Sun Ultra 20 M2 fails to boot if an USB storage device is plugged in

Hi.
If any of my LaCie external USB disks are plugged in my Sun Ultra 20 M2, BIOS hangs and fails to boot. Bios is upgraded with latest version (Tools and drivers CD v. 1.6a). Furthermore, my LaCie mobile disk is listed on Solaris HCL.
LaCie Lacie Mobile Hard Drive 250 GB
Any hint on how to troubleshoot this issue?
Thanks,
Enrico.

I indeed each a test with every USB device I could collect, including keyboards, and I did have the same problems with others disks, although no one with other kind of hardware.
Not being a problem of my disk, is it possible to file a bug for a workstation BIOS?
Thanks,
Enrico,

  • MBP will not boot when a USB/USB2 Device is plugged into either USB port.

MBP hangs on the initial Gray Screen when anything is plugged into either of my MBP's USB ports on boot and reboot. I've tried it with a USB mouse, USB2 Hard Drive, USB Memory Stick and USB RF Mouse. It DOES NOT happen when anything is plugged into the Firewire 800 port, only either USB port.
It happens on reboot and a fresh start whenever something is plugged into either of these two USB ports. I've let the gray screen sit overnight, just to see if it would enter the Login Panel. Didn't happen.
As soon as I unplug the USB item, the HD whirls up and a few seconds later the booting continues as normal. I have booted in verbose mode just to see what the system says. It stays on the gray screen, again, until I unplug the USB device. However, the screen does note the following:
"The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in. It will keep retrying. (Port 3 of hub @ location: 0x6000000)."
The above error may or may not be related.
........AND BEFORE ANYONE SUGGESTS IT, YES I HAVE ZAPPED THE PRAM and reinstalled the OS from new MBP Install Disks from scratch! Still occurs.
Hope someone can also validate what I've wrote with the newer MBP, as well.
    Many Thanks!

  • Ultra 5 fails to boot

so I just got a used Ultra5 Workstation and it's now failing to boot. it was having IDPROM issues and was unable to find its CDROM drive. I reset the NVRAM and reprogrammed the IDPROM, got everything working and installed an OS.
now the machine turns on, spins up, beeps and flashes the keyboard and then stops. no power LED. the keyboard usually flashes several times, but those have stopped. the monitor displays nothing. STOP-A, N and D seem to have no effect.
I am stumped. is my hardware just borked?

If you have another computer, get a null modem serial cable, (ultra 5's serial input is tty a
so one end would be 25 pin male) connect is to the second computer and watch what happens
on hyperterminal (I'm assuming the other machine is windows based).
If you have errors before your framebuffer activates you will see them on the terminal output.

  • Booting from a USB 2 device

I've an external self powered USB 2 HD device in a cheapo enclosure with a 2.5" 100 GB Seagate Ultra ATA/100 disk with 8 MB cache and spinning at 5400 RPM and have used SuperDuper! to clone my MacBook's 80 GB internal HD to it. SD! completes just fine without errors and blessed the USB Volume.
When I select Startup Disk in System Prefs the USB device shows up as a selectable startup disk. I select it and click Restart.
As system boots it displays a folder with ? on it and then it disappears and then comes back again a 2nd time and then finally disappears and the system then proceeds to boot up from the internal HD.
I did use Disk Utility to partition the USB 2 drive into one partition formatted as HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) and chose Option... partition scheme as 'GUID Partition Table'.
It's not obvious to me what I'm doing wrong as it seems many others have done this without problems.
    help appreciated.

It is a self powered enclosure and requires me to connect the USB cable to two ports on my PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz and my Dual 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 using a powered USB hub.
Interestingly enough, on my Balck MacBook it receives enough power from a Single USB port.
My guess as to why it requires two USB port connections on the PowerBook and the PowerMac is that the power supplied by one USB port is barely enough on these two machines whereas on the MacBook there's a bit more power and the drive/enclosure is happy enough.
My next step is to remove SuperDuper! from the equation altogether and use the MacBook's install DVD to install a vanilla Mac OS X onto the 100gig external USB device. I will then see if this produces a bootable device that will actually boot the MacBook.
Another approach will be to use another 60gig external self ppowered LaCie device I have that has FireWire and USB 2 capabilities, and of course use the USB connection rather than the FireWire one. This device can also be powered from an external power brick if necessary. Also, I'm pretty sure in the past I've booted the MacBook from this device with a SD! cloned image on it using the FireWire connection.
Hmmmm... more testing to do before I give up on my cheapo USB 2 enclosure.
Thanks to all for the feedback, and I'll post back my findings later.

  • Ultra 1 Fails to Boot

I just got an Ultra 1 a couple of days ago, and when I booted it up, it said that its IDPROM was invalid and I was getting TOD errors. I turned off the station and now it won't boot. On my keyboard, it'll light up the caps lock and num lock, then lights up compose and scroll lock about a second after, then it sits there and does nothing. I looked up the POST code, and from what I've read, it's saying that the cpu board has failed, and that it has no memory. Could replacing the IDPROM solve the issue I'm having?

    Hello,
Could replacing the IDPROM solve the issue I'm having
Maybe. I would recommend that you dettach the keyboard and attach to the serial console port.
Review the trouble-shooting chapter in the Ultra 1 Service Manual.
You can re-program the IDPROM ([*SUN NVRAM/hostid FAQ*|http://www.squirrel.com/sun-nvram-hostid.faq.html]). If the battery in the IDPROM (NVRAM/Timekeeper) is empty, it loses the content with the next power-cycling. The contents only "survives" a warm-start.
If the fault is caused by the empty battery, either get a replacement NVRAM or use the instructions [*NVRAM Battery Fix FAQ*|http://www.bhargavaz.net/nvram/].

  • Sun xfire 4150 fails to boot into 64bit kernel

i can only get this server to boot into the 32 bit kernel it flatly refuses to boot into its 64 kernel. This is the default grub settings the installer sets up.
This is mostly annoying cause this server was supplied directly by sun

There's an update over at netkas.org which provides instructions on how to enable the 64-bit kernel in Snow Leopard for the Unibody MacBooks, which seem to be inhibited in booting up with this capability due to an artificial restriction in the Boot.efi:
    http://netkas.org/?p=189#comments
The procedure involves downloading a modified Boot.efi file and entering some commands in Terminal.
However, I haven't been able to get it to work on my Unibody MacBook because after entering the final command in Terminal:
    "sudo bless −−folder /System/Library/CoreServices/ \
    −−file /System/Library/CoreServices/boot64.efi"
I receive a "No Volume specified" error message.
If anyone can get this to work on their systems I would be grateful for some help. It seems you can't simply copy and paste the commands given in the blog but need to manually enter "--" within the last command. I'm not sure if the proper entry consists of two dashes, one after the other, or the "¨" key which is located directly below the "!" on my (Swiss German) keyboard.

  • Sun Ultra 24 CPU fan - bogus fail message

I have a Sun Ultra 24. When booting, it says the CPU fan is failing, and wants to shut down. I looked at the system, and this error message appears to be wrong; the fan inside the heatsink mounted on top of the CPU is spinning, as is the case fan.
I saw another post elsewhere here saying that it's a BIOS problem, and that updating the BIOS will help. I tried that, but no dice. Suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Fredrik

Solved. Using the 1.4 support DVD, I 1) upgraded BIOS, and 2) upgraded the Intel management engine thingy. Then for good measure, I cleared the CMOS.

  • Installation Failures - Sun Ultra 60

Hello. I am having an issue installing Solaris 8, 9, or 10 on a newly acquired Sun Ultra 60.
I am new to Solaris Hardware and SPARC but I have installed the above operating systems on x86 systems before. The installation CDs are also for SPARC.
Here is the problem, when I to boot from the CD-ROM (regardless of operating system version) I get the following messsage:
Boot device: cdrom File and args:
    failed to read super block
    Boot load failed.
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
    ok
I am not worried about preserving any data on the hard disks and want a clean install.
    Please help!!!!

Thanks for the help. Here is the output from the commands.
Line from "devalias" for the cdrom:
    cdrom /pci@1f, 4000/scsi@3/disk@6, 0:f

  • Sun Ultra 24 - BIOS Update problem

I have a Sun Ultra 24 where I attempted to update the BIOS to v1.5 using the Sun Tools CD v1.3. After successful install and validation of the BIOS, I am at a POST screen where I have the option to press F1 to load default values or F2 to run setup.
The problem is that my USB keyboards are not being recognized. I have tried all USB ports and two different USB keyboards. The system gives a beep, recognizing that the keyboards are being plugged in and out, and the Caps lock LED is lit for just a second, but after that it is not recognized.
The internal LED BIOS POST code is showing "85", indicating (from the Sun manual): 1. USB final initialization. 2. Switch screen back to text mode.
I have also attempted to remove and replace the BIOS battery.
Any other thoughts as to how I can recover my BIOS or get the system to recognize a USB keyboard? I do not have any PS2 ports on this system.
    Thanks for any assistance.

I posted too soon, I was able to find another way to update the BIOS, and this worked. For some reason, my keyboard would not work earlier to enter the BIOS settings, but I was able to use Ctrl+Home to update the BIOS from my USB flash drive.
Here are the instructions from the Sun 820-2480-11 document:
Corrupted BIOS: System Does Not Perform POST
An interrupted or failed BIOS update, might result in a corrupted BIOS, which could
cause the system to fail POST and not boot. To resolve this, perform the following
    BIOS recovery procedure:
    1. Copy the file /BIOS/BIOSxxx.ROM from the Tools and Drivers DVD to the
root directory of a USB flash drive.
    2. On the flash drive, rename the file BIOSxxx.ROM to AMIBOOT.ROM.
    3. Insert USB flash drive into an available USB port on the workstation.
    4. Power on the workstation, press and hold the Ctrl + Home keys, and watch the
    USB flash drive’s access light.
    5. When the flash drive’s access light starts to blink, release the keys.
    6. Follow the onscreen instructions to recover system BIOS.
This procedure will be added to the Sun Ultra 24 Workstation Service Manual.

If I recall correctly, Solaris 10 needs a minimum of 768MB of RAM to install and 1GB or more of RAM to run, even if you had a cpu that was fast enough to run anything.
    Perhaps consider it this way:
Would you even dream of trying to install MS Windows 7 on a Pentium-I at 300MHz?
Stay with your Solaris 8. It's from the same late 1990's era as that hardware and fits it just right.

  • Sun Ultra 5

    Hi everybody,
    I have buyed a Sun Ultra 5 used with Solaris 8 pre-installed.
When I turn-on power the system starts but I havent openboot prompt. I want install Solaris 10. How I can start openboot's prompt and run the command "boot cdrom"?

The STOP-N keyboard sequence is a great beginning for any used SPARC system.
It will reset all firmware settings to their factory default values.
There's no telling what the previous owners may have done
to enter custom settings in its OBP. (you can memorize "N" for normal if that helps)
You hold those keys until you see a signal finally get to your monitor.
It will be uncomfortable, but they need to be held that long.
Once that is done you can use a different keyboard sequence
to get to the OBP prompt.
STOP-A will end the boot-up process and get you to the OK prompt.
Here is a link to the OBP 3.x Command Reference Manual.

  • Sun Ultra 25 - Bad magic number in disk label

I have a Sun Ultra 25 SPARC that is booting fine to it's 80GB SATA drive. Solaris 10, OpenBoot 4.22.19.
    Here's what I did:
I installed a 2TB Western Digital SATA drive into the HDD1 slot.
I formatted the disk in the HDD1 slot via the format command, labeled the disk, and divided it into partitions.
I then used newfs to build the ufs on all partitions.
I mirrored the disk in HDD0 to the disk in HDD1 using ufsdump for all partitions. The data is accessible and looks ok.
After this was done I did an installboot to /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0 (the / partition of the HDD1 slot).
I then did a fsck on every partition to verify that they are okay.
I then took the hard drive in HDD1 and put it in the HDD0 slot, now wanting to boot off that disk.
    At the reboot:
Bad magic number in disk label
    Can't open disk label package
    If I do a probe-scsi:
MPT Version 1.05, Firmware Version 1.08.03.00
    Target 0
Unit 0 Disk ATA WDC WD20EADS-00R0A01 3907029168 Bocks, 2000 GB SATA device PhyNum 0
As far as I can tell disk0 is the correct devalias which is:
    /pci@1e,600000/pci@0/pci@9/pci@0/scsi@1/disk@0,0
I just don't understand how the fsck is okay, but the boot give bad magic number in disk label?
The 80GB drive in HDD slot 0 works fine with the boot disk0 command, all I'm doing is swapping a larger disk with the same data for the smaller disk.

if it is like any other Sun product, it needs to go through the format command and get a volname.... it is just a label, but it needs to be done.
