Sun Ultra 5 / Newbie Question

Hello. I am a student preparing for a career in Deskside Support. I recently purchased a Sun Ultra 5, so I could increase my experience with UNIX / LINUX. When the system powers up it goes through what seems to be a normal boot process and then keeps repeating the below error:
SUN, hme0 : No response from Ethernet network : Link down -- cable problem?
I am assuming that it is looking for some sort of a network connection. It is not on nor will it be on a network. I also have a copy of Ubuntu on the way, as I have heard this is a good source of LINUX experience. Does the forum have any thoughts or comments on what the error is saying and how to get rid of it?

It keeps repeating. I think it has something to do with it looking for booth instructions off the network it was on. I also feel one of the boot proms need reseting. It never gets to root / UNIX prompt. I can STOP -A and get to OpenBoot prompt and SETENV / PRINTENV and run baisc diag but no more.
When I reboot from OpenBoot with the "boot cdrom" command here is what I get.

Urgent question about two monitors for Sun Ultra 40 M2

Hello,
I feel extremely unhappy to ask you the following.
I bought recently a Sun Utra 40 M2. I thought that with NVIDA Quadro FX1500 one could have two monitors as there are two DVI-D 's to connect with two monitors.
But today I heard from SUN support that Sun does not support two monitors under SUN Solaris 10. It is possible with Linux on this SUN Ultra 40, but not with Solaris, so it was told to me.
But: is this true? I still can not believe it.

Solaris 2.6 upgrade to version 8 on SUN ULTRA 10

Dear Mr. or Mrs:
I met the same question as uxdms who left the message on Dec 20,2001.
When I was trying to upgrade from solaris 2.6 to 8 release , there is "failed" warning and the upgrade isn't created.
There is a detailed info:
Mechine: SUN ULTRA 10

Installation step:
Accordidng to the guide of installation, run step by step,
and there are some special steps below:
(1) use the /dev/dsk /c0t0d0s4 as disk slice to upgrade.
(2) selet networked
(3) don't use DHCP
(4) disable IPv6
(5) no NIS+, NIS, DNS ..
.... displaying the wolcome to solaris dialog box
(1) Solaris 8 installation SPARC Platform Edition is ejected.
(2) prompted to insert the Solaris 8 software 1 of 2.
(3)After selecting serial the dialog box of the upgrade..

Domain name settings - Newbie question

Sorry for a newbie question!
I am already pointing a domain name to web hosting for email account. Now, I need an application server to run ERP software and Oracle, and installing Solaris and Oracle need a domain name.
If I point my domain name to the server, how do I receive emails from web hosting???
Install an email server to the application server instead? What can I do if I want the same domain name? Any option?

Setting up a mailserver and making sure it doesn't suddenly turn into a spambox is not something you do with the use of a few commands. I suggest to dive into the Solaris admin guide on docs.sun.com and read up on e-mail and network services.
If that is asking too much of your time you'll be better off getting your ISP to handle all this for you.

You particular question is in the <i>"how can I install Solaris while using the CD drive"</i> forum.
So, if you had a question on how to edit the /etc/inet/hosts file to establish a FQDN on the computer, then it might be appropriate for the forum.
Unfortunately, I don't have a clue on where to redirect you, except perhaps to the Sun Java Enterprise System suite of applications?

Prom Security on Sun Ultra 10 Workstation

Just purchase a Sun Ultra 10 Workstation from my company. When I took the system home, it would boot with the follow sequence:

The system locks and thats all she wrote. I have tried using STOP-A commands with no luck. It looks like the Prom Security must be enabled because the documentation specifies that these commands will not work if prom security is enabled.
Attempted to install Solaris 8 and other that this initial CD lights indicating that a cd was loaded, I cannot get beyond this.
Is there any suggestions on what to do next to get the system up and running or just to get Solaris 8 to start load, anyone????

Keep in mind that you'll get no output to any screen until you connect a Sun-branded keyboard-and-mouse kit. Do NOT force a PS/2 keyboard into the systemboard port else you'll damage it.
That screen must also be capable of displaying Sun's default resolution of 1152x900 at a vertical refresh of 60Hz. If the monitor cannot do that, it will commonly stay black.

Upgrade for Sun Ultra 60 without DVD?

I have a Sun Ultra 60 (SUNW, UltraSPARC-II, 64-bit) currently running Solaris 9. The Ultra 60 was listed on the HCL for the Solaris 11 Express release last year, so I assumed it would run Solaris 11. But having downloaded Solaris 11 11/11 and burned it to CD, I get the error message:
Error: 'SUNW, UltraSPARC-II' is not supported by this release of Solaris. Program terminated.
Problem #1: The Solaris 11 Express release, which might work, is no longer available. Problem #2: The Solaris 10 8/11 release, which should certainly work, is available only on DVD or as an .iso image to be burned to DVD. (Too large for a CD, I presume.) The machine has neither a DVD reader nor burner, and obtaining one looks like a budget buster, even assuming I could find a driver for it for Solaris 9. So: Is there a way to get a version of Solaris 11 which will run on the Ultra 60, or a version of Solaris 10 on multiple CD's, or some other work-around? It is an odd situation that Oracle has a product which I wish to buy, but cannot find a form in which to sell it to me.

Thank you for your reply. No, Live Upgrade does not address my problem:
1) I do not have the Live Update software on this machine. Where would I get it?
2) Live Upgrade still requires a source from which to update the mirror image of the boot environment it produces. The Oracle White Paper on the subject mentions the Solaris 10 DVD. If I could read the DVD, or if I had another source of Solaris 10, I would have no problem to begin with.
We have to break out of the circular reasoning here. So the question remains: Where or how do I get a non-DVD form of the Solaris 10 operating system?

GTK in Sun Studio project (question)

I'm new to Sun Studio. My background is 22 years c/c++ non-unix development (embedded systems & Windows application development).
I'm trying to write a GUI based c++ app for Solaris. I know this is a complete newbie question. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
Here's my question/issue: I cannot seem to include <gtk.h>. I've installed every GTK/ GTKMM package I can find. Building/deploying any project that does not use GTK is fine. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to build a GTK app. Even the GtkFreeway example app for Sun Studio fails to compile at #include <gtk.h>.
So, how do I set up my environment to include gtk headers and link with the appropriate libraries.

You can use the IDE. Add the path to the gtk.h include directory in the compiler option dialog.
For example, if gtk.h is in /opt/gtk/include, add /opt/gtk/include to the list of -I options.
If the error you get is
Could not open include file "gtk.h"
it's due to the missing path.
If you get some other error, please post the error output.
Your experience with <> and "" for include directives is misleading. You can make incorrect inferences due to not testing every possible combination of headers locations and #include directives..
The C++ standard says the <> form is required for standard headers. It goes on to say that the search method for the "" and <> forms is implementation-defined. The search method for Sun C++ is described in the C++ Users Guide

The details of lookup vary only slightly among modern compilers. If you use <> for system headers and "" for project headers, you should expect to get the right result. The <> form can prevent local directories from being searched, which is appropriate for system includes, but not for project includes.

How to install Solaris 10 on sun ultra enterprise 450

I just got a used sun ultra enterprise 450 and need to get a username and password. If I cannot get easily how do I reinstall the OS. What OS can I put on its? I am new to some equipment. It also came with a a storage unit for extra hard drives and how would I use it and set it up also?
It now says type ctrl-d. What do I do?

Parallel port programming for a Sun Ultra 5 running Solaris 8

Hi I'm trying to look for information about reading/writing to the parallel port of a Sun Ultra 5 running Solaris 8. I'd just like to see some basic programs written in C, nothing fancy, just reading and wrting to the port, getting the port address etc. toggling the lines.
I've tried searching for this information and there is plenty of information about PC parallel port programming with windows or Linux. But there seems to be little for Sun's
I've tried doing 'man ecpp' but that doesn't really give any clear example. What I need is an idiots guide.
I've tried searching this Forum and I see that other people have asked the same question before but no one has replied to them. Why is this?

Upgrade for Sun Ultra 60 without DVD--Act II?

As I previously marked the original version of this question as Answered, let me return to it in a new thread. I have a Sun Ultra 60 Workstation running Solaris 9, and I wish to upgrade it to Solaris 10 (8/11 version). It will not take Solaris 11. But Solaris 10 only comes as a 2GB .iso image suitable for DVD, not CD. This machine has no DVD burner or reader.
User abrante (Magnus) suggested using lofiadd -a to interpret the .iso file as a logical device, mount the logical device on the system, then use Live Upgrade to create a Solaris 10 boot environment from the image. This all works, except for the last step. I can mount the .iso image as an ordinary file system, and browse through it in the usual way. I was able to load the Live Upgrade software via pkgadd. I was even able to run the Installer executable on the image, direct from the command line. This installed the Live Upgrade software again, but would not install anything else. And the kicker--the Live Upgrade software would not recognize the interpreted image as a Boot Environment. For that matter, it would not recognize the original boot environment on the system as a boot environment. For example:

This is rather odd, as the system does boot to a working Solaris 9 system. Trying to use the .iso image--mounted on /mnt--as a source for lucreate gets
ERROR: source bot environment </mnt> does not exist.
ERROR: cannot create new boot environment using options provided.
OK, so what's the missing trick? How do I get the Live Upgrade software to recognize boot environments, and in particular how do I get it to recognize the .iso image interpreted by lofi?

I am a happy owner of the old decent Ultra 10, the junior sibling of your Ultra 60. I faced the same problem with Solaris 11 11/11 Error: 'SUNW, UltraSPARC-IIi' is not supported by this release of Solaris. And I have a couple of solutions for you.
1. Buy a DVD drive :). I confirm that at least Solaris 10 update 7 installs from DVD and then runs on Ultra 10 flawlessly (I didnt' try current update 10). The only trick is: discard regular Ultra's 40-wire IDE cable, replace it with modern 80-wire one.
2. Download Solaris 11 Express (2010/11). I confirm it installs and runs on Ultra 10 flawlessly. Yes, it is n/a on the Oracle web site, but still easily available in torrent networks. Search for "Solaris 11 Express 2010.11", and you will find many torrents. You need "sol-11-exp-201011-text-sparc.iso" (452M) CD image. I believe that downloading Solaris 11 Express is legal.
One more thing - sometimes installer forgets to write a boot block on boot disk, and you may need to run installboot manually after installation.

This is caused by the default security policy which blocks file sharing with unidentified networks by making them public. (How it determines unidentified networks is another interesting question). To allow file sharing, you have to change the local
security policy to allow unidentified networks to be private.

Does anyone know the disk drive height limitation of Sun Ultra model 140E? What are the disk drive interfaces supported by it? I'm having a hard time looking for documents indicating Sun Ultra 1 model 140E's specifications and limitations.

this is probably a misunderstanding !
I read his inquiries, posted answers, then reviewed his profile (Recent Messages) and realized that he asked exactly this kind of questions before. He got very detailed answers from haroldb and me (I re-activated my second screen name due to the announced changes regarding case sensitive screen names).
These forums are user-to-user, not paid Sun support. One of the prequisites is to investigate before asking.
I try to provide background information (links to the source of information) instead of just a brief answer. It's worth the effort to tell how and where to locate information ("Teach people how to fish instead of just feed them").
What do you think, which answer takes more time for me ?

I know it's a windows thing, and I am now converted to Mac but I gotta know this because it's doing my head in. It's a complete stupid green gilled newbie question.
When installing new programs on a Mac can you create shortcuts to the programs on the Dock? I did what I THOUGHT it would be, i.e I made an Alias and stuck it in the dock, but on rebooting my Mac later on, in place of the shortcuts where 3 question marks which when clicked on did absolutely nothing???

You aren't installing something from a dmg file are you? The dmg is a disk image – kind of a virtual CD. So when you double click the dmg and then get the little disk/hardrive/custom icon on your desktop that is the same as if you had mounted a CD. You then need to drag the application off of that "CD" into your application folder. Then it is truly installed.
You can then "eject" the icon your your desktop. This is what happens when you shutdown and without remounting the image your dock shortcut can't find the original.
Just a thought.

I don't know exactly what is the origin of the problem, How to solver or how to prevent to avoid further problems. This is the first time I have had this Kind of problem on my Server SUN.

Unless you've somehow maintained a service contract on that system,
by specific system serial number,
your best bet is to haunt an online auction site (such as Ebay),
and get a replacement cpu or cpus for shelf stock.
Your current OBP patch level is only down two patch levels,
but your kernel patch level is essentially "never patched".
If it were patched better it may have noticed the issue a lot sooner.
Expect to replace that cpu.
