Sun T2 chips vs SPARC64 VI/VII chips for Oracle database servers

We have recently found poor performance of Sun T5240 servers where (against previous V series servers with similar gross I/O capabilities on the disk volume)the timings for the recovery of the database, and the subsequent re-build of the tables and materialised views, are variable from slightly worse to atrocious. Given that the clock-speed is similar, and all significant oracle database parameters are the same, we couldn't see why these processes should take longer on the T5240. The statistics report from the database showed no I/O bottleneck on the new machine, instead it showed raised CPU times for some of the key slow statements.
We found the attached oracle metalink document (ref 781763.1) <<Sun_T2_slow_for Oracle_DB.html>>
Seems to be that if you can't control the content of large long-running SQL statements to parallelise them, don't buy a T-series box as the multithreading capability will work against you.
Therefore we are looking at new servers to run other similar large Oracle apps and appear to have a number of choices within a similar price range
Notably
M3000 - 1 x SPARC VII CPU (quad core procesor)
M4000 - 2 x SPARC VI CPU (dual core processor)
as opposed to the
T5240 - 2 x T2 CPU (8 core processor)
Question is which of these CPU/Core combinations works best...are there performance figures? What's the difference between CPU's and number of cores?
Any benchmarks to help us decide? Anyone experienced similar or tried these different combos for themselves?

We tested a T5210 as a database server (running Ingres, not Oracle) and our batch performance was roughly equivalent to a dual CPU UltraSPARC III V480. Our guess is that the performance hit came from having a relatively small cache shared across so many threads. Like you, we're looking at using the M3000 or M4000 in preference.

  • Which Sun processor is better for Oracle database

We are going to pick one Sun processor for Oracle 10g database. UltraSPARC IV+ or T1? UltraSPARC IV+ is good for Floating Point performance while T1 is good for multi-threaded integer performance. Which one fits Oracle database better?
    Thank you for help.

    Hi
With the database engine a CPU spends most of its time doing memory I/O. So, the performance of floating point and integer operations is not essential. In any case the database engine use floating point operations only marginally. Integer operations are much more frequent.
Personally, I would not spend money for these two processors. If you want to buy your hardware by Sun take a x64-Server (Opteron).

  • Sun Clustering for Oracle database

    Ambrose,
Big question! The requirements are somewhat simplistic,
    1 Admin workstation (SS20 +, we use Ultra5),
1 Terminal Concentrator - Special from Sun,
2 Ultra 2 or better servers. We have 2 E450's,
1+ Public network interface (hme0, hme1, etc, etc),
    1 Redundant private cluster interface (hme2, hme3),
1 Shared mirrored disk storage. (we use A1000/D1000),
    2 Veritas File system licenses,
    2 Veritas Volume Manager Licenses,
Solaris 2.6 Only, unless you want to use SDS then you dont need veritas,
    SUN Cluster 2.2 CD's,
If you use the A1000's for storage you will need the PCI/SBUS dual channel UltraScsi cards with the Raid Manager Software.
    Now for the bad news.
And of course don't forget to pay SUN Micro $$$ for the platinum maintenance on the cluster. Not to mention $$$$ upfront to have them install the cluster! Even though you go to the ES-330 class and know just as much about the environment as the guy who comes out to install it, you're not supported if done by yourself. Thanks SUN!
$20,000+ for install and $2995 for the class!
20K + for the platinum maintenance for which they never come out for their monthly "account review".
Hope this helps. Email me at [email protected] for a more thorough discussion.

quite surprised it suggests that iPhone 3gs s more powerful than the iPad1? iphone 3gs is supported. something is fishy. i don't want to fall out of love with apple products. looks like it's a business decision to cut support for iPad 1 - not technical shortcoming. if apple cut support for 3gs they will upset customers who just bought 3gs before iphone 5 was launched.... tsk tsk tsk.. i'm not from US. hope to see a class action suit by US peeps to resolve this...

  • Distortion workaround: can chip swap using line out jack for rear out ja

I am using a SB Audigy EAX. My headphones sound like a blown speaker mostly out of left ear. I tryed everything including reinstalling xp on my dell and nothing worked [yes I tried other headphones to no avail]. Finally I played around with the balance and realised that the left and right channels were leaking together slightly so I think there is a physical problem on the card. As a temp solution I have set my card to use four speakers and plugged my headphones into the rear out which is a different jack on the card. It sounds fine from the rear out jack but I wish there was a way to have the card use the rear out jack for line out output. In other words is there a program or driver that can tell the chip to swap line out jack for rear out jack? My card is no longer under warranty and I only ever use heaphones. The problem with my temp solution is that some winamp plugins and games don't function properly.

    Hi all,
Need some help from all out there
In our Sun Cluster 3.1 Data Service for Oracle RAC 9.2.0.7 (Solaris 9) configuration, my team had encountered
ora-29701 *Unable to connect to Cluster Manager*
during the startup of the Oracle RAC database instances on the Oracle RAC Server resources.
We tried the attached workaround by Oracle. This workaround works well for the 1^st time but it doesn’t work anymore when the server is rebooted.
Kindly help me to check whether anyone encounter the same problem as the above and able to resolve. Thanks.

ORA-29701 DURING DATABASE CREATION AFTER APPLYING 9.2.0.6 PATCHSET
    *** 03/25/05 07:32 am ***
    TAR:
    PROBLEM:
Customer applied 9.2.0.6 patchset over 9.2.0.4 patchset.
While creating the database, customer receives following error:
ORA-29701: unable to connect to Cluster Manager
However, if customer goes from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5 -> 9.2.0.6, the problem does not occur.
    DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS:
It seems that the problem is with libskgxn9.so shared library.
    For 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5 -> 9.2.0.6, the install log shows the following:
    installActions2005-03-22_03-44-42PM.log:,

    For 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.6, install log shows:
    installActions2005-03-22_04-13-03PM.log:, [libcmdll.so ->%ORACLE_HOME%/lib/libskgxn9.so 64274 plats=1=>[46] langs=-554696704=>[en]] does not exist.
This means that while patching from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5, Installer copies the libcmdll.so library into libskgxn9.so, while patching from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.6 does not.
ORACM is located in /app/oracle/ORACM which is different than ORACLE_HOME in customer's environment.

  • Sun One application server connection problem for Oracle DB

On our project in live environments we have six Sun One application servers that have been configured to connect to RAC Oracle database using OCI drivers. ( JDBC thick driver)
Sun one application server : Version 7.0.0
    Oracle Database : Version 9.2.0.4.0
Following are two scenarios where Sun one server receives an error while attempting to perform any DML operations onto the database e.g. when you will try to send a insert/update msg through sun One.
Case 1: - If the Oracle package/procedure/function is compiled using Alter package/function/procedure.... command
    problem
Any attempt to perform a DML operation using RMI calls though Sun one application server with already established oracle connection will fail.
Sun One application server needs to be bounced to get an up-to-date state of the package.
Case 2: If the Oracle package/procedure/function is compiled using Create or Replace package/function/procedure.... command
    problem
First attempt to perform any DML operation using RMI calls though Sun one application server with already established oracle connection will always fail. Any subsequent attempts will be successful.
We are using JDBC OCI think drivers. I tried flushing Shared pool at the Oracle side but it didn't help. For some reason Sun One seems to Cache the session information for already establised connections with Oracle database. As its live system we don't want any outage. i.e we know bouncing oracle app server will solve the problem.
So just wondering is there way/workaround to make aware the already estlised connection from sun one appserver to Oracle DB about changed packages/proceduress in the DB?
Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

  • Multiple Oracle databases in Sun cluster 3.2 (without RAC setup)

There are 2 Sun SPARC (Sun Fire T2000) servers with Solaris 10 (05/09) OS and Sun Cluster 3.2 software. We need two different Oracle databases & instances (Oracle 10g R2 without RAC) for an application. The first database is for Production and need to be configured in the first node & Shared storage disk and need high availability. This database should run from the second node if the first node fails. The second database is for Quality/Test and it is prefered to be running in the Second node for better load distribution. This DB doesnt require any failover.
The shared storage is Sun SE 3510 FC and multiple LUNs can be created for different databases..
Is it possible to configure two different resource groups (one for Quality and other for Production) and make the first node primary for Production RG, and the second node primary for Quality RG and thus distributing the load on 2 servers ? If possible, what special configuration required in Sun OS and Cluster side ?
Appreciate if you can give some configuration procedures/documents for this multi-master cluster setup..

You can configure two resource groups, such as:
    # clrg create -n node-a,node-b prod-rg
    # clrg create -n node-b qa-rgand you configure the required resources (disk groups / file systems, logical host, oracle listener, oracle server) as described within
    [http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2980?l=en&a=expand|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2980?l=en&a=expand]
Note that this is not really called a "multi-master" configuration - that has a specific meaning for a resource group (see [http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/babefcja?l=en&a=view|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/babefcja?l=en&a=view] ) for details.
With Solaris Cluster all nodes part of a cluster are considered active and can host resource groups. You can have any number of resource groups running, where a subset runs one one node, another subset on other nodes. The nodelist property of the resource group defines where it can run, the first node in the list is the preferred primary.
You can even define resource group dependencies or affinities between the resource groups. Like you could define a negative affinity between qa-rg and prod-rg, such as if prod-rg needs to failover to node-b (since e.g. node-a died), it would offline qa-rg. Details for that kind of possibilities are described at [http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/ch14_resources_admin-35?l=en&a=view|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/ch14_resources_admin-35?l=en&a=view].

  • Sun Solaris 10,Upgrade 8 or higher,having issues with VxFS,for Oracle 11gr2

A while ago, we tried doing a prototype upgrade of our main Oracle 10g db to Oracle 11gr2.
The OS on which our Oracle 10g is running is Sun Solaris 10, upgrade 4.
According to Oracle 11gr2 documentation, we need Sun Solaris 10, upgrade 6 or higher for Oracle 11g2.
The filesystem we are using is VxFS, Veritas File System.
According to our system administrator, we had issues , making Sun Solar 10, upgrade 8 , work with the VxFS filesystem.
I was wondering if anybody is running Oracle 11g2 on Sun Solaris 10 upgrade 6 or higher with VxFS file system.
At present, our Oracle db upgrade project is on a hold, because of the above issue. So your help on this , can really help us in figuring out if there is an issue between VxFS filesystem and Sun Solaris 10 OS.
    Thanks
    Ashish

    Hi Ashish,
We are not running Veritas Cluster file system.
We tried moving our Oracle 10g r2 db on ZFS ,before doing the upgrade and performance on ZFS was worst.
ZFS has certain memory parameter setting. If you did not configure that then ZFS will eat your complete system memory.
My system administrator, has gotten a copy of Solaris 10 upgrade 9 and will try that with VxFS.
I was curious to find out if folks are running Oracle 11g on Sun Solaris 10 with VxFS file system and if they had experienced any issue. If you can Install Vxfs on Oracle Soalris 10 U9, then according to me there sholudn't be any limitations for an oracle database.
Recently i installed Oracle database 11.2.0.2 on one of my test server. I have created two databases - one on ZFS and another on ASM.
    Refer:
    http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2010/10/installation-of-11202-on-oracle-solaris.html
We dont have any performance issues. We are testing it for the performance benchmarks on both of the filesystem.
If you can Install Vxfs on Oracle Soalris 10 U9, then according to me there sholudn't be any limitations for an oracle database.

  • RAW disks for Oracle 10R2 RAC NO SUN CLUSTER

Yes you read it correctly....no Sun cluster. Then why am I on the Forum right? Well we have one Sun Cluster and another that is RAC only for testing. Between Oracle and Sun, neither accept any fault for problems with their perfectly honed products. Currently, I have multipathed fiber hba's to a Storedge 3510, and I've tried to get Oracle to use a raw lun for the ocr and voting disks. It doesn't see the disk. I've made sure they are stamped for oracle:dba, and tried oracle:oinstall. When presenting /dev/rdsk/C7t<long number>d0s6 for the ocr, I get a "can not find disk path." Does Oracle raw mean SVM raw? Should I create metadisks?

"Between Oracle and Sun, neither accept any fault for problems with their perfectly honed products"...more specific:
Not that the word "fault" is characterization of any liability, but a technical characterization of acting like a responsible stakeholder when you sell your product to a corporation. I've been working on the same project for a year, as an engineer. Not withstanding a huge expanse of management issues over the project, when technical gray areas have been reached, whereas our team has tried to get information to solve the issue. The area has become a big bouncing hot potato. Specifically, when Oracle has a problem reading a storage device, according to Oracle, that is a Sun issue. According to Sun, they didn't certify the software on that piece of equipment, so go talk to Oracle. In the sun cluster arena, if starting the database creates a node eviction from the cluster, good luck getting any specific team to say, that's our problem. Sun will say that Oracle writes crappy cluster verify scripts, and Oracle will say that Sun has not properly certified the device for use with their product. Man, I've seen it. The first time I said O.K. how do we avoid this in the future, the second time I said how did I let this happen again, and after more issues, money spent, hours lost, and customers, pissed --do the math.   I've even went as far as say, find me a plug and play production model for this specific environment, but good luck getting two companies to sign the specs for it...neither wants to stamp their name on the product due to the liability.  Yes your right, I should beat the account team, but as an engineer, man that's not my area, and I have other problems that I was hired to deal with.  I could go on.  What really is a slap in face is no one wants to work on these projects, if given the choice with doing a Windows deployment, because they can pop out mind bending amounts of builds why we plop along figuring out why clusterware doesn't like slice 6 of a /device/scsi_vhci/ .  Try finding good documentation on that.  ~You can deploy faster, but you can't pay more!

  • Veritas required for Oracle RAC on Sun Cluster v3?

    Hi,
We are planning a 2 node Oracle 9i RAC cluster on Sun Cluster 3.
Can you please explain these 2 questions?
    1)
If we have a hardware disk array RAID controller with LUNs etc, then why do we need to have Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) if all the LUNS are configured at a hardware level?
    2)
Do we need to have VxFS? All our Oracle database files will be on raw partitions.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    > We are planning a 2 node Oracle 9i RAC cluster on Sun
Cluster 3.Good. This is a popular configuration.
Can you please explain these 2 questions?
    1)
If we have a hardware disk array RAID controller with
LUNs etc, then why do we need to have Veritas Volume
Manager (VxVM) if all the LUNS are configured at a
hardware level?VxVM is not required to run RAC. VxVM has an option (separately
licensable) which is specifically designed for OPS/RAC. But if
you have a highly reliable, multi-pathed, hardware RAID platform,
you are not required to have VxVM.
    2)
Do we need to have VxFS? All our Oracle database
files will be on raw partitions.No.
IMHO, simplify is a good philosophy. Adding more software
and layers into a highly available design will tend to reduce
the availability. So, if you are going for maximum availabiliity,
you will want to avoid over-complicating the design. KISS.
In the case of RAC, or Oracle in general, many people do use
raw and Oracle has the ability to manage data in raw devices
pretty well. Oracle 10g further improves along these lines.
A tenet in the design of highly available systems is to keep
the data management as close to the application as possible.
Oracle, and especially 10g, are following this tenet. The only
danger here is that they could try to get too clever, and end up
following policies which are suboptimal as the underlying
technologies change. But even in this case, the policy is
coming from the application rather than the supporting platform.
