Sun Update Manager problem in Solaris 10/08
Since installing Solaris 10 x86 10/08 on my AMD Sempron system, Sun Update Manager doesn't work. It starts and gives me a "Warning" window with no text and a yellow triangle icon with an exclamation point. That's it. This worked fine on this box in the last Solaris release.
Any ideas?
Hi , I'm getting the similar issue. I've around 20 machines in my lab which are SunBlade 1500 and running solaris 10. While running the update manager I'm getting the pop up window with empty string and only exclamation mark. I tried to check the java version also which is 1.5 and also update the files
/usr/sbin/pprosvc
JAVACMD="/usr/jdk/latest/bin/java -version:1.5+"
To:
JAVACMD="/usr/jdk/latest/bin/java -version:1.5*"
And in /usr/bin/updatemanager, if you use it (around line 37):
Change:
JAVA_EXEC="/usr/jdk/latest/bin/java -version:1.5+"
To:
JAVA_EXEC="/usr/jdk/latest/bin/java -version:1.5*"
But still no effect .
After running suc.sh , I get the following message in one of my machine.

Sun Update Manager no connectivity on Solaris 10 x86
I just installed Solaris 10 on x86 platform. I allso need to install all kind of patches but Sun Update Manager gives error message:
Error: Unable to download document: "collection/default" Unknown host (username) connection to https://getupdates1.sun.com/solaris/
and nothing happes...i cant check for updates. How can get sun service plan free of charge? i heard some patches are free of charge.
Please help!
Thank You!By accident, I found out that the graphics settings are remembered apparently only if a plug-and-play monitor is present (that reports its properties to the graphics adapter).
Also, during installation, be sure to watch the screen at all times. The "kdmconfig" program is apparently run also during installation. There's a 4-second window (quite at the beginning of the installation) to view the graphics properties as detected by the installer. As soon as you see this screen, hit the SPACE key to stop the timer, then verify the settings if they match your monitor and graphics adapter type. If you have the manuals of these, it's easy to figure out if the settings are appropriate. Hit ESC to start kdmconfig, it'll go right into the XSun configuration (which is used ONLY by the installer with my version of Solaris 10). The installer automatically creates a XOrg configuration and switches to XOrg after reboot (if all went well).
After successful installation of Solaris 10 (when the graphical subsystem is working), you can run "xorgconfig" (in the X binary directory) to create a "xorg.conf" file that you can place in "/etc/X11/" directory. I'm not sure if the file is actually parsed, but you can edit it to change settings if necessary.
(BTW, it would be a good idea if "kdmconfig" would allow users to enter their own maximum/minimum/fixed horizontal and vertical frequencies, edit the mode table and set +/- hsync/vsync and interlace flags, and edit a monitor setting detected automatically. I was close to hair-pulling a couple of times. Also, the installer doesn't seem to save changes to the monitor setting.) -
Smpatch and Sun Update Manager BROKEN - Solaris 10 Sparc
Since the installation of patch 121118-12, smpatch and Sun Update Manager (SUM) 1.0.9 are completely broken for myself and many, many other Solaris 10 users. Numerous significant bugs are listed in the release notes for the client:
http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/hub_articles/sc_update_rn.jsp
smpatch analyze and download seems to work, but the system completely hangs on smpatch update, every time. During the hang, smpatch/SUM-related processes are duplicated. This is not mentioned in the release notes.
Here is the results of "ps -ef | grep patch" when smpatch update hangs upon patch install:

root 2275 2266 0 18:45:34 ? 1:20 /usr/bin/java -Djava.library.path=/usr/lib/cc-ccr/lib com.sun.patchpro.cli.Patc
Note the duplicated smpatch and java processes. This is a networked, stand-alone system. Killing the secondary smpatch and java -Djava.lib... processes stops the hang, but always results in installation failure for at least one patch.
Other than "killing hung processes and retry" as given in the release notes (bogus), what are good workarounds for the smpatch bug(s), which have severely impacted my system? When will Sun release a new SUM client? The current version is completely hosed.Thank you VERY much for your reply. I really appreciate your help.
Yes, smpatch works fine without patch 121118-12 installed (121118-10 is now my current smpatch level).

Sun Update Manager not working after applying latest patches
I just applied the latest patches using the Sun Update Manager GUI but now it doesn't work. After logging in to the GUI as root I get a message telling me an unknown error occurred and I see the following on my terminal:
java.lang.NullPointerException
at com.sun.swup.client.engine.solaris.SolarisUpdateCollection.invalidateCachedData(SolarisUpdateCollection.java:783)
at com.sun.swup.client.ui.UpdateFrame$LoadDataWorker.construct(UpdateFrame.java:256)
at com.sun.swup.client.ui.foundation.swing.SwingWorker$2.run(SwingWorker.java:109)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:595)
Any hints?I just installed the latest 9 recommended patch cluster and I am getting the same problem. Although I am not even able to login as root. I enter the login name root and then it blinks and comes back to the login screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sun Update Manager attempts to patch wrong arch of Sun Studio 12
Hi,
I'm having patching problems as mentioned here: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5198127&tstart=0
However, I recently (last week) installed an x86_64 version of Sun Studio 12 on my sparc NFS server as documented here: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-0274/6nc1b7u4r?a=view
(Installing the Sun Studio 12 Software on a Solaris Server for Use by Clients With a Different Architecture)
The clients are Sun Solaris 10 11/06 x86_64.
After running "check for updates", Sun Update Manager today returned 9 patches for Sun Studio 12. All of these patches appear to be for sparc architecture:
126995-01
124861-02
124867-01
124863-01
127000-01
127143-01
126503-01
127001-01
124872-01
My question is, why doesn't Sun Update Manager realize that I installed the x86_64 version of Sun Studio 12 (for NFS exporting) and give me the x86_64 version of these patches?
Or am I missing something? How does the procedure "Installing the Sun Studio 12 Software on a Solaris Server for Use by Clients With a Different Architecture" result in the package system on the NFS server being aware of the correct arch version of Sun Studio 12?
This should explain more:

I obviously have the i386 version of f95 sitting on my sparc server. The x86 clients are happy with it - works great, but I want to be able to patch it.
Can anyone tell me how to apply patches to my Sun Studio 12 installation in this case?
Thanks,
Philits probably best to get your other patching issue sorted out first before going any further with this. it may turn out that fixing the problem of smpatch analyze recommending already installed patches will also fix this problem

Sun update manager with patch manager
I need to use both products since I have systems running Solaris 10, 9 and 8. Is there a way to get them to work together?
Ideally, I would like to have 1 system talk to SUN to manage the application and downloads. I would want the system to distribute the patches to all the other systems.Yes, this is possible. We would recommend setting up Sun Update Manager on Solaris 10 as your patch proxy (with a connection to Sun). Both Update Manager on Solaris 10 and Patch Manager on Solaris 8 and 9 can then be configured as clients.

Sun Update Manager Entitlement Permissions
I recently ran "smpatch analyze" and "smpatch update" on a W1100z workstation running Solaris 10 (x86) [03/05]. Five patches were loaded including 119103-03 which upgraded Patch Manager to Update Manager.
Now, it is my understanding that without a Service Plan, I am entitled to the Security Updates, but that's it (Recommended Updates require a service plan???). That seems OK to me, but if this is the case, what happens when a Securtiy Update depends on s Recommended Update?
Update Manager shows a list of 8 new available updates this morning - 5 of them are securiy updates that all seem to rely on Recommended Update 119684-01. However, when I try to install 119684-01, I am given the following warning:
Failed Installation - update specified does not have entitlement permissions
Not sure if something else is going on or if this is due to the fact that I do not have a service plan and only require the security updates - however, it doesn't make much sense to release security updates for free if the recommended update it relies on is not also available.
I like the fact that Sun is trying to ease patch management, but I really question the need of a service plan to keep the systems up-to-date.
Am I missing something or do I have to forget about all these Security Updates unless I subscribe to a Service Plan
JBFrom Sun's Website describing Update Manager:
http://www.sun.com/service/sunupdate/gettingstarted.html
"Customers who have not purchased a valid Sun Service Plan can use the Sun Update Manager software to access security fixes and device drivers."
This applies to my situation. I have not subscribed to a Service Plan and really see no need to if what is described above is true - I would assume the "security fixes" refer to patches of Type=Security. However, this tool is useless if I am not allowed to also install patches of Type=Recommended that the Security Patches depend on.
I can understand Sun wanting users to pay for the Recommended Patches, but if a Security Patch depends on a Recommend Patch, that Recommended Patch should probably also be labelled as a Security Fix.

Sun Update manager Registration Wizard - "LOG FILE"
hi dudes
we have a problem with the sun update manager registration wizard.
"Exception in web service communication"
i think we have a problem with the proxy access.
is there a special log file, where we can found more information about
the system registration process?
thanks a lot for your support
regardsHello,
The "Exception in Web Service communication" error only occurs during the registration. There has been a bug raised for this - 6348265.
The only workaround that we have available is to bypass various parts of your network and security infrstructure from the client to the internet during the registration process, e.g.
LAN(client machine) - Proxy (Squid) - Firewall to DMZ - Webwasher (AntiVirus)
- Firewall to Internet
Bypassing proxy, antivirus software or firewall.
As this issue only affect the registration process these can be re-enable after registration.

Getting the latest patch list without Sun Update Manager
Hi,
I think this is not the best practice but merely exploring possibilities.
My boss wants to know if there is a way to get a list of the latest patches online. We just need the list and not an automated download and patching tool like Sun Update Manager. Based on the list, we can then manually download and apply the patches one-by-one.
We have used Sun Explorer and Sun Checkup/Griffon to come up with the list before. However, the list only includes the patches available in the EIS DVD and not the most current list available online.
Can somebody help?
Thank you.configure and use use sun update manager
/usr/bin/updatemanager -
Managing several groups of machines with Sun update manager.
I have tested the Update Connection with a few machines for a while
and it seems ok, but if I were to move all my machines to using Update Manager then I would need some sort of grouping similar machines together.
Now it looks to me that everything is one big list.
Is there any way to organize machines so test and production is not in the same long list and perhaps servers and desktops are separated? If not I guess I am not the only one missing such a feature..
Best regards,
ThomasThomas,
Assuming you are referring to the systems and how they are grouped/displayed on the Update Connection web portal, there is currently no way to group hosts however it is a feature which is in development for a future release. -
Sun Ray / DHCP problems on Solaris 10
All,
I have a Sun v240 running Solaris 10 (03/05) with patches current as of late December 2005. I cannot configure DHCP using the "utadm -a bge1" command as I get the following message:
### Warning: DHCP Service is in the maintenance mode
There could be a problem with the DHCP configuration
### It is strongly recommended to fix the problem and then use:
### "/usr/sbin/svcadm clear svc:/network/dhcp-server:default"
### to get DHCP service out of the maintenance mode before running utadm
Do you want to Continue? (Y/[N]):
I type "n" and than from the command line enter:
svcadm clear svc:/network/dhcp-server:default
But when I run the command "svcs -v" I see the following:
maintenance - 13:48:47 - svc:/network/dhcp-server:default
The output from "svcs -x" is the following:
# svcs -x
svc:/application/print/server:default (LP print server)
State: disabled since Sun Jan 22 13:45:48 2006
Reason: Disabled by an administrator.
See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-05
See: lpsched(1M)
Impact: 2 dependent services are not running. (Use -v for list.)
svc:/network/dhcp-server:default (DHCP server)
State: maintenance since Sun Jan 22 16:46:52 2006
Reason: Start method failed repeatedly, last exited with status 1.
See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-KS
See: in.dhcpd(1M)
See: /var/svc/log/network-dhcp-server:default.log
Impact: This service is not running.
In the log mentioned I get the following repeating error:
[ Jan 22 13:46:21 Executing start method ("/usr/lib/inet/in.dhcpd") ]
Datastore status error: Location does not exist
[ Jan 22 13:46:21 Method "start" exited with status 1 ]
[ Jan 22 13:48:47 Leaving maintenance because clear requested. ]
[ Jan 22 13:48:47 Enabled. ]
I cannot get dhcp out of maintenance. I don't know what this "Datastore" status error means. Any ideas?
BobDHCP server has two or three different data store types, normally its a plain text files or binary data files. Its store info of clients connected and some other stuff. Maybe files path is incorrect, just try to unconfig the dhcp server. I dont know the exact comand, but im using grafical tool on my opensolaris box, its under /usr/sadm/admin/bin/ directory, dhcpmgr.

OS/ Version: Solaris / 5.8
Software: SAN 4.4.8 (SAN Foundation Kit)
I installed the SAN 4.4.8 Foundation kit to implement STMS in order to have a dual path to both an A5200 as well as thru the SAN to a Hitachi 9500V storage subsystem. After the installation of software and patches, I rebooted the server with mpxio disabled. I then modified the scsi_vhci.conf file to enable mpxio. I rebooted the server once more and then updated scsi_vhci.conf with the "device-type-scsi-options" info. Upon reboot, I still do not see the drives under mpxio control nor were any addl devices created. I do and have been able to see the devices via format. A stmsboot -L shows the device and the corresponding STMS device name but there are no links or devices referencing this name. I even did a devfsadm -Cv to clean the links and rebooted with reconfigure but still nothing. What did I miss? Does mpxio work on Solaris 8 using QLGC single HBA cards for the A5200 and JNI FCE-1473N cards for the Hitachi?Robert, where did you get the information about STMS not being supported on the 9000 series SANs? A search of the internal handbook on various models from the 9000 platform turns up no references to STMS being unsupported. Furthermore the 9000 series storage systems are " not customer manageable " systems, so any support and configuration questions regarding this platform should be directed to Sun Storage support.

Sun Ultra 60 - Problems to install patch 119850-21
Hi,
I'm running Solaris 10 on my Ultra 60. I've been using for many months - without any problems - Sun Update Manager in order to keep the system updated. Lately it always tells me that patch 119850-21 is available, but when it tries to install it fails. I also tried to download and install that patch manually in single mode with patchadd, and also tried smpatch. Both of them fail to install this patch, reporting problems in checkinstall, saying that the patch is already installed - which is not true according to 'patchadd -p'.
Thanks for any input on this issue.Of course. Here you have it:

Sun Update Connection Client 1.0.8 now available
The Sun Update Connection System client, version 1.0.8 is now available as
software update 121118-08 (SPARC) or 121119-08 (x86). Version 1.0.8
is the biggest update we have produced since the initial release of the Sun Update
Connection and includes the following enhancements:
o Sun Update Manager has a brand new user interface which includes a new
look and icons, numerous usability improvements such as better progress
reporting and the ability to print/save installed and available patch lists and
patch README files.
o Support for Solaris Live Upgrade so patches can be added to an inactive
alternate boot environment.
o The Solaris 10 SMF configuration framework is now used to trigger the
installation of patches with special handling requirements (single user mode
or restart-after required) which will improve compatibility and reliability.
o The version 1.0.8 client uses a new Sun-hosted patch server that outsources
content delivery to Akamai. This enables us to provide superior download
performance to our customers worldwide.
For a complete list of the defects corrected in this release please
refer to the patch README file for this patch. Note also that this
update includes fixes that were delivered in prior releases of the
Sun Update Connection client software patch. By installing this update
you may be getting fixes that were previously available but not present
on your system.
Sun Update Connection Hosted application has been refreshed to include
numerous user interface adjustments and fixes that have been suggested by a
customer focus group usability study. Although there are no new features,
the usability of the product is substantially improved.
Thank You,
Sun Update Connection TeamOn the SunStudio Patches - I dont believe that this will be fully fixed since part of the problem is the patches themselves. I however do not have access to a SunStudio installed test system at present so I'd be interested to hear feedback from someone who has tried installing these through the SunUC 1.0.8 toolset
Fonts - I believe that greater flexibility will be coming in future releases. Work on the Update Manager gui is still ongoing
Patch server - Yes the SunUC proxy will use the new servers providing it has been upgarded to 1.0.8
Sun4u patch - This is an issue with the patch metadata being incorrect and not the toolset. -
