Sun Ultra 10 with SunStorEDGE A1000/D1000 unable to setup

I realise this covers old ground but I have not been able to trace a uitable resolvement and would be grateful for assistance.
I have a Sun Ultra 10 with 256MB RAM and 440GHz cpu.. It has a pci Adaptec 2944UW HVD SCSI interface card. The storage system is a tray of eight scsi 72GB disks housed in a D1000 case. NetBSD reported it as an A1000 SunStorEDGE at sd0 having 16 targets and 8 luns. However NetBSD did not have a readily available controller to setup the raid system so I installed an alternative. I presume the case is a reused old case housing an A1000 unit.
I tried to format the drives directly but they are not lists as devices such as ct1sd1 etc. and so this is not possible.
I have installed Sun Solaris 10 but could not communicate and reported inability to use rdriver and rdnexus and after reading a number of reports that driver hooks had been removed from the kernel in Solaris 10 I have installed Solaris 9.
On both occasions I installed a number of RAID Manager 6.1.1 control packs, namely SUNWosafw, osar, osau, osamn and vtsse direct from my CD here.
I commanded dr_hotadd.sh to take up the challenge but it failed to communicate.
I added a number of Rdac amendments to rparams in /etc/osa but this did not resolve the issue.
I have tried to call probe-scsi-all after doing a reset-all from the OBP but this fails to report anything. I presume this is because the unit is connected by the interface card rather than a direct scsi disk.
dmesg pipe grep scsi reports:
unknown scsi sd0 at uata0 target 2 lun 0
I would be very grateful fr guidance to resolve this connection so that I can create a suitable filestore.

Do you have a dial in the rear with a scsi address? That will be the address that the A1000 will respond on. In addition, the A1000 has only one pair of SCSI ports. The D1000 has two pair and doesn't have the scsi adress dial (because each of the disks in the chassis respond on their own addresses). Instead you have some DIP switches to change the addressing behavior.

You can ignore them. Neither the A1000 nor D1000 require those drivers. You should still be able to use 'rm6' or the CLI tools to interact with an A1000.

I don't think it is a kernel problem but a h/ware problem.
CPU 1 reported an ecache (sram) data parity event,
the fault handling code in 5.9 can't do anything about the
error as it is in a page belonging to a user process so it reboots the box.
The no error found in ecache means that either the
fault handling code displaced the error from the cache or there
wasn't one and you had a transient transport error between the
cache and the cpu.
I would engage your h/ware support vendor to work out what h/ware component is broken as these things are quite complex, but the score of 95 would (to a h/ware novice like me) point to cpu 1 being the culprit - but check with an expert.

Sun Ultra 40 Suppl. CD V1.3 Bios + SLi Broadcast Aperture + Nvidia 91.29

I am using a Sun Ultra 40 with dual Opteron and dual Quadro FX 4500 in SLi-Configuration.
I just upgraded the Bios to the new release V1.3 and I just noticed an entry inside the Bios regarding the "SLi Broadcast Aperture". Following values are possible:
1. Disabled
2. SLi on Master
3. SLi on Slave
What is the recommended value for my system in order to maximize the performance? I assume the master is the first graphics card, but I would like to know the correct value.
Another issue I found out with the newest supplied Graphics driver on the supplemental CD by Sun (Nvidia V91.29), after startup the driver recognizes the sysem as an SLi-System but by enabling the SLi-support it is stated that the system does not have two identical graphics cards and SLi stays disabled. With the older driver on the supplemental CD V1.2 everything works fine. I have the doubt, that Sun was slightly to fast by releasing this driver?!
Anyhelp is more than welcome/needed and appreciated! For anybody intrested, the Sun Ultra 40 is an awesome system and for any heavy workload in CAD first choice!

The problem with sharing the bge0 port between Solaris and the IPMI is a bug in the bge driver, fixed by patch 122028-02.
The problem with the bmc driver was more mysterious. Finally a note ("Adding SMDC Card Requires BIOS Flash") was added to the release notes web page. I had already upgraded my BIOS to the latest (1.1.1) revision, but re-flashing with the /cd switch as detailed in the note and performing a reconfiguration boot of Solaris fixed the problem.

Sun Ultra 40

Has anyone gotten dual-display to work with a Sun Ultra 40 with Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4.0? The dual-display works when booting and shutting down but doesn't work in normal operation when the machine is booted. I've tried both the nvidia driver that comes on the disc with the machine and the latest driver from Nvidia's website.
Any help would be my appreciated.

The best option is to contact Sun support ( or Red Hat if your contract is with Red Hat ), the systems GA date was Feb. 14 and at this time there is limited InfoDocs and SRDBs.

Unable to install Solaris Sparc 10 on SUN Ultra 10

Downloaded ISO of SPARC 10 DVD from Oracle site, burnt it and tried to install on SUN Ultra 10 (300 MGz / 256 MB RAM / 80 GB IDE HDD)
Followed the process as specified below:
1. Stop+A to stop the current boot process.(Already SPARC 8 is installed)
2. AT OK prompt typed boot cdrom
3. After some time (3-5 min) prompting error
*"boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f File and args:*_
Panic - Kernel : kmem64 allocation failure+_
Program Terminated+_
ok "+_
Checked in few blogs and burnt another DVD with less writing speed, still same error.
Checked with Sparc 8 CD's, Sparc 5.8 installing without any errors.

If I recall correctly, Solaris 10 needs a minimum of 768MB of RAM to install and 1GB or more of RAM to run, even if you had a cpu that was fast enough to run anything.
Perhaps consider it this way:
Would you even dream of trying to install MS Windows 7 on a Pentium-I at 300MHz?
Stay with your Solaris 8. It's from the same late 1990's era as that hardware and fits it just right.

Urgent question about two monitors for Sun Ultra 40 M2

Hello,
I feel extremely unhappy to ask you the following.
I bought recently a Sun Utra 40 M2. I thought that with NVIDA Quadro FX1500 one could have two monitors as there are two DVI-D 's to connect with two monitors.
But today I heard from SUN support that Sun does not support two monitors under SUN Solaris 10. It is possible with Linux on this SUN Ultra 40, but not with Solaris, so it was told to me.
But: is this true? I still can not believe it.

Solaris 2.6 upgrade to version 8 on SUN ULTRA 10

I met the same question as uxdms who left the message on Dec 20,2001.
When I was trying to upgrade from solaris 2.6 to 8 release , there is "failed" warning and the upgrade isn't created.
There is a detailed info:

(2) prompted to insert the Solaris 8 software 1 of 2.
(3)After selecting serial the dialog box of the upgrade..

Hi everybody,
I have buyed a Sun Ultra 5 used with Solaris 8 pre-installed.
When I turn-on power the system starts but I havent openboot prompt. I want install Solaris 10. How I can start openboot's prompt and run the command "boot cdrom"?

The STOP-N keyboard sequence is a great beginning for any used SPARC system.
It will reset all firmware settings to their factory default values.
There's no telling what the previous owners may have done
to enter custom settings in its OBP. (you can memorize "N" for normal if that helps)
You hold those keys until you see a signal finally get to your monitor.
It will be uncomfortable, but they need to be held that long.
Once that is done you can use a different keyboard sequence
to get to the OBP prompt.
STOP-A will end the boot-up process and get you to the OK prompt.

Your Ultra-5 has a version 3.x OBP prom in its design.

Sun Ultra 25 - Bad magic number in disk label

I have a Sun Ultra 25 SPARC that is booting fine to it's 80GB SATA drive. Solaris 10, OpenBoot 4.22.19.
Here's what I did:
I installed a 2TB Western Digital SATA drive into the HDD1 slot.
I formatted the disk in the HDD1 slot via the format command, labeled the disk, and divided it into partitions.
I then used newfs to build the ufs on all partitions.
I mirrored the disk in HDD0 to the disk in HDD1 using ufsdump for all partitions. The data is accessible and looks ok.
After this was done I did an installboot to /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0 (the / partition of the HDD1 slot).
I then did a fsck on every partition to verify that they are okay.
I then took the hard drive in HDD1 and put it in the HDD0 slot, now wanting to boot off that disk.
At the reboot:
Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package
If I do a probe-scsi:
MPT Version 1.05, Firmware Version 1.08.03.00

I just don't understand how the fsck is okay, but the boot give bad magic number in disk label?
The 80GB drive in HDD slot 0 works fine with the boot disk0 command, all I'm doing is swapping a larger disk with the same data for the smaller disk.

if it is like any other Sun product, it needs to go through the format command and get a volname.... it is just a label, but it needs to be done.

Sun ultra 40 boot problem AMD Opteron

my Sun Ultra 40 will not boot, it is an AMD Opteron based machine, the cooling fans are spinning, but there is no msg to read on the monitor.
Occasionally I got it to boot, it ran for two weeks, but at next reboot it displays no signal to the video card.
I spotted this in the manual

what can I do? is the motherboard faulty? How can I get it to boot from CD
and run a system diagnosis?
What mainboard is compatible? should I replace it with a newer mainboard + CPU + RAM?
Will it fit in the Sun Ultra 40 desktop tower?

Yet Another CD-ROM problem Sun ultra 10

Hello There.
I just got a Sun ultra 10 and I am trying to install Solaris 10 on it using the original DVD that I got from sun.
However when i try running a boot cdrom at the ok prompt I see that it cannot read the label.
Im sure it is because it is a DVD and not a CD. Isn't it?
Can the sun ultra 10's CD reader read a DVD..i dont think so.
By the way is there a work around for this.
Is there a way to boot from the network. I am pretty new to the sparc platform and id love to have a simple How-to about booting from the network.
I have a 10 Mbps LAN connection at home with Dynamic IP addressing.

hmmm..interesting.
I do not seem to have a spare DVD drive at the moment. Can i not connect an xternal DVD drive to that machine?
Additionally it says that the openboot version of the box is 3,19 and I wonder if it shud be at 3,3 inorder to have the proper install of the solaris 10.

Basic networking - getting a Sun Ultra 10 on my home network

Hello,
I have a Sun Ultra 10 at home running Solaris 8.
I am trying to teach myself a bit about networking so I thought I would try to get the box online. I am having little success. Hopefully someone will tell me where I'm going wrong. Here's what I've done:
- Created /etc/hostname.hme0 with entry "mymachine" (without the quotes)
- Edited /etc/hosts so that its contents are:
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.110 mymachine loghost
My documentation states that the fully qualified domain name should appear on the second of the above 2 lines, but I don't have a "mycompany.com" type domain thing, so I'm not sure what I should put, if anything?
- verified that /etc/nodename contains the single line:
mymachine
- created /etc/defaultrouter with sinlge line entry:
192.168.0.1
This is the IP of my broadband router.
When I rebooted the machine, an ifconfig -a reported an IP of 127.0.0.1 against hme0. That seemed odd (given that I put the IP in the hosts file) so I ran:
ifconfig hme0 plumb
ifconfig hme0 192.168.1.110 up
and ifconfig -a then reported that the IP of hme0 was 192.168.0.1.
However, I cannot ping 192.168.0.1. I get "ICMP Host Unreachable from gateway 192.168.1.110 for icmp 192.168.1.110 to 192.168.0.1".
I think it is quite likely that my problem is hardware. I have a network cable running from the network port on my Ultra 10 to port 3 on my 4 port hub (I've tried 1,2, and 3). Port 4 is the Normal/Uplink. I have a cable running from a port on my broadband router to port 4 on the hub. The port is set to "Normal" rather than Uplink. The Rx light flashes on port 4 - but not on port 3.
I'd be extremely grateful for any pointers on this!

I changed the IP on my Solaris box to 192.168.0.110 and all was well. Well, I can get onto the internet now, and can see my Windows boxes from my Solaris box, but oddly I can't see (using ping) my Solaris box from my Windows box.

Prom Security on Sun Ultra 10 Workstation

Just purchase a Sun Ultra 10 Workstation from my company. When I took the system home, it would boot with the follow sequence:

The system locks and thats all she wrote. I have tried using STOP-A commands with no luck. It looks like the Prom Security must be enabled because the documentation specifies that these commands will not work if prom security is enabled.
Attempted to install Solaris 8 and other that this initial CD lights indicating that a cd was loaded, I cannot get beyond this.
Is there any suggestions on what to do next to get the system up and running or just to get Solaris 8 to start load, anyone????

Keep in mind that you'll get no output to any screen until you connect a Sun-branded keyboard-and-mouse kit. Do NOT force a PS/2 keyboard into the systemboard port else you'll damage it.
That screen must also be capable of displaying Sun's default resolution of 1152x900 at a vertical refresh of 60Hz. If the monitor cannot do that, it will commonly stay black.

Hard disk problem after installing Solaris 10 u5 on a Sun Ultra 24

Hi.
After receiving a new Sun Ultra 24, shipped with Solaris 10 u4, the first thing I did was installing Solaris 10 u5. X wouldn't start but that was not a big problem and installed it in text mode. Installation went fine but, when the system starts, a single beep is heard and after some seconds some warning message appear on the console, before the "Hostname: ..." message, informing that some read operation on my hard disk had timed out and were aborted. The system then starts up normally. The only other anomaly is that the diagnostic partition in unbootable.
I ran the hard disk tests from the tools and drivers CDs and all of the tests were passed. Solaris 10 u4 was working normally so I'm wondering if this may be a bug.
