Sun ultra 80 Elite 3d hardware issue.Won't boot

Good day,
I'm trying to boot a ultra 80 elite 3D.The memory's are the same.It used to work until I added an extra CPU(same Rev.).The machine powers on then after 30 second I get a low beep sound and thats it,nothing appens :(
Is there something im missing?
thanks in advance,
Mart.

Hello Mart,
please review the keyboard plug, these pins bent very easily.
There are occasions when a direct-connect keyboard can help,
e.g. when the system was powered down by power management and there is no key-switch to power-on ...
STOP-A is basically a BREAK (use ALT+B in TeraTerm Pro to generate this signal).
During POST the LEDs of the direct-attached keyboard show the current status of POST.
and there are times when it is best to remove it and go with
the console connection, off the TTYa port.
The early phase of POST is only visible on the console (serial, RSC, LOM, ALOM), because the display adapter (integrated or add-in board) isn't initialized yet.
If a monitor doesn't support the current display mode, the monitor doesn't sync and the ability to change the mode via serial console is very valuable.
Sometimes reverting to the default OBP settings is required. Either use STOP-N with a direct attached keyboard or BREAK via console and then
set-defaults
setenv auto-boot? false
reset-all
As mentioned before, not properly seated memory modules can cause this hang.

  • MacBookpro Early 2011 graphic issue won't boot

    Hello,
My Early 2011 MacBookPro suddenly suffered from graphics issues for a few days then it won't boot at all.
The hardware test says it is ok and my hard drive too. But when I want to boot, the apple appears and the dong too, but then blank screen. It is the same with a bootcamp boot, but with a blue screen with lines all over the screen. The recovery partition doesn't start either. But I can access boot from my hard drive with another Mac on target mode.
Anyway Apple doesn't admit there's a problem a want me to pay the reparation, because they don't report it as a real problem, saying that I damaged the computer. But there are threads here and all over the internet, and they don't want to do anything.
On the phone, the apple guy told me that I had to pay 80$ to see if there is any problem , and " maybe if we see there's a fabrication problem, we'll fix it for free ". Do I have to trust them ? What can I do to ?
    Thank you

You should at least add your experience and see if those who have come up with 'quick fixes' can help you with your problem.

  • Dual 2.5 cooling issue:  Won't boot.

I have a dual 2.5 G5 that I've had since it was new in in july 2004. It's never given me any problems.
Recently it started "gurgling" (it's the best way to describe it). I was worried about the dreaded leaking issue so I tore it apart looking for leaks.
Good news: No leaks. Bad news, it won't boot now.
In the process of assessing the situation I checked the coolant level. To my surprise the system was pressurized quite a bit, even though it was stone cold. I don't understand this. I also get the red LED's on the mother board glowing indicating overheat, the cooling fans run at high velocity, and the computer won't boot.
I am in the process of rebuilding the water pump as a preventative measure, resealing the two O-rings and the diaphragm. Everything seems in working order.
I hope it will boot once I reassemble it, but I'm in a situation where I MUST have it up and running by monday.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi tarmaque-
It may not be so much about pressure as air in the system. You said yourself that it was pressurized when you disassembled it. That is a huge clue! That fact alone would certainly make me think that there should be pressure.
I think the higher boiling point under pressure is a factor. There isn't much fluid and it must dissipate a lot of heat.
Water cooled engines absolutely are "pressurized"-ever take a radiator cap off of a hot engine? A cooling system must be able to handle pressure as (duh Daddy) liquids expand when hot.
    Luck-

  • K7N420 Pro -- RAM issues -- won't boot/crashes

    System info:
    CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1900+
    Motherboard Model: K7N420 Pro
Memory: (Varying, this is the problem, explained in post: but to begin with the system had 2 modules of 256MB PC2100 266mHz. Brand name unknown, some generic manufacturer. For reference's sake, the motherboard has THREE memory slots)
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce2 Integrated GPU, GeForce2 Integrated GPU, 32MB
    Hard Drive: Western Digital 80GB
Other cards: None that I know of
Operating System: Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2
    Power Source: Addtronics 300w (3.3v/18a, 5v/30a, 12v/9a)
Okay, so obviously we've got an old, old beast here.... But she's served me well, and I'd like to get a little more out of her. So here's the ongoing (very long, I'm sorry) saga:
The computer started doing crashing on me some time ago; lots of Blue Screens of Death, no error messages that gave me anything reliable to use for diagnostic purposes. Eventually it just wouldn't even manage to boot, each time would give me a BSOD. I opened the case up, checked for anything obviously visually wrong (blown capacitors etc), did a good thorough aircan dusting, popped out the two 256MB chips (let us call them Chip and Dale), and popped them back in.
This did indeed have a result- now we didn't even make it to the BSOD! All I got was a repeated ominous beeping and nothing coming onto the monitor at all. I then tried to put in only one chip at a time. Results: Chip works in slots #1 and #2, but not #3; Dale works not at all. (By "works" I mean the computer boots normally and runs normally, for at least an hour, the most I've tested it. Runs SLOW, of course, at 256MB, but runs. By "not works" I mean we get nothing on-screen, and the repeated ominous beeping.)
I presumed I had bad memory on my hands with Dale and that I needed new memory anyways, so I headed to Fry's and picked up two sticks of Patriot 512MB PC2100 DDR 266mHz-- the same specs as the old memory, excepting that it is 512MB instead of the 256. (According to Crucial.com, my motherboard's slots should each be able to support 512MB.) Let's call the Patriot 512 chips Bill and Ted.
Results with the new memory: Neither will work in slot #3. Logic dictates slot #3 is bad. Bill will work in slot #1 or slot #2. Ted will work only in slot #1. The computer will NOT boot if both Bill and Ted are occupying slots. (It also won't boot if Chip is occupying a slot and either Bill or Ted are in another slot.)
(Doesn't this sound like like one of those old logic problems where you have to sort out who owns which house?)
So the best I can get out of her right now is to stick Bill or Ted into slot #1 and proceed with the same 512MB that Chip and Dale used to give me back when they cooperated. However, new wrinkle: neither Bill nor Ted will get along with the computer for anything more than about a half-hour-- then, the computer crashes, tries to auto-reboot, and starts doing Black Screen and Ominous Beeping again. The RAM has to be popped out and put back in before it will boot normally.
*deep breath* I know that was long, thanks to anybody who read this far. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing these problems and/or how to fix it? I've reached the end of all the knowledge I can put to work on this problem.
If I haven't been clear on anything, please let me know, I'll try to answer.

    Hello,
Are you 100% sure that slot 3 is clean/dust free?
Memtest is a program that writes patterns to the memory.
The program then tries to recall the pattern(data) stored in the memory location.
If the memory is faulty the pattern(data) may have altered (goes corrupt) and the program will report an error.
Use just 1 stick at a time in slot 1.
Patriot Bill, let memtest run for say 3 hours.
If everything is ok you will not see any errors on the screen.
Then turn off and remove patriot Bill.
Insert patriot Ted into slot 1.
Run memtest again for 3 hours.
Again if everything is ok after the 3 hours it means that both Bill and Ted are ok.

  • Hardware Issue - Won't Accept CD's

Last night I was using my CD on the Mac Mini, and after exjecting the CD it made a few NEW noises. Now I attempt to put a CD back in, it seems to have something on the right blocking the CD from being inserted.
I have no problem opening this machine (yes, I know how), but I'd like to know if anyone else experienced the same problem AND fixed it. I figure the CD drive got jammed in the eject mode, and hasn't reset.
Suggestions? (BTW: I've already tried the re-boot holding the eject button down twice - no dice)
    Mac Mini (PowerPC G4) 1.25ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

OK, it works fine for now.
After getting the proper sized screwdriver from Home Depot, I was able to open the cover to the Super Drive directly (4 screws).
The one actually blocking the CD from entering was lock (if I forced it, it would have broken), but towards the back of the dive another arm was engaged, so I gently pushed it back on the same plan as a CD would -- it was a little stiff but it worked. That move then disengaged the other portion blocking the CD from entering. Then, I reinstalled in back into the Mac - make sure the Mac is off (yes, I left the drive cover off).
After booting up the mac, the drive when through it check cycle (the parts actually raised above the plan). Once that worked, I inserted the CD. It worked fine without having the drive cover on top - I could see the full CD spins like normal. I tested it and made sure I could access informational, and it all worked fine.
That's it folks. I save money (for now $110) and have my mini up and running again.
Since it really had no reason to break in the first place, it's likely that the error might happen again, but until then - I have a working drive.
(Sorry, next time I'll take photos)

  • Passed hardware test, won't boot

I am trying to get my 2008 iMac running again.  I replaced the hard drive after it quit working.  I have the boot cd in and when I ran the hardware test there were
No issues.  All that I get is the missing file (flashing question mark) screen.  I can't get it in verbose, or boot it from the cd.  I've been using mac since the early 80's and have never had to have one professionally fixed.  Any ideas?

I know... I can't figure out why it won't.  I've even tried multiple keyboards to be sure... It stays on the gray screen longer than usual, and goes to the missing file icon.

  • MacBook Pro HD issues; won't boot to any drive; need to recover data

*Apologies in advance for the lengthy post. I just want to be sure I include as much detail as possible. Thanks in advance for reading all of this and offering any thoughts and suggestions.
    I have a 13-inch late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.
The computer recently began booting slower and slower until finally one day it did nothing but show the gray boot screen with the apple and a spinning circle and/or progress bar at the bottom. It won't do anything else. I assume it's the HD; no surprise there. What's killing me is that no matter what I do, I can't boot to any disk, internal or external, can't mount it in target disk mode, and can't repair it or recover data, which is a first for me with any HD. However, the computer still clearly sees the drive, and the drive sounds and runs normally (meaning no clicks; appropriate amount of whirs and such).
    What I've done so far:
    Reset PRAM — no help
    Reset SMC — no help
Boot in Safe Mode — same result as regular boot: gray logo screen with spinning wheel
    Disk Utility message:
Verify Disk — "Error: This disk nees to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."
Repair Disk — gets as far as "Checking catalog file" then shows "Keys out of order". Next is "Rebuilding catalog B-tree." Then "The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired."
fsck — same as Disk Utility: "Keys out of order (4, 22016)", "Rebuilding catalog B-tree", then "The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired." FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED." ...over and over again
If I hold Option while starting the computer, it gives me only two drives to boot from, regardless of any other external HDs or flash drives I have attached: Macintosh HD (internal), and Recovery HD (internal partition). If I choose Macintosh HD, it's hit or miss whether it prompts the Disk Utility screen or just gray-screens forever. If I choose Recovery HD, it successfully runs Disk Utility every time. Here's the thing, though — if I attach an external HD, it doesn't see it during the initial Option-startup. However, from Disk Utility I'm able to select a startup disk from the menu to restart into. It sees the externals in there every time and lets me select them as startup disks, but upon restart it returns to the gray Apple logo screen with spinning wheel and/or progress bar at bottom. Sometimes it also sees the internal Macintosh HD here, but selecting that is useless. I can't actually boot from any disk, internal or external, running full OS or even just recovery software.
I've tried using TechTool Pro 8's edisk and ProToGo bootable drives, but again, the MacBook only sees them from Disk Utility only (not on Option-start), and I can select them, but it doesn't actually boot to them; it reverts back to gray screen.
I've installed a full version of OS 10.10.2 on an external hard drive, complete with DiskWarrior 4 on it, but same problem as above — it sees it in the "Select Startup Disk" menu, but not in the initial Option-start or successful reboot.
I've tried booting from a DiskWarrior 4 DVD using C-startup. It recognizes and spins the DVD from the get-go. Eventually it boots to it (after about 20 minutes or so of reading the DVD). I'm able to launch DiskWarrior 4 and start a rebuild. However, it goes all the way through "Step 6: Constructing optimized replacement directory... Overlapped files detected: 7 ...Step 7: Finishing construction ...Step 8: Reading from disc, one moment please..." and then the computer kernel panicked. This happened several times. I reset the PRAM again, then retried DiskWarrior DVD boot, this avoided a kernel panic and it got as far as "Comparing directories... Step 9: Recording any file or folder differences; 3,449,089,956 tests..." and then DiskWarrior and the computer both freeze and I have to force shutdown.
The drive will not mount to another laptop in Target Disk Mode.
Disk Arbitrator immediately sees the the faulty laptop HD, but won't let me mount or unmount it. It's just there, grayed out.
Data Rescue 4 is able to see the faulty laptop HD through Target Disk Mode, even though the drive itself will not mount to my desktop. I am able to scan the drive using DR4, and start a data recovery process. However, DR4 is dumping all recovered data into "User Defined" ai (Adobe Illustrator) files, which makes absolutely no sense at all. What's more, the files aren't able to be opened by any program. Even files that it hasn't recovered into ai files, like txt and mpegs, cannot be opened. I've tried recovering from both the drive itself and from a clone of the drive (made through DR4), with the same result each time.
So, all of that said, I guess my first question is what the **** is going on? The drive mechanically is functioning fine, but there seems to be an issue with its readability (and the directory/files?).
What's more, why won't this laptop mount ANY drive? I should be able to Option-boot into any drive, especially if the USB ports, drives, and OS's are all fully functional, right? Is there any workaround I'm missing? Even if the internal drive and data are just screwed, what's causing a total lack of mounting or booting of any drive, internal or external?

Holy crap, I got it to work.
Essentially, I just waited until DiskWarrior reached Step 9 and told it to skip the step before it had a chance to freeze. It skipped successfully, moved on, rebuilt and replaced the faulty directory files.
So far the computer is booting like normal, I can log in, and I'm currently copying all of the data to an external as I type this.
I still have no idea why the computer wouldn't mount or boot to any drive, but I guess I'll deal with that later.

  • Format issues- won't boot from OSX disc

    Help!
I've been having some issues with my iBook G4 recently (it seems every program will randomly quit unexpectedly and it's generally rather slow) so I was thinking I would just wipe the drive and start afresh.
But I can't seem to boot from the OSX install disc. There's an option in the disc itself to restart and that didn't do anything and pressing "c" while restarting still starts things up normally. I've tried zapping NVRAM, PRAM, I went through OF and did reset-all and set-defaults (I'm not even sure if that was necessary- I'm desperate!) and nothing will work.
    Help, please!

In order to erase your internal hard drive, you have to be booted from something else. I think you could do this from another Mac in FireWire Target Disk Mode, but I have never done this myself.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Is there a reason you don't want to use FireWire?
The biggest problem still seems to be that either your disc or your optical drive is not working properly. Even if you do succeed in erasing the drive, there is still the problem of reinstalling the OS. I think there are methods of doing this with FireWire Target Disk Mode, but I have just never done it myself, so I hesitate to give any instructions.
If you can, you might see if you can borrow an external optical drive and see if you can boot using that. If so, you can erase and reformat your internal drive using Disk Utility and reinstall the OS that way. If an external optical drive won't work, there may be a problem with your disc.
    Good luck!

  • CD/DVD-rom Issues; Won't Boot

Hi, I am having a problem booting when I remove my CD-Rom 'Slave' or try to replace it with a DVD-Rom.
Below I will give my computer specs.
I have  2 hard drives, so the Primary IDE slots hold my 2 hard drives; one a
Master and the second one is the slave to the master.
On the Seconday IDE slots, I also have 2 cd-roms,  one is the master and the
other is the slave to the master. The master is my cd/read/write cd-rom.  I
want to leave it and change the slave cd-rom to a DVD-rom (not a dvd r/w
    rom)...
I bought bestbuys dvd-rom, took out the 'slave' cd-rom and put the dvd-rom
in with the pin set for the slave.  I booted my computer and it wouldn't boot
pass the first booting page.  It wouldn't boot into windows.. What could be
    wrong?????????
I took the new dvd-rom back out and left the secondary slave empty and tried booting and it
wouldn' t boot with nothing in the secondary cd-rom bay ..  wierd to say the
least.. Like I said the secondary IDE slot is the Master of r/w cd-rom and I
never removed it or touched it, it is still there..
I then put my old cd-rom back in the secondary (slave) and waited a few
mintues and booted up my computer.. It booted with no problem.. I repeated
this whole sequence several times with the same results..  I for the life of
can't figure it out... My computer should boot with or without the second
    cd-rom (slave), shouldn't it?????  Adding a cd-rom or a dvd-rom should not keep my
computer from booting up should it?????
In my cmos, I have it set to boot-up with the hard drive as my first
boot-up, the second is the cd-rom.. but I don't see how removing or replacing
the 'slave' cd-rom would prevent it from booting into windows..
Yes, I have check the cables, settings and everything in my whole computer.
Can someone please tell me what is causing this.. I need a dvd-rom drive.
not paticularly the brand of the dvd-rom I just bought (which I have already
took back anyway) but I do need to get a dvd-rom asap in my computer so I am
hoping someone might know a solution to this problem..
    Thanx for any help,

  • IMac won't boot anymore after power cut

Thanks to the great storms in New Jersey, my iMac does not boot anymore after a power cut. Does not get past the apple logo screen with the spinning wheel and keeps rebooting every 2 minutes.
I was able to mount the HD via Firewire on a host machine and the disk seemed fine.
I booted from the Install disk and ran Disk Utility - seemed fine though I could not verify the disk permissions ?
One other thing - I seemed to remember the white light (front bottom right) was blinking before during start-up. Now it goes and stays black after couple of seconds.
    Help please,
    Philippe

HI Phillipe and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
If you haven't done so, try running the Apple Hardware Test.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
I doubt repairing disk permissions can't help this problem. It sounds like a hardware issue.
*"I booted from the Install disk and ran Disk Utility - seemed fine though I could not verify the disk permissions ?"*
When you ran Disk Utility via Firewire, did you actually Verify the hard disk for errors?

  • Memory hardware issue... won't boot

I can't make heads or tails of this one...
I have a dv5z-1000 laptop and up until about 2 weeks ago it was all running okay.
Long story short... I thought the problem was heat and it probably was part of the issue.  I have replaced the thermal pad on the cpu with grease and made a shim for the gpu and also added grease to it.
Anyway.  The laptop won't boot if I have both sticks of memory in it.  I can put each stick of memory in the laptop by themselves and it boots.  However, as soon as I put both sticks in the problems starts...
I have had the same memory for over a year with no problems and I don't know what to try next.

My Server SUN 5.8 has rebooted itself after having been generated internally out of the ordinary events related to CPU.
The log en the file.messages and output of prtdiag is:

I don't know exactly what is the origin of the problem, How to solver or how to prevent to avoid further problems. This is the first time I have had this Kind of problem on my Server SUN.
I appreciate greatly, any tip o help.

Unless you've somehow maintained a service contract on that system,
    by specific system serial number,
your best bet is to haunt an online auction site (such as Ebay),
and get a replacement cpu or cpus for shelf stock.
Your current OBP patch level is only down two patch levels,
but your kernel patch level is essentially "never patched".
If it were patched better it may have noticed the issue a lot sooner.
    Expect to replace that cpu.

  • Sun Ultra 10 with SunStorEDGE A1000/D1000 unable to setup

I realise this covers old ground but I have not been able to trace a uitable resolvement and would be grateful for assistance.
I have a Sun Ultra 10 with 256MB RAM and 440GHz cpu.. It has a pci Adaptec 2944UW HVD SCSI interface card. The storage system is a tray of eight scsi 72GB disks housed in a D1000 case. NetBSD reported it as an A1000 SunStorEDGE at sd0 having 16 targets and 8 luns. However NetBSD did not have a readily available controller to setup the raid system so I installed an alternative. I presume the case is a reused old case housing an A1000 unit.
I tried to format the drives directly but they are not lists as devices such as ct1sd1 etc. and so this is not possible.
I have installed Sun Solaris 10 but could not communicate and reported inability to use rdriver and rdnexus and after reading a number of reports that driver hooks had been removed from the kernel in Solaris 10 I have installed Solaris 9.
On both occasions I installed a number of RAID Manager 6.1.1 control packs, namely SUNWosafw, osar, osau, osamn and vtsse direct from my CD here.
I commanded dr_hotadd.sh to take up the challenge but it failed to communicate.
I added a number of Rdac amendments to rparams in /etc/osa but this did not resolve the issue.
I have tried to call probe-scsi-all after doing a reset-all from the OBP but this fails to report anything. I presume this is because the unit is connected by the interface card rather than a direct scsi disk.
    dmesg pipe grep scsi reports:
    unknown scsi sd0 at uata0 target 2 lun 0
I would be very grateful fr guidance to resolve this connection so that I can create a suitable filestore.
    Thanks
    c

I presume the case is a reused old case housing an A1000 unit.If it's really an A1000, you won't have access to the drives. You'll only see exposed LUNS from the raid controller. Do you have a dial in the rear with a scsi address? That will be the address that the A1000 will respond on. In addition, the A1000 has only one pair of SCSI ports. The D1000 has two pair and doesn't have the scsi adress dial (because each of the disks in the chassis respond on their own addresses). Instead you have some DIP switches to change the addressing behavior.
I tried to format the drives directly but they are not lists as devices such as ct1sd1 etc. and so this is not possible.
I have installed Sun Solaris 10 but could not communicate and reported inability to use rdriver and rdnexus and after reading a number of reports that driver hooks had been removed from the kernel in Solaris 10 I have installed Solaris 9.That's fine. You can ignore them. Neither the A1000 nor D1000 require those drivers. You should still be able to use 'rm6' or the CLI tools to interact with an A1000.

unknown scsi sd0 at uata0 target 2 lun 0So that might be a single LUN from an A1000 controller. If the selector switch in the back is set to '2', then it's even more likely.
