SUN VM and Oracle VM
Hi All,
Can you please let me know which one is good for Virtualization. Planing to install EBS on VM.
I am good in Sun VM. But don't know about Oracle VM.
SUN VM are Oracle VM?
Thanks in Advance.
Thanks,
Venkat.
Hi,
I have never used Sun VM, but worked on Oracle VM and VMWare, and I managed to install Oracle Apps 11i/R12 successfully on both.
Please search the forum for similar threads. Also, see (Note: 465915.1 - Using Oracle VM with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i or Release 12).

my client is insisting on putting oracle RAC on top of sun cluster, the thing is i don't know what is the benifit of creating such an architecture, i tries to search on the internet but couldn't understand the benifits nor the advantage, Kindly if some one has implemented such an architecture to let us know the use and the benifits
Hi,
Here on my environment, there is SUNCluster only for single instances. The Clusterware Oracle is complete providing high availability and load balance for your database, you don't need sun cluster with this case, no advantages gained. The only thing controlled by SUNCluster on my RAC environment is QFS (Cluster file system from SUN).
If search on this forum, there are many discussion by this topic (suncluster X RAC) like this post Re: Sun Cluster.. Why?

Oracle Workflow Server in a SUN machine; and the Oracle
Hi All
I have installed Oracle Workflow Server in a SUN machine; and the Oracle
Workflow Client (Builder) in a WIN2000 machine.
In the SUN machine, I already had installed Oracle9i and OMS (Oracle
Management Server) version 9.2.0.1.0.
In the WINDOWS 2000 machine, I already had installed the Oracle9i
Client and the OWB (Oracle Warehouse Builder) version 9.0.3.35.0. Workflow
Builder
was installed together with Oracle Client components.
I have a OWB (Oracle Warehouse Builder) project, and I deploy and schedule
JOBS in OEM.
Now I need Oracle Workflow in order to better ordering, manage and schedule
that jobs.
I'm reading the following documentation:
Oracle Workflow Guide (Release 2.6.2)
http://www.csis.gvsu.edu/GeneralInfo/Oracle/workflow.920/a95265.pdf But I think Oracle Workflow is very complex to learn quickly.
My OWB Project has several mappings that load tables in a Data Warehouse.
When I deploy these mappings one by one, in OEM, I can execute them in OEM
and they work well.
But when I use the Workflow Deployment Wizard, I create a new Workflow
Project (Item type and Process).
But I can't Launch this process. I go to Launch Process in Workflow page
(http://:/pls//) but when I iniciate the project,
it stops in the OWB Standard Begin Function. It does not go ahead.
Well, when I use the Workflow Deployment Wizard inside OWB, it generates
jobs that can
be viewed inside OEM (Oracle Enterprise Manager) too. But when I submit
these jobs, I can't get success too.
Can somebody help me? May you guide me in order to solve my problem, or send
me some
documents or links about workflow, and it's integration with OWB and OEM?
Best regardsI think this might be more of an OWB question, and how OWB uses workflow, I have sent an email internally to try and get someone to responsd. You should also consider contacting Oracle Support if you are having these kinds of problems.

Forte M2 and Oracle 8.1.6 on Sun Solaris 2.5.1
Anybody out there running Forte M2 with Oracle version 8.1.6?? The best
would be on a Sun Solaris 2.5.1 machine.
Our Oracle dba wants to upgrade for another application but Forte's
certification matrix only goes up to Oracle 8.0.3
Any experiences with version M and Oracle 8.1 would be helpful.

Problem with Java 5 and Oracle 10g JDBC driver
Hi All,
Currently we upgrade our web application to Java 5 and Oracle 10.2 JDBC driver. And we encountered a bug, when the user entered the information through UI and data didn't store into database (Oracle 9i). The problem is that this bug is not happend so often maybe once a day and this did not happen before we upgraded to Java 5 and Oracle 10.2 JDBC driver. Does anyone encounter the same problem ? Is this Java 5 problem or Oracle JDBC driver problem ?
Thanks,sounds like a database problem...
Are you using a driver version that's supported for your database engine?
What else did you change? We once ran into a major bug in our application that had for 5 years been masked by performance problems in our hardware and infrastructure.
Once those were resolved the bug showed itself and caused tens of thousands of records to be erroneously inserted into our database every day.
It's certainly NOT a problem with your JVM (if it's a decent one, like the Sun implementation).
So it's either your database, your driver, your network (dropping packets???), or your application.
The upgrade may just have exposed something that was already there. -
Crystal Report and Oracle SDO_GEOMETRY
Hi,

I'm using Crystal Reports for Eclipse version 2.0.4.r825 with Eclipse 3.5 and Oracle 11g as database. I configured the database connection using ojdbc14.jar. I tried the same with the Crystal Reports 2008 trial version and i'm having the same problem.
<br />
<br />
I don't wanna use the geometry column in my report but because of this error i can't use the whole table. Is there a way to avoid this error and still use the other columns of the table. Or maybe there is another way to connect to an Oracle database which can handle this special data type.

Thanks in advance,

Jens KellerHi Jens,
Views would work also as you noted.
No, if DB manufacturers change/update their Servers/clients they need to follow ANSII 92 standards. If they don't return the correct data type then CR will not "hack" our drivers to fix their issues. We did that for years and was a code nightmare, when they got around to fixing the problem it broke CR again. We decided to follow the standards, it may be our issue sometimes but in this case unique data types typically are not supported by CR. If you want support and it's not a client issue then add your request to the Enhancement Request2 post.
So yes in your case it would make it easier but for others they'll be asking why CR doesn't show all fields. Same reason.... not a CR issue.
Thanks agian

1) Hi all, i have some doubt about the oracle versioning technique. For example, i had installed oracle 8.1.7 release 3 in a SUN Solaris version 8 and the database character set is in UTF-8. Then i select sql : "Select * from product_component_version" and the result is "Oracle8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.7.0.0 ". What does that means ? Our DBA in another location had installed the oracle 8.1.7 release 2 in their db server with the same OS and same database character set which is UTF-8. But the result from the "Select * from product_component_version" is "Oracle8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.7.2 ".
So as a conclusion, i had confused about the oracle versioning technique, can somebody please explain to me ?
2) My second problem is actually related to problem stated above (1). In the Oracle 8.1.7 release 2 database,
when i select a clob/blob value for update, i sometimes encountered the problem as follows but in our Oracle 8.1.7 release 3 the problem didn't exist at all after investigating that all the java code and other factor remain the same but not the oracle version.
java.io.IOException: ORA-22990: LOB locators cannot span transactions
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_LOB", line 700
ORA-06512: at line 1

at oracle.jdbc.dbaccess.DBError.SQLToIOException(DBError.java)
at oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleBlobOutputStream.flushBuffer(OracleBlobOutputStream.java)
at oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleBlobOutputStream.write(Compiled Code)
This was an error log in our backend log and in the web browser it showed "Request Timeout" in both IE and Netscape. We are using J2EE, Oracle DBMS and IBM Websphere App Server for our e-commerce system.
But retrying the request sometimes may work but most of the time failed.
The above error didn't exist in our server using Oracle version 8.1.7 release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) and Oracle
version 8.1.6.0.0. But ORacle version 8.1.7.2 release 2 is encountering this problem now.
Somebody please help me on this problem, our developers and DBA had try to solved this problem one week ago but still don't know what is the cause.Oracle 9i client would fit you well. You need ORACLE_HOME set, ORACLE_HOME/bin in the path variable and of cource check that the user has access there. Are you using OCI to connect to Oracle? JDBC thin client is a better approach, in my opinion, as it is pure java.
Oracle also provides something called "instant client", which provides connectivity only for applications. -

Access Manager Policy Agent and Oracle AS
Hi,
my system uses Oracle Application Server. The security dept use Sun Access Manager. I need to integrate the security of the Oracle system with the policy agent. Where this gets a little confusing is that one of my developers tells me that this is difficult to implement and that Sun arent planning on supporting the Oracle AS in future.
What I would like is some clarification from the horses mouth so to speak. In particular is it possible to integrate the policy agent and Oracle AS, and are Sun committed to supporting and developing for this.
Thanks,
Andy."Where this gets a little confusing is that one of my developers tells me that this is difficult to implement"
"it is NOT an implementation but an integration ! difficult ? why ?"
"and that Sun arent planning on supporting the Oracle AS in future."
There is a PA 2.2 for Oracle 10g ! It is the latest version(2.2 I mean). I don't see any reasons why Sun should not continue. But it is ONLY my point of view...
"What I would like is some clarification from the horses mouth so to speak. In particular is it possible to integrate the policy agent and Oracle AS, and are Sun committed to supporting and developing for this."
Of course it is possible because you can find the PA that will integrate your Oracle AS with a Sun AM.
1) Please read the documentation.
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/1322.1
Download the one for Oracle and read also the user guide.
PA are very easy to integrate if you know what you do... Espec. und. the AM auth and sso... If you can be helped by a AM guy from your comp. it is welcome... It is a j2ee agent and of course the PA will make what is necessary to redirect you to AM at login time and later to auth. your request...2)
2) Download the soft and do the job :-)
Product Downloads
Sun Java System Access Manager Policy Agent 2.2 for Oracle Application Server 10g
http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=455d52ed
I did plenty of int. with Sun/Bea/Tomcat AS(don't forget there are also webserver agents like Apache PA) with AM and it is not a big deal. Not Oracle, but it is an AS and I don't see why it should be difficult...
Hope this helps a bit. -
How do I map Hitachi SAN LUNs to Solaris 10 and Oracle 10g ASM?
Hi all,
I am working on an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM installation with Sun E6900 servers attached to a Hitachi SAN for shared storage with Sun Solaris 10 as the server OS. We are using Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) RAC clusterware
for the clustering software and raw devices for shared storage and Veritas VxFs 4.1 filesystem.
My question is this:
How do I map the raw devices and LUNs on the Hitachi SAN to Solaris 10 OS and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I am aware that with an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM instance, one needs to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter file to set the asm_diskstring setting to recognize the LUNs that are presented to the host.
I know that Sun Solaris 10 uses /dev/rdsk/CwTxDySz naming convention at the OS level for disks. However, how would I map this to Oracle 10g ASM settings?
I cannot find this critical piece of information ANYWHERE!!!!
Thanks for your help!Yes that is correct however due to use of Solaris 10 MPxIO multipathing software that we are using with the Hitachi SAN it does present an extra layer of complexity and issues with ASM configuration. Which means that ASM may get confused when it attempts to find the new LUNs from the Hitachi SAN at the Solaris OS level. Oracle Metalink note 396015.1 states this issue.
So my question is this: how to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter asm_diskstring to recognize the new Hitachi LUNs presented to the Solaris 10 host?
Lets say that I have the following new LUNs:
/dev/rdsk/c7t1d1s6
/dev/rdsk/c7t1d2s6
/dev/rdsk/c7t1d3s6
/dev/rdsk/c7t1d4s6
Would I set the ASM initialization parameter for asm_diskstring to /dev/rdsk/c7t1d*s6
as correct setting so that the ASM instance recognizes my new Hitachi LUNs? Solaris needs to map these LUNs using pseudo devices in the Solaris OS for ASM to recognize the new disks.
How would I set this up in Solaris 10 with Sun multipathing (MPxIO) and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I want to get this right to avoid the dreaded ORA-15072 errors when creating a diskgroup with external redundancy for the Oracle 10g RAC ASM installation process. -
Hi,
I am using Oracle parser to parse my XML file, as i found that it is faster then IBM and sun parser, But i think it does not support XPath, so how can i use XPath and oracle parser, I can also use Sun parser , but dont know if it has XPath support,
So please help me outI suppose it supports DOM or a saxHandler that can provides you a DOM
tree. For Xpath, may I suggest you my solution : http://www.japisoft.com/jxpath

Hi,
Has anybody out there used Oracle Trace to monitor the performance of Forte
service objects that access data from Rdb databases. We have been trying to
do this and Trace does not seem to see the Forte servers. Could you please

I'm interested in learning if anyone knows of any

Thanks in advance.

Hello Stephen,
some time ago we talked about Forte for LINUX. Now I think it will need
not a long time that Forte is available on LINUX.
INFORMIX and ORACLE has officially announced that they offer their
Database on LINUX. Now it is only a question of time, that Forte
got a business-case from big Firms which want to see Forte on LINUX.
In GERMANY I know that Mercedes use LINUX for car-development and
Sixt-Budget use LINUX for their car-rental (worldwide).
I think, if Forte is availaible for LINUX than a big beng goes through
the IT-Market. Many firms just wait for a OO-orientated 4GL-Development
environment to distribute their business-processes to many little
servers which are cheap and powerfull. It is than a question of
less money to use a big machine or just 10 or 20 LINUX servers (which are
cheaper and faster).
Sorry for my enthusiasm on this mailing list, but i'am
so happy to hear from this and want's to cry it out all over the world :-)))))

it will be a cold day in hell before such a port is done.

Oracle, and some well documented cases, I would be surprised if you could

Informix, on the other hand, I just downloaded (not installed yet, but at

One of the problems that Forte faces in the marketplace is the cost of the
product. Yes, it does a lot (personally, I'm quite a fan). But, some IT
shops - especially the ones that have capable people on staff - are
beginning to look at the distributed object characteristics of Java and

database - without all the coding - and with performance too!), JavaSpaces,
Jini, etc. I think it's a "head in the sand" approach for Forte to ignore
this. To me, Java presents some very compelling features. And, according to
some friends I have inside of Sun, basically all of the brightest people in
Sun have all migrated over to doing the Java stuff, so it's only likely to
get better. People like Rick Cattel (databases) and Jim Waldo (distributed
object systems) who have been giving this stuff lots of thought for
years!! That's why it's so well thought out when you see it for the first
time.
The only glaring omission from it seems to be a generic event queue
mechanism. Fortunately, given the other stuff Java has to offer (RMI, event
classes, etc.) you can build a very good one in about a man week. In fact,
Java has one, they just didn't take a "high" enough superclass - they
limited it to AWT events. If they had made it all events, you wouldn't even
have to build that.
Now, don't get me wrong... Forte is planning to incorporate lots of really
cool Java stuff in their next release (preannounced at FORUM). But to me,
that's not the issue on a larger scale. The real issue is this: are
environments which are cheaper incorporating a lot of what Forte does - and
the answer is Yes! Incidentally, there is a version of the Java environment
being developed for Linux under the GNU license, for the express purpose of
making it open and keeping it free (and open). Someone recently told me
that it is now available, but I haven't confirmed that yet.
In GERMANY I know that Mercedes use LINUX for car-development and
Sixt-Budget use LINUX for their car-rental (worldwide). My perception is that the Europeans are more progressive and cooperative
than us in the states. Most of the really good Linux help I've gotten on
the net has been form Europe (including a wonderful sendmail
site/expert). :-)
I think, if Forte is availaible for LINUX than a big beng goes through
the IT-Market. Many firms just wait for a OO-orientated 4GL-Development
environment to distribute their business-processes to many little
servers which are cheap and powerfull. It is than a question of
less money to use a big machine or just 10 or 20 LINUX servers (which are
cheaper and faster).Well, as I was indicating above, people who are cost conscious might be
searching for lower cost alternatives to Forte itself.
Sorry for my enthusiasm on this mailing list, but i'am
so happy to hear from this and want's to cry it out all over the world:-)))))

So, who says that all reactions have to be between 4 & 6 (5 being
neutral)!! Don't apologize. If you're excited - be excited! That's what
life is all about.

Sun Solaris with Oracle 8i &java 1.3
i am going to work on Sun solaris with Oracle 8i
in Java platform
is there any major issue to this combination
pls , help me out to -> [email protected]
Thanks in advance
oviyaI've been able to get Apache_1.3.(9|11|12)+PHP-(3.0.1[45]|4.0b4pl1)+Oracle-8.1.5.0.2 to work (OCI8 API calls) but with much difficulty.
Compiling was pretty straightforward. I used APXS to load the PHP module. However, when I start Apache with the PHP modules loaded and added, Apache would die (no hints, etc.) What I did was start Apache without PHP loaded, reconfigure in PHP once Apache started and THEN restart apache. This works for me. Kinda tedious, though. And the time when Apache is running without support for PHP would allow anyone to see my PHP code with my database password.
(Incidentally, how should I configure Apache so it doesn't serve files which end in .php[3] unless it was through the PHP module?)
I've emailed the Apache OCI8 module developers about it (Stig and Thies) so I hope it'll be resolved soon. -
Texas RamSan Solid State Storage Appliance and Oracle VM 3.x
Has anyone had success with using a Texas Memory System RamSAN 810 (solid state appliance) and Fiber Channel controllers with Oracle VM 3.x
I believe any Fiber Channel device should work as shared storage, but looking for some extra confirmation that there were no issues before actually buying.
Thanks for any information.886374 wrote:
In playing with OVM 3.0 so far, I see that local storage (as the accelerator cards would show up as) is not really appropriate for Production Systems. It appears I can create a Repository on these physical disks and then present them to the VM guest. Then add these cards as my Oracle ASM disks for my "fast" storage, and do the same with the FiberChannel storage for my "slower" disks. Because of the Local Storage used for part of the VM guest, we would not be able to Live Migrate or have High availability I believe. Is this correct? Correct.
If we have the two servers as mentioned above. Could I take the database VM down and move it to the other server (ie Cold Migration)? The local storage (ie the accelerator cards) could physically be moved from one physical host to the other, but I am not sure, since this is virtualized disk, if this would be allowed or how it could be recognized on the other Oracle VM Server. This might be a "dream", but might be something we would like to do if an emergency arose or if more maintenance needed to be done on Server 1. Any comments? You would have to shutdown the VM, migrate it to an unassigned folder, edit the VM, remove the local storage from Server 1, migrate to Server 2 and add the local storage from Server 2. Whether or not this means moving your hardware is up to you.
Does anyone have other solutions to run Solid State disks (approximately 2TB worth) and Oracle VM, running a single guest that runs the database? We have been unable to find iSCSI or FiberChannel enclosures that can handle solid state drives in the 1 to 2 TB range of capacity. So perhaps there are other enclosures out there that can act as Shared Storage that can operate with SSDs. Thank you for any comments and suggestions.I know the Sun storage appliances use hybrid storage, i.e. a mix of SSD/spinning disks, but I don't know the details. Our Exadata machines have 5TB of Flash storage per cell, so I know we have such options.
