ...?

Just simply load balancing? Or something more?I often encounter potential customers who'd be interested to buy Sun VDI but they shy away from such thoughts because they realise that the VMware ESX license costs they would have to spend money for will be killing them financially. And they don't see VirtualBox as a "good enough" alternative: It's a "toy", it can't do live migration (e.g. with VMware if they wanted that feature one day they could simply license it and "unlock" it), it's not a bare metal hypervisor ....
So now I could at least counter the point about VirtualBox not being able to do live migrations because now it can do that and there are no additional licenses to pay and no features to unlock. The feature is there from start. So that's good.
But the other issues remain: it's not "bare metal". It would have been nice to have some sort of true "VirtualBox Server" or "VirtualBox for VDI -- Bare Metal Edition". Sun had such a product in the pipelines: "Sun xVM Server" ... but this product was killed after EA #2. Silly move, IMHO. It would have been wiser to finish this product and then have Sun VDI support it as virtualisation backend as well.
Talking of which: Any chance that Sun VDI might one day support the various XEN-based products that exist? If I am not mistaken Sun's "xVM" hypervisor in Solaris/OpenSolaris is in principle just another XEN implementation too. And then there is "Oracle VM" .... so in light of the merger with Oracle I'd say it would make sense if Solaris xVM and Oracle VM/Xen were supported as well. I find it odd that XEN-based products which are widely used in certain circles (e.g. Universities) are being omitted but that there is support for Microsoft Hyper-V which is so brand new and still so lacking in the features department that it is hardly used by anyone except by some paid "early adopters" ...

  • Sun's VirtualBox 2.1

Just downloaded latest version of Sun's VirtualBox 2.1 yesterday and impressed with it so far, having tried Ubuntu and just-released SuSE 11.1 (which I prefer so far).

I'm running Vista x64 natively, along with Sun xVM VirtualBox, with SuSE (x64) and Ubuntu (x32) in VMs on Mac Pro.

Am I correct in assuming you are using the Windows x64 version of Virtualbox 2.1 on your Mac Pro and not the Mac OS X version?
Nice to see that it works well. I intend to test it on my PC running Windows Server 2003 x64, as I absolutely won't use Vista.
Are you not running Mac OS X on your Mac Pro anymore?

I downloaded the zip file to the start menu directory on my Pocket PC as indicated in the readme file. But when I go to execute the zip file I get a message saying that there is no application associated with the file and I should run the application first and then open the file from within the application. Does Pocket PC not support zip files. Any help on how to get this installed would be greatly appreciated.

    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Colin, just to reassure you, I just bought a cheap D-Link 10/100/1000 8 port switch and replaced by old 10/100 one. I replaced the two cables (Powerbook and G5) with proper Cat5e ones and my node works just fine at opposite ends of the house. Luckily the house wiring I installed was Cat5e already. For some reason Logic has trouble compensating for latency on the EXS24 sampler, but all the other processes seem to have no latency at all. I tested the two machines in the same room with 1 metre CAT5e cables, and the latency is exactly the same. One thing to watch is that even when Logic tells you that it is processing particular tracks on the node, it actually doesn't seem to lessen the CPU load on the host until it absolutely has to. One particular song of mine has about 80% CPU on my Powerbook, and at one point in the song would very often stop with an overload message. Now with the node engaged it STILL shows 80% host CPU, but the difference is that when I reach the dangerous part, Node activity shows up on the meter, and I don't get the error. Cool!

    "dodgy power board"
If it were really a hardware issue then I would expect the link drop to be random and not exactly every 5min 30sec consistently every day all day. A hardware issue would be more intermittent.
    "setdefaults"
Yeah, I think you're right on this. I was trying to avoid it but like you said I really do feel like I've tried everything else. Kind of going to stink losing my settings but hey if it fixes it then it'll be worth it.
"tried having a link up to the serial"
Yes, I have. It prints out "SC System Rebooted" every 5min 30sec just like in the log files and on the NET MGT port. Of course, the serial link does not drop because...well, it's serial. :) But I do see the message. Doesn't say anything else like "Help Me! It hurts!" Hehehe.
    "loopback"
Unfortunately I don't have a crimp tool or cable to create an ethernet loopback cable. Otherwise that would be a great experiment. :-/

  • Supported Configurations for VDI 3.1

I have a question about the supported configurations for VDI 3.1.
We have a small office where we would have only about 12-15 desktops and would be using the VirtualBox virtualization platform with VDI. The standard vbox configuration recommends 4-5 servers depending on whether you have one of the VirtualBox hosts sharing a machine with the primary VDI node or not. The only other supported configuration is a single host configuration where everything resides on one physical host (and thus one big single point of failure).
My question is can you have a modified version of the single-host configuration for small office environments? For example, I have two X4240 servers with 4x 136GB hard drives each. I know the VDI hosts need to be on three different hosts to satisfy the MySQL clustering configuration. So can I have something like the following on only three boxes?
[Sun VDI Primary] on a small (Dual Core CPU, 2 or 4GB RAM) X86 server
[Sun VDI Secondary + Virtual Box desktop services + Storage services] on X4240 (2x Quad Core CPU, 16GB RAM)
[Sun VDI Secondary + Virtual Box desktop services + Storage services] on X4240 (2x Quad Core CPU, 16GB RAM)
I'm just trying to design a configuration for a small office environment that uses the fewest servers but at the same time is not one big single point of failure as would be the case with a single host configuration.
    Any suggestions would be welcomed...
    Thanks in advance,
    -Ken

When trying to burn a DVD it will go through the encoding step and at 98% we see the message 'data rate for this file is too high for DVD.  You must replace this file with one of a lower data rate".  We need help to correct this so we can complete burning to DVD.

  • SQL 2012 failover cluster\mirroring VS AlwaysOn for VDI?

Hi, we have to build high availability SQL 2012 cluster for VDI and we have two options. One option is to build a server cluster with combination of failover and mirroring and other option is to build failover cluster with AlwaysOn.
We are not sure which option to chose. We have contacted Microsoft support to provide us some documents and instructions for failover\mirroring combination but they have send us instructions for AlwaysOn option.
What would be best way to build high availability cluster for VDI? Also, since first option is very complicated, we would appreciated if someone could provide us with some documentation for it (how to build it, what to look out for, etc.) because that is the probably the option we are going to use.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Install and configure Hyper V for VDI

    Hi Everyone
I am trying to setup a POC lab using Hyper-V to demonstrate use case for VDI
I do understand you need to have 2012R2 connection brokers and RDSH servers as part of the VDI deployment.
Coming from a vmware background I have much to learn in this area. I have 4 HS22 blades installed with 2012R2 Datacentre and configured teaming for the management Network. All 4 2012R2 host presented with shared storage from our SAN. On each host there are
6 NIC . 2 is for management / migration ?? and the rest of the 4 Nic is for the VM data network
On the management Teaming Nic, I have setup 2 NIC in independent mode with load balancing Dynamic. The second nic is set as Standby Adapter.
Before I enable the Hyper V role , I would like to find out the best practice for setting up 2012R2 HyperV for VDI ? Do I need a seprate migration network or use the same management teaming Nic ? And Where do use specify in hyper to use this network for
    vm migration between host.
In Vsphere we use port group to assign different Vlan for each VMs. You can have multiple Port groups (with vlan id)  belongs to a vsphere distributed V switch. Host can be part of the distribute vswitch.
My understanding you have to manually enter the vlan id on each separate vm, there is no drop box to choose the vlan
is there any way we can achieve the similar result in Hyper V.
we do have license to use VMM
    Many thanks

Here's an example of how I set up my networking for VDI using 2 hosts and a 10Gb connection.  This configuration creates the team, the virtual switch with bandwidth mode, adds the different logical networks, sets the VLANs, and assigns the bandwidth
priority for each. You dont see a VLAN associated with the VM Traffic adapter because the switch ports include the VM Traffic Native VLAN for that network.
This is a fairly common setup for sharing the different networks over a 10GB pipe.  Also, you don't see our storage network in there due to the way our FCoE is configured.  Our FCoE configuration is a separate 10GB connection that uses the switch
    to prioritize the bandwidth.

I did not mention the program name and gui status name .
    Mean;

When the number of items becomes more I am getting that issue.
As it calls the BUI status each time, the memory gets full and hence gives that message.
If you know the exact solution plz reply back.

  • Thin Client IP phones for VDI solution

Is it possible to have a Cisco IP phone to act as a thin Client for VDI solution?
    Can anybody suiggest me

    Hello Sivakalam2
You ask an excellent question, and one that will likely trigger a heated discussion.  I've had interest in the same topic for several years, and surprisingly found very little online.  Everyone makes a thick client.  WebRTC is a development project which is making inroads toward thin client softphone functionality.  It's an excellent concept, but I haven't seen a production-ready client, yet.  (Not saying there aren't any; I just have not seen them.)
Then I came upon this info in the Cisco Unified Communications System 9.0 SRND:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/srnd/9x/collabor.html
    Cisco Virtualization Experience Client Architecture
Cisco Virtualization Experience Client (VXC) endpoints enable the end users to have secure real-time access to content and business applications as well as a rich collaborative user experience. These endpoints provide access to collaboration services that are part of the larger Cisco Virtualization Experience Infrastructure (VXI) solution. For information on a complete end-to-end VXI solution design, refer to the documentation available at
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/ns340/ns414/ns742/ns1100/landing_vxi.html
    Deploying Cisco Virtualization Experience Clients
Cisco Virtualization Experience Clients (VXC) are endpoints in the Cisco Unified Communications portfolio; however, they are more than just simple endpoints because they interact with a user's working environment by providing voice, video, and virtual desktop capability and functionality. A user's work environment can assume various profiles (for example, task worker, knowledge worker, or mobile worker), and Cisco has various Virtualization Experience Clients to meet those different needs.
The Cisco VXC 2111 and VXC 2112 provide an integrated form factor that is paired with a Cisco Unified IP Phone 8961, 9951, or 9971 for a fully integrated voice, video, and virtual desktop environment. The Cisco VXC 2211 and VXC 2212 provide a standalone form factor that can be used as simply a virtual desktop (for a task worker), or they can be paired with an IP phone for a fully integrated user environment. The Cisco VXC 4000 provides a software-only solution by using a re-purposed PC to provide the user with voice and virtual desktop functionality, while the Cisco VXC 6215 provides a Linux-based thin client for fully integrated voice, video, and virtual desktop in a single device.
I do not have direct experience with these clients yet, having upgraded to CUCM9 recently.  I'm definitely going to research it now.  There's much more info in the SRND link above to read.
    Thanks
    TZ
