Sun Unified Storage 7000 series

Hi
how do i create a group on these storage. I want to map it to my solaris server so that NFS recognises it?

So first and foremost, Xsan is a filesystem that is formatted across a set up LUNs present over Fibre Channel. It can work with any fibre channel storage. If your client is willing and can carve out TBs of storage and have it formatted with the Xsan file systems this will work. If they want to use Final Cut Studio and just have file share via CIFS, NFS to mac workstations then they can do that with what they have now.

Host based zfs config with Oracle's Unified Storage 7000 series

Hi all,
It is my understanding that the 7000 storage displays a FC or ISCSI lun to the host. I understand this LUN is a ZFS lun in the 7000 storage, however the host still sees this as only one LUN. If I configure a host based ZFS storage device on top of this LUN I have no host based zfs redundancy. So do we still need to create a host based ZFS mirror or a host based ZFS raidz device when use a 7000 series storage array?

Many thanks - telling ESX to connect to the 7310's IP address on one of the other subnets DOES appear to work!
My brain must still be addled from some other recent issues we've been having...absolutely no idea why I hadn't tried it already...
I stand by the fact that the BUI is ambigious, however - it still mentions that it's exported on only one of the networks...

Don't upgrade to Sun Storage 7000 Series 2009.04.10.2.1!

The latest release of AmberRoad firmware (Sun Storage 7000 Series 2009.04.10.2.1) leads to a performance regression. It's recommended not update at this time. See the Fishworks Documentation for more information: http://wikis.sun.com/display/FishWorks/Sun+Storage+7000+Series+Software+Updates

The last two releases (2009.Q2.2.1 and 2009.Q2.2.0) of the AR firmware show poor iSCSI performance.
I therefor recommend to use release 2009.Q2.1.1.

Sun Unified Storage Simulator

Hi All,
I have installed Sun Unified Stroage Simulator on Virtual box 3.0.4.

And i am trying to get SNMP data from MIB browser,
when I do a SNMP walk, only MIB1 and MIB2 data is coming ( system and interface). In fact interface data also is incomplete. I am not able to get any data related to enterpirse specific mib related to storage. Also I am not finding any wbem management support on this virtual box(on simulator).
Please help me and tell me how to enable wbem on this.

I updated to 2009.Q2.5.0 , it didn't fix this issue.

Sun Unified Storage 7110 and iSCSI Initiators

Is it possible to secure the number of iSCSI LUN's a host will see?
For example I have 6 LUN's and 4 Solaris guests (initiators) and I only want certain guests to see certain LUN's, not all of them?

Hello,
You have to declare an initiator group with all the hosts you want to map LUNS to.
In the lun-protocol tab, select the initiator group that you want to see the lun. Only this initiator group will be able to see the lun.

New major release of Sun Storage 7000 software is available

I noticed a new major release of the Sun Storage 7000 software is available at the website below.

The format change is for BDB Java Edition 5.0 only, and does not apply to other BDB products. It's forward compatible, which means that a BDB JE application using JE 5.0 can use environments written with older versions of JE. However, it's not backwards compatible; once your environment has been opened by JE 5.0, it's been converted to the new format, and can no longer be readable by older versions of JE.
Just for the benefit of others who may not have read the changelog, here's the full text:
JE 5.0.34 has moved to on-disk file format 8.
The change is forward compatible in that JE files created with release 4.1 and earlier can be read when opened with JE 5.0.34. The change is not backward compatible in that files created with JE 5.0 cannot be read by earlier releases. Note that if an existing environment is opened read/write, a new log file is written by JE 5.0 and the environment can no longer be read by earlier releases.
There are two important notes about the file format change.
The file format change enabled significant improvements in the operation performance, memory and disk footprint, and concurrency of databases with duplicate keys. Environments which contain databases with duplicate keys must run an upgrade utility before opening an environment with this release. See the Performance section for more information.
An application which uses JE replication may not upgrade directly from JE 4.0 to JE 5.0. Instead, the upgrade must be done from JE 4.0 to JE 4.1 and then to JE 5.0. Applications already at JE 4.1 are not affected. Upgrade guidance can be found in the new chapter, "Upgrading a JE Replication Group", in the "Getting Started with BDB JE High Availability" guide.I may not have fully understood your question, so let us know if that doesn't answer it.

Unified Storage, deny administration over ssh on interface

Hello,
I am playing around with the Sun Unified Storage Simulator and wanted to limit administrative access to one interface only.
I've set up two interfaces properly. When the admin option is disabled on one interface, it doesn't offer access to the BUI but it still allows access to SSH. Is there a way to completely deny administration over an interface?

Seems to be a bug. The Administration Guide [http://docs.sun.com/source/820-4167-10/p6.html#configuration__network] describes the behavior I expected.
My simulator's version is 2009.Q2.0.0

Is Sun Storage 7000 Storage replication adapter compatible with 2540 series

We are evaluating VMWare Site Recovery Manager 4.0. Is Sun Storage 7000 Storage replication adapter compatible with 2540 Sun Storage series?

I would say the short answer would be no. The 2540 is a LSI based device, the SRM adapter for that is written by LSI. The 7000
series array is based on OpenSolaris and ZFS, quite a different beast.

Just wanted to throw a question out here..
I've been demo'ing the Sun Unified 7000 Vmware image and I have to say... Wow!!! Kudos to the Fishworks Team. Very nice.
With that said, whats the outlook on being able to Cluster Messaging Server using NFS servers by these?
Right now, You have to run a NetApp, at least the last time I checked it was that way. I'd like to see these pop up quick as the standard for that.

Sun 74110 Unified Storage Share LUN settings for best database performance

We have been having performance issues with our Sun storage boxes using iscsi. I want to know what the best LUN settings should be for Database and Log LUNs for Write Syncronous Bias and Write Caching should be for each LUN.

Unified Storage Simulator and ESXi

Hello all, I'm trying to test out Sun's Unified Storage system via their Simulator for VMware. I tried loading the system into ESXi (copied the files into my datastore and used vmware-cmd to register it). The machine shows up in my list, but as "invalid".
Will this only work under VMware Player?

Earlier versions of the Simulator (2008 and 2009 versions) have been released as a VMware as well as VirtualBox version simulator.
Newer versions are only release as a version for Virtualbox and don't do well converting.
You can try using tools as VMware converter, OVFtool, extractors, creating a new VMware VM and manually adding the VMDK files. You'll see all will fail.
The first simulator version of 2008 would let you convert it to a ESX VM from VMware Workstation with the VMware Converter tool. Unfortunately this simulator version is the one version that doesn't allow updating to a later 2009 or 2010 release.
Trying to convert a 2009 version of the simulator from VMware Workstation to VMware ESX gives you problems booting the VM (panic, bug in OpenSolaris with devices?).
Converting a 2010 release simulator won't work either as described earlier.
So, waiting for the VMware release mentioned earlier would be your best and probably only option. Hopefully the 'devices' problem is fixed so you can use the VMware Converter tool to create and ESX vm.

3D Programming and 7000 Series set top box

I want to watch ESPN 3D but the screens are split on my Panasonic 3D Plasma screen. It is part of the Ultimate HD package but I have not been able to see it. The technicians at Verizon give me a different story each time I talk to them. One of the techs told me I need a 7000 series box to view 3D content. Can anyone tell me if this is true or give me suggestions to make this work? I also wonder if I need to connect the HDMI cable from the set top box directly to the tv via a 1.4 HDMI cable without going through my "non 3D capable" receiver or if a 1.3 HDMI cable will work like it does with my Playstation. Thanks.

I had the same problems. This is what you need to do if you haven't tried it yet. EPSN 3D broadcasts in 720P, so you have to go to settings and change your video settings to 720P, my guess is you probably have it set to 1080i. After setting it to 720p, then set your TV 3D setting to top and bottom and it should merge the picture. I would set the setting back to 1080i when you are done with watching the channel, the movies on demand I believe are 1080i and 3D setting side by side. Hope that helps.

The Photosmart 3210 can connect either with a USB cable or a network cable. If you have an available port on your router the network connection may be preferred.
I have a similar setup, the printer is connected to my router with a LAN cable, I access the printer wirelessly from my notebook computer through the router.

Dell Inspiron 7000 series dual monitor issue

Today tried to connect Dell Inspiron 7437 to external monitor using HDMI cord; it did not work. I changed setting to external monitor only and now cannot get an image on laptop screen or external monitor when HDMI cord is connected. Tried to restart computer; still goes to blank screen as soon as I plug in HDMI.
1. How to a return to default setting for laptop display so it's only set to laptop?
2. Is it possible to connect inspiron 7000 to external monitor with hdmi?

Yes, it is possible to connect the Inspiron 7000 series to an external monitor using an HDMI cable. Normally you can control how the video is displayed by using the <FN>+<F8> key combination. Normally your options are LCD only, duplicate display on the LCD & the external monitor, or just display on the external monitor (projector mode). Try that key combination to see if you can toggle between the available displays.
One thing you also might want to check to see is if that monitor is set to a resolution that your system cannot handle. Here is a link to the product support pages for the Inspiron 7437, and you will find user manuals on the page that will help explain which resolutions your video card can handle. You may need to set your monitor back to default settings (see your user manual for that monitor for details) and that should enable your system to send video to it.
