Sun Trunking on Solaris 10

How do you install Sun Trunking package on Solaris 10? Is it on the Solaris 10 CD? Looks like the Sun Trunking 1.3 download is just an update. The default install did not install the package.

SunTrunking is not part of any version of Solaris.
You should be able to get the version for Solaris 10 free from the Sun download center at www.sun.com.

  • Sun Trunking 1.& kern Warning Hardware address trying to be our IP addresse

    Using Sun Trunking 1.3 on a solaris 10 11/06 V490 server.
setenv local-mac-address? is set to true
Obviously server Aggregate MAC address corresponds to first NIC local MAC address. Second NIC has its specific MAC address.
Aggregate seams OK (traffic continues undisrupted when unplugging a card)
    but :
    1) Should I worry kernel is logging from toime to time messages such as :
WARNING: IP: Hardware address '00:14:4f:3b:60:f4' trying to be our address IP_address !
    2) There is no load balancing between the 2 NIC interfaces as reported by nettr -stats 0 interval=2
Traffic always flows using NIC 2.
    Appreciated,
    Lor.

    That depends on the switch.
SunTrunking 1.3 is compatible with Cisco EtherChannel for example. I believe there's a manual configuration on the switch to say that these two ports are participating in an etherchannel linkage. SunTrunking is an 802.11ad protocol. If they haven't done that, then the switch is just assuming the two ports are normal and have separate hosts behind them.
If instead of SunTrunking you were using Solaris 10 Link Aggregation, then you'd ask the networking guys to turn on LACP, which sets up a communication so the devices can describe their trunk/network setup. SunTrunking doesn't let you do that.
What interfaces do you have on the Solaris box?

  • Nettr: ioctl failed: I/O error  - when configuring sun trunking

    Hello,
    I'm having a problem while trying to get sun trunking 1.3 configured. I'm getting the error, "/etc/opt/SUNWconn/bin/nettr: ioctl failed: I/O error" when executing the command, " /etc/opt/SUNWconn/bin/nettr -setup 0 device=qfe members=0,1,2,3 policy=1 lacp=p ptimer=1".
I have an Ultra 80 with an installed qfe card. I can see the instances of the qfe in /etc/path_to_inst, and the card is currently unplumbed.
The installation of Sun trunking 1.3 was fine and I rebooted the system prior to running the nettr command.
Anyone seen this problem before. Any help would be appreciated.

"If I guess correctly you are saying that in order for this to work the switch needs to support aggregation as well?"
Yes. I had to have the four ports on my Cisco setup to accept aggregation. I believe it is because they are being presented with the same MAC address. Here are what my ports look like:

  • Is it sun only release solaris 10 for x86-64 ? then how about 32 bit ?

    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp

No, the Solaris 10 GA release bits for x64/x86 support:
    - 32-bit "x86" cpus (amd & intel)
    - 64-bit "x64" cpus (amd opteron, amd athlon 64 with amd64
extension, intel cpus with em64t extension)

Does anyone know how to trunk two Gigaswift ethernet interfaces? The Solaris Trunking software is only supported on Solaris 7-9. There doesn't seem to be built in functionality in Solaris 10 to enable trunking.

    Check out the Nemo project:
    http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/networking/
    And from Sunays (http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/sunay/20050526) blog:
"Coming back to Nemo, it also does trunking for both 10Gb and 1Gb NICs in a pretty simple way. We demo'd a trunk of 2 10Gb NICs on a 2 CPU machine during the Sunlab's openhouse in april and we ran over 12GBps over the trunk! There are some other cool things Nemo will allow us to do and one of these days I will tell you the details."
I'm not sure if GLDv3 is supported in Solaris 10 GA, you might have to get the latest Solaris Express.

  • On Sun fire v490 - Solaris 10 with Oracle 8.1.7.4 & Sybase 12.0

    Hi,
We are going to upgrade our server with this configuration -
Sun Fire V490     2 x 1.05 GHz UltraSPARC IV CPU
    8096MB RAM     2 x73GB local disk
    2x FC 2GB Sun/QLogic HBAs
    DAT72
On one machine we will have Sun Solaris v10 with
Oracle DB v8.1.7.4 & Second one will be Sun Solaris v10 with Sybase DB v12.0.0.6.
Now our question is - Sun fire have Hyper-thread CPUs will the O/S and databases (Oracle and Sybase) view the proposed system as a true 4 CPU platform? Will parameters used to tune the database such as Sybase max online engines still operate in the same manner as before?
    Our old machine configuration was - Sun E450     4x400MHz CPU     1024MB RAM     2 x18; 8x36GB disks

Questions on Oracle and Sybase should be directed to a database forum, this forum is for Sun hardware support.
Here is a link to a DB forum I look at from time to time:
    http://www.dbforums.com/index.php
The topic of tuning Oracle or Solaris is way beyond the scope of this forum, I have attempted to go into it before but didn't get any feedback and I would only like to spend lots of time on it if I was being paid!!! On the memory side, keep in mind that Oracle 9i 64-bit can address a maximum of 2 ^ 64 ( 16777216 TB ) memory, prior to that the DBA had to define memory parameters in init.ora. To be honest the last time I worked with a Oracle 8 database I shut a HP K class server down permanently that had been migrated to Oracle 9i on Solaris by an Oracle consultant and I can't remember all the tuning trick etc.

    Hi Sugunakar,
There are a few small things I can think of checking:
I am trying to install SMC on solaris 10What version of Solaris 10 are you using? You need 11/06 (aka "Update 3") or later. Also, it looks like this is on a V210: how much memory and swap do you have ([requirements here|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-2215/deployment-72?l=en&a=view])? And have you [edited your /etc/project file|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-2216/chapter2-1000?l=en&a=view] to adjust the shared memory settings?
Have you applied any of the [patch sets|http://forums.halcyoninc.com/showthread.php?t=104]?
smcdatabase service is always in maintenance mode.It would be interesting to see what that service log says. Look in /var/svc/log/application-management-sunmcdatabase:default.log for clues.
/var/opt/SUNWsymon/install/guibased-setup.1285765588453.sh: /var/opt/SUNWsymon/db/data/SunMC/pg_hba.conf: cannot createIs there any reason why SunMC may not be able to write to /var (or /var/opt/SUNWsymon)? Maybe portions of /var are read-only (shared from a global zone, or over NFS)?
I've done a lot of SunMC pilot projects over the years: if you could use some help speeding up your eval just send me an email.

Can someone let me know if this is a Compiler issue or it has something to do with my code .
I'll Appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks in Advance
    Somak

If you specify -S compiler option, assembly file will be produced and it enables you to look at the code assembler is complaining about. For example:
    /ASM
    pushl %ebx <== line 31
    /ASMEND
I'm not too familiar with AMD64 ABI, but it is possible that you can't use 32-bit registers in 64 bit mode with some operations like memory (including stack) access.
I was able to compile code with the following changes:
    asm(" movl $1,%eax"); /* this 1 inworking reg will set x /
asm(" pushl %rbx"); /* save the register; eax already saved */
asm(" movl 8(%rbp),%ebx"); /* move the address of x */
    asm(" xchg %eax,(%rbx)"); /* atomic swap a one with x /
asm(" cmp $0,%eax"); /* test what was in x /
asm(" jnz .A9999"); /* jump if x was already set /
    r = 1; /* indicate set occurred */
    asm(" .A9999:");
asm(" popl %rbx"); /* restore the register */

Ping is working properly. Do you have any ideea how can i fix this problem?
    Thank you.

    Yeahh, guys!!!
I was trying to establish a two-node cluster using VirtualBox + Solaris x86 + Sun Cluster 3.2. The node where I was running scinstall to configure my cluster environment was rebooting the other node in the end of the configuration process but it was hanging in the "Rebooting node01..." message just because it was not able to establish the cluster.
After see your comments, I changed Solaris x86 to Solaris Express Community Edition and Sun Cluster to Cluster Express and now everything is working fine!
    Thanks!

  • Re: Sun Fire v490 / Solaris 9 booting from CD, Network problems

    Hi Folks,
Apologies in advance for the length of this post.
For the purposes of disaster recovery I have built a custom CD based on the Solaris 9 installation disk with our third party backup / restore software included on it.
After the rcS script has setup networking it runs a bash shell so that I can label / partition / format the hard disks as necessary then use the third party software to recover the system.
This works fine on almost all the machines we've tested (Ultra 10s, Ultra 30s, FS Prime Power 400)
On one Sun Fire v490 however I seem to have problems with networking...
Part of the customised rcS script makes the following call
ifconfig ce0 10.4.20.20 netmask 255.255.0.0 upto configure the NIC. However when the rcS script leaves me at the shell I'm unable to ping anything.
The output from ifconfig - a looks like...
    lo0 flag=..
        inet 127.0.0.1
    ce0: flags=1000823<UP BROADCAST,NOTRAILER,MULTICAST,IPv4>
mtu 1500 index 2 inet 10.4.20.20 netmask ffff0000 broadcast 10.255.255.255 ether 0:14:4f:0:be:beThe only thing that looks odd to me is that there's no "RUNNING" entry for ce0 that I get if I boot from the same CD on my other machines (Ultra 30s & Ultra 10s)
The broadcast address looks wrong, but again it's the same when I boot from th CD on my other test machines and they all seem to work.
I'm pretty sure that ce0 is "plumbed", 'cos if I "unplumb" it from the shell prompt then it doesn't even appear in the output from ifconfig.
Someone has suggested that it's a connectivity issue, but if I boot normally rather than from my custom CD then the networking is fine.
As a test I tried removing the drivers for hme from the CD then booting one of my Ultra30s but in this case the entry for hme0 was completely absent from the output of ifconfig.
So I've concluded that the driver for ce0 is at least there on the v490.
So for the moment I'm confused as to why the ce0 appears on the output for ifconfig, but has no RUNNING 'flag'
    Anyone got any ideas
    Many thanks in advance
    Regards
    Kevin

    hello
you have an error in your interface configuration

  • Sun LDAP with Solaris

    Hi All,
i have very simple and short query, Is Sun Directory comes bundled with Solaris 10 ? or we need to download explicitely.
If we download that is a free version or we need to procure.
    Thanks

    Hi Avninder,
No it does not come with Solaris 10, nor Solaris 10 current license gives you entitlement with support for it.

  • I cann't telnet to Sun v100 running Solaris 8

    Hello,
I tried login to WebServer (Sun v100, Solaris 8). I could not telnet to it. I don't know what cause the problem. I installed the WebServer6.1 into it (sun v100 Box). However, I need to access to the Box in order to turn the WebServer 6.1 on or off. Do you know where should I look for it? I cannot ping it on the dos command because it is not response. Any thought would be greatly appreciated.
    Madison Le

It may work out the box - however, do you really want to be in the position where if it stops working you have no-one to call?
Don't underestimate the "this isn't supported" statement.

  • Local Authorities and SUN hardware/software & Solaris

It has come to my attention that nearly every local authority in Kent is ditching or has ditch SUN Solaris in favour of MS Windows, sighting the following reasons:
Sun Sparc kit is very expensive.
Unix system administrators demand high wages.
All applications used within a local authority now run under Windows.
On the same subject free ware solutions such as OpenOffice fail to integrate into any of the councils systems, making them of no interest.
As a Unix system admin guy in a local authority, I find this trend rather alarming.
With the advent of cheap SAN's and VMware this trend can only accelerate.
Do SUN have any plans to counter this trend?

I doubt that our MS Windows team will consider the AMD x86 route, now that all our Windows servers have been consolidated onto a SAN under VMWare.
With the ability to carry out system snapshots in seconds and reducing our Windows server count down from over twenty to one, the Sun hardware is looking very expensive, to both purchase and maintain.
As for an answer I was looking more along the lines of what can we do to improve things, however I believe it may be a little too late, for us at least!.
