Sun Ultra 40 Workstation & eSATA

I am trying to add an eSATA card into my Ultra 40 Workstation and I am getting the following message:
Expansion ROM not initialized - PCI Mass Storage Controller on Motherboard. Bus:02 Device:00 Function:00
I am able to hit F1 to continue past this message but I would like to get my settings adjusted properly so that the message goes away.
I have flashed to the latest BIOS (1.6) and that does not seem to help.
Please let me know what I can do...
2 Dual Core Opteron 280's
8 GB Memory
250 GB - 7200 RPM SATA drive
NVIDIA Quadro FX3500 Graphics Accelerator
BIOS 1.6

Okay.... since no one had a solution for me I did some experimenting on my own.... Here is what I discovered...
The eSATA card I was trying to use has a Silicon Image chipset on it... I think this is where the actual problem lies... not with the bios on my Ultra 40.
I tried a different eSATA card with a VIA chipset and it seems to be working just fine. No boot errors and once I found the drivers I needed, the card is functioning just fine in the Windows Server 2003 x64 and Windows Vista x64. I will load also be loading the machine with Vista x86 when I get a chance.
So the bottom line is that there seems to be a compatibility issue with the Silicon Image chipset on the eSATA card and either the BIOS or chipset on the Ultra 40 workstation.
Hope this helps someone else one day.

Is there any suggestions on what to do next to get the system up and running or just to get Solaris 8 to start load, anyone????

Keep in mind that you'll get no output to any screen until you connect a Sun-branded keyboard-and-mouse kit. Do NOT force a PS/2 keyboard into the systemboard port else you'll damage it.
That screen must also be capable of displaying Sun's default resolution of 1152x900 at a vertical refresh of 60Hz. If the monitor cannot do that, it will commonly stay black.

  • Problem installing RHEL4 on Sun Ultra 40M2 workstation

    Hi all
I have Sun Ultra40M2 workstation with Solaris10 operating system. It contains 4 hard disks.
I want to install RHEL4 on one of the hard disk, however I am not able to complete the installation.
Installation proceeds up to configuration of the disk space and then it displays the message showing no hard disk found. I think this problem is due to SATA hard disk present in the system and in my opinion RHEL4 does not provide SATA support.
Is there any way to install RHEL4 on my system.
    Please help
    Thanks in advance

check bios. perhaps there is some "legacy mode" in sata/disk
    settings.

  • Cannot connect to the Internet with my Sun Ultra 20 Workstation

    Hi Everyone,
I am very new to Solaris world. I have an Ultra 20M running Solaris 10 (x86), and a Linksys 350N router connected to a cable modem. But I am not able to go online. Please can you help me with the commands or steps I need to take for configuring the Solaris for accessing the Internet ?.
    Any help, is much appreciated!
    Thank you,

Are you using the router to do any verification the cable company needs? I assume so and if you are not I would set it up so it does (if it is even needed with cable internet).
After that it should be simply a matter of turning on DHCP. The easiest way is to type sys-unconfig as root. That will 'reset' all of the important network settings. Choose dhcp. The default router address is probably something like 192.168.0.1 or 1.1
I believe that will be both your gateway and dns.
This all assumes you are using the router as a router and not a switch.
You can then use the router as a firewall and dmz your ultra if you feel like connecting to it from the outside (if you have a static ip for your router).
Same goes with windows, linux, BSD, Apple etc... nothing solaris specific but the sys-unconfig bit.

  • Issues connecting to serial port A from Linux to Sun Ultra 2 workstation

    All,
I've been working on this for a couple weeks now. I started off with a couple of modular connectors and tried making my own adapters. I followed the wiring diagrams, and even tried numerous ALTERNATE wiring diagrams for a null modem cable. The most i could get was to be able to watch the Ultra 2 boot from Minicom in linux. I can't send anything, not even break. Finally, frustrated, i ordered a real null modem cable - DB25M to DB9F. I made sure the jumpers were set on the mainboard for RS232. You can imagine my frustration, then, when i discovered this morning that i STILL could not send keystrokes over the serial cable.
I am at the end of my rope. I cannot imagine what else i need to do. Minicom is set to use ttyS0 @ 96008N1.
Any tips, guys? I'm ready to give this machine away to someone with an Annex or or wyse terminal since i'm failling so hard.

I have a solution - in the CMC, set the repo to use DNS. You need to first create an appropriate entry in the <install dir>/sap_bobj/enterprise_xi40/odbc.ini and then create an equivalent entry on your client ODBC settings.

  • Programming Challenge -- Your chance to win an Ultra 20 Workstation.

In order to celebrate our first ever release of early Alpha bits of Sun Studio
Compilers for Linux OS we've decided to give all of you a chance to experience
first hand how indispensable our tools can be in the most challenging situations
when you have to tune the last possible drop of performance out of your app and
also to have an opportunity to win a blazing fast x64 Sun Ultra 20 Workstation.
Here's how: you participate in the programming challenge by developing
an application that reads alphanumeric strings from standard input
and prints out the top 1000 string occurrences to standard output. The output
of your application should be identical to the output produced by the following
    command:
    $ cat input_file | sort | tail -1000
Turn in your source code, build instructions and binary to the Sun Studio
booth at LinuxWorld 2005 Conference and Expo in Moscone, San Francisco

  • Upgrade for Sun Ultra 60 without DVD--Act II?

    29 January 2012
As I previously marked the original version of this question as Answered, let me return to it in a new thread. I have a Sun Ultra 60 Workstation running Solaris 9, and I wish to upgrade it to Solaris 10 (8/11 version). It will not take Solaris 11. But Solaris 10 only comes as a 2GB .iso image suitable for DVD, not CD. This machine has no DVD burner or reader.
User abrante (Magnus) suggested using lofiadd -a to interpret the .iso file as a logical device, mount the logical device on the system, then use Live Upgrade to create a Solaris 10 boot environment from the image. This all works, except for the last step. I can mount the .iso image as an ordinary file system, and browse through it in the usual way. I was able to load the Live Upgrade software via pkgadd. I was even able to run the Installer executable on the image, direct from the command line. This installed the Live Upgrade software again, but would not install anything else. And the kicker--the Live Upgrade software would not recognize the interpreted image as a Boot Environment. For that matter, it would not recognize the original boot environment on the system as a boot environment. For example:
    unknown# lucurr
ERROR: No boot environments are configured on this system
ERROR: cannot determine boot environment name for mount point </>
    unknown# lustatus
ERROR: No boot environments are configured on this system
ERROR: cannot determine list of all boot environment names
This is rather odd, as the system does boot to a working Solaris 9 system. Trying to use the .iso image--mounted on /mnt--as a source for lucreate gets
ERROR: source bot environment </mnt> does not exist.
ERROR: cannot create new boot environment using options provided.
OK, so what's the missing trick? How do I get the Live Upgrade software to recognize boot environments, and in particular how do I get it to recognize the .iso image interpreted by lofi?
Many thanks for your further assistance.
    Sincerely,
    Ian H. Redmount

    Hello, Ian.
I am a happy owner of the old decent Ultra 10, the junior sibling of your Ultra 60. I faced the same problem with Solaris 11 11/11 Error: 'SUNW, UltraSPARC-IIi' is not supported by this release of Solaris. And I have a couple of solutions for you.
      1.  Buy a DVD drive :). I confirm that at least Solaris 10 update 7 installs from DVD and then runs on Ultra 10 flawlessly (I didnt' try current update 10). The only trick is: discard regular Ultra's 40-wire IDE cable, replace it with modern 80-wire one.
      2.  Download Solaris 11 Express (2010/11). I confirm it installs and runs on Ultra 10 flawlessly. Yes, it is n/a on the Oracle web site, but still easily available in torrent networks. Search for "Solaris 11 Express 2010.11", and you will find many torrents. You need "sol-11-exp-201011-text-sparc.iso" (452M) CD image. I believe that downloading Solaris 11 Express is legal.
One more thing - sometimes installer forgets to write a boot block on boot disk, and you may need to run installboot manually after installation.
    Regards,
    Konstantin Andreev.

  • SUN ULTRA 45 fan to loud

It's posible to set a limit of the rpm of the fan or to set a variable rpm adjustment.
I have a SUN ULTRA 45 Workstation and my Problem is: when the fan is turn on only with maximum rpm.
The processor is to 10% used to capacity. The fan runns one minute and than stopt. 5 minutes late the same...
This fan is extrem loud, this isn't practicable in my office.

Yes : you need two little cables and a Sun .pkg software called fanctl. The cable installation on the motherboard is relatively easy, you can make that yourself. The soft needs no any parametrage, it works automatically after installation (pkgadd).
To obtain both cables + fanctl, the only way i know is to open a thread by the hotline of your country. Hopefully is your woikstation under garanty, otherwise maybe it's possible to get both paying ?

  • Sun Ultra 24 - BIOS Update problem

I have a Sun Ultra 24 where I attempted to update the BIOS to v1.5 using the Sun Tools CD v1.3. After successful install and validation of the BIOS, I am at a POST screen where I have the option to press F1 to load default values or F2 to run setup.
The problem is that my USB keyboards are not being recognized. I have tried all USB ports and two different USB keyboards. The system gives a beep, recognizing that the keyboards are being plugged in and out, and the Caps lock LED is lit for just a second, but after that it is not recognized.
The internal LED BIOS POST code is showing "85", indicating (from the Sun manual): 1. USB final initialization. 2. Switch screen back to text mode.
I have also attempted to remove and replace the BIOS battery.
Any other thoughts as to how I can recover my BIOS or get the system to recognize a USB keyboard? I do not have any PS2 ports on this system.
    Thanks for any assistance.

I posted too soon, I was able to find another way to update the BIOS, and this worked. For some reason, my keyboard would not work earlier to enter the BIOS settings, but I was able to use Ctrl+Home to update the BIOS from my USB flash drive.
Here are the instructions from the Sun 820-2480-11 document:
Corrupted BIOS: System Does Not Perform POST
An interrupted or failed BIOS update, might result in a corrupted BIOS, which could
cause the system to fail POST and not boot. To resolve this, perform the following
    BIOS recovery procedure:
    1. Copy the file /BIOS/BIOSxxx.ROM from the Tools and Drivers DVD to the
root directory of a USB flash drive.
    2. On the flash drive, rename the file BIOSxxx.ROM to AMIBOOT.ROM.
    3. Insert USB flash drive into an available USB port on the workstation.
    4. Power on the workstation, press and hold the Ctrl + Home keys, and watch the
    USB flash drive’s access light.
    5. When the flash drive’s access light starts to blink, release the keys.
    6. Follow the onscreen instructions to recover system BIOS.
This procedure will be added to the Sun Ultra 24 Workstation Service Manual.

  • Sun Ultra 3 Mobile Workstation aka Mezostation999 - lack of documentation.

    Hello.
For a long time looking for documentation and drivers for this model.
I understand that without a service plan i will not get the drivers. But there is documentation available somewhere?
I'm really desperate - pre-installed Solaris 10 (03/05) works great. but I'd like to know more about this nice hardware and try to install a newer system(the problem is WLAN and VGA)
Does anyone have experience with Ultra3 and can help me?

Indeed, even the Internet archive does not contain much information on this topic.
I am surprised that there are no data on oracle.com about hardware who has not reached the end of the "Premier Support Ends."
    http://www.oracle.com/us/support/lifetime-support/lifetime-support-hardware-337183.html
Unfortunately this is not the equipment produced by Tadpole. It's a completely different product produced by Naturetch. There were four models of the "Sun Ultra 3":
    A60-UltraSPARC IIi (Tadpole SPARCLE)
CPU: 550 or 650 MHz UltraSPARC IIi
    A60-UltraSPARC IIIi (Tadpole Viper)
    CPU: 1.2 GHz UltraSPARC IIIi
    A61-UltraSPARC IIi (NatureTech 888P)
CPU: 550 or 650 MHz UltraSPARC IIi
    A61-UltraSPARC IIIi (NatureTech Mesostation 999)
    CPU: 1.28 GHz UltraSPARC IIIi
As I mentioned in topic mine model is the latest. Unfortunately the company NatureTech no longer exists.
I spent a really long time search for drivers and documentation. I Even asked the people who had in the past had this laptop.
So... I have a month or two for purchase support. I feels that the only way to get the data I wanted(?)

  • Getting USB on an Ultra 2 workstation?

Is there any way to get USB ports on an old Ultra 2 workstation? i.e. have any SBUS to USB interface cards been made that I might have a chance to get hold of? If not, might the way SBUS -> PCMCIA (via Sun's 501-2367 / X1030A card) -> any cheap ehci pcmcia usb card prove to be successful? I'm currently running Solaris 8, but might upgrade to 10 if necessary.

    Hello,
PCMCIA - USB cards for notebooks are available for a dime a dozen..
While there is a vanishing demand for USB cards for notebooks, because USB 2.0 is now already integrated, you have keep in mind that these cards are not really PCMCIA but CARDBUS 32-bit.
The controller on the S-Bus to PCMCIA adapter doesn't support CARDBUS. If you can locate a non-CARDBUS card with USB 1.1, some slow devices (keyboard, mouse and your kits) might work.
If the PCMCIA card has a golden shield on the upper side of the connector it requires CARDBUS.
I don't know if the drivers for the PCMCIA Adapter (501-2367, X1030) work with later versions of Solaris.
Any low end PCI based Sun (eg. U5/10, Blade 100/150, NetraAX1105-500, etc) can be upgraded with an inexpensive PCI-USB 2.0 card. The integrated USB is only 1.1 not 2.0.
Btw. don't assign Duke Stars if you don't reward them. haroldb still needs them to get his silver star...
